Praise the lord. Finally a thread on male singers. I can’t stand women singers’ voices.
Have at it boys and girls!

John Newman, a throwback to Northern Soul.
He’s a contemporary of Sam Smith; I thought he would make it big, but apparently he didn’t, not really.

Andy Bell - Blue Savannah, Mon Amour, A Little Respect.
Just because he was part of a mostly tech dance act, he was deprived of his deserved props. Stop the erasure!

Duncan Sheik and his mediocre song was an underrated hot guy, and his song had my middle school self barely breathing.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | March 19, 2020 5:54 AM |
Duncan Sheik remains a really gifted songwriter. I don't think "Barely Breathing" is at all mediocre--it's great, lyrically inventive 90s pop.
He mostly works in music theatre now: "Spring Awakening" and other scores.

R8, good to know he's had a nice career. I still love the song. [bold]I[/bold] tend to have middling taste in music, so I tend to think that any pop song I like is probably 'mediocre.' I'll check out his other stuff.
I probably spent the better first half of my 13th year watching VH1 and wondering what Duncan Sheik's cock and hairy asscrack looked like...

I was a big fan of neo-soul revival of the late 90s to the early 2000s. I felt that so many extremely talented artists (male and female) never got mainstream success. There was this white Canadian singer called Remy Shand that I felt was like the second coming of Al Green.

Staying with blue-eyed soul. Connor Reeves from the UK.

Another gem from Connor Reeves. Beautiful song.

Is Mr Hudson a gay?
by Anonymous | reply 14 | March 19, 2020 7:10 AM |
Jamie Cullem singing Sondheim. Well, obviously the ‘underrated’ one is the former, not the latter.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | March 19, 2020 7:15 AM |
R12: I’m afraid it’s a case of More English than Gay.

Teddy Thompson owns this thread. He is the son of Richard and Linda Thompson and grew up with the Wainwright and McGonnigle kids. Teddy sang on Rufus Wainwright's first couple albums and released his first solo LP in 2001. He's got a beautiful voice. And he's a fantastic songwriter.

I always loved Roland Gift's voice - very unique.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | March 20, 2020 1:13 AM |
Yes, I love Roland Gift's voice (Funny How Love Is).

Noel Gallagher can’t be considered ‘underrated ‘, I don’t think, but I’m not sure how popular his side project High Flying Birds are.
Well, here’s one of their newer numbers:

Sincere question: many gay men are devoted, devout followers of female vocalists of one kind or another. I won't even list examples.
Do (some) gay men have difficulty enjoying male vocalists? I was told this once by a rock fan who only liked the ladies (Chrissy Hynde, Blondie, Joan Jett, Heart, etc.) but dismissed most bands of the same era because they're fronted by men. I really prefer the male voice, so I guess I'm an outlier.
Thoughts?

I just like good music, don't care if singer is male or female.

Ryan Tedder is a really good singer and songwriter. This song should have been a bigger hit.

Paul Carrack wins most underrated. He sang big hits with Ace, Squeeze and Mike and the Mechanics. Has had a long career and still sounds great.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | March 22, 2020 10:28 PM |
The song is definitely more celebrated than the singer/group:
by Anonymous | reply 36 | March 24, 2020 7:07 PM |
Paul Carrack...singing anything.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | March 24, 2020 7:18 PM |
Baby's Got Blue Eyes -- Paul Carrack. I melt.

R3: Way before his health problems, John Newman had two problems, even if Love me again was not huge in the USA was huge in europe, but nothing he released after that had that impact, then he had a couple of not so great live performances and the Sam Smith appeared.
Anyway, he is the type of singer that can make a come back at anytime, he only needs the right hit
by Anonymous | reply 40 | March 24, 2020 7:44 PM |
Midge Ure. This was a huge hit in my country but only became a hit because it was the song of a watch commercial

Morten Harket (of a-ha) could sing a chinese menu and I'd buy everything from it.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | March 24, 2020 8:02 PM |
Teddy Thompson's voice (and handsome ginger face) make my knees weak.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | March 24, 2020 8:10 PM |
One of the most underrated rock vocalists is Robin Zander. His voice is just so beautiful and powerful.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | March 24, 2020 8:37 PM |
Sam Tsui: 3.2 million YouTube subscribers (yes, he's gay).
by Anonymous | reply 47 | March 24, 2020 9:26 PM |
R43 Thanks for posting this. I’d forgotten how wonderful his voice is. Those luscious tones in the upper and lower registers are exquisite.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | March 25, 2020 3:12 AM |
Thanks, r48. This is another of my favorite a-ha songs, with a killer performance by Morten. "Summer Moved On," from 2000's Minor Earth Major Sky. Lovely melancholic video too.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | March 25, 2020 1:03 PM |
And one that really showcases Moretn's lower register. It's like buttah.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | March 25, 2020 1:14 PM |
R49 Wow, dude can hold a note!
by Anonymous | reply 51 | March 26, 2020 3:26 AM |
I agree completely that Teddy Thompson is highly underrated.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | April 25, 2020 7:02 PM |
AND he's hot.

R26, you can tell how schizoid Ben Taylor is at having James Taylor and Carly Simon for parents. No wonder he acts the way he does.
