Woody Allen details relationship with Soon-Yi in new memoir

Woody Allen blasts his ex-wife Mia Farrow for her “Ahab-like quest” to destroy him with sex abuse allegations and describes his romance with his current wife Soon-Yi Previn in graphic terms in his new memoir.

“At the very early stages of our new relationship, when lust reigns supreme … we couldn’t keep our hands off each other,” Allen writes of Previn in “Apropos of Nothing,” which came out Monday to little fanfare.

The book had originally been set to be put out by Hachette, but it was dropped after mass protests by employees, who were angry the company would publish Allen, who has been accused of sexually abusing Farrow’s daughter, Dylan.

In the book, which was put out by Arcade Publishing, the Oscar-winning director says he became embroiled in a romance with Previn in 1991, while he was still with her mother Mia Farrow, with whom he has four kids.

Allen said that he and Farrow were basically apart by the time he began dating her adopted daughter, who is 35 years younger than him.

He recalled the day Farrow learned of the affair after discovering erotic photographs of her 20-something daughter at Allen’s apartment.

“Of course I understand her shock, her dismay, her rage, everything,” he said. “It was the correct reaction.”

But he also expressed no regret.

“Sometimes, when the going got rough and I was maligned everywhere, I was asked if I had known the outcome, do I ever wish I never took up with Soon-Yi? I always answered I’d do it again in a heartbeat.”

He even shows how much affection he has for Previn, dedicating the book to her with the words: “For Soon-Yi, the best. I had her eating out of my hand and then I noticed my arm was missing.”

Allen was with Farrow for more than a decade, and recalled happy times with the “very, very beautiful” actress.

They’re feeling cooled, however, especially after the 1987 birth of their one biological children, Ronan Farrow.

Farrow has been outspoken about his father, whom he alleges sexually abused his sister Dylan, Allen’s adopted daughter.

Allen has long denied sexually abusing Dylan, and in the book, he speculated that the accusations arose from what he calls Farrow’s “Ahab-like quest” for revenge.

“I never laid a finger on Dylan, never did anything to her that could be even misconstrued as abusing her; it was a total fabrication from start to finish,” he wrote.

Describing a visit to Farrow’s Connecticut house in August 1992, when he allegedly molested Dylan, he acknowledged briefly placing his head on his then seven-year-old daughter’s lap.

“I certainly didn’t do anything improper to her. I was in a room full of people watching TV mid-afternoon,” he said.

Allen was never charged after two separate investigations in the 1990s.

Grand Central Publishing said it would release Allen’s book on April 7. But the news was met with outrage from Farrow, who shared the Pulitzer Prize with the New York Times for his New Yorker investigation into Harvey Weinstein.

As The Post reported, Hachette employees staged a walkout, prompting Hachette to scrap the book. The book has now been published by Arcade publishers.

Allen wrote “When actual flak did arrive they thoughtfully reassessed their position” and “dumped the book like it was a hunk of Xenon 135.”

Arcade editor Jeannette Seaver said in a statement: “In this strange time, when truth is too often dismissed as ‘fake news,’ we as publishers prefer to give voice to a respected artist, rather than bow to those determined to silence him.”

[quote]“For Soon-Yi, the best. I had her eating out of my hand and then I noticed my arm was missing.”

He may or may not have been inappropriate with his child, but he definitely inappropriate with book dedications.

by Anonymousreply 1March 23, 2020 6:35 PM

How can you buy this book? Google turned up nothing but this article, sometimes repackaged.

by Anonymousreply 2March 23, 2020 6:39 PM

Is that REALLY the dedication?!? Well, it is consistent with everything I’ve heard about the relationship - that she is a domineering bitch to him. Beginning to think it could have been a manipulation by her - though of course Woody should have resisted even if it was.

by Anonymousreply 3March 23, 2020 6:40 PM

So sick of this whole drama. It'll never, ever end. Ugh.

by Anonymousreply 4March 23, 2020 6:43 PM

The idea that someone couldn't keep their hands of Woody Allen's naked body is terrifying.

by Anonymousreply 5March 23, 2020 6:44 PM

I think I'm gonna buy a copy of this book - just to keep around in case I swallow something mildly poisonous and need to throw up.

by Anonymousreply 6March 23, 2020 6:52 PM

Victory!!! Was so pissed of I was being denied reading this book. Now if I can just get my hands on a dvd of "Rainy Day in New York". Fuck this Cancel Culture bullshit.

by Anonymousreply 7March 23, 2020 6:55 PM

And requires a suspension of disbelief I'm unable to manage, R5.

by Anonymousreply 8March 23, 2020 6:55 PM

The AMA is going to recommend it as emergency treatment for priapism.

[quote]Woody Allen blasts his ex-wife Mia Farrow for her “Ahab-like quest” to destroy him with sex abuse allegations

As soon as he can explain how he was already in therapy for his inappropriate behavior with both his kids long before he started the affair with Soon-Yi, I'm willing to listen.

I mean, don't we all want to know why he thought it would be a great idea to cheat on Dylan's and Satchel's mother with their adopted sister? When you're in therapy for "grossly inappropriate" behavior with your toddler daughter, isn't it just common sense to start fucking her teen sister?

by Anonymousreply 10March 23, 2020 6:58 PM

R5 my thoughts precisely. You don’t need to read anything more to know that this is just a very dishonest self serving book.

by Anonymousreply 11March 23, 2020 6:59 PM

Yeah right. He only married Soon Yi to save him from his fuck up of doing his girlfriend's daughter.

Sure, he just happened to find the love of his life in his girlfriend's teenager daughter. Yeah right. Had there not been a social outcry calling for his head she would have been heaved to the street and he would have moved on to the next young female.

by Anonymousreply 12March 23, 2020 7:04 PM

I dont know the first thing about her but my god, that is one plain woman.

by Anonymousreply 13March 23, 2020 7:06 PM

People outside of this family who are interested in this family's drama are extremely creepy and need to get a life.

by Anonymousreply 14March 23, 2020 7:12 PM

Woody isn't exactly a dreamboat, R13.

by Anonymousreply 15March 23, 2020 7:13 PM

I’m not a fan of Woody Allen, but I hate how people turn into prissy conservative daytime talk show hosts every time his relationship with Soon Yi comes up. Obviously he wasn’t just banging her if they are still together after this many years, but even if he was, so what. She was of age and of no relation to him.

It’s also highly offensive to me that people use his questionable relationship with Soon to validate the questionable molestation allegations. Like, well if he got with Mia’s of age, adopted daughter, it’s infinitely possible he molested his daughter too. Except they’re not on the same spectrum. One is deviant behavior, one isn’t.

by Anonymousreply 16March 23, 2020 7:29 PM

Speaking of deviant behavior.....Mia posted Ronan singing Sondheim today. "Not While I'm Around."

That dedication, omg he’s speaking about her like she’s an animal!

by Anonymousreply 18March 23, 2020 7:57 PM

"I’m not a fan of Woody Allen, but I hate how people turn into prissy conservative daytime talk show hosts every time his relationship with Soon Yi comes up. "

To object to Allen banging Soon Yi is not "prissy", you must have grown up under really fucked up circumstances if you think that behavior is ok.

by Anonymousreply 19March 23, 2020 8:06 PM

The Soon Yi relationship is super icky and wtf to that dedication ...but he has every right to tell his story (and I have no intention of reading it).

Also I always found it suspect that Mia was willing to stay with him and even overlook everything if he continued to use her in his movies. It wasn’t until he both left her and fired her that she suddenly started to care. So even if her accusations are true there is something seriously wrong and whorish about that.

They probably both deserved each other.

by Anonymousreply 20March 23, 2020 8:15 PM

The book does not seem to be available in the US. it is not on either Amazon or apple book's site. Perhaps it is just in the UK for the moment? I think Woody Allen is creepy as fuck and I question his choices, but I would still like to read about his process and his take on his past.

by Anonymousreply 21March 23, 2020 8:20 PM

As much as I think he is a disgusting perv, I'd still buy the book simply to protest the disgusting censorship of it. It's fucked up that people can still buy copies of Mein Kampf but are forbidden from buying a book written by somebody Twitter is angry at.

by Anonymousreply 22March 23, 2020 8:30 PM

R17 won't exactly put an end to the rumors about Ronan's paternity. Why, it's almost like singing is in his blood or something...

by Anonymousreply 26March 23, 2020 9:04 PM

Ronan's voice is lovely at r17, although he has a creepy body--spindly arms and a barrel chest.

by Anonymousreply 27March 23, 2020 9:36 PM

He was a gawky teenager then not the assured tophunk he is now.

by Anonymousreply 28March 23, 2020 9:40 PM

I don;t know why it's so hard to find by search on amazon (I couldn't find it by searching either for "Woody Allen" or for its title), but it is listed there, and you can buy it for Kindle for $13.99.

Because cancel culture makes me so angry, and because I think Ronan Farrow has been completely inappropriate to use his connections to try to censor access to the book, here's a link to it so you can all buy it. I just did.

Fuck you, Ronan Farrow.

Woody Allen says marrying Soon-Yi was ‘strictly financial’

In his new memoir, Woody Allen says he married his wife Soon-Yi Previn for purely financial reasons.

“As far as marriage was concerned, neither of us had any great need to formalize our relationship,” he writes in his book “Apropos of Nothing.” “We both felt that no contract is worth the paper it’s printed on if the parties are not happy. We loved each other and there was no need to resort to legislature. We would definitely not wed, and that was that. And then we married. Why? Not for romantic reasons but strictly financial.”

Pointing out the 35-year age gap between the pair, Allen, 84, continued, “I adored Soon-Yi and knew I was much older and could drop dead at a moment’s notice. If I did, I wanted her to be legally protected, to get all I owned automatically with no hitches.”

Allen and Previn, 49, decided to have a very quiet and private wedding in Venice, Italy in December 1997.

“As practical as our reason for marrying was, the wedding was very romantic,” he said, adding that the mayor was going to marry them secretly in an office and only in front of Allen’s sister and his close friend. Likening himself to James Bond, Allen explains that he left the hotel separately from Previn and took a gondola “through the canals and backwaters” to get to the wedding location.

After tying the knot in a secluded room, the couple also left separately, meeting back at the hotel by different routes.

“When we entered our suite the phone was ringing,” he writes. “It was Page Six from the Post. They’d heard we were in Venice and just got married. I looked under the bed before we consummated the marriage. We honeymooned two days later at the Ritz in Paris, and by then the secret had become headlines. Soon-Yi and I were husband and wife.”

He added, “It had little effect on the stock market, although Xanax went up ten points.”

Allen details his relationship with Previn — who is the adopted daughter of Allen’s ex-girlfriend Mia Farrow — throughout the memoir. He also dedicates it to her, writing, “For Soon-Yi, the best. I had her eating out of my hand and then I noticed my arm was missing.” He also addresses his tumultuous relationship with Farrow and accusations that he sexually abused Farrow’s daughter Dylan when she was 7 years old, which he has denied.

Woody Allen claims Mia Farrow was ‘unnaturally obsessed’ with Ronan Farrow in new memoir

Woody Allen sensationally paints Mia Farrow as a controlling and troubled mother who slept naked in bed with her “prized” son Ronan until he was 11, in his new memoir.

The Oscar-winning director goes into great detail about their ill-fated 13-year affair — and says that he still believes that Ronan, now an award-winning journalist, is his biological son, despite Farrow’s suggestion he could be the child of her ex-husband Frank Sinatra.

“I think he’s mine, though I’ll never really know,” he wrote in “Apropos of Nothing”, which was published on Monday. “She may have still been sleeping with Frank, as she hinted, and may have had any number of outside affairs, for all I know,” he added.

The “Annie Hall” auteur, now 84, claimed that Farrow, who has 11 living children, four of whom are biological and seven who are adopted, first told him she wanted to have his baby on one of their first dates, calling it a “red flag.”

Weeks later, while on a date at a Chinese restaurant, she suggested they marry, a suggestion Allen said he quickly brushed off — confessing in all their years together he never once slept the night at her home.

He accused her of being screwed up — and potentially molested. Allen described Mia’s family as “rife with extremely ominous behavior that swelled in the years I knew her.”

The star’s brother John Charles Villiers-Farrow was sentenced to 10 years in prison in 2013 for molesting boys. Allen writes that he heard a rumor “early on” that Mia’s brothers had been “aggressive” with the Farrow sisters and that “the Farrow brother who is now serving years in prison for child molestation has said that their father had molested him.”

Allen lashed out at Farrow’s parenting and obsession with adopting, claiming she treated orphans like “toys” — once sending back a Mexican infant from Texas for reasons only known to her.

He also claimed that Farrow also sent back a little boy with Spina Bifida who lived in her apartment for several weeks, because her son Fletcher found him annoying.

“If there were other kids she adopted and returned I have no idea — as I said, I lived on the other side of the park,” he wrote.

Even more damning, Allen alleged she liked “the saintly reputation, the admiring publicity, but she didn’t like raising the kids and didn’t really look after them.

She also frequently hit Soon-Yi, he claimed. Talking about Ronan, who was named Satchel at birth, Allen said Farrow was “unnaturally obsessed” with him “When Satchel was born, things took an even darker quantum leap. From his birth, Mia expropriated Satchel.

Allen wrote: “She took him into her bedroom, her bed, and insisted on breast-feeding him. She kept telling me she intended to do it for years, and that anthropological studies have shown positive results from tribes where breast-feeding goes on much longer than on the Upper West Side. Years later, two very professional and perceptive women who worked in Mia’s house, Sandy Boluch and Judy Hollister, the first as babysitter and the second as housekeeper, described numerous incidents. Sandy reports seeing Mia sometimes sleeping in the nude with Satchel (now Ronan) a number of times till he was eleven years old. I don’t know what the anthropologists would say about that, but I can imagine what the guys in the poolroom would say.”

Allen said he was first warned off from dating Farrow by Dory Previn, who said that Farrow had lured away her husband André Previn.

Years later, he said, Dory – who wrote a song about Farrow’s alleged betrayal called “Beware of Young Girls” — alerted him to a song she wrote called “Daddy in the attic” after Farrow accused him of molesting their young daughter Dylan.

“She told me Mia would sing it, and she was certain that’s what gave Mia the idea to locate a fake molestation accusation she would make in the attic.” Dylan and Mia have maintained that these allegations are truthful.

Allen writes at length about the battle over Dylan — and the fight to clear his name, claiming that Farrow had told him “I have something planned for you,” shortly after discovering he was sleeping with her adopted daughter Soon-Yi Previn.

by Anonymousreply 37March 23, 2020 10:19 PM

I believe Woody.

Everything I've ever read about her and interviews with her indicates Mia is fucking crackers and always has been...and, the Farrow family DOES seem deeply damaged and fucked up.

by Anonymousreply 38March 23, 2020 10:25 PM

R38 And the fact that Mia defended Roman Polanski, who drugged and raped a 13yr old girl, entirely blows her credibility for me.

by Anonymousreply 39March 23, 2020 10:30 PM

R33 So, romantic! s/

by Anonymousreply 40March 23, 2020 10:49 PM

Does he address his close friendship with Epstein?

Notice he doesn't dare address Ronan personally. He's totally intimidated by him because he knows Ronan would shit all over his sorry ass. Chester the molester is such a coward!

by Anonymousreply 41March 23, 2020 10:52 PM

R36 I do not believe his claim that Farrow wanted to marry him. It's well-known that she swore off marriage when her relationship with Andre Previn fell apart.

by Anonymousreply 42March 23, 2020 10:57 PM

Mia definitely molested Ronan, but she'll never be #MeToo-ed because nobody cares when it's a woman sexually harassing/assaulting a male victim.

by Anonymousreply 43March 23, 2020 10:57 PM

R38 I believe that Farrow is insane. I also think that Allen is a creep who molested Dylan Farrow.

by Anonymousreply 44March 23, 2020 10:59 PM

R44 I believe that Farrow is bonkers. I also think that Allen is a creep who has/had a thing for teen girls and shouldn't have had a relationship with his girlfriend's adopted daughter...but, he didn't molest Dylan.

Fixed!!

Woody Allen Says He'd 'Welcome' Daughter Dylan Farrow 'with Open Arms’ After Molestation Accusations

“One of the saddest things of my life was that I was deprived of the years of raising Dylan and could only dream about showing her Manhattan and the joys of Paris and Rome,” Allen writes.

Now married to Soon-Yi Previn — Mia Farrow’s adopted daughter — since 1997, Allen writes, “To this day, Soon-Yi and I would welcome Dylan with open arms if she’d ever want to reach out to us as Moses did, but so far that’s still only a dream.”

How about this, folks: both Woody Allen and Mia Farrow are incredibly fucked up. Music swells. The end. Roll credits.

by Anonymousreply 47March 23, 2020 11:13 PM

R45 No, I believe he molested Dylan.

by Anonymousreply 48March 23, 2020 11:13 PM

I'd be interested to read Woody Allen's book. I've already read Mia Farrow's book, "What Falls Away." You can't believe 100% everything you read, especially with these 2 people. They're both reprehensible.

One winter, during a blizzard, I read Tammy Wynette's "Stand by Your Man." After that, I read George Jones' autobiography. Hilarious to read both sides of that story.

by Anonymousreply 49March 23, 2020 11:20 PM

I buy Allen's side of the story. He really nails Farrow, and it provides a credible counterpoint that explains Ronan and his mother's codependent relationship. Allen's version is also funny.

I agree with R29.

by Anonymousreply 50March 24, 2020 12:19 AM

I never understood Frank Sinatra & Mia Farrow as a couple. She was a lot more attractive back then, and not just because she was younger. (She's unnecessarily frumpy now.) But how do you go from Ava Gardner to Mia Farrow?

IMO, Mia Farrow is the master at playing the "Damsel in Distress." Some men feel really stroked by playing savior.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 51March 24, 2020 12:26 AM

I believe Woody. It's my radar. I have been raised by yucky men and women on both sides of the gender gap and Mia Farrow pings. Woody doesn't ping for me. Is he a narcissist? Sure. But he also seems like a "dude" who was just an ignorant guy blindsided by a very damaged, scary woman. I don't see what he would have gotten out of molesting his little daughter. No one else has ever come forward with claims that he was inappropriate with them. Theres no smoke to back up Mia's fire. He's just a normal shmuck. I kinda get why he and Soon Yi clicked -- they had both been traumatized by Mia. They could bond around it. I'm sure it was life-affirming to exchange notes.

For those of you who thing his relationship with Soon Yi is proof positive that he could be a molester of little girls...most guilty people don't brazenly write books about their side of the story. They stay in the shadows. He and Soon Yi were an unlikely match but they had things in common -- namely not buying what Mia was selling, and wanting to get away from her. He acts like someone with nothing to hide. HIs career is in tatters because of this whole mess, and I feel bad for him.

Also Bryan Ferry of Roxy Music married his son's ex-girlfriend, but no one threw a fit about that.

by Anonymousreply 52March 24, 2020 12:54 AM

[quote] He also claimed that Farrow also sent back a little boy with Spina Bifida who lived in her apartment for several weeks, because her son Fletcher found him annoying.

I shouldn't find that hilarious, but I do!

LOL

by Anonymousreply 53March 24, 2020 1:03 AM

People "trust" themselves about something of which they are ignorant.

No evidence exists that Allen was indiscreet or abused or did anything inappropriate to the then-girl.

However, evidence of coaching, child-hoarding, horrid control, lies, passive-aggressive cruelty and a pattern of revenge on the scale of an obsession amply exists on Farrow's side.

Her moral bankruptcy is a matter of opinion.

Her sacrifice of her children, her family life, her career and her dignity for the sake of vengeance is a matter of record.

Now believe what you want. Because useless, deluded, tabloid-is-life-and-women-are-life's-perfect-victims twats and twat-adjacent fools are just the old-fashioned mob that they always have been. They've just moved on from other targets than black men and fallen women for their losers' bloodlust.

by Anonymousreply 54March 24, 2020 1:08 AM

As a gay man I feel instinctively really turned off by Mia Farrow. I can smell her neediness for her biological sons to love her like a lover. I imagine her childhood was very weird. I also have no problem believing that Ronan is a clear product of emotional incest. Moses isn't, because he was adopted and didn't come out of her uterus. So he's sane and is dropping his truth bombs while Ronan is protecting his mother-lover. It seems so obvious.

by Anonymousreply 55March 24, 2020 1:11 AM

R19 It’s not my pls e or yours to judge. It’s fine if we’re just girls chatting, but in reality it’s none of your business. I really shouldn’t have to explain this to a gay man. Unless you’re a frau.

by Anonymousreply 57March 24, 2020 1:25 AM

How much of his book is devoted to this saga? Does he talk extensively about any of his relationships with other women? Were they all fairly dysfunctional?

by Anonymousreply 58March 24, 2020 8:17 AM

Not surprised R37, Ronan and Mia always had/still have a weird incest vibe.

by Anonymousreply 59March 24, 2020 10:52 AM

by Anonymousreply 60March 24, 2020 11:33 AM

Mia and Frank were 30 years apart.

by Anonymousreply 61March 24, 2020 11:56 AM

by Anonymousreply 62March 24, 2020 12:49 PM

Good point, R61.

by Anonymousreply 63March 24, 2020 1:04 PM

R67 - Truly. I'll tell you why I don't believe Allen, regardless of how psycho Mia is: when he talks about Mia's response to finding out he'd been fucking their 17 year old stepdaughter, he uses the term "correct" - as if it had been some sort of multiple choice test. He says he "understands" her response, but he sounds curiously distanced from what had to be one of the elephants in the room: a young girl replacing her mother in a man's bed, especially a man who for years had occupied the position of "father" in the home (regardless of the lack of a DNA tie), is quite a complex and ugly psychological situation.

Woody Allen is one of the most unattractive men ever - he's just this side of Don Knotts, and the character he played in "Crimes and Misdemeanors" is the closest to the alter ego who didn't become rich and famous.

The idea that 17 year old novice couldn't keep her hands off that staggeringly unattractive (what's the word, schlemiel?) is redolent of the kind of fairy tale that older men tell themselves about very young women, especially older men with money and power of a sort. You can see it in Billy Wilder's "Love in the Afternoon" and in Wilder's "Sabrina", too, where men far too old for the part (Gary Cooper admitted when he saw "Love in the Afternoon" that he was way too old for the part by then) - the blissfully unawakened but hot to trot charming, quirky, knowing but still dewy fresh young thing drawn to the experienced older man like the proverbial moth . . .

Only Allen wasn't either Cooper or Bogart, and Previn wasn't Audrey Hepburn.

It seem obvious that the family as a whole was tangled in a dysfunctional web that probably included resentment against her mother on Previn's part, and sexual opportunism on Allen's part. Young girls leaping into bed with their stepfathers is never a sign that a relationship is healthy or remotely within the bounds of normal. Acknowledgement of this never seems to emerge in Allen's retelling of his little fairy tale.

He calls it "unfortunate" - as if it was just one of those odd little happenstances that prevent people from seeing how wonderful it really is . . .

It's more than unfortunate - it's actually horrifying in a way most people grasp if they give it two minutes of thought. He was her mother's lover, she was a young stepdaughter, he'd been fulfilling the position of father for years.

And, another of those elements is whether that was exactly what titillated Allen: her youth, inexperience, and his own anger at Farrow, perhaps. In "Manhattan", the only woman worth having, who really understands him, who is both innocent and lustful, turns out to be the 17 year old.

It looked bad because it was bad. I don't think Allen has ever acknowledged the obvious - for him, this was a dream come true.a

And that's why I don't believe him about the sexual abuse - I think he has a problem he refuses to acknowledge, and Previn was as close as he was ever going to get to living out his fantasy, and he went for it.

by Anonymousreply 73March 24, 2020 9:01 PM

I won't say anything negative about Woody's looks, but NO 17-year-old person wants to date a person in his or her 50s. Not even a rich, good-looking, or well-connected 50-something. Unless the younger person wants something (e.g. to use the older's person's connections or money, or to compete with other people who are pursuing the 50-something). But no 17-year-old will really LOVE the 50-something...unless the 50-something has conducted some fucked-up grooming.

by Anonymousreply 74March 24, 2020 9:19 PM

R73 She wasn't 17, you moron! I didn't even bother reading the rest of your post because you start on a false premise.

by Anonymousreply 75March 24, 2020 9:19 PM

Don Knotts was adorable.

by Anonymousreply 76March 24, 2020 9:37 PM

R73 that’s just the way he’s always been though to be honest — surely he’s more than a bit on the spectrum. But it doesn’t mean he’s lying (doesn’t mean he isn’t, either, but you get my point).

by Anonymousreply 77March 24, 2020 9:44 PM

R73: "...he'd been fulfilling the position of father for years."

That's just not true. Even Mia, in her memoir, says that he didn't do jack shit for those kids, and could barely stand being around them (except for the girl they adopted together). How is that a "father"?

by Anonymousreply 78March 24, 2020 9:54 PM

I'm not that far into the book, but I'm surprised at how bad it is. I've read his writing before, and thought he was a decent comedic writer, but his attempt at a memoir is terrible. First of all, the very first line has an obscure reference to Holden Caulfield. Does he not realize that Catcher int he Rye is not the touchstone it once was? Or is Allen's inability to see the changes in the world one of the reasons his last number of movies have been terrible? The book could have used a very strong editor, or an editor at all. Some sentences are so labored and confusing that they have to be read a number of times to be understood. And his writing is just...bad. I will slog on and finish it, but in no way is this a well-written memoir. Perhaps his vanity prevented him from seeking an editor who could have corralled it into a wonderful book. This ain't it.

by Anonymousreply 79March 24, 2020 10:51 PM

Eww and Eww.

by Anonymousreply 80March 24, 2020 11:01 PM

R75, she was most likely years younger when the grooming began than she was when they officially got together. It is always up to the adult to act appropriately, especially when acting in a parental role...

by Anonymousreply 81March 24, 2020 11:18 PM

[quote] First of all, the very first line has an obscure reference to Holden Caulfield.

Thanks, R79, for the the partial review. Catcher in the Rye is also symbolic of an adult who is there to "catch" a child who happens to perilously fall from a swing. Woody has no self-awareness.

by Anonymousreply 82March 24, 2020 11:22 PM

ewww ick...I can't imagine getting lustful over him

by Anonymousreply 83March 24, 2020 11:55 PM

FWIW, Don Knotts was a notorious skirt chaser.

by Anonymousreply 84March 25, 2020 12:54 AM

Sorry. Mia maybe nuts, but she was way hotter than Soon Yi.

No way would I’ve dumped Mia for Soon-Yi.

by Anonymousreply 85March 25, 2020 12:59 AM

I honestly think that age has made him unable to write coherent sentences. Here is but one line I just came across: "Besides the fact that Lincoln had freed the slaves, my knowledge of history was slim." There is so much wrong with just that one sentence, which easily could have been rewritten to have been correct and coherent. If he had any shame at all, he should be embarrassed at how badly written the book is.

Woody Allen has consistently created great art. And lots of crap but he always tried for the same. Aside from that who's to say what is his best and what isn't? Hannah and Her Sisters was a popular film, but it's not as good as Purple Rose of Cairo, or Broadway Danny Rose or Alice or Another Woman. There is lots to criticize and he has always objectified women. Yes for tits and ass - but he always makes those characters comical - to distance his desire. He has a different preferent type - More highbrow and neurotic, but his attention is no less skeevy. Mia was by far the most beautiful woman he was involved with and he showcased her small talent and tiny voice and incredible beauty in ways that she would never had the opportunity for without him. She should be grateful. They made some wonderful films together and most every frame makes it obvious that he was in deep love with her.

I love Diane Keaton, but Mia and Woody films are the best work of his life. She wanted it to continue. Personal lives are messy. Mia had too many blind kids and test orphans and nannies and all those dark rooms! It was necessary that Ronan should become a star. Mia saw him as a genius child from her loins + Woody seed. She made Ronan suck the tit until he was 11? No Woody, you can't say this. Ha.

I don't get Sondheim's son talent as a writer. As a journalist he is on par with a Vanity Fair writer. Not Maureen Orth or Gail Sheehy. Ronan does not impress. Give Truman Capote the Pulitzer when you give if for investigating feelings. Ronan has no real gift for writing - just connections. I don't get him.

Here is Woody being cruel to Diane Keaton. But he showed up. He's very odd with the women he adores. Insult humour or affectionate teasing is the way at these things. His comments are cruel, but he seems to mean love by them? Explains the dedication page on his book.

I am a fan of Woody Allen's film, no doubt. Diane Keaton was such a large part of his success. And they once were in love. He only shows what he can see of his women in film, which is all the more reason to believe that he loved Mia deeply. Because he can observe them quite cruelly. But what he showed of Mia was a strange and ethereal beauty, an earth mother, an outrageous comic and lovely figure full of awakenings and magic. There are films that define a director's love for his leading lady. Watch The Purple Rose of Cairo for Allen's Valentine to Mia. She's barely the star and she sure isn't glamorous. But his love for her is all over that film. Most of his films with her. He's not just giving her a different part - she was his greatest muse. I doubt that he fingered the kid in the attic.

Diane was more of a cold kind of appreciation. But she's kind of that way herself. The ACTRESS is hard to find. But she's lovely to watch. And the trick is that she's always an actress. Pretty much the same one. Woody immortalized her too. He made her more interesting than she is, because he was enamoured of her. She's a mass of neurosis and charm and hurt. He showcased that.

What has Dylan Farrow ever done but tweet syntax errors and fail to find the proper bra? She would have grown up in a wheelchair if Mia could pull it off. Suddenly stricken at 7?

r79 is right: the writing is mediocre-to-bad, and the Holden Caulfield reference does demonstrate how focused Allen is on the things that he liked in his childhood and early adulthood. The obsession with people like Mort Sahl and Groucho Marx is boring, and he doesn't seem to appreciate anyone who was famous after 1970.

by Anonymousreply 90March 25, 2020 3:55 AM

Your knowledge of Mort Sahl and Groucho Marks kind of puts you at 80 years old yourself Pa, R90? I had to google your attempt at insult. Every Woody Allen fan knows that he loves the Marx Brothers. I am decades younger than R90 but I never expect Woody Allen to be too progressive. His films are a tonal taupe white man's world. Makes them kind of timeless. Most of the time. But when he breaks free, though he is still an older filmmaker, he makes exuberant, great and colorful art. See Midnight in Paris or the one where everyone sings badly. Beautiful. He's a romantic. All those old films with Keaton. All of Allen's' romance with Mia films are pretty great too. Sometimes, only for her. He never let her falter even when he was filming their destruction. Mia should shut the fuck up and who the fuck is Mort Sahl?

by Anonymousreply 91March 25, 2020 4:16 AM

He worshiped Bob Hope too,

by Anonymousreply 92March 25, 2020 4:46 AM

So he is basically the straight version of a typical datalounger R90.

by Anonymousreply 93March 25, 2020 5:34 AM

R73, once again, Soon-Yi was NOT Woody's stepdaughter. Woody and Mia never married. Soon-Yi is (was?) Mia's adopted daughter, so not a blood relation to Mia or legally related to Woody. Still creepy, though.

by Anonymousreply 94March 25, 2020 9:52 AM

Am I the only one (gag) who thinks maybe Soon-Yi groomed Woody instead of the other way around? What better way to exact revenge on the woman you hate than to steal her man? She would have been well aware of Woody's interest in young women. And how did Mia find the pictures, anyway(s)? Well, I think she came out the winner here. She's kept a low profile and when Woody dies, she will be a relatively young, very rich widow.

by Anonymousreply 95March 25, 2020 10:23 AM

Soon-Yi is rough-looking 49. I thought all Asiatic women had some secret fountain of youth.

Remember when Mia said that soon-yi was like borderline retarded?

by Anonymousreply 96March 25, 2020 10:42 AM

"Does he not realize that Catcher int he Rye is not the touchstone it once was?"

MARY, R79!

by Anonymousreply 97March 25, 2020 1:13 PM

"I don't get Sondheim's son talent as a writer."

I don't get that sentence, R89.

by Anonymousreply 98March 25, 2020 1:13 PM

R89 is right. What a thoughtful comment. Mia shines in Woody's films. What other director would have given beautiful, but non-sexy Mia such screen exposure?

by Anonymousreply 99March 25, 2020 2:59 PM

[quote]Soon-Yi is rough-looking 49.

by Anonymousreply 103March 25, 2020 3:46 PM

Young untried pussy for Woody R103. Soon Yi, probably deliberate to get back at Mia. Doubt a young teenager would really find Woody attractive. He was a tool she was using to get back at someone she hated. Teenaged girls are nightmares and spiteful and vindictive.

by Anonymousreply 104March 25, 2020 3:51 PM

If it was just teenage revenge, R104, why did she marry him and stay with him for decades?

by Anonymousreply 105March 25, 2020 3:53 PM

Woody said Ratface Chalamet denounced him in public to increase his Oscar chances. At least Woody exposed him for the ambitious phony little shit that he is.

by Anonymousreply 106March 25, 2020 3:55 PM

Money R105. I'd do it too if I knew he would die and leave me a rich, still relatively young widow. Why so invested in this being some great love affair? Sheesh, young pussy gets rich, horny ugly old dude. Oldest story in the book.

by Anonymousreply 107March 25, 2020 3:56 PM

R107, she could easily have divorced him by now and gotten his money. Nice try.

by Anonymousreply 110March 25, 2020 4:02 PM

R106: Right? He also said he couldn’t say anything negative about Allen because it was in his contract. That was a total lie.

by Anonymousreply 111March 25, 2020 4:06 PM

I never understand the people who try to make the Woody-SoonYi relationship 'better" by pointing out that she was not technically his step child.

Why do they think that matters?

She was raised as the sister of Allen's child and the daughter of his partner. How does the legal status change the core issue?

by Anonymousreply 112March 25, 2020 4:33 PM

The core issue of who cares, R112? The core issue of is "it's none of your fucking business"?

by Anonymousreply 113March 25, 2020 5:01 PM

R112, don't engage this weirdly obssesed Woody-Soon-Yi cuntlicker. He's obsessed with the pair and think it's some odd contest about proving people wrong and Mia is evil. These types think they are in the "know" and Brad and Ang are star-crossed lovers and that type of shit.

It's a troll. Just block and ignore.

by Anonymousreply 114March 25, 2020 5:12 PM

R89) While I agree Woody's films with Mia showcased her quirky personality and soft-spoken manner, Roman Polanski was the director who seemingly lit her from within. She was luminous in Rosemary's Baby. That is the Iconic Mia.

I was just a child when RB came out but my older sister was a teen and I remember seeing magazine covers and spreads featuring Mia who was an It Girl at that time. Despite the fact she was not conventionally "sexy", the combination of her fey hippie charms + the Hollywood Royalty lineage helped make her an overwhelmingly popular star in the late 60's and early 70's. Before RB and while still a teenager, Mia was on hit TV series Peyton Place with another DL Fave, Ryan O'Neal. Peyton Place was the 91210 or Dawson's Creek of that era. Mia spawned thousands of pixie cuts when she cut her beautiful long blond hair. And then there were marriages to Sinatra and to Andre Previn.

Even if Mia had done nothing after Rosemary's Baby she still would have a place in the Hollywood/Fashion World/60's pop culture lexicon. She was the cinematic counterpart to Twiggy; the more successful and seemingly well-adapted West Coast version of Edie Sedgwick.

I've no dog in the Farrow vs. Allen feud. They are both clowns as far as I am concerned. But I do have an interest in pop culture, history, film, and fashion and to say Mia was not celebrated or utilized as a muse prior to Woody is simply not correct.

by Anonymousreply 115March 25, 2020 5:54 PM

by Anonymousreply 119March 25, 2020 6:20 PM

I will probably be flamed for this, but I really don't care who is right and who is wrong . That is not why I read the book. I wanted to know about his backstory, and his artistic process. The books is simply terrible, which disappointed me a great deal. It reads like a first draft . The grammar and punctuation are appalling. Given that the book was not developed under the aegis of a publisher, I am assuming that an editor had not been assigned to it. Why on earth did he not hire an independent editor? Is his ego that huge that he thinks everything he writes is perfect as is? He missed a great chance to leave behind a great memoir, instead of a badly-written piece of crap.

by Anonymousreply 120March 25, 2020 7:14 PM

Allen looks pretty decent for his age in Op’s pick. I don’t mean attracted-to-him decent but age-appropriate healthy and youthful looking (again, for his age). (Enough qualifiers in there to cut down on the nitpickers?)

by Anonymousreply 121March 25, 2020 7:19 PM

There's a scene in that Woody Allen documentary released back in 2011 in which Soon-Yi is shown complaining to their private butler in their Venice hotel suite that the temperature of their private pool is too cold. Woody tells his agent: "Seven years ago, she was eating out of dumpsters."

by Anonymousreply 122March 25, 2020 10:09 PM

R122 That cunty and inappropriately hilarious line has me convinced that Woody is a DLer.

by Anonymousreply 123March 25, 2020 10:11 PM

Well, Woody Allen was friends with Epstein so that shows what a piece of shit he is.

by Anonymousreply 124March 25, 2020 10:15 PM

You have to check out the 1995 made-for-TV movie Love and Betrayal: The Mia Farrow Story for a hilarious take on Woody, Mia and Soon-Yi. It is on YouTube. They present the teenage Soon-Yi as a stunner but my favourite line is her first response to seeing Woody - "WOODY NO GOODY!"

by Anonymousreply 125March 25, 2020 10:27 PM

R122 it’s always the trash that marry way way up (for money, I mean) that act the most ridiculously high maintenance. I hope he does give her a reality check when she pulls shit like that (but he probably doesn’t cause he’s basically a schmuck).

by Anonymousreply 126March 25, 2020 10:28 PM

Oh, don't go simples on us those pointing out she wasn't his stepdaughter, she wasn't his or Mia's biological child, he never behaved like a father to them . . .

The basics remain the same: she replaced her mother in the bed of the man with whom said mother had a child and who was the only senior male in the household. It's creepy for very good reasons.

From notes on the case from Wikipedia:

"Allen described his relationship with Previn as a "fling" that developed into a more significant relationship. Allen has called his role in their adult relationship after their marriage in 1997 'paternal'."

He was 56, she was, what 20? She was a college student. When profs are caught doing that, they get fired and lose tenure.

The overtones of the relationship are unmistakable. Now, she's 49 and he's 84. Within ten years of so she will be a very, very rich widow.

Allen was moving into old age. He probably knew this was his last shot.

No matter how you look at it or whether she was his legal stepdaughter or not or whether she was 17 or 20 - the thing reeks.

by Anonymousreply 127March 25, 2020 10:30 PM

I have no problem with him going on about Mort Sahl. Although he is an arcane reference and most people don't remember him, he WAS a huge influence on Allen, and on the comedy world at that time. How could Allen NOT talk about what influenced him? I think it is a totally different situation when you use someone like Holden Caulfield as a reference. The former acknowledges his influences, the latter just shows how out of touch with the modern world he is. I would say that he needs to update his list of references, but then again, he is ancient and not likely to make another movie or write another book, so why bother? He had a good run, but his inability to stay current has made him irrelevant.

Speaking of which, I don't understand "fans". especially ones who go to great lengths to defend people they don't even know. It's one thing to say "oh, yes, I like a few of his movies" but to be so invested in their personal lives is just weird and slightly pyschotic.

Epstein was a charismatic, intelligent self-made billionaire who made it a point to befriend every A-lister, influential, scientific and otherwise mover and shaker in NYC (and elsewhere). It's not clear that he revealed the seedier side of his lifestyle to every single person he befriended.

In other words, Epstein wanted to be in the In-Crowd but that's not to say everyone in the In-Crowd was into or aware of what he was into sexually.

And sputtering Ronan, who chooses to ignore that his MATERNAL uncle was convicted of child sexual abuse. There's only actual sex abuse on one side of his family. His crazy mother, Mia, has just taught him to look the other way.

[R10] That is false. It's one of the fake news propagated by Ronan Farrow. Allen was NEVER in therapy for "inappropriate behavior" with his daughter. What did happen was:

1) The family's therapist, Susan Coates, said Allen spent more time with her than with Ronan, and that wasn't ideal. But she categorically denied that there was anything remotely sexual in his behavior towards her. Also, she was originally hired as Dylan's therapist, not Allen's. The part about the "grossly inappropriate behaviour" is absolutely made up.

2) Allen's own therapist of 30+ years said in court that there was nothing in his profile to suggest that he was attracted to children.

3) Allen is well known as a proponent of psychotherapy, and he was in therapy for many years of his own volition. Nobody ever ordered him to.
