I was fortunate to fly on UAL's 747 flight to/from Asia a few times a year from 1990 to the last flight to HKG in 2017. Upper deck, exit row was my favorite seat. Usually just 24 seats, 2 washrooms, and 2-3 flight attendants. The airline typically would not put passengers with children upstairs so it was very peaceful. If you couldn't upgrade to first class (back when they had 3 classes of service), flying on the upper deck was the next best thing.

I was a kid when the 747s first came out, and there was tons of publicity. I got a model 747 by sending in a few Cheerio’s box tops.

[R4], I was thinking that exact thought! I had one as well.

Interesting. Funny how that plane is basically still in use today. The first 50 years of airplane design changed tremendously; but these past 50 years, barely any changes.

Both icons of our time. PanAm as a truly global airline of its time and the gorgeous 747.

In my opinion nothing has come close to the “jumbo jet” in terms of design. It’s such a graceful looking bird despite its size.

Sad when PanAm ceased ops and sad to see the 747 slowly disappearing from our skies.

I flew in one of El Als first 747 back in 1971...it was an amazing plane. Too bad it was a beast on fuel. I'm so sick of sitting on top of someone on a 3 737 I stopped traveling.
