She tested negative for flu.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | March 22, 2020 12:54 AM |
They give you a test for flu first. Then they test you for the coronavirus. That’s what I understood the sequence to be.

My brother tested positive and are awaiting my SILs results. She's a cancer survivor so seeing this...very scary.

Yes I made a silly joke, but this is horrifying. It's going to more random in the states than elsewhere. USA in VERY dicy situation with completely bungled national preparation, no universal health care, and shitty to no safety net.

Is it? Or is there just a different reporting standard? The US media can't be beaten for fear mongering.

Tragic stories
by Anonymous | reply 15 | March 22, 2020 1:48 AM |
Georgia and Louisiana have high rates of fatality. China had a rate of 1.4% in the beginning and Georgia has a rate of 3.6% (20 dead, 555 cases). Those 20 people died in 3.5 days. Louisiana has a fatality rate of 2.7% (but the rate is based on figures that haven't been updated)
The high fatality rates are a serious thing. China didn't start off this bad. America is in serious trouble

She may have had an underlying condition she didn't know about, like this 21 year old guy in Spain

by Anonymous | reply 21 | March 22, 2020 2:03 AM |
What's really disturbing is that in so many stories you read about someone dying from this virus, the victim was feeling better and thought they were recovering. For example, that female Chinese doctor in the NY Times story, the gay lawyer, now this lady,

A pattern has emerged where people begin to feel that it’s getting better for a short while and then they go downhill fast. It was on ABC News where they interviewed the previous surgeon general.
So now even feeling better is a bad sign.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | March 22, 2020 2:14 AM |
Please don't be too literal and get hung-up on the "dry cough, fever" thing. It seems to affect each individual differently.
I think there are different strains out there- some deadlier than others. And I think you can contract one or more of them. And I think if you are vulnerable in a certain area (COPD, heart problems, immunity problems, diabetes...) it seems to hone-in on that and exacerbate it. Just evil.
Mine happened very quickly: diarrhea, vomiting, chills, fever, sweats, aches, insomnia, headache, extreme fatigue, loss of appetite. A feeling of having a tire roll over top my chest. I fainted once.
Within 3 hours I went from normal/fine to very, very sick.
"What are the symptoms of coronavirus?
The first symptom is usually a dry cough or sore throat. This can be quickly followed by a fever and then, in some cases, fatigue. Some people develop shortness of breath around the sixth day after first starting to feel unwell.
Anything else I should watch out for?
The course of the illness varies from one person to another, but other symptoms include headaches, dizziness and confusion, diarrhea, difficulty walking, nausea or vomiting, as well as loss of appetite.
In severe cases — which are most common in the elderly and those with high blood pressure, heart and lung problems or diabetes — it can cause pneumonia and kidney failure, and can kill."

Lol are you a high-level official in the Chinese Ministry of Health?
The Chinese government is not providing their actual Covid-19 disease numbers. Take the numbers that they are providing and add a zero. Trust me, when it comes to infectious disease numbers China is lying.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | March 28, 2020 10:21 PM |
I've been gobsmacked that people have been saying rates are down in China when everyone knows official reports from there are nothing but lies. I mean they could be down but why would anybody take their word for it? God knows how many dead people are in homes, apartments and buildings that were sealed to keep people from breaking quarantine.

RIP, lovely person. And that 17 year old kid in California turned away because he was a kid without insurance, and all the people in Queens, or in New Orleans, or everywhere this is hitting.....my heart goes out to you and I play a dirge for lives lost in this pandemic every night. I will do so until my time comes.
OP, this woman was not a 'frau' - or a woman of a certain age with an entitled attitude. She was too young and too lovely for that definition. I wish you could edit this title because I'd hate to have someone who loved her realize it's a derogatory term here on the DL. I hope you meant no offense, as I do pointing this out.
So much death now. I'm having a hard time of it despite all my training. Take care, DL, all of you.

Remember that this is a board where people seemingly never retire their old, worn-out terms and expressions: they're still using "what's on his/her iPod," "...is dead to me!" and "[insert building name] is an insatiable bottom" as if they didn't cease to be remotely witty years ago.

[quote] I think there are different strains out there- some deadlier than others. And I think you can contract one or more of them.
We get that you think those things, but on what are you basing this, R28? Your notion that there are different strains and you can contract more than one of them does not appear to be supported by any scientific evidence. Is this some hunch or a feeling based solely on anecdotal information that is being reported by the media?
Without some evidence to back this up, it becomes nothing more than speculation and conjecture.

by Anonymous | reply 51 | March 29, 2020 7:08 AM |
R40 You "China is lying" trolls are really stupid. China went to extraordinary length in testing and contact tracing to identify the infected and gave every infected patient free treatment to get this virus under control. The US is doing none of that. With incompetent politicians in charge, the virus will result in 10% death rate here just like Italy.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | March 29, 2020 7:17 AM |
I suspect that a lot of these cases in Louisiana might be tied to the Mardi Gras festivities - particularly New Orleans! Date February 25, 2020.
Big crowds, people close together.
A small number of infected people could have passed the virus to scores of others and so forth.
I assume that's one of the reasons that Louisiana has so many cases.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | March 29, 2020 7:29 AM |
R52 they are trying to redirect outrage. they allow one form of outrage ("testing") but otherwise they want us to direct this at an external enemy & blame each other for engaging in normal behaviors after getting very mixed messages from the US gov.
look anywhere but the main avenue through which we could actually get relief or try to hold anyone accountable. no way for the U.S. to hold China accountable for a known health risk that infectious disease specialists have been saying has been long overdue for my entire lifespan.
the "rulers" (nominal and factual) are very worried we will figure out exactly who is to blame in our current predicament, and go get our pitchforks.

China is definitely lying. At first I believed their miraculous figures that such a crazy, deadly virus had been stamped out but now seeing how it's progressing in European countries in lockdown where there are hundreds of deaths daily of people who must have caught the virus weeks ago, I can't believe that everyone who caught it in China is either dead or recovered, with only2690 active cases of which only 742 are serious. Especially since the virus was unheard of until December and who knows how long it was spreading in China before it was discovered.
No way is a country with a population of over 1.5 billion having between 0-5 deaths a day from the virus and almost no new infections, especially since it started there.
And China is NOT doing any widespread testing at present. There is a lot of dodgy shit going on with China right now.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | March 29, 2020 10:31 AM |
R58 China is not lying. Westerners are just too stupid to do what is necessary to save their own lives.

[quote] I wonder how well insurance covers the cost for those who survive ICU?

by Anonymous | reply 60 | March 29, 2020 12:49 PM |
R59, I'm in a European country that is under an extremely strict lockdown right now - you need ID to step out the house, which you're only allowed to do for grocery shopping, medical/care reasons and a tiny amount of exercise around the block. You're only allowed to be out with people from your own household. There are fines and arrests if you violate those rules. Schools, universities, shops have been closed for weeks. In offices and companies only one person is allowed to be in the building/individual spaces. This is also a country that had relatively very few cases when it went on lockdown.
It's because I'm living through "what China did" for myself that I can tell you that China's figures are bullshit. Even with locking everyone indoors, that virus would still be spreading even if at much lower figures. And now they're lifting some of the restrictions but the figures are only a handful of new cases a day, as if the virus has been killed off in China.
How comes the virus in China was pretty much only limited to Wuhan yet it still managed to reach Europe via people travelling from Wuhan? Don't the residents of Wuhan ever go anywhere in their own country? Just the fact it was supposedly confined to Hubei province is strange enough. Sure, they went on strict lockdown but the virus was completely new and unheard of until and was only identified as a coronavirus 90 days ago after people in Wuhan had been dying. And even after it was discovered there was a big cover-up by the Chinese authorities, so no action was taken until weeks later. Please don't tell me that in those 3-4 weeks the virus hadn't been spreading rapidly within Hubei and the rest of China.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | March 29, 2020 1:06 PM |
You'd have to be naiive to believe China's numbers. The way they reacted denotes a response which respects a shockingly higher CFR than they are letting on---say something more like 80,000 to 100,000 deaths and 1 million cases. And now of course comes the PR blitz to turn that legitimate anger against them more toward gratitude. Look how generous we are! We will save you! Then you will sell us your precious assets at knock-down prices. Well ok China, but only if you will eradicate your destructive elite cultural practices the way you mow down other culture's forests. Tit for tat. Criss cross, get it?
by Anonymous | reply 62 | March 29, 2020 1:31 PM |
Who are the assholes who believe anything Chinese officials say? Divide and conquer? Please shut your traps and never speak to another soul ever again. You are too dangerous. Or better yet go to the reopened wet markets there. I understand they have an all you can eat bat buffet on Monday nights.

It looks like the Spanish flu of 1918 actually came from the farmlands of the Midwest. It was spread by US soldiers in training camps about to be shipped off to war. They spread it throughout the disease literally shit and body part infested trenches of Europe after which it spread throughout the world.
