I live in midtown Manhattan. My brother in Oregon says he stocking up food and suggested that I do the same. Should I really be worried and what exactly should I do? I live in a studio.
So do I need to stock up on food and toilet paper etc?

by Anonymous | reply 2 | March 12, 2020 3:00 AM |
Not really. Maybe and try and keep at least two weeks worth of toilet paper on hand...not because it's necessary but because idiots keep hoarding it.
Wholesale supply trucks to groceries/stores aren't going to stop because of a pandemic. Supply lines are fine , at least internally, for the time being. If you buy stuff that comes from overseas, it could be a problem.
It never hurts to have at least 3 to 7 days worth of "rations" in the house...canned soup/tuna/beans/rice/etc in case of emergency but you also don't need to act like a deranged "End of Days Prepper" type and have enough supplies in your small home to last a year. It's just silly.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | March 12, 2020 3:01 AM |
I don't know about the stock in actual supermarkets and groceries. I haven't been in over 3 weeks, but Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods are out of stock on almost everything. Every item I usually buy without problems is out of stock. Everyone, is out of rubbing alcohol, I mean Target, Walmart, Costco, Amazon, every small drug store. It's kind of scary.

by Anonymous | reply 6 | March 12, 2020 3:06 AM |
I was in a supermarket tonight in Queens (a borough of NYC).
It did look like it had been hit hard by shoppers but there was still a lot of items on the shelves. The only thing I noticed completely gone was the Clorox bleach cleaning spray that was on sale. All the none sale bleach cleaning items (including just regular old bleach) were there.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | March 12, 2020 3:06 AM |
Agree with R3. There are shortages now because some uninformed people are hoarding, believing that suddenly the mega corporations behind Coca Cola, Bounty Paper Towels, Wonder Bread, etc will cease all production. Under what scenario would that occur?
by Anonymous | reply 8 | March 12, 2020 3:07 AM |
I live in Seattle aka "Ground Zero" for Covid-19 in the U.S. and the only things that are impossible to get are hand sanitizer and some kinds of cleansers. TP comes and goes. Sometimes, canned soups and rice and beans get picked over but then a delivery truck comes and they re-stock.

It's crazy R4. I've been in my local drug store twice in the last week and they are completely out of Isopropyl alcohol. I have a specific use for it and am almost out. I asked the cashier if they had limited the number people could purchase and she said no. I can just see greedy shits buying 10-20 bottles. So selfish.

It is interesting how empty many store shelves are .. I was at Costco tonight and it was wiped out.
TP is the least of your worries, you can always wash your dirty ass in the shower. Id buy some shelf stable foods and what youd need to get through an illness, gatorade, etc.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | March 12, 2020 3:09 AM |
R8 I'm guessing a lot of these idiots watch those stupid Prepper shows. Or, watch too many "Zombie Apocalypse" or dystopia themed TV shows. OR, think this is like a hurricane or other natural disaster where supply lines can be disrupted for long periods of time.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | March 12, 2020 3:10 AM |
I once read an article that said that at any given time, there is only enough food in Manhattan to last 3 days in stores and restaurants - obviously excluding whatever individuals have stockpiled in their own homes.
I don't get the stockpiling of toilet paper. Sure, get enough to last a couple weeks. But honestly, if we're living in such a dire situation that production of toilet paper ends worldwide for an extended period of time, we probably aren't eating enough food to worry about needing toilet paper in the first place.

The less you eat, the less toilet paper you’ll need.

I went shopping for a few things tonight and stood in disbelief at the empty toilet paper aisle. I was also surprised at how few paper towels were left. I picked up a package, because I'm out anyway. I'm actually surprised that more people aren't hoarding kleenex, I picked up some extra kleenex, too! I didn't buy too much food, just a case of soup. I'm wondering if I should buy more, but better not yet.
(I was also able to get my hands on 2 bottles of hand sanitizer!)

You just want to be sure you have have what you need in the house in case you can’t leave the house, or you don’t want to because everyone else is sick. fill up the freezer with frozen veggies, meals etc. buy some canned goods/pasta etc, get disinfectant, soap, coffee, wine/booze and hunker down. Have Food for two weeks.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | March 12, 2020 3:23 AM |
I was thinking about that today. In downtown Manhattan and the Rite Aid shelves are emptying. I don’t really cook and rely on delivery or eating it for everything. I should probably buy food I can store.
In the post-Sandy blackout, it became a problem finding food. But at least you could go uptown to get it.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | March 12, 2020 3:25 AM |
Italy still has grocery stores open, but hours are limited, they are only letting in a few people at a time and everyone has to stand in line 1 meter away from each other. I'd rather have stuff on hand if it comes to that. No need to go crazy but I'd definitely like to have enough to last 2-3 weeks.

I'm far from a prepper freak, but this is pandemic and a serious threat. Other things no one is talking about are the aftereffects of the virus. It's just not a simple flu. The new studies out of China show that the majority of Coronavirus patients now out of danger had permanent lung damage.

The reason TP is selling out faster than kleenex or paper towels is because toilet paper is made to break down after you flush it. Kleenex -- especially the 'soft' kind -- is coated with chemicals that ABSORB water and can actually clog your toilet.

You have to plan ahead.
Amazon isn't 'out of everything', i.e. food, paper products. They're running out of stuff because more are shopping online, but all that means is their Prime Pantry delivery is taking 3 days instead of 2 hours.

Exactly. It’s amazing to me how people think things get to stores. They get there by people who barely make a living wage driving dangerous trucks. And they’re stocked by people making less than a living wage in stores. And if illness sweeps through the poor and working poor in this country, your “supply lines” will collapse like a bad soufflé. And trust me, these people who work at Walmart and deliver your Amazon packages DON’T GiVE A FUCK ABOUT YOU or whether you can fill your fat mouth or wipe your stupid ass.
Goddamn people are so fucking arrogant and DUMB in this country.

R32, You know there is shelf-stable milk in cartons, right?
by Anonymous | reply 52 | March 12, 2020 1:03 PM |
I’d stock up, OP. I’ve been seeing shortages for about a week now. Big box stores like Costco don’t have toilet paper and they’re rationing water. There’s almost no cleaning supplies at all. Peroxide will do, if you can’t get Lysol or similar. But it needs to be fresh.
I just got a notification from CNN saying Trump’s speech last night didn’t reassure anyone and people are really panicking now. Also, the fact that Tom Hanks and his wife got it means people are waking up.
I don’t know exactly why, but yesterday, hours before Trump’s speech, I got the impression something had changed. People on the news were acting scared. I think there’s some news that just came out yesterday that’s scaring the shit out of new anchors. Jake Tapper had some expert on yesterday and he kept asking the guy, are the figures really that bad, should people really worry? The guy wouldn’t back down at all and Tapper seemed really surprised.
If you don’t have much room, at least get tuna, peanut butter and jelly and crackers, cans of soup and chili, and some spaghetti and tomato paste and stewed tomatoes or chopped tomatoes. If you have Italian seasoning, parsley, salt and pepper, and some frozen vegetables, you can make some different things. Pick up some eggs, oatmeal or hot instant breakfast cereal, and juice concentrate. Put the cans under the bed, the grains in the freezer or cupboard, and you’ll have the basics if worse comes to worst. And try to get some toilet paper if you see it because a lot of places are out.
If you can’t find items, try the more upscale markets they are better stocked than Walmart and Costco now. Gas up the car, there were long lines yesterday. It’s my understanding that Auto Zone may have hand sanitizer, I haven’t checked for myself yet.
I think after Trump’s speech, people are really going to panic today.

I’ve made the decision to get out of NYC. It’s impossible to avoid regular contact with a lot of people and everything you touch has been touched by a ton of other people. Seems like cities should be prime breeding grounds for infection - but have seen no studies or analysis of urban vs rural areas impacted. In any case, self-isolating in the country for a week or two.

I lived in Germany for 8 years and have traveled to many other European countries, Asia, Canada, Mexico, etc. Only once do I ever remember seeing a bidet in a private home in Germany, and I certainly don't recall seeing them in public in other countries. Squat toilets were common in Asia but bidets - never. Germans have weird shelf toilets where you are forced to scrub your shit away. Is that more hygenic? I doubt it. Tip: for milk, look for Nestle Nido. They don't actively *market* it in the US, but Walmart always has it (sometimes, in the 'Hispanic' or 'Ethnic' food aisles). It's powdered whole milk that tastes like aseptic/Parmalat milk when reconstituted... not as good as 'normal' milk, but ENORMOUSLY better than the "nonfat dry milk" that normally gets sold in the US. I always keep a can around for times when I accidentally run out of milk since you can make as little or as much at a time as you like. It's also handy for turning milk into cream if a recipe calls for it & you don't have any... just add it to regular milk, or use more powder.
I discovered it after Hurricane Wilma, when I had to live out of ice chests for 2 weeks (ie, could keep stuff sort of cold, but doing it *reliably* was a LOT of daily work). For breakfast, I'd put ice & water in a glass (only as much ice as would completely melt after stirring), add Nido, mix, give it ~10 minutes to reconstitute, add more ice for final chill, and eat breakfast without having to worry whether the milk spoiled overnight.
Tip: it NEEDS ~10 minutes to fully reconstitute... but once it does, it tastes just like normal shelf-stable milk from aseptic boxes.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | March 12, 2020 4:40 PM |
Don't forget to stockpile food & litter for your kitties. If YOU get sick (not necessarily badly), you won't be in any mood to forage through empty shelves for cat food & litter... and if you end up incapacitated or dead, whomever has to care for your kitties will be even LESS willing to do it. If you show signs of visible illness, you might be denied entry to stores.
Most cat food has a 2 year + shelf life, so buy 2 or 3 months' worth. Litter has basically no meaningful set expiration date, so buy even more.
Don't forget any medical supplies they might need, especially needles. Keep an extra fluids bag if it's cheap & your kitty uses them. If supplies end up rationed, veterinarians will probably get the short end of the stick, so stockpiling is even MORE urgent if your cat has a chronic condition.

Maybe it's this: Congress' in-house doctor is predicting 70-150 million U.S. coronavirus cases, or about a third of the population.
Right now, the World Health Organization says the mortality rate is 3.4%. So that would mean about 2 to 5 million deaths in the U.S. Even if the mortality rate is only 1%, it would mean anywhere from 700,000 to 1.5 million deaths.

Peanut butter was just the fat free stuff that tastes like cardboard. Pass.
All instant oatmeal gone.

I went to the post office this morning which is adjacent to a nearby Costco, which doesn't open until 10 a.m. It was an hour before opening and the parking lot was completely full. I thought that they had maybe opened earlier, but the doors were still closed. The line to get in wrapped around the building TWICE.

Most truck drivers make a lot more than minimum wage. And, if the pandemic is bad enough that enough people are sick that it shuts down supply lines or water and electric systems, then, yes, we are fucked.
But, even at its worst, in China and Italy, that hasn't happened. Because the situation IS bad but it's not like all the idiotic TV/movies you're all apparently watching. There's absolutely ZERO need to have 3 months of tp in your apartment or a closet or garage full of bottled water.

Heart disease already kill 650,000 people a year and if some of those people get coronavirus and die directly from it instead, they would have died anyway. So the real number will be how many additional deaths on top of the number already expected from other causes.

You could walk into a Family Dollar or Dollar General, and the Purell brand hand sanitizers will all be sold out, but there are plenty of off brand hand sanitizers on the shelves. Same goes with stuff like toilet paper - Charmin, gone, but store brand "1000 sheets per roll" type, they're stocked full of them.

In SF could not get the proper 60-70% alcohol over the last 2 days. no wipes; out of empty spray bottles. using the 90% stuff that I didn't want to use (not as effective).

I hope my workplace tells us to stay home. About half of my job can be done remotely and half has to be on-site. Fingers crossed.

Why would it need to be shelf stable? Is it to stock the food shelf next to the couch in your TV room?

"And this is why I did my survivalist provision shopping last week. Nothing on the shelves in Manhattan."

R113, So it lasts longer than fresh and takes up no freezer room?
Two weeks. Hmmmm. Entities and venues might be saying NOW that they might re-open, admit audiences, and return to business as usual then, but that's simply the equivalent of saying "We'll see."
Better to be prepared to stay home, strictly at home, for a couple months at least.
Like, even if you caught C-V today, were tested, treated, isolated, and cured in two weeks, would you really want to go grocery shopping or to concerts, work, or school afterwards? When you probably didn't know how you first got infected?
I'd be paranoid, frankly.

R114, It's not just the running out of food; it's also the running out FOR food and putting oneself amongst who knows whom.
C-V has infected an NBA player; Mrs. Trudeau; the Hankses; government officials of Iran and Brazil who had contact with Trump, Pence, Ivanka, Cruz ,and Barr; doctors, students, policemen, and so on.
But it can't get you, right? Because you can buy food at a bodega.
by Anonymous | reply 117 | March 13, 2020 1:58 PM |
My timing for most things is usually very bad, but I lucked out this time.
Just by chance I shopped last week and early this week before the hysteria really hit. Not because of the virus but because I was running low on some things (tp for one) and just stocked up as usual.
As for hand sanitizer I realized I had a bottle that I bought some time ago just sitting near my computer.
I was out this morning to drop off some things in the library return and the local grocery store lots were very busy.
The speed that these quarantines have gone into effect - I find it all stunning.
I had a conversation yesterday with someone who explained the idea behind "Flattening the Curve" and how important it is to work to prevent a huge spike in cases that could overwhelm the medical system, meaning less equipment (fewer respirators, for example) for the real cases.
Well worth looking at if you haven't seen it.

In Florida, there's now a shortage of cat litter, too... at least, the normal midrange kind. All Petco had left was wood/newspaper pellets, silica gel, the exotic & expensive stuff that's $25+/15lbs, and the cheapest shit nobody ever buys because it either turns into a cement slab, absorbs poorly, or stinks to hell after one dump.
by Anonymous | reply 137 | March 14, 2020 5:23 PM |
I think the stores will restock. I went to Target today and they had quite a bit of toilet paper, when a few days ago, they had none. It can't hurt to get some cans of tuna, soup, pasta and frozen vegetables.Freeze a loaf of bread. I ordered cat food from Chewy's last week and still haven't gotten it. They are terribly back up, so I picked up enough cat food at the store for the week. The shelves are still bare in the soap, hand sanitizer and household cleaner sections, though.

Lots of people have well water that is contaminated with chemicals/insecticides and the don’t drink it or cook with it. They buy gallon bottles of water. They might be afraid they will get sick & be unable to get to the store or be afraid their store might close due to sick workers.

R119, I keep a few gallons of distilled water on hand because I use a CPAP machine and need it for that. I don't stock pile shit like individual bottles of Aquafina though, just the cheap 99 cents per gallon stuff. I do however fill my empty distilled water gallon containers with tap water for emergency use, like when the water goes out in my building and it takes them hours to fix it - you can't flush a toilet with no water. You can't cook without clean water.

In partial defense, some places in Florida (esp. SW Florida) have city water that tastes like literal ass... Fort Myers is so bad, you need bottled water to brush your teeth without gagging, and it affects the taste of food. Filtering helps, but it still tastes bad. But that's more a need for cheap gallon jugs of water from publix, vs literal 16-20oz bottles. Still, if you needed enough to last a month for cooking & toothbrushing, I could see buying 8-12 gallons.

You need to put jellybeans in pill vials, maybe even water in syringes. Use these when he thinks YOU think he’s not looking. Then hide them well.
