The unverified image was released by Jacob Engels, who has connections to the Proud Boys.

A week after Florida politician Andrew Gillum was found at the site of a potential meth overdose, a website run by a gay right-wing blogger has published an alleged nude photo from the incident.

The image — the veracity of which has not been confirmed by The Advocate — shows a man purported to be Gillum, the 2018 Democratic nominee for Florida governor, lying naked on the floor with his head on a towel covered in vomit.

Blogger Jacob Engels, a gay right-wing activist who runs the website Central Florida Post, said he obtained the photograph with the help of Enrique Tarrio, a congressional candidate in South Florida and a member of the Proud Boys, designated as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

The validity of the photograph has not been confirmed and has been digitally censored. Right-wing celebrity James Woods, known for homophobic and transphobic rhetoric, already shared the image to his 2.2 million followers.

It’s important to note Engels has been affiliated with the conspiracy site InfoWars and, like that site’s founder Alex Jones, has been banned from Twitter for hate speech.

The image was published the same day the Daily Mail published pictures allegedly taken in the same hotel room where Travis Dyson was found in potential cardiac arrest.

Those photos, which also have not been verified, show beer bottles, prescription pill bottles, and bags of what appear to be crystal meth scattered around the room.

The Daily Mail photos were allegedly obtained by police through the Freedom of Information Act, but the images would typically be exempt from public release because they're evidence in a criminal investigation.

In both sets of photos, there are floorboards that appear consistent with those in the Mondrian Hotel, where the incident occurred.

After a police report detailing the potential drug overdose became public, Gillum released a statement denying any drug use and said that he had too much to drink that night.

“I was in Miami last night for a wedding celebration when first responders were called to assist one of my friends,” he said.

“While I had too much to drink, I want to be clear that I have never used methamphetamines. I apologize to the people of Florida for the distraction this has caused our movement. I’m thankful to the incredible Miami Beach EMS team for their efforts. I will spend the next few weeks with my family and appreciate privacy during this time.”

Multiple media sources have since reported Dyson maintained a profile on the website Rent Men and listed himself as a “pornstar performer.”

A few days after the incident, Gillum checked himself into rehab for alcohol abuse. He said then he fell into a depression shortly after losing the governor’s race to Republican Ron DeSantis.

“This has been a wake-up call for me,” Gillum said. “Since my race for governor ended, I fell into a depression that has led to alcohol abuse. I witnessed my father suffer from alcoholism and I know the damaging effects it can have when untreated. I also know that alcoholism is often a symptom of deeper struggles. I am committed to doing the personal work to heal fully and show up in the world as a more complete person.”

Gillum came up short in the election by less than 33,000 votes, about 0.41 percent of the vote. He campaigned regularly with wife R. Jai Gillum.

This so called mistake by Mr. Gillum is a career ending moment. He will never ever come back from this.

Fundraising for a political campaign is apparently not that easy when you and all of your closest friends have been kicked off a host of websites and credit card platforms for being in a neofascist street gang with close links to white nationalists and people who commit acts of violence and seem to enjoy sharing racial slurs online.

Just ask Proud Boys chairman Enrique Tarrio, the Miami-based head of the pro-Trump, street-fighting Proud Boys, who announced November 1 a run for U.S. Congress. According to documents filed with the federal government last week, Tarrio has raised almost no money in the three months since announcing his candidacy for Florida's 27th congressional district, which is held by Democrat Donna Shalala.

January 30, Tarrio submitted his federal paperwork for the last quarter of 2019 — and reported zero itemized contributions. In a statement to the Federal Elections Commission, Tarrio said his campaign committee has not received more than $5,000 and therefore does not need to report contributions to the government yet.

"This Committee has not yet exceeded the $5,000 reporting threshold that would trigger the Committee's reporting responsibilities under the Act," his campaign wrote.

Reached by phone, Tarrio claimed he hasn't been actively fundraising since he announced his candidacy roughly 90 days ago. That might not be the sharpest of campaign strategies, because his significantly more well-funded Republican opponent, Maria Elvira Salazar, reported raising $365,000 in the fourth quarter of 2019. But even Salazar's total contributions pale in comparison to Shalala's in that timeframe: In the last three months of 2019, Shalala pulled in $600,000. Salazar is sitting with $717,000 in cash, while Shalala has a $1.2 million war chest. Meanwhile, Tarrio has, in political terms, basically no money with six months to go before the August primaries.

Tarrio tells New Times he has simply not made much of a fundraising push yet but has raised "$2,500 to $2,900" so far. (Anyone, however, can freely donate on his website, and it seems like no one has been excited enough to click the "donate $5,600 for the primary and general election" or "$11,200 couple's max donation" buttons.)

"I only held my first fundraising event on the 25th of January," he says. "I hadn't done a lot of Facebook shares or media. I didn't advertise yet or anything. I've basically just had those stories that said I'm running."

Tarrio has also been kicked off nearly every social media platform because he's been spending his free time running a violent street gang. He's banned from Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook, though he's flouting his Facebook ban once again by posting under the name "Rigoberto Tarrio." (He will likely be booted again.)

The Proud Boys claim the bans are unfair, but as New Times recounted in 2018, members of the group had been spending loads of time throwing around the N-word, racist memes, Holocaust denial jokes, and even one seemingly pro-Harvey Weinstein meme online before their ban. The group — started by Vice founder Gavin McInnes to "glorify" Western men — also has repeatedly been caught committing violence or endorsing white nationalism. (The group "disavowed" one such member, Jovanni "Jovi Val" Valle, after he endorsed neo-Nazism.) Other members have been sent to prison for beating people in Manhattan and been caught in chat logs plotting violence. In one case, a Proud Boy was accused of using a sword to murder his brother. Tarrio himself attended the 2017 Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, where a white nationalist killed a leftist protester. Despite those concerns, Donald Trump acolyte Roger Stone admitted in court in 2019 that he hd employed Tarrio and other Florida Proud Boys to help run his social media and PR campaigns.

Last year, Chase Bank booted Tarrio from its platform and closed his bank account. Tarrio is also banned from using the credit card payment processor Stripe; he says numerous Republican Party fundraising platforms use the service.

Was Andrew Gillum Set Up? Explicit Hotel Photos Leak As Sunken Conservatives Rejoice

Conservatives were rejoicing after explicit photos leaked showing purported images from the hotel room where Andrew Gillum was involved in a suspected drug incident last week. Their reactions (and actions) could lend further credence to the suspicion that Gillum, the former mayor of Tallahassee and candidate in Florida’s 2018 gubernatorial election, may have been the victim of some type of political setup.

While those suspicions have not been confirmed, at least one of the images circulating online was published by someone who the Advocate called a “far-right gay blogger.” That photo showed a Black man who resembled Gillum, a married father of three, lying nude on the floor with his head turned to the side on a towel that looked to have vomit on it.

The salacious tabloid Daily Mail also published several other images purportedly from the same Miami Beach hotel in which Gillum and another man were reportedly found intoxicated and vomiting early on the morning of March 13. Those images showed everything from little baggies contained with white powder, prescription drug containers with white pills spilled and “a small bottle of an injectable medicine containing alprostadil which is typically used to treat erectile dysfunction and should never be mixed with alcohol,” all in a very messy hotel room where a third man was also present.

The other man in the room was later identified as Travis Dyson, a male escort who contradicted Gillum’s public apology for the unfortunate episode. Gillum said he was in Miami “for a wedding celebration when first responders were called to assist one of my friends.” Dyson, who was treated for a drug overdose, was later contacted by a reporter and denied knowing anything about a wedding. Dyson said he and Gillum have “been friends for a while” and that he “personally was not celebrating a wedding.”

Initial reports indicated methamphetamines were involved, prompting Gillum to first deny he’s ever used the drug before he voluntarily entered rehab on Monday for what he described as “alcohol abuse” and “depression” that he said followed his campaign to be governor. The admission was entirely out of character for a rising star within the Democratic Party who presented himself as the consummate family man with a Twitter bio that identifies himself to 633,000 followers as: “Father of three. Husband to R. Jai. Proud Floridian.”

The publication of the explicit photos was met with glee by several prominent Republican activists, including Isaiah Washington, Candace Owens and James Woods, whose once-promising acting career has been replaced by constant pro-GOP social media trolling. Washington, an unabashed supporter of Donald Trump‘s racist presidency who was famously fired over homophobic comments, even went so far as to compare Gillum to “a Slave.”

Owens, a suspected con artist who has openly mocked the “mass hysteria” over the coronavirus and once spoke of Adolf Hitler in sympathetic terms, was among the first to tweet that Dyson was “an openly gay man” after the news of what she called Gillum’s “drug/sex party.” One week later, after the photos were published, she deflected accusations of homophobia in one tweet and politicized Gillum’s incident in another.

That was followed by Woods tweeting the actual photo of the unclothed man said to be Gillum — a photo that also showed the bare foot of an apparent white person who may have snapped the picture, reinforcing suspicions that the photo was taken for political reasons and may have been the result of some type of setup.

“Just remember, this could have been Florida’s governor in the midst of the #WuhanCoronaVirus pandemic,” Woods wrote in his tweet. “Make sure you vote #Republican in November like your life depends on it. Because it does.”

A police report claimed that the Miami Beach Police Department was called to the Mondrian Hotel at 1100 West Avenue just before 1 a.m. March 13 pertaining to a suspected drug overdose. Gillum, Dyson and a third man, Aldo Mejias, were inside of the hotel room when the Miami Beach Fire-Rescue arrived to treat a possible overdose Dyson.

Mejias told officers that he gave Dyson his credit card information on March 12 to book a hotel room for that evening. The men were supposed to reconvene later. Mejias reportedly told officers that when he arrived at the hotel room around 11 p.m., Dyson opened the door, collapsed on the bed and began vomiting. Mejias said he gave Dyson CPR and called the paramedics. He also said that while giving Dyson CPR, Gillum was in the bathroom, vomiting, according to the report.

Officers reportedly attempted to speak with Gillum but were unable to “due to his inebriated state.” Miami Beach Fire-Rescue said it returned to the hotel a second time to do a “welfare check” on Gillum, who authorities said by that time was stable and had normal vitals.

According to the police report, officers found three small baggies of “suspected crystal meth,” which were located on the bed and floor in the hotel room. The suspected drugs were taken as evidence.

However, there were no criminal charges for any of the men involved and officers said that Gillum left the Mondrian Hotel room “without incident” and returned to his home.

Gillum, who was previously reported to be on a shortlist of potential Democratic vice presidential running mates, said he “will be stepping down from all public facing roles for the foreseeable future.” The CNN analyst had at one point even met with former President Barack Obama amid speculation about his own possible 2020 presidential campaign.

Even still, the fortunate truth for Gillum is that he works in a profession where worse deeds — whether alleged or true — have been readily forgiven by voters plenty of times. That fact still leaves open the very good chance of Gillum’s triumphant return to politics.

Perhaps the biggest loss is Gillum having to step away from the good and important work he was doing as the chairman of Forward Florida Action, a political group that describes its objective as “registering and reengaging voters who are often unseen and unheard, electing more leaders that share our values to local office, and making the state legislature more diverse.”

This was absolutely a set up. Not in the sense that someone tricked him into doing drugs and something more with a male prostitute (although it's possible he was drugged as well) but in the sense that the wrong people knew his proclivities and made sure to get him on camera in a compromising position to destroy his career. Police response was just too bizarre. And there's no other explanation as to how that pic ended up on some wingnut website.

As to why, that's easy: he was a rising Democratic star AND big in voter registration efforts. His "Arrive with 5" campaign in 2018 was huge and a big reason for Dem success in FL that year, especially the voter restoration amendment. Even though Gillum lost, it was a razor thin margin--the closest in 2 decades of GOP dominance--and was a really bad sign for 2020. Since then Gillum's been on a massive voter mobilization drive and if he succeeded, FL would absolutely turn blue. And if his private habits were in fact well known, he was an easy target. The GOP is vile, but more importantly they play the long game. They know the value of cutting small but promising people like Gillum off at the knees. They're plotting to take down Stacey Abrams as well, trust. Hopefully she keeps her shit tight and outsmarts them.

Andrew Gillum hotel room incident: Miami Beach police reviewing apparent record leak

The Miami Beach Police Department is conducting an internal review into whether records in the Andrew Gillum hotel room incident were leaked through unofficial channels.

Police reports first surfaced the morning of March 13 not through Miami Beach police but via the Twitter feed of Candace Owens, a conservative commentator and author.

The reports, later obtained by news outlets, detailed a police call to a South Beach hotel where Gillum was found inebriated and in the company of a reputed male escort who had overdosed. Several small baggies of suspected meth were found in

Ernesto Rodriguez, spokesman for the Miami Beach Police Department, said a review is underway into how the incident report got out before its official release to media organizations.

“It’s unknown how the report was shared,” he said in an email, “and yes it is being looked at.”

The review is happening at the same time a British tabloid published photos — none of which have been authenticated by officials — that were purportedly taken in the room. The tabloid said it got the photos “under Freedom of Information law.”

But Rodriguez said Miami Beach PD has provided only one document — the incident report — in response to public records requests.

"I am the sole spokesperson for the MBPD," Rodriguez said in an email. "I can assure you no PRRs have been fulfilled besides the incident report. When they are complete, my intent is to share them with everyone who has requested, at the same time."

Rodriguez also explained why no arrests were made despite the discovery of suspected narcotics in the room.

"We responded to a medical call," he wrote. "The narcotics, although in plain view, were not in physical possession of anyone inside the room. The officers chose to impound the narcotics."

A Gillum spokesman declined to comment on this story.

Gillum, a 40-year-old married father of three, served as Tallahassee city commissioner and mayor before an improbable 2018 bid for Florida governor as the Democratic nominee. He lost to former GOP congressman Ron DeSantis.

After the hotel scandal broke, he apologized, saying he "had too much to drink" that night but never used methamphetamine. Two days later, he announced he would retreat from public life and enter rehab for an alcohol problem he developed after his loss.

“I know the damaging effects it can have when untreated,” Gillum said. “I also know that alcoholism is often a symptom of deeper struggles. I am committed to doing the personal work to heal fully and show up in the world as a more complete person.”

By Steve Contorno Published Earlier today Updated Earlier today A police call earlier this month to a Miami Beach hotel room involving methamphetamine and a passed-out man brought to a crashing halt the once-promising political career of Andrew Gillum, the most recognizable face in the Florida Democratic party.

Can Gillum come back from this episode? It’s unlikely, Florida’s political class said.

The Tampa Bay Times surveyed 160 of Florida Insiders about Gillum’s future and 127 — 80 percent — said they don’t expect Gillum to ever run for office again.

“The Andrew Gillum story is a sad one,” one independent said. “None of us, other than Gillum and the parties involved, know what happened in that hotel room. But it is clear that Gillum is not the person he represented himself to be to the voters.”

The Insiders are former elected leaders, campaign operatives, activists, lobbyists, fundraisers and other experts of all political stripe. The anonymous answers in these non-scientific surveys encourage honest answers from people, many of whom have worked alongside and against Gillum. Across the board — Democrats, Republicans and others — respondents didn’t see Gillum bouncing back from this.

One Democrat called Gillum’s actions “reprehensible and hypocritical, in additional to being politically fatal.” Another Democrat was flummoxed that anyone in the party would defend Gillum.

“If that doesn’t disqualify you for public office I don’t know what does,” that Democrat wrote. “If Gov. Ron DeSantis, (House Speaker) Jose Oliva or insert any Republican’s name did that, there would be an outright cry from the left.”

Police say there were two men also in the room with Gillum, one who called 9-1-1 and another who had collapsed. The latter had a profile on a website for male escorts. Gillum said he was in town for a wedding and had too much to drink.

This wasn’t the first scandal to rock Gillum’s political prospects, several Insiders noted, making him “already unelectable,” one Democrat said. Questions of cronyism followed Gillum’s time as a Tallahassee councilman and mayor, and a FBI investigation into corruption into the capitol city dogged his campaign for governor. Another federal inquiry into Gillum’s political machine popped up last year.

As one Republican put it, “You only get so many chances.”

Gillum narrowly lost to DeSantis in 2018 in an election decided in a hand recount. It was expected Gillum would launch a bid for a rematch in 2022 or challenge U.S. Senator Marco Rubio. Those options are now in doubt.

The former Tallahassee mayor and married father of three said last Sunday he would seek treatment for alcohol addiction and he asked for privacy for him and his family. Gillum, who police said was too intoxicated to speak to first responders, denied ever using methamphetamine.

This has been a wake-up call for me,” Gillum said. “I am committed to doing the personal work to heal fully and show up in the world as a more complete person.”

That announcement came in a carefully crafted statement — sent by a national public relations firm hours after his top advisers and closest allies huddled on a conference call — in which Gillum, a CNN contributor, also said he would step away from “all public facing roles for the foreseeable future.”

Perhaps someday the political world will look back on those words as Gillum’s first steps in laying the groundwork for a return to elected politics. As several Insiders noted, Gillum would be far from the first to attempt a comeback after a fall from grace.

America loves a good redemption story and so when he completes rehab and comes back to public life after a year or two he will be able to run again should he choose to do so,” one independent said.

A Democrat said the many Floridians energized and captivated by Gillum since 2018 will forgive him because he “understands what it is to not have basic needs. His passion comes from a deep place, and I believe with the right healing, he will come out stronger than who he was before.”

Some Insiders offered political advice to Gillum, from “go away” to "come clean about what really happened."

"People will forgive almost anything except dishonesty,” a Democrat said. Another said Gillum may not come back as a candidate, “but Andrew Gillum has a future in Florida politics.” Gillum has spent the year and a half since the 2018 election trying to register voters and help Democrats win state House seats.

One Democrat said any discussion of Gillum’s future was “inappropriate" at this time.

“Addiction is a medical issue. Period. Full stop,” he said. “Let’s all use this time to simply to support him and his family, just as if he had a heart attack or cancer. And let the political chips fall where they may.”

Many Insiders echoed those concerns for Gillum and expressed hope he can emerge from this healed.

“You don’t have to agree with Gillum’s ideology or like him or trust him to see that this is a person who needs help," one Republican wrote. "He is too talented politically for anyone to rule out his future in politics, but clearly he has a lot of work to do on himself.”

Cops Deny Leaking Andrew Gillum Photos And Review How Candace Owens Got ‘Shared’ Police Report

Police in Florida said an investigation has begun over leaked photos and an official report associated with a suspected drug incident in a hotel involving Andrew Gillum were published online. The explicit photos were leaked on social media late Friday night and showed a man who resembles the former Tallahassee mayor in a compromising position purportedly in a swank Miami Beach hotel on March 13. British tabloid the Daily Mail also published photos it said were from inside the hotel room that claimed to show prescription drugs in addition to a powdery white substance that was allegedly crystal meth.

In addition, in the hours after the news first broke on the morning of March 13, Candace Owens — the conservative Black pundit who has openly mocked the “mass hysteria” over the coronavirus and once spoke of Adolf Hitler in sympathetic terms — posted a copy of the police report to her social media accounts.

The Miami Beach Police Department (MBPD) told the Tallahassee Democrat in an article published Sunday afternoon that it was “unknown how the report was shared” and confirmed that how Owens got it was “being looked at.” The department spokesperson also doubted the Daily Mail got the photos it published through a Freedom of information Act request, as it reported.

“I am the sole spokesperson for the MBPD,” Ernesto Rodriguez wrote to the Democrat in an email. “I can assure you no PRRs have been fulfilled besides the incident report,” he added while using the abbreviation law enforcement uses for the terms “Photo Request Response” and/or “Public Records Request.” Rodriguez said he would fulfill those requests by everyone who made them “at the same time” once “they are complete.”

Owens’ involvement along with other aspects of Gillum’s hotel incident sparked suspicions of some type of political setup. While that was not confirmed, Owens’ likely anti-Black Democrat agenda was on display for all to see when she tweeted a photo of Travis Dyson, one of two other men in the hotel from with Gillum. Owens claimed Dyson is “an openly gay man” with whom Gillum was having “a drug/sex party.” That tweet came more than two hours after Owens tweeted a copy of the police report.

It was unclear what kind of penalty, if any, Owens could face for posting a copy of the report that police suggested may have been obtained illicitly.

After the news broke, Gillum, a 40-year-old married father of three, released a brief statement apologizing. He said he was in Miami “for a wedding celebration when first responders were called to assist one of my friends.” Dyson, who was treated for a drug overdose, was later contacted by a reporter and denied knowing anything about a wedding. Dyson said he and Gillum have “been friends for a while” and that he “personally was not celebrating a wedding.”

Initial reports indicated methamphetamines were involved, prompting Gillum to first deny he’s ever used the drug before he voluntarily entered rehab on Monday for what he described as “alcohol abuse” and “depression” that he said followed his campaign to be governor. The admission was entirely out of character for a rising star within the Democratic Party who up until the incident had consistently presented himself as the consummate family man.

The police report claimed that the Miami Beach Police Department was called to the Mondrian Hotel at 1100 West Avenue just before 1 a.m. March 13 pertaining to a suspected drug overdose. Gillum, Dyson and a third man, Aldo Mejias, were inside of the hotel room when the Miami Beach Fire-Rescue arrived to treat a possible overdose Dyson.

Mejias told officers that he gave Dyson his credit card information on March 12 to book a hotel room for that evening. The men were supposed to reconvene later. Mejias reportedly told officers that when he arrived at the hotel room around 11 p.m., Dyson opened the door, collapsed on the bed and began vomiting. Mejias said he gave Dyson CPR and called the paramedics. He also said that while giving Dyson CPR, Gillum was in the bathroom, vomiting, according to the report.

Officers reportedly attempted to speak with Gillum but were unable to “due to his inebriated state.” Miami Beach Fire-Rescue said it returned to the hotel a second time to do a “welfare check” on Gillum, who authorities said by that time was stable and had normal vitals.

According to the police report, officers found three small baggies of “suspected crystal meth,” which were located on the bed and floor in the hotel room. The suspected drugs were taken as evidence.

However, there were no criminal charges for any of the men involved and officers said that Gillum left the Mondrian Hotel room “without incident” and returned to his home. Rodriguez, the MBPD spokesperson, told the Democrat no one was arrested because officers “responded to a medical call. The narcotics, although in plain view, were not in physical possession of anyone inside the room. The officers chose to impound the narcotics.”

Gillum, who was previously reported to be on a shortlist of potential Democratic vice presidential running mates, said he “will be stepping down from all public facing roles for the foreseeable future.” The CNN analyst had at one point even met with former President Barack Obama amid speculation about his own possible 2020 presidential campaign.

Prior to the incident in the hotel, Gillum had also been working as the chairman of Forward Florida Action, a political group that describes its objective as “registering and reengaging voters who are often unseen and unheard, electing more leaders that share our values to local office, and making the state legislature more diverse.”

Mayor Gillum, for the sake of your health -- and the well-being of our community -- we pen this letter from the hearts of Black men who are actively working to dispel the myths of what Black liberation, particularly for men, can be. Each of the undersigned individuals work tirelessly to redesign our surroundings so that Black men can feel wholly welcomed in various spaces, including educational spaces, political arenas, religious and spiritual temples, neighborhoods, and many other spaces occupied by Black men of any background. We do not represent any particular organization or institution. Instead, we represent Black liberation, a freedom seldomly experienced by Black men, and refuse to allow any system to swallow you whole.

Your life is precious. You have shown us the dedication and perseverance it takes to successfully lead a city, while simultaneously vying for higher political offices and taking care of a beautiful family that carries your last name. They carry your legacy and we need you here, whole and healthy, for their sake. You are not and will not be doing this alone. You have a community that supports you, no matter what. Lean on us. Call on us as your backbone and we will do everything within our power to uplift you, move you forward, or just sit and exist in the moment. This won't just rest with you alone.

Fellow Black men, allow this letter to be a reminder that we, too, must be allowed the space to explore, mess up, reevaluate ourselves and become anew. Unfortunately, the world often decides our fate based upon our trials, while white men are regularly afforded myriad opportunities and space to “fail." Failure often backed by a system that protects them and incentivizes this dangerous cycle. We have the power to change that.

The most important part to remember is that we are all on some pathway of exploration, self-exploration, and self-actualization, and we must hold each other with grace and accountability. Accountability, based in love and community, is necessary as a mental health tool, a communal weapon and armor, to remain sane in a world that daily targets us.

We must check on each other. We must support each other. We must love each other. However, in order to do so, we must become comfortable with the uncomfortable. We must share our individual and collective fears and vulnerabilities, so that day-by-day, and truth-by-truth, we might become stronger together. Beyond freeing ourselves, we have the opportunity to demonstrate to the children that come next, the liberatory power of expressing yourself emotionally, wholly, so that they too can grow and lead beside you. The intersectional practices of love, support, and community are always, already consensual; we can only be loved and supported -- communally -- as much as we allow.

The nation is rife with political battles, ongoing military disputes, and the mounting effects of a public health pandemic -- yet here we are. We are here holding you and your family in love and light; because even as the world tumbles, as a mother of freedom once said, “we must love and protect one another.” We are simultaneously willing to support you in whatever journey you determine is best for you. We will also support R. Jai Howard in whatever she determines is best for herself.

While we acknowledge that what is happening to Andrew Gillum in the media is exhausting, it is not unprecedented in how it treats Black men with less popularity and fewer resources. We should not be shocked that you, the media, would fetishize a Black life for clickbait, likes, and shares -- for anything. Black life, in moments of pain and terror, has long been delectable to the American palette. Since the inception of this country, Black men have been devalued, disposed of life and rights, and strictly scrutinized with the highest levels of disdain. This is how the system was designed, but we have long been breakers of chains, lanes and algorithms. We know pain, death and survival and in this moment, we dare to thrive anew. We will endure this alongside our Brother and welcome him to our project of planning and birthing a world where Black life and joy are integral, in all its manifestations.

We understand that the media has a responsibility to share the latest news with the communities that they serve; however, it must not do so in such a salacious way and the terrorizing of Black life must not be the primary entrée. Sharing photos of Mayor Gillum’s naked body, especially in such a vulnerable state, is inexcusable and triggering to a community that has seen our own bodies fetishized and/or slain across the nation, from the lynching tree to Main Street. Quite frankly, we are sick of seeing Black bodies become a call-to-fame and the subject of your headlines. Our bodies belong to us and only we can decide what happens to our bodies. We choose not to display their pain across the nation.

We invite you to share more positive, holistic news stories and outlets as your headlines. We want to see Black men smiling, loving whomever they choose to love, taking care of their family, helping lead the community in change efforts -- anything besides rote pornography of pain and suffering.

This is a charge for you to do something different -- to do something that does not hurt us for once.
