John Candy died 26 years ago today

My favorite comedy actor since I first saw him on SCTV when I was a kid.

I still wonder what his career would be like if he were alive.

I loved John Candy, but my guess is that he would have somehow been caught up in the MeToo movement. At least now he can remain perfect in our eyes.

by Anonymousreply 1March 4, 2020 6:06 PM

It's sad he never got the recognition he deserved playing straight roles. He was wonderful in his more dramatic moments in "Uncle Buck" and "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles", and he was incredible in "JFK".

by Anonymousreply 2March 4, 2020 6:07 PM

He was fabulous and I wish more people knew about VOLUNTEERS, which I greatly love:

I liked him very much and was genuinely sad when he died . I cant believe its been 26 years !

We were also talking about HEAVY METAL's Den on the "Most fuckable male cartoon character" thread.

Did you know John Candy voiced the character of Den?

Sorry, here's a better link for John Candy's "Den."
It's sad he never got the recognition he deserved playing straight roles.

Wait, he was gay?

by Anonymousreply 7March 4, 2020 6:29 PM

"Straight"meaning "dramatic roles." Right, r2? "Straight-laced" roles rather than the wacky comedy roles Candy was known for.

by Anonymousreply 8March 4, 2020 6:34 PM

I get the feeling R8 is new to Datalounge.

He said that after Wagons East he anted to take a break from acting and move into directing. He directed the TV movie "Hostage For A Day" which was fun but is rarely seen today.

by Anonymousreply 9March 4, 2020 6:36 PM

Maureen O'Hara was his costar in 'Only the Lonely', and she said he was incredibly talented.

by Anonymousreply 10March 4, 2020 6:41 PM

One of my favorites:

Didn't he own a Canadian football team? I remember seeing a doc on his life. I have to find that again and re-watch. He made me cry at the end of Trains, Planes. And it wasn't the scene when Steve Martin comes back to the station to find him sitting alone. It's at the very end when he meets SM's whole family in the foyer. His eyes - as he takes it all in - are heartbreaking.

by Anonymousreply 12March 4, 2020 6:44 PM

“Orange Whip?” is still a punchline for my family around the holidays.

I get the feeling r9 is new to show business terminology and written context.

Why doesn't r2 clarify that "straight"meant "dramatic roles,"not "heterosexual roles?" And why doesn't r7 or r9 realize that John Candy never played any gay roles?

by Anonymousreply 14March 4, 2020 7:41 PM

Plains, Trains and Automobiles is a comedy.

by Anonymousreply 15March 4, 2020 7:46 PM

I loved him and I loved Chris Barley. I don't think they had much in common?

by Anonymousreply 16March 4, 2020 7:49 PM

Good comedies have drama in them.

by Anonymousreply 17March 4, 2020 7:53 PM

R10 O'Hara actually came out of retirement after meeting with Candy and agreed to do the film because of him. In an interview he said meeting her was the first time he was ever star struck.

by Anonymousreply 18March 4, 2020 8:14 PM

R14 clearly you're new to DL or you would have realized R7's signature is a classic Datalounge persona when asking dumb questions.

by Anonymousreply 19March 4, 2020 8:17 PM

He's one of the few celebrities that nothing bad has been said about. Martin Short, when asked about his friend John Candy, said this of him: "He was adored." He was very talented, could do both comedic and serious roles. His death was a great loss. But anyone that size is not destined to live a long life.

by Anonymousreply 20March 4, 2020 8:25 PM

Honestly, he was about the same size as a huge amount of Americans are now. He'd only be considered a mid-fat (on the scale of small-fat, mid-fat, large-fat, death-fat and infini-fat, as the Fat Acceptance movement defines it).

by Anonymousreply 21March 5, 2020 12:12 AM

"Honestly, he was about the same size as a huge amount of Americans are now. He'd only be considered a mid-fat (on the scale of small-fat, mid-fat, large-fat, death-fat and infini-fat, as the Fat Acceptance movement defines it)."

Oh, come on. He weighed at least 300 pounds when he died. He was morbidly obese.

by Anonymousreply 22March 5, 2020 12:40 AM

He was always ugly

by Anonymousreply 23March 5, 2020 12:46 AM

Yes, but about 25% of Americans are 300 pounds and up these days. It's a fast growing population.

by Anonymousreply 24March 5, 2020 1:17 AM

He got shower curtain rings as earrings trending back in the day.

by Anonymousreply 25March 5, 2020 1:28 AM

"Yes, but about 25% of Americans are 300 pounds and up these days. It's a fast growing population."

Where did you get that statistic from? It sounds rather overinflated.

by Anonymousreply 26March 5, 2020 1:30 AM
He was always ugly

No he wasn’t, you fucking liar. He was big but he wasn’t ugly. He was like one of those fat guys who can always get laid whenever they want cause they’ve got a nice face and charming personality.

OP’s got me wanting to watch Uncle Buck, but whenever I see John waving in that last shot I want to burst into tears.

by Anonymousreply 28March 5, 2020 1:37 AM

I feel guilty for laughing at this.

I generally despise John Hughes movies but I loved 'Planes, Trains, and Automobiles." It was so funny and John Candy and Steve Martin were perfect in it. I liked "Uncle Buck", too. The only John Hughes movies I liked had John Candy in them.

by Anonymousreply 30March 5, 2020 1:52 AM

Why feel guilty exactly?

by Anonymousreply 31March 5, 2020 1:52 AM

Homophobia should not be funny.

by Anonymousreply 32March 5, 2020 1:55 AM

Was that scene homophobic? I have seen similar on Will and Grace,

by Anonymousreply 33March 5, 2020 2:06 AM

He died but the reason was covered up.

John Candy died a very mysterious death in Durango, Mexico. While he was working on the movie Wagons West! it was reported that he died of an apparent heart attack.

Adding to the mystery was the fact that right before he died he sold his interest in the Toronto Argonauts, worth millions. So he had plenty of money with which to assume a new identity and leave his life as a failing actor before he became a footnote in the annals of Hollywood.

An official autopsy was never performed, and circumstances were setup to implicate that John had a heart attack.

But it seems that he tipped off some people that he was going to disappear in Mexico, and his “funeral” was attended by many of his comedian friends, and Dan Aykroyd — his business partner — gave the eulogy.

No doubt Dan and John Candy’s other friends had the last laugh at a private get together after the sham funeral.

by Anonymousreply 34March 5, 2020 2:57 AM

He wouldn't desert his wife and kids.

by Anonymousreply 35March 5, 2020 3:33 AM

So a world famous 6’3 300 pound white man just disappeared into Mexico. Totally believable, R34.

by Anonymousreply 36March 5, 2020 3:36 AM

Yeah because he couldn't have lost weight. You're racism is showing badly r36

by Anonymousreply 37March 5, 2020 3:52 AM

I remember a funny story some DLer once told, about some frau at his workplace who started crying so inconsolably when she heard Candy was dead that she had to be sent home.

by Anonymousreply 38March 5, 2020 4:08 AM

The most genius SCTV casting of all time was John Candy as Hope Emerson in "Broads behind Bars" (with Catherine O'Hara as Eleanor Parker!).

It's a shame the SCTV reunion, which was filmed in May 2018, seems to have been vetoed. One of the best moments was a lengthy tribute to John Candy, including his children, who were in the audience. I can't for the life of me understand why it's been almost two years and nothing.

by Anonymousreply 40March 5, 2020 4:18 AM

What i especially love about John Candy's Hope Emerson impersonation is that he actually [italic]deepens[/italic] his voice to portray her!

I don’t usually remember where I was when I hear that random celebrities have died but I do distinctly remember learning that John Candy had was dead when I walked into Video Vault (now gone amazing video store in Alexandria, VA) and seeing they’d written RIP John Candy or something on a chalkboard easel by the entrance. Hard to believe a quarter of a century has passed since then. Another memory I have of him is the that I really hated the movie Uncle Buck.
