Many gay Latino men of a certain age (Gen Xers) think of her that way—the “queen.” She was absolutely worshipped by gay men in the 80s and 90s, and beginning with La Isla Bonita, she embraced/appealed to Latin culture in a way that pop stars before her did not. So that’s a double whammy, being embraced as a gay man during AIDS and embraced as a Latino gay man. It’s understandable to me. Being gay during that era was really hard and I can only imagine how much harder being Hispanic and gay in the US might have been.

One of my first gay friends was a Latino guy who worshipped Madonna and he knew her career and life and musical catalog the way I know Tori Amos’s. I am coming across like a big fan. I grew up with Madonna’s music and I like a whole lot of her music. I genuinely like a lot of it a lot. I always disliked her bratty and oftentimes disrespectful personality/persona. This Ray of Light/Evita period was a real reprieve from that. And she did have my respect then. Unfortunately, it just all went to shit after that.

She did her children’s book author thing and that was fine. She did Confessions, and that was good music, but it’s also when she put on the unitard and decided she was going to be Nympho Grandma, and she never recovered. She did stunt music—the duet with Justin Timberlake, which was well received, and then the cheerleader one with Nicki Minaj that was just bad.

Poor Madonna. She could have just retreated like Garbo—or like Kate Bush—and she always would have been revered within the music industry.

I think she would do well for herself (if she’s not actually a drug addict or being treated with steroids for a serious medical condition, which her videos suggest both are possible) to work with The Weeknd’s producers.

Some of the songs on his new album are very good and they sound very mid-late 80s/early 90s. The music easily could be Madonna music from that era. Her wisdom always has been to choose producers who do well by her. She could bookend her career with music that sounds a lot like her early music.

I think certain gay Latino men in the '80s-'90s worshipped Madge in no small part due to the whole Catholicism guilt thing. The fact that she turned that into a manufactured form of sexuality further endeared her to the whole HIV/ AIDS umbrella that many gay men lived under at that time. Madonna's stardom and popularity weren't altogether her own doing, she was as much a product of her time as anything else. The juxtaposition of Reaganism, acceptance of overt sexuality in pop culture, MTV dominance of image over musical substance, so on and so forth. But there's a reason her movie career never took off, even her best and most promoted role, Evita, didn't let us glimpse any hint of vulnerability. With Madonna one has always gotten the sense that she is playing the character of Madonna the superstar. Barbra Streisand who was one of my mother's favorites never let down her guard as a diva too. But the difference is that BS was able to let that go in her movie roles, particularly in her early star vehicles.

Now that Madge has no relevance whatsoever in the music and film industries, she's desperate for validation as a grand character in the pubic consciousness.
