Should I finally start watching Game of Thrones?

Quarantine has given me so much free time....

by Anonymousreply 29March 25, 2020 5:11 AM

Could we get some pros and cons. I have the same question.

by Anonymousreply 1March 23, 2020 4:25 PM

I started watching again the other day. I didn't want to concentrate too much so I wanted to watch something I already saw before.

If you never saw it start from the beginning. If you have already seen it, start with Season 6 episode 1.

by Anonymousreply 2March 23, 2020 4:29 PM

Yes! It will inspire you to practice swordplay which will equip you for... what comes next.

by Anonymousreply 3March 23, 2020 4:30 PM

All you need to know is the nice little albino girl in episode 1 ends up becoming Hitler.

by Anonymousreply 4March 23, 2020 4:33 PM

Pros: It was a phenomenon. The most watched series ever in the whole fucking world. The characters are compelling, and well cast. The Storyline is fantasy rooted in European History. But there's nothing factual or real about the story. It stands on its own. A lot of purists complained that once the storyline got beyond the books it suffered. But those people fail to acknowledge that George R.R. Martin, the author did a detailed outline of the entire saga, and the storyline followed it, with a few deviations and embellishments. Which is normal when you go from a print narrative to something visual like film or TV. I always love historical dramas. I never intended to like it that much or watch all of it. But it hooked me even though it is fantasy and I've never been a fantasy fan. So I started watching it, fell in love with the cast, and got hooked. But at the middle of Season One, there were all these characters and families and it could get confusing, and a lot of them had backstories, so I decided I'd just read the first book so I could keep track of all the characters. I ended up reading all of the books. I can say, books one through three are excellent, fun reading. Book 4 rambles all over the place. Book five is an improvement of 4 but not by much. Cons: A lot of stuff you thought was important turns out to be not important. It pissed me off.

by Anonymousreply 5March 23, 2020 4:37 PM

The first seasons were the best. They dealt with character development and family relationships. I enjoyed them much better than the subsequent seasons.

The last two or three seasons were mostly about death counts, battles and special affects.

I would advise you to do the following: if you enjoy watching the first seasons and care about what happens to the various characters/families, continue to view. It's one of the best shows on which to invest your time.

by Anonymousreply 6March 23, 2020 4:48 PM

I say go for it. It's quite addictive.

by Anonymousreply 7March 23, 2020 5:03 PM

Go ahead, if you don't mind devoting 8 seasons' worth of your time to something that implodes at the very end. I was a fan of the books before the show and I don't regret watching it, but just prepare to be let down.

[quote]But those people fail to acknowledge that George R.R. Martin, the author did a detailed outline of the entire saga, and the storyline followed it, with a few deviations and embellishments.

I acknowledge that he wrote an outline, but how detailed it was has always been unclear. And there were a FUCKTON of 'deviations and embellishments', not just a few.

by Anonymousreply 8March 23, 2020 5:15 PM

No. I watched it all. While the settings are visually stunning, the plot based solely on vengeance, dragons, swearing (emphasis on the "c" word throughout), female nudity, and violence = the Classics Illustrated version of "Boys' Most Fevered Adventures."

by Anonymousreply 9March 23, 2020 5:17 PM

I started for first time ever 2 days ago and I’m done w season one. I’m hooked. At about episode 5 it clicked for me why it’s genius. I thought it was all fantasy but it’s actually very Shakespearean and mythological /psychological. And well acted so far. And hot people. I’m here for it.

by Anonymousreply 10March 23, 2020 5:26 PM

Loved it! Some hardcore shit (you will know it when you see it), but worthy of the praise.

by Anonymousreply 11March 23, 2020 5:31 PM

Just know that they don’t stick the ending. Not even close. In fact, the whole last season makes me look back on the series as a lesser experience because all of the buildup essentially amounted to nothing at all.

If that sounds like a worthwhile to spend 80 hours of your life then go for it!

by Anonymousreply 12March 23, 2020 5:34 PM

If you're in the mood for watching a lot of suffering, nastiness, pain and death.

by Anonymousreply 13March 23, 2020 5:34 PM

Nah. There are other better shows to watch like Chernobyl or Succession.

by Anonymousreply 14March 23, 2020 5:35 PM

It might be good to watch it so you can understand the cultural references, but as someone who was a big fan I’m going to tell you to skip it. I really loved the show, but would have vastly preferred if it had just been cancelled rather than be stuck with the absolutely terrible last two seasons. It’s ruined forever because of how half assed the show runners got. So if you do watch just be prepared for disappointment in the end.

by Anonymousreply 15March 23, 2020 5:40 PM

Hey, OP. Don't listen to the "I watched it and it's not worth it. " Watch it and form your own opinions. Yeahs it has flaws.Definitely controversy generated during the final season. But you watch it andform your own opinions. WTF not?

IMO, The Wire, Mad Men, The Sopranos, and Game of Thrones are the only TV shows you will ever need to watch. Period. Some people would say, "No, you have to watch Breaking Bad" or WTF ever. FIne. But take my word for it.

by Anonymousreply 16March 23, 2020 6:09 PM

It's like the Godfather. For years people will be quoting lines from the Series and it's worth it to watch it.

by Anonymousreply 17March 23, 2020 6:11 PM

Overrated softcore porn Medieval fantasy with tits and dragons😂

by Anonymousreply 18March 23, 2020 6:34 PM

Yes... Only the last season sucks.

by Anonymousreply 19March 23, 2020 10:10 PM

R16, Anyone with a list like yours that omits the OG "L&O" (Briscoe Years) hasn't an opinion worth considering!

by Anonymousreply 20March 23, 2020 11:19 PM

Actually, r17, it's a dead parrot. It has ceased to be. It is pining for the fjords.

And nowhere is it quoted, not even "You know nothing, Jon Snow."

by Anonymousreply 21March 23, 2020 11:22 PM

Again. As someone who has just started it myself during these quarantine days, I’ll say how ANNOYING it is that everyone says “yes watch it but the ending sucks” or “the last couple seasons suck,”. It’s rather pompous and arrogant. Let someone have their own experience please ? Also, I’ve found binging a show like this straight through gives you different perspective than someone who was along for the ride year after year, and had “their hopes and expectations up” for the finale etc. So - just fucking chill people.

by Anonymousreply 22March 24, 2020 12:58 PM

Fuck no. I couldn't get past 2 episodes. I don't like fantasy, though.

by Anonymousreply 23March 24, 2020 1:00 PM

I should have just said I agree with R18.

by Anonymousreply 24March 24, 2020 1:01 PM

The first two seasons were temporarily free on the Roku Channel in January but then they took it away before I could finish season 2.

Mildly entertaining.

by Anonymousreply 25March 24, 2020 1:03 PM

The last 2 seasons are bad fanfic.

by Anonymousreply 26March 24, 2020 1:19 PM

Hey. Everyone should form their own opinion. You binge watch it your first time you will react differently from some purist whose read all the books and extra side bar stories, etc, then watched it for ten years, gone on the various forums to discuss, debate, analyze, etc, and get "disappointed." There's a lot of room to enjoy it for its own sake between the extremes of opinions. So have fun with it.

by Anonymousreply 27March 24, 2020 2:19 PM

Well, it sustained a worldwide audience and it grew in popularity over 10 years. Was it flawed? Hell yes. But if you've never seen it, go for it.

by Anonymousreply 28March 24, 2020 2:45 PM

[quote]If you never saw it start from the beginning. If you have already seen it, start with Season 6 episode 1.

And skip over Hardhome? That's crazy talk. It's one of the best episodes the show ever did. Also, totally worth watching Mother's Mercy to end S5. That had a double gut punch with Cersei and Jon Snow. Such a devastating episode.

I understand there was a huge backlash against the last season, but don't listen to it, OP. The show is still worth the time. Oddly, it was never in my top tier shows until Season 6. I've watched the last season a few times now, and honestly, it gets better once you forgive the time constraints. The set pieces still knock me out. The Bells was incredibly shot. In fact, the last two episodes have some of my favorite shots of the show ever.
