Why did TV Host Steve Jones flop so hard in the USA?

He was so charming and charismatic as a Presenter in the UK. He was funny and engaging and you loved him (plus he was sooooo good looking) but when Simon Cowell brung him to the States as a Host he flopped so hard. He was stiff, boring and didn’t know what he was doing, as opposed to in the UK where he always had things moving smoothly.

I always wondered why he did so bad here. Is it that TV works differently here? The Production is different? Or his personality just didn’t translate the same here as in the UK?

I remember critics tearing him apart as the Host, and once the season was over, he was fired almost immediately by Simon.

He deserved better.

I remember when he dated Hayden Panettiere. Psycho bitch drove him nuts.

He is now happily married for a few years.

He should be given another chance, The X Factor(US version) was a shitshow all around. He wasn't the problem.

by Anonymousreply 2March 10, 2020 11:03 PM

He looks boring.

He was the least of that shows problems, but they needed a scapegoat so he was the easiest target. His work was never the same after that, as he was never offered big jobs after being fired and made to look like a fool in the USA. He was taken as a joke, at least at the time, in the UK.

I met him at JFK airport not long after he was fired from X-Factor and he was very very sweet and funny. VERY TALL, BUFF and has a gorgeous face in person.

by Anonymousreply 5March 10, 2020 11:16 PM

OP, Because he is uncut.

by Anonymousreply 6March 10, 2020 11:17 PM

It never helped that the Judges never cooperated with him and made his job of trying to keep the show on schedule impossible every week. Paula and LA Reid were the worst, and you could tell none of the four of them liked him. Paula did not even try and hide her dislike for him on that show.

Hosts are in a hard position, because you can do well in the UK and come over to the US and do even better (Simon Cowell, Jamie Oliver), or you can do well in the UK and flop in the US (Anne Robinson. Piers Morgan). It's very hard to tell why Cowell succeeded and Robinson flopped.

by Anonymousreply 8March 10, 2020 11:25 PM

Cowell succeeded because he was mean and caused drama and headlines. Everyone was speaking about how mean he was during the early days of AI, which were also the early days of competition reality shows. He was fresh and became a household name.

by Anonymousreply 9March 10, 2020 11:30 PM

He interviewed Megan Fox when Transformers 2 was coming out and I remember them being super flirty throughout.

I found the interview. Yup. They were flirty and it’s a fun interview to watch. He’s very charming. I wouldn’t be shocked if they fucked after.

[quote] you can do well in the UK and flop in the US (Anne Robinson. Piers Morgan)

I wouldn't say either of them really flopped. I, and most people I know, stopped watching The Weakest Link when they changed to all celebrity and gimmick episodes, not because of Anne Robinson. Piers suffered because his CNN show was a replacement for a legend, who didn't want to retire, but it did last three seasons. Plus, he did six seasons of America's Got Talent and won a season of Celebrity Apprentice.

by Anonymousreply 11March 10, 2020 11:48 PM

Piers did alright. Anne was fun but, like r11 said, the show lost its audience with all the Celebrity shit.

by Anonymousreply 12March 10, 2020 11:50 PM

Steve is also too nice to host those type of shows. He would do well as the host for Dancing with the Stars or something like that.

by Anonymousreply 13March 10, 2020 11:51 PM

It’s the accent. Americans can’t understand the Queen’s English. They can only understand their own version of English.

by Anonymousreply 29March 11, 2020 3:38 AM

His accent is Welsh not the Queen's English RP accent. English accents, especially posh ones are readily accepted and understood in the US.

by Anonymousreply 30March 11, 2020 3:42 AM

[quote]but when Simon Cowell brung him to the States

Oh, dear.

by Anonymousreply 31March 11, 2020 4:08 AM

His accent was too thick and he tried too hard to be funny even though he wasn’t. He was a dime a dozen in terms of Brits coming to America hoping to succeed.

by Anonymousreply 32March 11, 2020 4:15 AM

Is it any surprise that Simon brought a fine man to the US? Somethings not right there.

by Anonymousreply 33March 11, 2020 4:26 AM

Remember when that little girl Rachel Crow got voted off and threw a fit? She dropped to the floor like she'd been fucking SHOT. It was fucking hilarious.

by Anonymousreply 34March 11, 2020 4:27 AM

R33 Simon knows what works and what sells. He handpicked Steve because he does very well in the UK and he is tall and beautiful. He is trying to bring viewers in.

In the end it didn’t work so he coughed up a lot more money for season 2 and brought in Mario Lopez and Khloe Kardashian. That didn’t work either. Khloe was awful.

by Anonymousreply 35March 11, 2020 3:41 PM

R35 I was being facetious, I think Simon is a big old fag who has been bearding himself for years.

by Anonymousreply 36March 11, 2020 4:00 PM

R36 I agree. But that isn’t why he chose Steve Jones.

by Anonymousreply 37March 11, 2020 4:05 PM

He’s very good-looking, almost distractingly so, but I find something off-putting about him. Maybe just general straight guy arrogance but I’m not surprised the audience didn’t take to him.

by Anonymousreply 38March 11, 2020 4:26 PM

I know what he can present.

by Anonymousreply 39March 11, 2020 4:28 PM

Who gives a fuck?

by Anonymousreply 40March 11, 2020 4:38 PM

I think Steve Jones was hired because of his looks and fancy accent, but he didn't vibe with the US audience.

Did the original show go through focus group testing in the US or was it just Cowell trying things out on the go?

by Anonymousreply 41March 11, 2020 5:19 PM

R7 I went to a taping of the first season. Me and my friend spent the rest of the day shouting Steve’s catchphrase “Paulaaaaa...” in a British accent. It was painful to watch him try to scold her into making a decision over and over again.

The X Factor was a very strange show and it never quite seemed to click, but it did have a fun, unpredictability to it. It seemed much less polished and under control than American Idol, which made it pretty watchable. Fox had no confidence in it. They sent out exhaustive surveys to viewers after every episode asking to rate the judges, the host, the contestants, etc.

by Anonymousreply 44March 11, 2020 5:49 PM

R43 I guess we know what his penis looks like. But in black color. Nice size. Thick.

Steve Jones accent reads as "fancy" to some of you? That's hilarious.

by Anonymousreply 53March 11, 2020 11:06 PM

Personally I LOVED The X-Factor USA. They actually had one act who had some success - Fifth Harmony - which spawned Camilla and Normani.

The first season was a mess. As r34 stated, the Rachel Crow episode was must-see TV. That is one of the best moments on television. Nicole, torn, because she knew her act wasn't as good as Rachel but she couldn't get rid of one of her own acts. But then Rachel was so cute and so young. And the crying competition between the two of them was hilarious. But when Rachel dropped to the floor it was a spectacular shit-show.

The later seasons were just as messy. Britney was a drugged-up zombie who would barely speak more than three syllables. She was like Vicky from Small Wonder.

And then Demi Lovato came on with such a cunty attitude and seemed threatened by any woman on the show. Its messiness was part of its charm.

Steve did a fine job though. Mario and Khloe were horrible.

by Anonymousreply 54March 12, 2020 12:03 AM

Americans don't like to many Brits on American television. The accents can be way to much, especially in the morning. Which is why they aren't on morning television here in America.

Americans will call the networks and complain if there's to many Brits on TV. The accents are just to foriegn to be comfortable hearing on a daily basis.

by Anonymousreply 57March 12, 2020 3:51 AM

Why do so many Brits come to America? Is the UK not enough success for them? I don't get it. Why are they always coming over here to try and invade our markets?

America is a tough market to crack, Especially for foreigners. I guess that's why so many go back home to the UK. It's the accents that get on my nerves. They come over and you have to hear their accents, we faught a war to be done with the Brits, and here they are constantly coming over here trying to take over our country. They've done enough damage to the world.

And I say all of this knowing America isn't perfect either. But I really do wish the Brits would stop coming here. The Same with Canadians, and Australians. I don't like seeing them on my TV.

by Anonymousreply 58March 12, 2020 4:00 AM

I love the British, 90% of tv I watch is BritBox, PBS, Acorn, etc...

by Anonymousreply 59March 12, 2020 4:05 AM

That's cool and all, R58, but you already posted the same thing in R57.

by Anonymousreply 60March 12, 2020 4:20 AM

R58 is a goon. 90% chance you watch a Canadian regularly on TV, in movies or in music and literally have no clue.

by Anonymousreply 61March 12, 2020 4:25 AM

R61 Or a Brit, many British actors in the US are actually playing Americans.

by Anonymousreply 62March 12, 2020 4:27 AM

R62 And that's the problem. I don't like the trickery they bring to America. But I'm smart, I always Google the actors I watch in film and television. I want to know where they are from. If their British, I don't watch. Canadians are a little better, because their north of us. But I still like to know where they are from.

It's kinda like in the "Note Book." Two Canadian actors playing lead southern characters in south Carolina. What the fuck do Canadians know BBC about the damn American south? The same with brits playing southerners, it's a disrespect. Fuck them.

I hate it.

by Anonymousreply 77March 12, 2020 1:52 PM

R34 that was definitely one of the funniest reality tv moments of all time for me - I think I probably would put that at number 2, with number 1 being the 'David's Dead' saga from Celebrity Big Brother.

Didn't Simon Cowell try to get that cheryl cole women to happen in America too, but she ended up being fired for some reason.

What is it with so many Brits desperate to make it in America? I think it's kinda weird. How do people in the UK entertainment industry see America? What is it about the US that have them desperate to come here and make a name for themselves?

You see a lot of them over here, but they don't really take off the way an American born television host does. The Brits who come here, are just kinda hanging around on the sidelines just existing. You see them here and there, but no one really pays them any attention.

Even Katie Price didn't cut it in America. And her show aired on the same network as the Kardashians. And that's a huge audience, but that show was canceled. Why is the UK not sufficient enough for these people?

I really want to know.

by Anonymousreply 92March 12, 2020 8:58 PM

R86 and it's not reciprocated. I lived in U.K. from 2003-08, and I NEVER saw an American presenter or news reader On British television once.

by Anonymousreply 93March 12, 2020 8:58 PM

But none of those people are really that high profile in the American conscience. Like I said, you see them but their not really dominating the industry.

Not even close. Simon Cowell is probably the only major exception. But he's been on American television for nearly 20 years at this point, which is why he does so well here.

by Anonymousreply 94March 12, 2020 9:01 PM

Does James Corden count?

Money in the UK is worth more than in the USA. Their money is more valuable. They can and some do become richer than many American celebs.

The thing about breaking out in America is that brings you more status all over the world and we are the hardest market to break into. If you make it here you can make it anywhere

The fact is that TV presenters in the UK have a much more limited selection of work, although we have digital/cable channels the majority of them do not have 'big name' presenters, we only have 5 main TV channels and 2 of those are BBC channels. Even the top BBC presenters are usually only on about £1m a year. Plus, unlike most UK TV shows, US TV shows have a far more global audience, which means more earning potential in terms of book deals, endorsements, adverts etc.

The UK is completely mystified as to why James Corden has become successful in the US by the way. Generally he is hated here, and the only good thing he ever did was a BBC comedy called Gavin & Stacy which I don't think ever took off in the US.

by Anonymousreply 111March 13, 2020 9:23 AM

Why are they paid so little in the UK, while in America it's not unheard of for our news anchors, talk show hosts and television personalities to make insane amounts of money. You have late night TV hosts making as much as $15-$30M per salaries. And take Oprah Winfrey who was making $315M a year from her syndicated talk show.

As well as morning tv hosts making as much as $12-$25M a year in salaries for hosting these shows. I guess those types of salaries are out of the question in the UK. I not even going to get started on what American film Stars and TV Stars make per picture/episode if their in a really successful position in their careers.

I guess America is their best bet for making huge money in entertainment and media. But I still don't like hearing the accents on American television and I'm not the only who feels this way. They just seem way out of sink with the rest of the country on American television. I think that's why so many do so poorly in America. Australians and Brits specially. They seem to only be able to be taken in small doses, and not all at once.

Issue is Nicole never registered with American Audiences and most people didn’t like her on this show.

I wonder why Cowell felt the need to try and bring all of these Brits over to America for the American version of Xfactor? There's plenty of American hosts who would've been perfect. It eventually ended up being American hosts who hosted the show anyway. But still.

A Brit bringing more Brits to America to try and take over our markets. Is never going to work. There's only but so much Americans will allow foreigners to do in this country. Especially Brits.

by Anonymousreply 122March 14, 2020 9:18 PM

That's not true. Brit actors are all over American TV shows and movies.

by Anonymousreply 123March 14, 2020 9:20 PM

We read that the first time you posted it, R122.

If only.

R125 Well they can't tun for president.

by Anonymousreply 126March 14, 2020 9:26 PM

Many people don’t know British actors are British for a while

by Anonymousreply 127March 14, 2020 9:28 PM

R123 I don't understand why they have to come here. They come here and take from people who are born and raised in America, and who have history here going back centuries. And the Brits just swoop in and try to take over.

Fuck them.

by Anonymousreply 128March 14, 2020 9:28 PM

Run for president.

Who needs to be in office?

by Anonymousreply 130March 14, 2020 9:29 PM

R128 fuck off. The same can be said of cities or states.

People move to NYC and take jobs from the Natives there. But you all don’t stop.

by Anonymousreply 131March 14, 2020 9:30 PM

R131 NO, fuck you, I'm sick of the fucking Brits in America. You fuck off Cunt.

This is our country. The founders did not want Brits in our lives, America was founded to be rid of the fucking Brits.

Fuck them.

by Anonymousreply 132March 14, 2020 9:42 PM

Does it annoy you that you're speaking their language?

by Anonymousreply 133March 14, 2020 9:46 PM

R132 and I’m sick of you transplants invading my home city. Get out. Stay where you belong.

by Anonymousreply 134March 14, 2020 9:46 PM

R133 No because I speak American English, not British English.

So no it doesn't bother me. I'm an American.

by Anonymousreply 135March 14, 2020 9:51 PM

R134 I can go wherever I want in America. But you'd be happy to here that I don't live in NYC, and I actually love my hometown where I live right now.

NYC is going to shit anyway.

Fuck that.

by Anonymousreply 136March 14, 2020 9:54 PM

Hear.

I'm from the south so I know the sentiment perfectly.

Do you know from where it originates?

He should try again. Second time will be a charm in the states.
