I am leaving now to go to Walmart in Tiftonia Tennessee. I’m hoping there isn’t many people there at this time of the morning.
I don’t like crowds and 2 AM to 3:30 AM is the only time I will go to Walmart.
Wish me luck

Walmart is opened 24 hours?
by Anonymous | reply 4 | March 12, 2020 5:46 AM |
The local Safeway was nearly out of liquid soap, Out of Clorox wipes, hand sanitizer, and hillshire farms luncheon meats.

I told you neanderthals to get a luxe bidet on Amazon for $30.
If that's too much, they have a used one for $24!

R3 here. Yes R4 Walmart is open 24 hrs a day. That is the best thing about Walmart.
I am stuck here for at least the next 7.5 hrs. I have a flat and the hole is so big the fix a flat poured out of it so I have to wait here until their tire center opens.
I am sure I will contract coronavirus before I get out of here!

The first time I felt the panic was in the Stop n Shop tonight about 8:30. To see the entire meat section gone, no paper towels or even napkins. Desperate people milling about with overflowing carts. Signs apologizing for the lack of cleaning supplies. Unbelievable.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | March 13, 2020 3:11 AM |
What cities are you all in?
I haven't stocked up on food (yet) but will try tomorrow. I barely keep any food, toiletries in bulk because I'm single in a studio. Just keep on hand my immediate needs.
I still can't believe any of this - (Minneapolis, here)
by Anonymous | reply 10 | March 13, 2020 3:37 AM |
I went by my local Trader Joe's, Stop and Shop and Rite Aid today.
No toilet paper anywhere. Period.
Shelves are getting pretty empty. Lots of frozen entrees and frozen entrees were gone. Beans and ramen that I wanted to stock up on were already pretty bare.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | March 13, 2020 3:43 AM |
I think there's a lot of panic buying and then the usual stock will be brought back in and to some degree sit there... I expect a balance will return to the stores in the next month.

Almost all of the frozen vegetables were gone where I went, which surprised me, since I didn't think people ate many vegetables. The one thing that was untouched was the gnocchi made from cauliflower.

I’m going to Costco tomorrow morning. Wish me luck.
Actually it may not be too bad, what with restaurant and deli owners not buying huge amounts of stuff.

I went to Walmart tonight but aborted my mission when I saw the lines. I may attempt again in the morning, but I have enough food for a couple of weeks. I hope the hysteria will die down a little by then
I was surprised to see that there was very little laundry detergent left on shelves.

Outside of those with space limitations, I’m also surprised how many seemed unprepared. I just returned from my routine Sunday “milk run” and the local grocer’s paper goods aisle was bare. I wasn’t too shocked as everyone lost their shit locally last Friday when schools closed and county limited large gatherings. The store said they are expecting more and shoppers are limited to 2 of each item. They had just received a shipment of disinfectants. I took one big bottle of bleach. Most people were decent, but of course there was one asshole who took half the box of wipes (ha - they were antibacterial only). Most food including produce was fine, and dry goods like beans and pasta were picked over but you could still get some. Same with frozen foods. Other than the wipe jerk most people were being very thoughtful....at least here, and for now.

by Anonymous | reply 35 | March 15, 2020 9:51 PM |
No eggs, no bread, no milk, no flour. I did score a freshly baked baguette of French bread.
The paper aisle looked like a vaccum attacked it. Nothing on the shelves. I went on Friday just to see it for myself.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | March 15, 2020 9:55 PM |
I went to Safeway this morning for my usual weekly run.
Out of the usual stuff - hand sanitizer, tp, hand soap, cleaning wipes. Good stock of paper towels which I guess could be used as a last resort.
Almost completely out of bread which made me a little nervous.
They did have plenty of frozen goods, meat, seafood, produce, milk, cheese, soup, snacks, etc. Nothing to panic about.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | March 15, 2020 10:29 PM |

I'm in Atlanta and I went to 2 stores today. They were were completely out of meat, the frozen tv dinners, milk and fruit were almost gone. The potatoes and pasta were gone, and there was barely any butter or items in the refrigerated biscuit case left. There was some weird garlic/parmesan butter (no margarine) and some chocolate chip rolls left
by Anonymous | reply 40 | March 16, 2020 1:15 AM |
It took me 4 stores, but I finally found some TP and paper towels. I also found some Method disinfecting wipes even though I don't think they will help against corona, at least I can wipe my counters down at home. I was told no hand sanitizer in stores for at least the rest of the month, unfortunately I need it for work. It looks like Clorox wipes won't be around for awhile either. I also bought hand soap, Tylenol, cough drops, and some bottled water.

I went to the market very early Saturday morning (before 7am) and it was packed and shelves were bare and the lines horrendously long. It's hard not to panic and want to hoard resources when you see that. I found myself buying things that I probably didn't need because when you see the empty shelves and anxiety on everyone's faces, it's difficult not to get rapt up in that. Food scarcity has me more stressed out than the actual virus does at this point.

In Australia, the supermarkets are introducing an hour dedicated to elderly customers only. Between 7-8am only elderly customers with Govt concession cards as proof will be allowed into the stores before the hordes raid everything and leave them nothing after 8am.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | March 16, 2020 5:29 AM |
r48, that's a great idea. The superstore I shop at the most has had relatively few customers 10pm-midnight, when I shop, so there are periods when it's quiet, but it would be nice to set aside time for the elderly and infirm.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | March 16, 2020 5:36 AM |
No butter, cheese, or orange juice today. The only meat left was stuff nobody wants like tripe and liver.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | March 16, 2020 5:39 AM |
I never buy fresh meat, so it's interesting to see what other people regard as necessities. Everything I eat at home is ready made and cooks in the microwave. I thought there would be a run on frozen entrees, but the store had plenty of them. I bought enough to last the two weeks.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | March 16, 2020 5:45 AM |

Went to the market today for tea, coffee, butter, and produce. Refrigerated goods were well stocked - eggs, butter, milk, cheese and meat. Plenty of produce.
No paper products, no pasta or sauce, rice, and beans. No paper products, hand sanitizer, or liquid hand soap. There was a lady in aisle where diapers are usually stocked yelling about diapers being sold out and what is her son supposed to wear now.

Eggs, anything paper, any cleaners, OJ, milk, half and half, canned goods. Freezer section was wiped out. I just went in for milk but took a look around to see what was going on. Found milk at Walgreens, they had just gotten a delivery.

I finally got two dozen eggs today ordering from Whole Foods on Prime Now. Amazon cut their 2-hour delivery windows completely and only had 1-hour delivery windows, which they charge $5 for. R59, I saw the same thing on Saturday, except it was the regular lettuce. No romaine, no iceberg. No green leaf or red leaf or Boston. Who the hell was buying all that lettuce? Do they think they can hoard it? Or freeze it?
Also no parsley, flat or curly, organic or regular, but plenty of cilantro. Most other fruits and vegetables were in plentiful supply.
R69, I’m not R65, but I also bought two dozen eggs. They had an unusually distant expiry date – April 22. The answer to your question, obviously, is eat them. Eggs are versatile and go with pretty much anything.

Refrigerated eggs keep for a long time, weeks at least, so I bought a couple of extra dozens. If I end up on house arrest for two weeks or something, at least I can make popovers for breakfast, or omelettes with frozen spinach and cheese.

R89 My friend in Ozzie said you can't go into a public toilet where he is - NSW because people are jimmying open the dispensers and pinching the toilet paper. In the supermarkets here we are out of coughdrops and syrups etc that contain Zinc. Powdered milk and shelf-stable milk is low but can still be found. Everything else still available but we are about 2 weeks behind in terms of the virus so have had a bit more time to stock up.

I went to Walgreen's this morning to pick up some prescriptions. A sign stated a limit of two packages of toilet paper per family, which did not matter as the shelves were bare of paper goods. I picked up the last can of pineapple and one can of beef with vegetable soup. There was still some spaghetti and jarred sauce. All the bottled water was gone. There was plenty of laundry detergent, frozen food and snack foods. Oh, there was no honey. I'd wanted to pick up a spare for my morning tea.
Datalounge had me worried early, so I stocked up on paper goods and dry groceries two weeks ago. I just pick up a couple of things here and there to ensure variety over the next few weeks.

They probably will R118 if they shop in the Grease FIre Aisle at the Dollar store...

-I lined up at my Trader Joe's this morning at 8am. It usually opens then. Someone in line said they were now opening at 9am from now on. I had to wait an hour in the cold (37) degrees. But when I walked in the store was well stocked.
I walked out with a pack of TOILET PAPER and PAPER TOWELS.
JEALOUS BITCHES?

OMG, r119, if you could only see my tears of laughter as I tried ten times to read aloud your post without cracking up!

Went to my store to day all the jars of tomato sauce were gone, a whole aisle gone well except for the twenty or so $8.00 jars of "gourmet" brands.

I was on vacation last week so I couldn’t stock up. As a sales rep, my company has told us to stay home. It took me until today to find toilet paper. I lucked out by going to Sams Club when it opened this morning. Now I’ll be able to wipe my ass with Charmin for months.

All I found was:

If this lasts 18 months (I don't think it will), expect a LOT of suicides. Hell, expect a lot of them if this even lasts 6 months.
by Anonymous | reply 132 | March 19, 2020 4:55 AM |
This won't last a month because Americans will do what they always do and move on and stop caring.

Amazon needs to step their shit up and stop being out of so much. Bezos is a billionaire. Invest some of that money into production, Jeff. You'll clearly get it back

by Anonymous | reply 136 | March 19, 2020 5:05 AM |
This is so stressful and depressing. It would be hard enough if it lasted 2 or 3 months.

I saw my first face masks yesterday. Both were on males, one guy going into CVS in a mask & another guy in a supermarket.
We need to simply let nature take its course. I might die, but I can’t live forever. People should get their shit in order and go out into the brave new world. We can’t shelter in place every time a new infectious disease comes along. We’d all be confined in summer so we don’t get West Nile or Zika virus.

R138, Big talk, until you realize you are losing the ability to breathe, eyes bulging in abject terror, mouth gasping like a hooked fish, mind reeling at its imminent extinction. Our trillion-dollar sham of a government has revealed its evil indifference, its only raison d'etre the enriching of the already-wealthy, who are laughing now in their private flights to their private islands and/or underground bunkers, along with richly-compensated private nurses and doctors with medicines and necessary equipment.
Billionaires have been preparing for Doomsday, mostly by bribing and blackmailing government officials into passing favorable tax laws.
The rest of us will be told to get our affairs in order. And that funeral services will comprise only the dead and the diggers.

Looked for toilet paper in about a half dozen stores. Only one place had it and sold small packages with a limit of 2 per customer. I had more success with Kleenex and paper towels but had to look around. No sign of Lysol wipes, hand sanitizer and Lysol all purpose cleaner in spray form.
by Anonymous | reply 141 | March 19, 2020 7:06 PM |
How are you all experiencing items being sold out? Don't you know the supermarkets have special hours for eldergays to get first dibs?
by Anonymous | reply 142 | March 19, 2020 10:02 PM |
R142, I consider those hours ageist because they're usually at some ungodly time like 7 a.m.
I demand hours that are useful for night-owl eldergays. Midnight-1 a.m. would be about right. They could go later as far as I'm concerned, but some weak sisters go to bed at 1 or so.

No cat food to be found anywhere. I don't want Choo Choo to starve!
by Anonymous | reply 150 | March 20, 2020 2:05 PM |
They are doing early hours for seniors here. I did see eggs in the store yesterday for the first time in a week. However, I've also decamped to Palm Springs, which is a relatively small city.
by Anonymous | reply 151 | March 20, 2020 3:44 PM |
R150 - give Kitty canned tuna, salmon, boneless sardines etc. Choo Choo will love you for it!
by Anonymous | reply 152 | March 20, 2020 3:59 PM |
R152 - Choo Choo is fussy and only eats Sheba and Purina. She won't touch canned tuna, salmon etc and I can't make her.
by Anonymous | reply 153 | March 20, 2020 4:40 PM |
Thanks for the links. Little Choo Choo won't go hungry after all. (She turned her nose up at my home-made terrine de canard, btw.)

Tell Choo Choo to eat whatever the fuck you give her or she gonna be exploring another one of her nine lives!

Would pets actually starve themselves to death if they didn't receive the food they want? That seems so contrary to the nature of animals to try to survive.
by Anonymous | reply 159 | March 20, 2020 11:33 PM |
That is an interesting question R159. I had a cat who just would not eat tuna. Maybe he was just too used to dry food, but he would take one look at it and move on. Even when I mixed it with dry food he would eat around it.
by Anonymous | reply 160 | March 21, 2020 12:25 AM |
I thinks pets rely on their owners being soft. I would be more take it or leave it.

[quote] Would pets actually starve themselves to death if they didn't receive the food they want?
Cats might. They can lose too much weight too quickly and get ill. Sometimes it goes past the point of no return. So they didn’t intentionally not eat which led to their death, but they died as a result of not eating.

Right? Seriously, they need to open small outlet stores that sell only:
Toilet Paper
Clorox and Lysol Wipes
Hand Sanitizer
Anti-bacterial Soap
From our hands and butts to God's ear, hopefully!

I'm going to pick up a yoga mat today. Was able to find one online at Target (for pick up, nothing in store was in stock). Need some free weights, too.
I'm out of dry cat food and a few other items. I can't buy in bulk or things will go bad. So far, stores have been stocked well enough near me. I'll be out buying today.
