Anyone watching “Little Fires Everywhere” on Hulu?
They have the first 3 episodes up now and the rest of the season will upload every Wednesday.
It’s addictive. It is not perfect but it is super entertaining and I am loving it. I watched all 3 episodes like nothing.
I usually am not a fan of Reese nor Kerry but they work well here, especially in scenes together.
SPOILERS AHEAD
I am not sure how I feel about either character, to be honest. Elena is way too try-hard but her ignorance constantly seeps through, while Mia has a chip on her shoulder she needs to shake off a bit. She also went about the baby thing all wrong.
Joshua Jackson doesn’t have much to do, but he looked great in his tighty whities!
I love Moody so much. Such a sweet guy, and I love Pearl too, so cute! I feel for Izzy but if it’s true she sexually assaulted her friend she should own it instead of mope around.
I hate Tripp and Lexie.
Tripp is clearly the moms favorite.

I’m confused about them having four kids in high school, that means she basically had a baby and then turned around and got pregnant right away three times? I know her editor made some quip about how she was out on maternity leave so much, but having a kid in each year in high school seems a bit preposterous?

The ages of kids threw me off and the youngest Izzy seems more like a middle school kid than high school. When it comes to writing, it would have made more sense if the older two kids were twins and seniors in high school.
Anna Sophia Robb will be playing Young Elena in episodes 5 and 6. I wonder if she's playing a teen Elena or a twenty something Elena who starts having kids and is secretly miserable as fuck.

It seems like Reese’s character would be one of those mothers who insisted on breast feeding, for the controlling nature over her children alone. For most women who do breast feed consistently ovulation tends not to return for more than six months after birth. Though pregnancy can happen before that, but three times is a lot, making her ultra fertile. Any book readers here who can shed light on this if it’s covered in the story?
Otherwise having four high schoolers seems like a plot device, an oldest senior sister for Pearl to be in awe of and want to be in her circle, a junior jock boy for her to crush on, a sophomore boy for her to be besties with and a freshman girl who ends up being a rival for her mother’s affection. And one does understand Izzy’s reluctance to go to High School with her three over achieving siblings all being there at the same time who have bound to have had every teacher she encounters and the for her to inevitably be compared to them.
As someone mention it would have made more sense for the oldest boy and girl to be twins at least.

I've watched the first episode. Witherspoon is in her element as a type-A mom. But, I don't buy her and Jackson as parents of four teenagers. I don't like the teenage romance stuff either. The series goes out of its way to place itself in the mid-90s. It's like a more insidious version of The Blind Side. I'll watch another episode to see where this goes.

I watched episodes 2 and 3 and I think it's better after a wonky first episode.
The leg shaving scene was really tender and sweet. You see how much Witherspoon's youngest daughter is trying to fit in and how it pleases the mother, all the while foreshadowing what is to come. The eldest daughter is perfect casting. Witherspoon can do her role sleepwalking, but she's quite enjoyable and campy at times. I think she was better in The Morning Show, though. Rosemarie DeWitt was good as well.
I concur that Washington only has one expression in general, but the vitriol expressed towards her in this thread is gross.
The teenage material has been handled better in My So Called Life. And that was 26 years ago. Depicting roughly the same era, give or take a few years.
The "that's my baby" scene was over-the-top.
I'm getting sick of the covers on the soundtrack. Just pay the money for the damn originals.

Maybe if it’s the adoptive mother who looses the baby and wants to get back at them? I agree. It has bugged me how this show has tried to make Mia the hero and Bebe sympathetic. I don't find Mia to be a hero and she's piece a shit for the whole thing with Pearl. I loved the scene of Pearl ripping her apart regarding the money from the photo sale. I get that some people end up in poverty due to job loss, generational issues, lack of education or job opportunities. illness, medical debt and similar things. Mia is a different story though. She could have kept her end of the bargain with the Ryans and finished her education.

R93 Be quiet? This is a fucking message board. Go back to your frau book club Reese Witherspoon. Here is the quote from the author Celeste Ng:
"A big part of it, for me, is acknowledging what I don't know. I've grown up in white communities my whole life, and like most people of color in the United States, I have a pretty good understanding of what it's like to be white in America — so I feel comfortable writing characters who are white. On the other hand, I don't claim to know what it's like to be black in America. I can imagine some aspects of it, but I don't feel I know that experience well enough to write about it. That's part of why I didn't write Mia as a black woman, as I mentioned above..."
So no Mia isn't black in the book. This show turns it into a race thing.

One of the weird things is that at the end of the 1990s the USA was flooded with Chinese girl adoptees, if that’s what the adopting mother wanted she had easy access with her wealth and would not have needed to choose a problematic abandoned child. And with their wealth and access to lawyers, why didn’t they investigate and clear up any issues at the start? And there’s been nothing said of the father, is he going to show up at the eleven hour and make his own claims?

R94 again, shut the fuck up whitey.
The book does not say what her race is. The author envisions the character as white, but she did not make the character white in the book and left her for everyone to have their own vision of what she is.
Reese did not make the show off of what the author envisions the character as but what she sees the character as. In her mind she envisioned a struggling Black woman.

Washington finally came into her own. She killed it. I hope her and Witherspoon both get nominated.
Great TV.
I kind of like how the story is all "Fuck the better life, I'm going to raise MY child in squalor."
Ironic that it's the gay kid who has to forge her own path.
I liked the photos at the end. Really nice touch.
I've never seen a bumper sticker come off a car so easily. Have they changed so this is possible.

Pretty badass that the three (good) kids are the ones who set the fire, didn’t see that coming. The child actors in this were across the board excellent. I wouldn’t be surprised if Reese, as a former child actor, knows a thing or two about how to create an environment that works to their advantage and gets remarkable performances from young people.
And she didn’t flinch in being the character that says by far the worst thing that anyone could say. I still wish that they would have hired competent actresses to play the adoptive and bio mothers of the baby, I can only think they were chosen to bolster the performances of Reece and Kerry, who in a way may have overextended their power as producers to do so.

I liked Kerry in this at times and disliked at others.
She is good with certain roles but serious drama isn’t one. She did fine though.
I liked her performance in Scandal and 100% understand and support her Emmy nom for that series. She was the first black woman to headline a major series and it not be a “black show” like Empire in decades.

I just finished episode 7, and Kerry Washington was phenomenal in that episode. I usually don’t care for her but she was wonderful in this episode. He little chat with Izzy was great.
Elena is pure evil frau.

R123, I took it to mean the grandparents. Pearl was pretty direct with her mother towards the end that she didn't need to meet the surrogate couple.
I could be wrong but I thought the surrogate couple also still lived in NYC. And Mia and Pearl were clearly out in the suburbs.

I didn't like Mia getting a somewhat happy ending. She wasn't as bad as Elena. But, I still think she's a piece of shit for screwing over Pearl's father and his wife.
I'm probably in the minority but I think Witherspoon deserves an Emmy nomination more than Washington. But, I'm rooting for more Zoe Kazan from The Plot Against America to get a nomination over Witherspoon or Washington. Kazan's character on that show was very likable mother figured compared to the characters played by Washington and Witherspoon.

I want both Witherspoon and Washington to be nominated, and specifically for episodes 7 and 8. Witherspoon went full unhinged in these two final episodes and Washington FINALLY shined bright, especially in the scene with Izzy where she is telling her it gets better, and the moment where she is reading what Pearl wrote in the car and she’s crying.

I enjoyed a lot of the series so much but too much of the final episode was eye-rolling, with plot developments right out of a 70s soap opera (the scene in the abortion doctor's office with the convenient file sitting on the credenza). I just read the Wikipedia description of the book and it ends a lot differently. I wonder how these authors feel when their work is adapted for the screen and the screenwriters change things up like they do. It's almost like they're saying "you screwed up the ending of your own book...I'll show you what should've happened"!

I agree. I loved this show (I mean I really loved it) but to have the oldest two children turn instantly was a bit over the top. I also don’t think Moody would have aligned himself with Trip so readily.
I love how they set the stage for it all by making Moody into an all-out unhinged psychopath toward the end. LOL.

R159, I disagree. I think Lexi would’ve done it by herself. She had been in a messed up headspace and after she confessed to Elena and Elena still ignored her, it would’ve been believable to have her go out of the way to prove she was the messed up daughter. Plus, it would’ve given her a great story for Harvard.
It’s the boys whom I don’t see burning down the house. Tripp was way too spoiled and pampered to throw it away, and Moody was too much of a good boy to do that.
Lexie was in a fucked op mental state though so she’s believable.

Completely disagree. I thought Washington was great and couldn’t stand the young version of her, who looked absolutely nothing like her. That actress also looked absolutely nothing like Nicole Beharie, whom she was supposed to resemble so much that McWoke couldn’t stop staring at her, followed her & proposed she carry his child. I did think she managed to capture a good deal of Washington’s mannerisms, enough that it helped to make up of the complete lack of resemblance but there was just no way to reconcile those two faces. AnnaSophie Robb also did a good job playing Reese and I bought the resemblance a bit more. That eldest daughter was perfect casting as a hybrid of Fug’s Creek & Reese.

Kerry had the same two or three expressions the entire show. And I can't believe people think Elena is worse than Mia--Mia basically stole someone's baby. The conversation between Mia and Pearl about that made no sense. After resenting her mother, she just forgives Mia almost instantaneously for stealing her away from her real parents with who she would have had a much better life with? Completely ridiculous. Both Mia and Bebe deserved to be punished for their behavior yet Elena got the worst doled out to her.

My point is that Mia shows up and is a fucking bitch to everyone, acting like she is poor and gets pissed off when Elena wants to be nice to her in any way. Elena tries many different approaches with Mia and none of them are right. You can't win with Mia. But then you find out that she has no reason to act so high and mighty because she is no better than anyone else. At least Elena was nice to people.

R195 I thought Elena was awful. but Mia wasn't any better. On reddit, a couple of Facebook groups, and twitter, most people trash Elena and rarely point out Mia's flaws.
I haven't read the book. I looked at reviews on Amazon and someone said in their review that they didn't get why Mia was seen as a hero in the book and that she was a mess like Elena.
While it's possible Pearl might have had a crappy life with the NYC couple. It was still crappy on Mia's part to lie about a miscarriage and lying to Pearl that the father didn't want to be a parent. I'll admit that I had sympathy for the NYC couple because the wife seemed quite sad about not being able to have children. I also sympathized with Linda and Mark too when the baby was taken again.
by Anonymous | reply 201 | May 1, 2020 6:59 PM

R201, agreed. It seemed like Mia was just a huge bitch to a lot of people for no reason. And yet, she's supposed to be the heroine? I never once empathized with her. I don't see Elena as being completely horrible but she is absolutely self-absorbed and it caused large problems with her kids. But let's be honest, those kind of women are a dime-a-dozen in upper-middle class suburbia. Neither Mia nor Bebe are portrayed well enough for the audience to be sympathetic to them. And that ending with Bebe taking her baby from Mark and Linda's really angered me. She gave up her right to be a parent when she left her kid outside. Mark and Linda adopted her fair and square. Therefore, Bebe has no right to the baby. And Mia taking her side is obvious--one baby stealer supporting another.

White fraus always consider black women bitches if they don't act like mammies. There was nothing wrong with Mia's demeanor. She was standoffish, for obvious reasons; like anyone with a brain, she had little patience for Frau Patrol's self-congratulatory bullshit; and she was enormously generous to Izzy, to Bebe, and even to Lexi, who deserved nothing. She agreed to stay in that horrible town because she saw her daughter was happy there, even though the place had little to offer her.
The couple in NYC taking advantage of a young, broke virgin did not seem like they'd make great parents to me, given their complete lack of ethics. I did think it was fucked up that the show demonized DeWitt, since neither she nor her husband had any way of knowing that the baby's mother was alive, regretted her decision, lived in town, etc. As far as they knew, the placement and possible adoption was on the up and up. The only villain in this story is Elena and that was obvious from her first appearance on screen. I do have to wonder why Reese keeps casting herself as irredeemable cunts, though.
