he St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office said 38-year-old Volusia transient Joshua Christopher Noles led deputies on a wild chase before firing at them near Elkton.

A 38-year-old Volusia County man shot and killed Wednesday after leading deputies on a high-speed, sometimes wrong-way chase through Flagler and St. Johns counties has been identified as Joshua Christopher Noles.

A state-registered sexual offender, Noles had a lengthy criminal record with multiple stints in state prison, according to the Florida Department of Corrections.

Noles, whose address is listed as “transient” on the FDLE Sexual Offenders and Predators database, was a sexual offender after a May 16 conviction for possession of a photo of a child sexual performance in Volusia County.

A check of Volusia County jail records shows 14 arrests since 2004, the last September 2016 on charges of sexual battery, plus lewd and lascivious molestation on a child and 20 others for possession of images of a child sexual performance.

The chase began about 2:15 p.m. in Flagler County when deputies there began a pursuit of a Dodge Ram truck after a hit-and-run crash, St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Chuck Mulligan said. Noles’ pickup hit two cars as he fled up Florida A1A with Flagler deputies in pursuit.

St. Johns County deputies were alerted to him and spotted him at A1A and Florida 206, Mulligan said. The pursuit continued onto Florida 207 with Noles driving on the wrong side of the road. He went down dead-end roads and at one point crashed through a fence before ramming a patrol car. He soon crashed into an old parked school bus off 207.

Noles got out and began firing at deputies, Mulligan said. They fired back, and he was declared dead at the scene just south of Elkton.

The three St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office members involved were Cpls. Quentin Beckton and Andrew Huskey, and Deputy Tyler Quinney. This was the first deputy-involved shooting for any of them, Mulligan said.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, the Sheriff’s Office said.
