What do we know about this latest confection?
Belgravia, the new production from DL fave her heininess Julian Alexander Kitchener-Fellowes, Baron Fellowes of West Stafford DL

Is that some kind of DA spinoff? Isn't Belgravia where all those titled families had their London homes?
by Anonymous | reply 1 | March 15, 2020 10:56 PM |
It is not a DA spinoff. Belgravia was where the Bellamys of Upstairs Downstairs lived.

Rich Brit people problems.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | March 15, 2020 11:05 PM |
It's based on Fellowes' own novel and set a century before Downton Abbey.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | March 15, 2020 11:06 PM |
It starts with the Duchess of Richmond's ball in Brussels. It was all previously done with great aplomb in the 70s movie Waterloo with Christopher Plummer and the incomparable Rod Steiger. Orson Welles also starred. Why anyone other than Fellowes should need this new production is unclear.

[quote] On 18 January 2020, it was announced that the series will premiere on 12 April 2020 on Epix in the U.S.
Well, screw them. I would probably have watched it if it had been on a normal channel.

My favorite neighborhood of London. I find it odd how rarely you hear the name mentioned when people talk about nice areas of London. Much nicer than Notting Hill.

Just saw the first part tonight and it was really good, though I'd watch Dame Harriet Walter recite the phone book.
Up to now it's a largely female led drama, the men are supporting actors.

Nigel Allen did a little short about some dude who kisses another dude who flips out.

Upstairs/Downstairs was set at 165 Eaton Place, Belgravia.
Oscar Wilde fans of course know that in Importance of Being Earnest , Jack Worthing's ward, Miss Cardew is the grand-daughter of the late Mr. Thomas Cardew of 149 Belgrave Square, S.W.; Gervase Park, Dorking, Surrey; and the Sporran, Fifeshire, N.B.
Belgrave Square like good portion of Belgravia sort of fell out of fashion post WWII, with many of the large houses giving over to embassies. This is slowly changing back as people have been converting properties back into single family homes (mostly the super rich Arabs and Russians), but don't believe area will largely ever revert to all private homes again.

Just watched the first two episodes and it's quite sordid. Love how quickly Anne (Anne Trenchard) and Caroline (Harriet Walter) turned into adversaries. And Anne's husband (Philip Glenister) is a piece of work.

I'm streaming this on putlockers.pro and really enjoying it. It really has affirmed my decision to never have any cleaning help inside my house. Servants are treacherous and duplicitous, who knew! The only thing, I can't help seeing Harry from The Windsors in Oliver Trenchard; same actor.

I so wanted to bone Lady Prudence Fairfax.

The Pope character is quite dashing. No wonder the women fall head over heals for him making the men green with envy.
I haven't read the source material, but I do wonder if Oliver turns out to be a homosexual or is just a boorish snob most happy living in the countryside?
God, some members of the Trenchard staff are such greedy, disloyal shits.
And stealing your mom's last valuable possessions? Wow.
This is so not feel-good Downton Abbey.

Oh dear. Head over heels, of course.

Where does one watch this in the US?

This is the Belgravia story I want to see dramatized,

Has anyone ever been to the Plumbers Arms in Belgravia?
by Anonymous | reply 19 | April 9, 2020 12:08 PM |
The actor who plays John Bellasis, Adam James, reminds me a lot of James Hewitt.

SPOILER
Holy shit, Pope isn't a bastard. He's totally legit! The soldier, who married his parents, was also a legit priest! That's some period drama soap twist!

I'm watching it. I'm enjoying it so far.

Will there be a Second Series?
by Anonymous | reply 25 | April 24, 2020 5:00 PM |
I love it so much! Epix has a 30-day free trial and 5.99 after on Amazon. I watched the first two episodes during a free Epix trial and figure I'll watch the last 4 during my free trial on Amazon. I have more of a downstairs budget these days. One does what one can.

R25 It rated pretty well in the UK and there are enough loose ends, especially if you kill off The Earl of Brockenhurst in the first episode of a second series.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | April 24, 2020 5:46 PM |
I thought they tied everything up pretty neat. The scoundrel is on the run having lost any chance of a privileged life he thought he would have. The couple everybody was rooting for got married and is on their way to India. The secret of Pope's lineage is out and everybody is happy including Oliver who gets to live in the countryside and taking care of a son he knows he didn't make.
Maybe it could be some sort of anthology series where the actors play different roles in the next season?

Gimme Hampstead NW3 for £5000, and, "What is Father's Day in Brixton?," as the Double Jeopardy answer to, "The definition of mass confusion?"
by Anonymous | reply 29 | April 30, 2020 5:39 PM |
It was dreadful. None of the charm of Gosford or Downton. Paint-by-numbers plot with no real surprises. Perhaps Fellowes needs Maggie Smith as a muse.

I liked it, though, the end was rushed & fell a bit flat, Tamsin Greig & Harriet Walter came off best.

It's the Lady Edith of the genre....

When Bridgerton debuts, it will star Dame Julie Andrews and Jonathan Bailey. We'll see which costume drama can sustain an audience.
