Why did TV Host Steve Jones flop so hard in the USA?
He was so charming and charismatic as a Presenter in the UK. He was funny and engaging and you loved him (plus he was sooooo good looking) but when Simon Cowell brung him to the States as a Host he flopped so hard. He was stiff, boring and didn’t know what he was doing, as opposed to in the UK where he always had things moving smoothly.
I always wondered why he did so bad here. Is it that TV works differently here? The Production is different? Or his personality just didn’t translate the same here as in the UK?
I remember critics tearing him apart as the Host, and once the season was over, he was fired almost immediately by Simon.
He deserved better.

He was the least of that shows problems, but they needed a scapegoat so he was the easiest target. His work was never the same after that, as he was never offered big jobs after being fired and made to look like a fool in the USA. He was taken as a joke, at least at the time, in the UK.
I met him at JFK airport not long after he was fired from X-Factor and he was very very sweet and funny. VERY TALL, BUFF and has a gorgeous face in person.

It never helped that the Judges never cooperated with him and made his job of trying to keep the show on schedule impossible every week. Paula and LA Reid were the worst, and you could tell none of the four of them liked him. Paula did not even try and hide her dislike for him on that show.

Hosts are in a hard position, because you can do well in the UK and come over to the US and do even better (Simon Cowell, Jamie Oliver), or you can do well in the UK and flop in the US (Anne Robinson. Piers Morgan). It's very hard to tell why Cowell succeeded and Robinson flopped.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | March 10, 2020 11:25 PM

Cowell succeeded because he was mean and caused drama and headlines. Everyone was speaking about how mean he was during the early days of AI, which were also the early days of competition reality shows. He was fresh and became a household name.

I wouldn't say either of them really flopped. I, and most people I know, stopped watching The Weakest Link when they changed to all celebrity and gimmick episodes, not because of Anne Robinson. Piers suffered because his CNN show was a replacement for a legend, who didn't want to retire, but it did last three seasons. Plus, he did six seasons of America's Got Talent and won a season of Celebrity Apprentice.

R7 I went to a taping of the first season. Me and my friend spent the rest of the day shouting Steve’s catchphrase “Paulaaaaa...” in a British accent. It was painful to watch him try to scold her into making a decision over and over again.
The X Factor was a very strange show and it never quite seemed to click, but it did have a fun, unpredictability to it. It seemed much less polished and under control than American Idol, which made it pretty watchable. Fox had no confidence in it. They sent out exhaustive surveys to viewers after every episode asking to rate the judges, the host, the contestants, etc.

Personally I LOVED The X-Factor USA. They actually had one act who had some success - Fifth Harmony - which spawned Camilla and Normani.
The first season was a mess. As r34 stated, the Rachel Crow episode was must-see TV. That is one of the best moments on television. Nicole, torn, because she knew her act wasn't as good as Rachel but she couldn't get rid of one of her own acts. But then Rachel was so cute and so young. And the crying competition between the two of them was hilarious. But when Rachel dropped to the floor it was a spectacular shit-show.
The later seasons were just as messy. Britney was a drugged-up zombie who would barely speak more than three syllables. She was like Vicky from Small Wonder.
And then Demi Lovato came on with such a cunty attitude and seemed threatened by any woman on the show. Its messiness was part of its charm.
Steve did a fine job though. Mario and Khloe were horrible.

Americans don't like to many Brits on American television. The accents can be way to much, especially in the morning. Which is why they aren't on morning television here in America.

Why do so many Brits come to America? Is the UK not enough success for them? I don't get it. Why are they always coming over here to try and invade our markets?
America is a tough market to crack, Especially for foreigners. I guess that's why so many go back home to the UK. It's the accents that get on my nerves. They come over and you have to hear their accents, we faught a war to be done with the Brits, and here they are constantly coming over here trying to take over our country. They've done enough damage to the world.
And I say all of this knowing America isn't perfect either. But I really do wish the Brits would stop coming here. The Same with Canadians, and Australians. I don't like seeing them on my TV.

The fact is that TV presenters in the UK have a much more limited selection of work, although we have digital/cable channels the majority of them do not have 'big name' presenters, we only have 5 main TV channels and 2 of those are BBC channels. Even the top BBC presenters are usually only on about £1m a year. Plus, unlike most UK TV shows, US TV shows have a far more global audience, which means more earning potential in terms of book deals, endorsements, adverts etc.
The UK is completely mystified as to why James Corden has become successful in the US by the way. Generally he is hated here, and the only good thing he ever did was a BBC comedy called Gavin & Stacy which I don't think ever took off in the US.

Why are they paid so little in the UK, while in America it's not unheard of for our news anchors, talk show hosts and television personalities to make insane amounts of money. You have late night TV hosts making as much as $15-$30M per salaries. And take Oprah Winfrey who was making $315M a year from her syndicated talk show.
As well as morning tv hosts making as much as $12-$25M a year in salaries for hosting these shows. I guess those types of salaries are out of the question in the UK. I not even going to get started on what American film Stars and TV Stars make per picture/episode if their in a really successful position in their careers.
I guess America is their best bet for making huge money in entertainment and media. But I still don't like hearing the accents on American television and I'm not the only who feels this way. They just seem way out of sink with the rest of the country on American television. I think that's why so many do so poorly in America. Australians and Brits specially. They seem to only be able to be taken in small doses, and not all at once.

I wonder why Cowell felt the need to try and bring all of these Brits over to America for the American version of Xfactor? There's plenty of American hosts who would've been perfect. It eventually ended up being American hosts who hosted the show anyway. But still.
A Brit bringing more Brits to America to try and take over our markets. Is never going to work. There's only but so much Americans will allow foreigners to do in this country. Especially Brits.

That's not true. Brit actors are all over American TV shows and movies.

R123 I don't understand why they have to come here. They come here and take from people who are born and raised in America, and who have history here going back centuries. And the Brits just swoop in and try to take over.
Fuck them.

This is our country. The founders did not want Brits in our lives, America was founded to be rid of the fucking Brits.

R134 I can go wherever I want in America. But you'd be happy to here that I don't live in NYC, and I actually love my hometown where I live right now.
NYC is going to shit anyway.
