I hope they're telling the truth, because that would give me hope that all this shit we're doing might actually help stop its spread.
Then again, we're talking about China, so everything must be taken with a grain of rice.

Agreed OP.

I never believed the Chinese numbers once I saw how other governments started to react to virus once it escaped China. The Chinese Communist government has been notorious liars since their ascendancy, lying about the murder and starvation of tens of millions. You think we should believe them now? Also, if you've worked for Asians, you understand how they must always save face, they also can never say no or be direct, which is infuriating and frustrating for a westerner.

They’re lying.

Of course those numbers are bullshit and we might never know the real ones unless some brave, rogue individual in China risks life by providing them to the outside world.

Just like AIDS did.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | March 21, 2020 1:23 AM |
I still think it was made in China. Whether it was being used for a purpose or if it was just an accident I think it was man made. If true wouldn't they have known how to counteract it? I wondered if they had come up with something to stop it but can't share it because then everyone would know that they had created it. I think they knew immediately what had been released which was why they shut everything down. This is only my theory

Up to the minute information by country about Wuflu infections, deaths and recoveries. China today (21 Mar) reported 36 new cases of Wuflu and 6 deaths. Spain today reported 61 new cases.
Information rather than having an ignorant rant. Unless of course that is the purpose of this thread and its posters.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | March 21, 2020 8:06 AM |
You are talking shit r20 and people like you really need to shut the fuck up right now. The virus is not man-made, it's a transfer from an animal to a human that happened in China, but it's not some lab-made conspiracy.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | March 21, 2020 12:12 PM |
What r14 said. This virus can be contained. Other countries have reported the same thing.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | March 21, 2020 12:20 PM |
R25, they've run tons of tests in Italy. What they've discovered is that Patient Zero is most likely a man who travelled from Munich and who had been infected in that city by a Chinese woman from Shanghai. I think I've read somewhere else, not at the link, that the infected person from Munich may have been infected not directly from the Chinese woman but from someone else she had infected.
This was around 19-22 January, when no one in Europe was thinking much at all about this virus coming over here or knew much about it. The person from Munich was asymptomatic when he travelled to northern Italy so he could have infected 100s of people before starting to feel ill.
With Italy, I think it's just bad luck that they got hit so hard, althouh there are several plausible reasons why they did. Aside from the general elderly population, the places that were really struck were these little towns that have even older populations. There are also more intergenerational households in Italy, so healthier younger people who might only have had mild symptoms could have passed it on to their grandparents without knowing.
Bavaria, the region where Munich is located, is the hardest hit in Germany. Germany took a slightly different strategy of isolating people with symptoms from early on and also has the second-highest number of ventilators in the world so they have probably been able to flatten the curve more easily but from what I've read German virologists believe that their numbers will also pick up and eventually converge with those of other countries.

by Anonymous | reply 32 | March 21, 2020 4:33 PM |
What's interesting is that the first place in Europe affected by the Black Death was also northern Italy (Genoa). In the 14th century northern Italy was a major center of trade. The disease is thought to have entered via a vessel coming from Caffa in the Crimea. The black death jumped from animals to humans. It's extremely common. There's no need for a sinister government laboratory to explain the origins of the coronavirus. In fact, those explanations are a leading sign of conspiratorial thinking (e.g. retardation).
by Anonymous | reply 33 | March 21, 2020 5:51 PM |
I hope their numbers are right because it would be something optimistic. That we and other countries could figure this out too.
But I don't believe them. They were already declaring victory 2 weeks ago, and now have immediately rushed to offering advice and supplies and claiming their model is the best. This virus did great damage to their international reputation and I have no doubt they'd lie about everything to try and change that.

you should check Reddit and Twitter, there are a few Americans still living in Wuhan, according to their latest updates, they are allowed to go out now, so I believe it's indeed getting better in Wuhan or China.

I've actually been noticing that the Chinese numbers have been going up slightly. A week or so ago their daily new cases bottomed out at 11; the last few days it's been in the 30s (39 reported today). In one article I read the Chinese government asserted that all new cases now were of people traveling into China who'd been infected elsewhere; not sure whether I believe that.

You'd be an idiot to believe anything China says in regards to the virus at this point, considering they spent the first few months of the outbreak completely denying the existence of the virus and silencing those who were trying to warn the world. They lied about the status of the virus before to preserve their country's "integrity", why would they be telling the truth now that the whole world knows about it?
China and Russia and all other totalitarian countries run under oppressive regimes should never be trusted. Assume everything they tell you lacks truth and you'll never be caught with your pants down.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | March 23, 2020 6:27 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 59 | March 23, 2020 6:33 AM |
Like, while they were secretive in the beginning and that is to be condemned, we all get that this virus isn't China's 'fault', right? New viruses have been jumping the species barrier from animal to human throughout recorded history. More importantly, without the swift- some might say ruthless - shutdown of Wuhan and the sacrifice of the first responding Chinese nurses and doctors, many of whom gave their lives to try and slow and control this thing, it would have gotten out to hit the West even earlier.
They gave us time to prepare and it's not their fault most of us squandered it.

I agree. The problem is people are not getting that China can easily lockdown millions of people And I mean LOCK THEM DOWN.
These people are not allowed out. It's not like her in the USA. Even Gov Fatso of Illinois admitted, they are unlikely to arrest anyone because all you can do is put them in prison and that defeats the whole purpose.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | March 23, 2020 8:40 AM |
It will be interesting to see how far democratic countries, including the United States, go. My guess is quite far. Keep an eye on France and Spain which are both staring into the abyss at this point.
They are fining or arresting anyone who leaves their homes without good reason. Looks like it is having an impact. It remains to be seen whether it can halt the increase in the number of cases.

YouTube is overrun with conspiracy theory-fueled content and requires more than a grain of salt before consuming, but there are a number of videos on there about COVID-19 patients in China being removed from hospitals and shunted off to bare-bones facilities outside of city limits so the city can report zero cases. The unfortunate victims are pretty much left to die in warehouses.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | March 23, 2020 10:09 AM |
I'm currently under government-mandated house arrest. I can be fined or imprisoned if I am outside my home engaged in a non-government approved activity. So I took a walk about 2 km from where I live to see what would happen. And nothing did. No cops. No patrols. Nada. People walking around, engaged in every day activities. Traffic in the street. People hanging out at outdoor fast food and coffee shops.
Unless governments are going to call out the police and army to patrol the streets 24/7 and shoot on sight anyone outside their home, government-mandated house arrest will ultimately fail.

R68> I believe it
by Anonymous | reply 71 | March 23, 2020 6:29 PM |
R60 It is China's fault. Of course they didn't create the disease themselves, but they actively lied about its existence, and then when that got out lied about the numbers of the infected, the symptoms, the contagiousness, and the lethality of it. They imprisoned (and probably killed) scientists for trying to warn the world. They lied about it until it spread to other countries and could be factually traced back to them.
The disease itself may not be their fault, but the pandemic sure as hell is. Everything that has come of COVID19 is their fault and can be traced back to their evil attempts to save their commie country's face.
It IS China's fault.

by Anonymous | reply 75 | March 23, 2020 8:03 PM |
Of course it's China's fault. If rednecks kept starting outbreaks due to their insatiable lust for squirrel meat nobody would be saying they couldn't be blamed. At best it's depraved negligence. China always knows where the viruses start, the exact same place the outbreak started last time. Exactly why are you defending a country that puts Muslims in concentration camps and brutalizes gays?
by Anonymous | reply 76 | March 23, 2020 8:35 PM |
R72: could China have been more open and truthful sooner? Of course. But our governments knew the fundamentals back in January. Singapore, Taiwan and South Korea prepared in time. We did not, despite having longer to do so. A belief it couldn't happen here? That failure is on us.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | March 23, 2020 10:49 PM |
Back in January the WHO was saying chinese flu couldn't pass from human to human. Come Baizuo White Saviour protect the CCP from taking responsibility for their own actions they can't help spawning disease after disease. And look up the meaning of Baizuo to see what the people you're White knighting for think about you.
by Anonymous | reply 78 | March 23, 2020 11:03 PM |
R77 We DIDN'T know the fundamentals, because China was lying about what the "fundamentals" even were. They said that it couldn't be transferred by human contact, they lied about symptoms, they lied about the fact that it was a virus. No country had enough time to prepare, Singapore and Taiwan and South Korea were all just as blindsided by us due to the lack of information. The only difference is that they handled the aftermath of being exposed to the disease better because they aren't stuck with an idiotic government and a leader who is more concerned with his hotel profits than those who are sick and dying.
Nobody had any time to prepare because nobody knew the real scope or details of the virus. China lied about what the virus was and what it could really do pretty much up until people in Italy were dropping like flies.

Mate R78 I used to live in China, I think I have a reasonable handle on how they interact with Westerners, and yes i am aware that there are certain lines which white people will never cross. That said,it was pretty common to find other white people in China who unreflectively saw the Chinese as robots, soldier ants, or 'inscrutable orientals'. Adopting these attitudes does not demonstrate a great degree of acumen, nor does it provide much in the way of genuine insight. Put bluntly, the Chinese don't need saving.

A culture that hosts wet markets the perfect breeding ground for viruses to mutate - this only being the latest of those viruses - because they enjoy the taste of tortured exotic meat. And they're aware of this too yes they do have microscopes in China despite you behaving as if they're children - scientists who were gagged and ordered to destroy virus samples.
And while you want to to talk about hiv there are theories it was caused by eating apes - in which case ANOTHER time our species was punished because of us putting something in our mouths that didn't belong there. It's fantastic to me that the same species that built the Hadron Collider can bask in something as evil as blowtorching live dogs for the meat they produce. China will breed disease and disease and disease all the while enabled by Baizuo feckless wonders such as yourself.
