WHEN WILL THE TEARS END?????

She's probably been exposed and is going into quarantine for that reason. This announcement is just to obscure the truth.

The Queen is a tough old broad. I expect she'll be fine.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | March 14, 2020 11:38 PM |
The story is a bit alarmist. She usually leaves BP Thursdays after lunch and goes to Windsor for the weekend. She also stays at length around Easter.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | March 14, 2020 11:39 PM |
HMQEII is in her 90s. She should have minimized contact with people weeks ago, and everyone with sense will wish her a pleasant self-quarantine.
This is actually a bit harder on Charles, whose job it is to pick up the slack. But he's seventy years old and not in the best of health, but doesn't want to admit it. He's sensibly cancelled public engagements, but he'll probably try to look fearless and in charge when he should be protecting himself, and put himself at more risk than he ought.

Thanks for that mental picture, R14
by Anonymous | reply 20 | March 14, 2020 11:53 PM |
The Queen goes to Windsor every Thursday afternoon and comes back to Buckingham Palace on Tuesday - Always has.
The only exceptions are Easter, Ascot week, her 10 week summer holiday at Balmoral and her 7 week Christmas holiday at Sandringham, when she doesn't go to the Palace at all.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | March 14, 2020 11:54 PM |
R19... I'd guess because BP is head office... more people in and out. Also, it's a bit of a building site right now as it's basically falling down. I suppose if A comes for a meeting with B, who later passes C, D and E in the corridors... spread and a 94 year old Queen. There's still loads of people at Windsor, but less than BP.

[quote] She has smoker’s lines around her mouth.
She doesn't have smoker's lines because it is well known that the Queen doesn't smoke. After watching most of her family's health problems associated with smoking, especially her father, she never took up the habit. It was always remarked upon because it was unusual for a person of her age and social group.

It makes sense to move them to the country. At Windsor or Sandringham not only can she and Phillip be isolated but so can their staff, to stop the chance of infection. Buckingham Palace is in the middle of the city and it is therefore much harder to isolate.

The book about Andre Tallon claimed she was a smoker, but I know many said that (among other things) was not true.

She smokes! Look at the lines around her mouth.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | March 15, 2020 3:42 PM |
I cannot believe she is almost 94, does all she does, and smokes. Given the family history with smoking - Queen Mary, lung cancer; George VI, lung cancer; Duke of Windsor, throat cancer; Edward VII and George V both suffered from smoking if it didn't kill them, which is probably did. Anyway, smoking and the Windsors don't equal dying in bed of old age, so it seems highly unlikely to me the Queen or the Queen Mother do/did.

It's the way the British constitution works. riti

R81, while it is true she has had a comfortable life funded by the taxpayers, she has also played the constitutional role she was assigned (i.e., did not ask for) for over sixty years. A few days after the London bombing some years ago, I saw the Queen and Prince Philip riding up the Mall (the street leading to Buckingham Palace) ever so slowly in a parade honoring an anniversary of the end of World War II, standing so that their bodies were completely exposed should anyone want to take a shot. The nation was fearful from a terrorist attack, but they showed did their job with courage. As an American, I have never seen our Heads of State ever take such risk.

Out of idle curiosity, I googled "Queen Mother smoking" to see whether the old bad ever smoked in public. All that came up were pictures of Princess Margaret with a cig in her hand, making her fabulous couture smell like death and ashes.
Princess Margaret died of a stroke, and yes, smoking is known it greatly increase a person's risk for having strokes.

She is HM. There is no R.
Verbal Address
Use ‘Your Majesty’ for the first time and subsequently ‘Ma’am’. This should always rhyme with ‘lamb’. Pronunciation to rhyme with ‘palm’ has not been correct for some generations.
In conversation, refer to ‘Her Majesty’ or ‘The Queen’, as appropriate. ‘Your Majesty’ should be substituted for ‘you’. References to other members of the Royal Family are made to ‘His (or Her) Royal Highness’ or the appropriate title, such as the Duke of Edinburgh or the Princess Royal.
On Being Presented to The Queen
Introductions to the Royal Family are known as presentations. When presenting another person to The Queen it is only necessary to state the name of the person to be presented: ‘Your Majesty, may I present Mr John Smith?’.

There was an episode of The Crown that dealt with Jackie Kennedy not calling her Your Majesty, for the very reason that she was not one of her subjects.
But then someone reported to the Queen something snarky Jackie had said about her, and Jackie was mortified. She came back to London just to apologize to her, and then she called her "your Majesty," which, of course, Liz found amusing but endearing.

It's a revolving door of American First Ladies over the years.; and regardless of what she may think privately of any one of them for better or worse, Her Majesty treats them all respectfully and graciously; she is obliged by her Parliament to do so.

The BRF have been around enough to when they are being respected or disrepected. They have long since given up on tiny violations of protocol to people who probably don't know the details. The most recent famous case was when Michelle Obama put her arm around HM's back and instead of having Michelle beheaded, HM responded in kind.

In all seriousness, the Brits would be devastated if something happened to her; Boris seems to be trying to outdo Dump in the incompetence department so QEII getting the virus would push them over the edge. She needs to stay well & create video taped messages to tell everyone to keep calm & carry on - not expose herself to unnecessary risk.

Seriously, has the queen addressed the nation about the pandemic?
She really should, she should tell them to shelter in place and keep their spirits up and be decent about it all, and that this too shall pass. She's the one public figure who could say things like that without being ridiculous.
by Anonymous | reply 149 | March 18, 2020 9:08 PM |
Sorry but she is an avoidant coward-- look at how she dealt with Diana's death, the Sparkle debacle, etc. She will not address the pandemic any time soon.

R149 That's easy to say to a nation of mostly poor people, when your entire existence has been partially funded by taxpayers and you live in the very literal sense of the lap of luxury, while the rest of the country have their entire lives upended by a virus, with very little protection from the government.

They should turn Sandringham into a sanatorium for coronavirus patients. Didn't many grand houses get turned into hospitals/rehabs/residences for military in WWII?
by Anonymous | reply 152 | March 18, 2020 10:23 PM |
The Queen Mother's childhood home was used as a place for wounded soldiers to convalesce in WWI. Elizabeth Bowes-Lyons nursed them even though she was only a teenager at the time. It would be a nice gesture for the royal family to open up some of their palaces and castles to patients and ease the burden on the NHS.

Yes and also in WWI. Highclere Castle, the palatial estate pictured in Downton Abby did this. Also the Russian royals with some of their estates during the revolution and the young Duchesses served as nurses.

We have a lot of buildings more suitable for conversion into temporary hospitals, using crumbling old mansions miles from anywhere doesn't make sense when we have hundreds of unused concert venues.

She most certainly will when she is instructed to do so by her government.
One More Time: The Queen does not rule, she reigns.
Per Merrian Webster Dictionary:
Reign:
: to hold office as chief of state although possessing little governing power
// in England the sovereign reigns but does not rule

by Anonymous | reply 158 | March 19, 2020 12:08 AM |
R155, old mansions and castles should be converted to temporary hospitals before concert venues. the old houses have bedrooms and plumbing and are easier to fit for human habitation, while all you can do with a concert hall is pull out the seats and put in cots more than six feet of each other for miserable emergency treatment.
Of course there's a chance that concert halls full of cots will actually be needed, but they should start with places designed for human habitation.

Jackie Kennedy is a bigger icon then the "Queen" could ever hope to be. It's like Marilyn Monroe, she's been dead for nearly 60 years, and people still cannot keep her name out of their mouth.
Whenever we get a new First Lady, the Jackie Kennedy comparisons always start up. That doesn't happen with the so called "Queen."
Jackie is a global icon who will be well remembered long after the "Queen" is gone. The Kennedy brand is much bigger anyway.

R171 I do not think so. Not a comment on Brexit. Entertains Trump. Goes along with Johnson on proroguing parliament. All quiet on the Andrew front. All without a comment on behalf of the people as a nation and under the guise of the monarchy’s supposed role. What role. The UK will break up because of the old biddy though she’ll probably croak right before and poor Charles will he left dealing with the fuckedupness. Yeap they are but a reality show of dodgy hollow pageantry now that you bring it up.

by Anonymous | reply 176 | March 19, 2020 7:04 AM |
No matter the citizenship, protocol is usually followed by initially addressing the Queen as "Your Majesty". The Queen is not an American citizen, yet she addresses presidents of the United States as "Mr. President". In public, even the Queen of Denmark and the Queen of the UK address each other as "Your Majesty". Privately, they are Lillibet and Daisy to each other.
American Presidents and First Ladies customarily greet Queens (and Kings) as "Your Majesty", but don't follow with the usual "Ma'am" or "Sir" as would citizens of countries with monarchies. The Reagans, the Bushes, and the Obamas greeted Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip as "Your Majesty" and "Your Royal Highness", and would address them as "Queen Elizabeth" and "Prince Philip" for the rest of their visit.
Only one head of state ever addressed the Queen as "Elizabeth" and that was Nelson Mandela, but she was "Your Majesty" at each first greeting by him and he always referred to her as "Her Majesty" when speaking to others.

Royals and their court have always fled London to another palace or country estate during times of plague, diseases, etc...
Back in the day it would have been smallpox, the sweating sickness, cholera, typhoid, plague, and so on.
if they didn't own an estate to stay outright, local noble was informed to prepare his home for a royal visit (along with court) who would stay at His (or Her) Majesty's pleasure.

Plus, having William step up and take a public role is the best thing for the institution of the monarchy. Because there's no way in hell Charles will ever be a popular king, the Palace's best bet to keep going is to make William look good.
Harry's made that a lot easier.
