This is wrong. She mostly spoke to people of average means who were usually trying to spend money they didn’t have and live beyond their means. She would assess whether there was a reasonable way they could afford what they wanted to buy, or whether they should forget about it.

by Anonymous | reply 40 | March 11, 2020 5:14 AM |
I'm amazed people put up with all this nonsense - the rich are now SO rich and the poor so poor.
You read "tweets" from super-rich cunts like Cher bitching about Trump. Why don't they DO SOMETHING for America's poor. There are thousands of people living and shitting on the streets in her town and all she and people like her do is keep adding to their millions...and people on DL and everywhere saying how fabulous she is cos GEE! she "looks so young".
by Anonymous | reply 41 | March 11, 2020 5:35 AM |
To her credit, she seemed to have a few good points (poorly expressed and wrapped in mantric bombast), among them: 1.) credit card debt will keep too many people poor forever and prevent them from building the least bit of wealth or cushion against disaster; 2.) buy what you can afford.
The good points were good points, if poorly expressed. But so much of her act was a scramble of scold and self-hype and the inability to listen and respond in a focused way. She jumped like a meth head from bullet point to bullet point on her 36 point (chapter) plan when someone would ask a tightly focused question, showing off, heaping scorn, shilling her book, her plan, her audio CDs ...
Americans lap up enthusiasm over substance, and she was certainly all that.

Buy the dip?? More like catch a falling knife! If she was really so smart she'd know we're currently coming off of the largest stock market bubble in US history. That won't end well! This market still has a loooong ways to fall before equities are fairly valued again. But who are we kidding? I still remember her telling a woman on her show to go ahead and buy that house in Orange County in 2006 right before the housing bubble burst! She said he didn't foresee home prices in SoCal ever going down because it was such a desirable place to live. Oops! I often wonder if that caller ended up losing her ass.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | March 11, 2020 11:36 AM |
R38 what she was saying is that is what you should have $3500 as a minimum which is good advice. Not that you are a failure if you don’t have it. If you can put away $5 a week or whatever you’ll get there eventually. There is no other way apart from saving if you are living in poverty except for winning the lottery or inheriting. You have to accumulate capital, however slowly.

She has NEVER put a specific dollar amount on what you should save. She says that you should strive for an 8 month emergency fund. Sure that sounds tough for many--but those same people don't think twice about buying an iPhone, a flat screen TV, and taking a trip to Disney
by Anonymous | reply 47 | March 11, 2020 12:44 PM |
The great points I learned from her:
1. Save 8 month emergency fund
2. Save 15% of your salary and put it in the stock market via a 401k and/or Roth IRA for retirement
3. Get a living revocable trust/will/Power of attorney/Health care proxy
4. Stop buying stupid shit

r38 - I find people who say they are living paycheck to paycheck and cannot save money (not all of them mind you) just are not trying. I have a cousin who is a black sheep. She is a nare do well works a menial job and is always complaining about money. I agreed to help her out by looking at her income and expenses and try and work out a budget so she can save. She works 40 - 50 hours a week and makes 30K a year. Once we counted up her fixed expenses, rent, utilities etc we started to look at her spending. She was paying for a home telephone line and a cell phone and her cell phone bill was 120 dollars a month. Why? She was financing a new iphone and paying for the premium data plan. She had an over 200 dollar a month cable bill. SHe had netflix and amazon prime. By the time I was done cutting her to the bone we figured out she could pay off her credit card debt in a year and save 2000.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | March 11, 2020 3:26 PM |
So literally tens of millions of people are buying the newest iphones? Get real, some people are bad money mangers but not the millions we have. It is the shit jobs that do not pay anything. So there is full employment now, those are flipping burger jobs or retail at JC Pennney. Fuck all you judgemental bitches.

Suze's advice was mainly for the middle class. Her main message was stop buying and save, particularly for retirement.
Why blame her if you're so stupid as to no be able to put two nickles together?
by Anonymous | reply 55 | March 11, 2020 5:30 PM |
i found her entertaining, but then again? she expected people to have 6 to 8 months of a emergency savings account, a savings account by itself and hundreds of thousands of dollars saved up by the time your 30, 40, 50, 60 and nearly as much in your 401k (if you even have that of course)... who in the world has all of this? no one i know!
the things i did agree with her was 1) 3 years paying off a car, if it takes you longer to pay off your car you can't afford that car and 2) you should put at least 20% down on any home/condo your buying.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | March 11, 2020 5:38 PM |
She doesn’t expect anything to have anything. She’s telling you what you should strive to put away so that you’re not fucked when you’re older.
Per the earlier posters, many people could do doing better if they listened and used their heads. There is no reason that almost anyone should not have an emergency reserve of some amount.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | March 11, 2020 5:44 PM |
R57... sure,a little nest egg of a emergency reserve, however, she stated 6 to 8 months worth of living expenses as a emergency fund amount, it's one thing to have maybe 5 to 10 thousand in a emergencyf und, it's quite another to have 30, 40, 50, 60 thousand or so in said fund, and along with this then a savings account of large amounts, plus hundreds of thousands of dollars saved up, hundreds of thousands of dollars in a 401 k and so on and so on...
at my age, 50, i'm suppose to have 30 to 40 thousand in a emergency fund, 500 thousand in savings, 500 thousand in a 401 k, another savings account and checking account and so on? perhaps she is right, but I AND NO ONE I KNOW has anything like this...
no one has this and can and does she expect that we should and we could if we did things "right".?.. don't see how if the average american makes 50 to 60 thousand a year...
by Anonymous | reply 58 | March 11, 2020 5:56 PM |

She spoke to people wanting to improve their finances on a rudimentary level.
There are plenty of conscientious minimum/low wage workers who crave that advice but rightfully feel the financial investment world only speaks to those who make $250,000+.
For those who were interested, her advice was solid.
But a lot of people don't want to hear live within your means, don't buy stupid shit, credit card debt will ensure your cycle of financial woes, etc.
It's easier to say the system's rigged than dig deep and take the high road of being responsible for your finances. That's what a lot of her proponents liked about her, she resonated with folks who were done with all the excuses.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | March 11, 2020 9:44 PM |
R46 and R53 nailed it spot on. For every minimum wage-earning single mother with a baby whose car broke down and then develops serious medical issues, there are many lazy and stupid and none-the-wiser schmucks out there wasting precious money on truly stupid shit.
Movies for example. The last time I went to a theater was 3 years ago. Filled with all the fat poors with their 6 kids and easily $50 in popcorn, nachos, and soda. Easily $200 in our major West Coast city when a Netflix subscription costs $15.
Frapuccinos etc. When was the last time you saw a healthy affluent person drinking one of these? Nope, always some plump clerical desk jockey who always has some at 10am or 3pm. Easily $5 a day / $25 a week / $100 a month.
Black Friday/Cyber Monday. Again, when was the last time you saw an affluent person engaging in such blind consumerism for cheap trinkets made in the land that gave us the Coronavirus?
But of course the system is rigged.

so a 6 to 8 month emergency fund would be what anywhere between 24 thousand up to 40 thousand or so and that is JUST a emergency fund! Orman says everyone should have this, PLUS a regular savings account and checking account, PLUS a separate retirement savings account, PLUS a 401k... and depending on the age, this all numbering into the HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS!... who has this all on the average american salary? it would be difficult very much so even if someone was single much less married and with kids...

That's HOUSEHOLD income, R79. The poster I quoted said the average American makes $50-60k which is not true. And I think Suze means you need to have eight months of living expenses in an emergency fund, not eight months of salary. At least that's the way I always interpreted it.

In our 20s, my husband and I drove Ford Escorts and rented movies instead of going out, much to the bemusement of our Thunderbird-driving, free-wheeling friends who constantly made fun of us. We all made about the same money.
Fast forward 30 years. Those friends are no longer laughing at us.

Suze Orman’s advice allows me to pay off over $100k in student loans, and buy my first apartment.
It’s basically stop spending and make educated choices when you do.
She showed up exactly when I started to make money and had no idea what to do with it. Now I have an emergency fund and a substantial retirement account.
The best part is I’m no longer afraid of money. I know exactly what to do with it.

She slurping pussy juice like an alcoholic chugs vodka.
She doesn't have time to appear in public anymore.

The only one who ever got rich on her advice...is her.

She's addicted to being famous. I think she even admits this.

R93, she deserves every penny of what she’s earned.
Her advice isn’t about getting rich. It’s about how not to be poor

Suze Orman saved my dad’s retirement money.
My dad retired pretty late (at age 78) a few years back. As the responsible child, I was in charge of his money.
Hearing Suze in my head, I converted his 401k to a Roth Roll Over and didn’t invest. It’s about $300k and Suze’s voice said it’s his retirement money; don’t play the market with it.
Everyone was telling me it should be put into stocks. I knew that there some a time at which one must stop gambling with retirement and enjoy what you’ve saved.
Looking at the dismal market today, I’m so glad I kept everything out of the market.
Thank you Suze

That's extremely common knowledge is it not, R96?

I liked Suze until her debit card scam. That was fucking inexcusable. Many many links available.

[quote]They work in restaurants and retail and fast food
These types of jobs are intended for students, stay-at-home moms, and retired people. They are not careers. If you expect to make more than minimum wage your whole life, then learn some skills.

[quote]anyone with an normal IQ or just a head can clearly see OctoMom is mentally ill. She of course didn't follow Suze orders and Hell ensued as Suze sat there screaming at her like she was a dog. I'm not defending OM at all, but no one deserves to be treated like that especially if they have mental issues
Someone who is "clearly" mentally ill and unable to manage her finances, should not have EIGHT fucking kids. I can understand why Suze was irritated as fuck.

If you don't make any money, then you can't afford to buy anything. DE-NIED!

R97, you’d be surprise at how it isn’t common knowledge—especially when these let was in an upswing

R98, it seems to be Bancorp’s issue, not particular Suze Orman’s. Her advice remains fine

She’s on PBS right now. Apparently I had no plans tonight.

She knew what it was when she put her name on it and went on her publicity tour to promote it. Whether or not she gives sound financial advice is debatable but their should be zero argument on whether she ripped off the people who trusted her with that debit card.

Is Suze the patron saint of Karens?
by Anonymous | reply 106 | March 15, 2020 6:27 AM |
R105, the card was a massive flop so no one was harmed

She has a PBS special going on now about her new book on retirement.
love seeing her back on TV. Looks amazing for 68!

She took her $100 million and moved to the Bahamas

The Kardashians also had some kind of pre-paid debit card scam, about a decade ago. So Suze Orman isn't the only one duping her fans.

Yes indeed, we too use "cookies." Take a look at our privacy/terms or if you just want to see the damn site without all this bureaucratic nonsense, click ACCEPT. Otherwise, you'll just have to find some other site for your pointless bitchery needs.
