Coronavirus Freakout 10: Stayin’ Alive!

Continue to pretend that everything is normal.

Don’t post photos of your stash online.

Quietly let close family know that they should be preparing, and that you only have enough for your immediate family.

Make sure you have enough to help the people that ignore your advice.

Prepare to read all those books in the corner you’ve been ignoring. Quarantine is boring.

Thank your creator you live in Flyoverstan, or curse Him if you live in Cali.

Don’t actually freak out, just prepare yourself for a major disruption in daily life.

Keep Calm and, uh, Carry On!

Oddly, for a respiratory illness, an anal swab is apparently more accurate than a throat swab for detecting the virus. I don't know if that's relevant to your question R12, but there you go.

It was mild alarm until Italy, now it’s telecommute.

I don’t have to be there except for appearances, so the morning “I’m sick so I’ll just listen in” bullshit can be done.

Everyone knows I’m “slightly concerned” but don’t know anything concrete, so a few days working from home is chill. I’m just pissed off that nobody took it seriously a month ago.

Here in Australia our latest cases are citizens returning from Iran who go on to feel unwell and then test positive. We were quick to close borders to people from Hubei Province but I think this Iranian and Italian angle has not been adequately addressed at the airports. Passengers from at least 2 flights in the last week from Doha to Sydney via Qatar airlines have been alerted.

I feel afraid. Why? you might ask, citing the relatively low illness/death rate. I feel afraid because I am in the red zone for this particular form of the Grim Reaper and I suspect quite a few of us here at DL fall into the vulnerable group. My only consolation is that Australia was going to crap out at Eurovision this year and this virus is a very welcome diversion from our horrendous selection.

by Anonymousreply 21March 2, 2020 3:31 AM

[quote]Do you know that if there are now 88 cases here in the U.S

This after six weeks of faulty and simply non-existent testing. Expect the numbers to explode once we have reliable testing. Within two weeks, the US will able to test nearly 20,000 samples a day. The fact that they're gearing up for that kind of volume should be of significant concern to anyone paying attention.

That sucks. Glad you’re venting to the void instead of keeping it inside all the time.

The economic impact is scary. No idea how any company handles something like this without scaring all the employees. It’s such a seemingly unlikely probability that preparing for it would be so expensive the companies choose to write it off as unworthy of hedging.

My neighbor owns a restaurant and I have kept my mouth shut. Service industry will be hit hard if this gets much bigger in the USA.

Apparently “This Is Not A Test” is just placating us instead of actually creating redundancy.

Went to the grocery store to night and saw the first signs of panic. 3 couples (30ish) were pooling their efforts. One guy, who was 6'5" and 250 was downright freaked out and aggressive with the staff. Glad I'm not quarantined with him.

by Anonymousreply 28March 2, 2020 4:05 AM

Im just reading the news alert about the second US death, a 70 year old. I think TPTB need to just come out and say the people who are most at risk are seniors and people with compromised respiratory systems from health conditions and smoking. That will help ease some of concern before this thing causes absolute hysteria.

by Anonymousreply 30March 2, 2020 4:11 AM

CNN-89 coronavirus patients have been identified in the United States

A total of 89 cases of the novel coronavirus have been reported in the United States, as of Sunday night Eastern time. Two have been killed by the virus, both in Washington state.

44 passengers repatriated from the Diamond Princess cruise ship in Japan.

3 repatriated from Wuhan, China, the epicenter of the outbreak.

42 who were detected and tested on US soil:

19 travel-related

19 person-to-person

4 undetermined (1 in Illinois, 1 in California and 2 in Washington)

by Anonymousreply 40March 2, 2020 4:36 AM

I wouldn't be surprised to found out the virus had reached the states in January, with the Lunar New Year travellers, and has been spreading ever since. It does supposedly have a long incubation period, and a certain percentage of people appear to not show symptoms.

R16, 2 people are dead, so that’s accurate.

I couldn’t post on the last thread for some reason, it kept crashing, but here’s a link I wanted to show you guys. A man was in quarantine because his wife’s father had Coronavirus. After fourteen days, the CDC let him go even though he has obvious symptoms of illness. He goes on Fox in their studio, and drinks out of his little daughter’s water.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 51March 2, 2020 5:48 AM

Well, here's one way to look at it: if we believe the death tolls that have been reported, but the virus has actually been circulating in the general population since December, then the death rate in % terms is actually much LOWER than it is if calculated on just the number of people tested and confirmed to have the virus. I could of course be completely wrong but think this has been around for a while and in most cases people just think they had a bad cold or "flu-like" illness. It's only when it progresses to pneumonia that it's serious.

by Anonymousreply 52March 2, 2020 5:50 AM

If it progressed to pneumonia in people with undiagnosed Coronavirus, then the cause of death would have simply been listed as pneumonia, R52.

That's what they were doing in Wuhan, people were dying pneumonia brought on by Coronavirus and they just called it pneumonia.

by Anonymousreply 53March 2, 2020 5:53 AM

Yes, R53. So deaths from pneumonia spiked in the US? I don't know but haven't heard that. Point being that if this virus has actually been sickening people in the US since Dec (which seems completely believable to me) and pneumonia deaths didn't spike, that is a good sign.

by Anonymousreply 54March 2, 2020 5:58 AM

R51 is just out of this world insane.

by Anonymousreply 55March 2, 2020 6:02 AM

by Anonymousreply 62March 2, 2020 6:12 AM

I’m really sorry to hear that, R25. Feel free to vent. I’ve had some issues with crazy family myself, so I know how it is about crazy stuff happening and people look at you sideways, like you did something to cause crazy people to go off. After a lot of years of this stuff, I can tell you, if somebody goes off on you like that, it’s not you, it’s them. Sane people don’t do crazy things no matter what you do or how irritated they are with you. A sane person would just quit talking to you, or break up with you, if it was your fault. It took me many years to realize you can’t control that some people react unreasonably to stress. Don’t blame yourself, just punch and delete. That person will be like that whether you’re around or not, so just stay away. Your mental state has a lot to do with your immune system, so if you’re still distressed about this, seek therapy, meditate, or exercise.

About recovery from pneumonia, my lungs are shit and I’ve had it several times. I’ve also had chronic bronchitis a lot. Here’s my experience: it took about a year total to quit feeling tired and feel totally recovered. If it’s taking you a long time to feel strong and healthy and energetic, don’t feel bad, that can be normal depending on the individual. It doesn’t necessarily mean your lungs are still bad.

Some things you can do that helped me: take a lot of vitamin C. Emergen-C would probably help. I was taking about 1000 mg a day of vitamin C. Get something like Cold Eez, which has zinc in it and can boost your immune system. Don’t take them every day forever, you can overdo the zinc. Just take one if you’re feeling like you’re on the verge of getting a cold, or feel like your immune system is down. It gives you a boost. I’ve taken them at the first signs of getting a cold and the next day I’m better.

Above all, take vitamin D3. Take the pills, but the best way is to go outside in the sun as many hours as you can with some of your skin uncovered. If you can walk in the sun that’s the best. Your lungs drain if you’re upright, and walking or vigorous exercise, like biking, will help you. I got bronchitis so many times I became antibiotic resistant, and they didn’t really help. The only thing that worked was walking outside in the sun all day Saturday and Sunday for a few weeks. Like eight hours a day, just walking. You can do it on hiking trails or somewhere where there aren’t a lot of people. Even in the suburbs, not many people walk in the street, so just walking around neighborhoods, you’re not likely to meet many people. Especially on a bike.

Another thing to do right now is take the flu shot and get the pneumonia shot. They normally won’t give the pneumonia shot if you’re under 65, but if you’re high risk they will. I’ve gotten them at Costco by telling them I had a previous history of lung issues. The last thing you want is to get it again, and getting the shot will make you feel more confident.

R21 Australia is not handling it well at all. Being an island we are in a position to reduce the number of people coming into the country.

All citizens returning from holiday (regardless of where they came from) should be placed into quarantine on Christmas Island or Darwin for 21 days. All citizens on overseas holidays should be advised to get their asses back here ASAP or they may not be able to if the situation deteriorates even worse.

No Foreign residents allowed into the country - effective in 48 hours from announcement.

We can still get freight planes and cargo ships in but with the strictest of controls.

This 'we can't close our borders' nonsense coming from the Chief Medical Officer Brendan Murphy is unacceptable.

Still I wouldn't be surprised if the Government backflips on that as things worse but by then it may be too late.

Also read an interesting article yesterday about how Chinese tourists in Bali are trying to get visas to enter Australia because they are too afraid to return to China which I can fully understand. However, we should not be granting any of those people visas as we don't know how wide spread the virus is in Indonesia.

Australia has been extending the visas of Chinese residents who were on holiday from China in Australia and that I agree with - none of them have the virus and if they did the would have been long sick.

Australia & New Zealand need to greatly restrict access to their borders NOW. Ditto all the Pacific Islands. The economy loss is nothing compared to the human loss and even worse economy losses that will come if we don't.

As of 4 days ago only 450 people had been tested because the initial production of test kits were recalled because if a "lab glitch ".

We're in the dark as to how many people are infected because we really haven't been testing.

Plus the private for profit hospitals will be wondering who's going to pay for all this.

South Korea had already tested 40,000 people three weeks ago.

All that work stoppage, would that lead to massive unemployment and a breakdown of society? Hungry people, mourning people, broke people, people losing their houses, etc. They can be desperate.

I think it’s inevitable that the virus runs out of control, and maybe the government knows a little more than we do. Such as, maybe it indeed has been around for 6 weeks undetected. Or something else that makes it unstoppable. Maybe they can’t reveal that all now and are waiting until it doesn’t make a difference anymore.

For people that don’t have much experience prepping, here’s some products that are good for storage. Yes you can put tuna under the bed. Get one of those plastic under-the-bed storage containers.

Kirkland (Costco brand) tuna or canned beef or salmon. Long shelf life. PB2: dehydrated peanut butter powder. Ghee: Costco carries a large peanut butter jar size. This is shelf stable butter. Jellies: get a large one and a couple of small ones. Tuesday Morning and Big Lots have some variety.

Bear Creek dehydrated soups, Big Lots and other stores. High sodium. Olive oil, shelf stable. Canned butter cookies, like Christmas cookies. They’re good for a year in an unopened can. Get tea in a can too. Or buy a tin separately and put the tea inside, it will last longer. Plain chocolate bars: flat and easy to store, not much room. Plain can be used for baking or hot chocolate. Hot chocolate mix, Nesquick or Ovaltine. Evaporated canned or powdered milk don’t always taste great. Gatorade powder doesn’t take up much room, but they’re giving patients Gatorade to replenish minerals. There’s a low sugar version and “Gatorade Zero.” Get a gallon or quart bottle or jug to make instant drinks.

Most dehydrated foods or drinks taste better if they sit in the fridge. Ideally, four hours or more for dehydrated foods.

Rice and beans: if you have room, get an Instant Pot. If you can’t afford it, check out thrift shops for crock pots, rice cookers or other appliances. Often they’re never used or used once. You can download the instruction booklets online if they’re lost.

Dehydrated mashed potatoes, grits, oatmeal, Malt O Meal (lots of iron). All prone to bugs, so re-bag them in ziplock bags and freeze at least three days, then put them in glass canning jars. Use the metal lids, they’re much more airtight. Canning jar glass is much thicker glass than old jam jars and less prone to breakage. Also microwaveable. Leave the lid off.

Spices and sauces. Brown gravy mix, Cholula or Valentina Mexican hot sauce, Cajun hot sauce, soy sauce etc. For breakfast cereal, cinnamon and raisins with shelf stable soy milk or powdered milk. For chili, cumin, chili powder, for curry, curry powder. Bay leaves and Italian seasoning for Italian food. If you’re storing pasta or grains, put bay leaves loose in the container, it’s a bug repellent. Buy a 4 lb box of salt, never goes bad, and you can use it to wash dishes if you run out of dish soap. Honey lasts forever and never requires refrigeration. Get a good grade, pure honey. Cheap honey has corn syrup and can spoil.

Pancake mix and pancake syrup, lower sodium Spam. Lasts forever and is great with eggs, rice or grits. Rice - for long term storage get white rice. Lasts two years or more. Freeze at least three days using above method. Crackers last a year. Tortillas can be frozen. Canned beans, black beans are the most versatile. Get no salt version. Dry beans.

If you have little money or storage space: a large bag of dried black beans or two 25 lb bags of black beans and pinto beans or red beans, large bag of rice, ghee or butter, olive oil, canned tuna and peanut butter and jelly and crackers. Tortillas, hot sauce and soy sauce. And some type of milk product, dehydrated or shelf stable and cold or hot cereal. Fill in with canned fruit and vegetables. Get no salt canned food every time you can. Chocolate. And get lots of water and Gatorade or their dry mix. Canned, bottled or frozen fruit juice concentrate.

by Anonymousreply 74March 2, 2020 7:46 AM

Were you doomsday types around for swine flu in 2009?

It had a much higher mortality rate, and more severe symptoms for anyone who caught it - one being a whooping cough that sounded pretty alarming. Once the virus was popping up in different places, they stopped closing schools and banning events, declared it to be 'in the community' and forgot about it.

People in the US have way more chance of being shot and killed walking down the street than they do of being infected with corona, let alone dying of it.

by Anonymousreply 75March 2, 2020 7:51 AM

'amazing that Africa is lagging in #s. i’ve read that maybe their ecosystem is not favorable to the virus'

You're naive. Most won't go near a doctor and pay the fee unless they're close to dying or in terrible pain. Flu like symptoms will be shrugged off. Anyone over 50 suddenly expiring will be viewed as a good death from old age, considering life expectancy in many African countries is 40 or less.

by Anonymousreply 76March 2, 2020 7:56 AM

R73, I don’t know about other countries, but the U. S. has a really inefficient distribution system. There’s very little redundancy and a lot of our products are made in China and food is very often either packaged or assembled in China or has Chinese made packaging. That goes for meds too. The fact that bottles, jars and cans are almost all made in China alone could cause a bottleneck in food production.

People in the U.S. have more to fear from a breakdown in the food distribution system than the virus. I read that 85% of manufacturing in China was down a couple of weeks ago. They did try to bring workers back to one factory, then one of them was found to have the virus and the whole factory had to be quarantined. That’s what’s going to happen if they try to come back too soon.

The number of people that get the virus will hopefully be fairly small. The number of people that eat food that is mass produced is almost everyone.

by Anonymousreply 77March 2, 2020 7:57 AM

R74 Most of Africa will continue to do what the US wanted to do until recently: No testing no virus! But the situation in SK/Japan/Italy forced the western media/stock market to panic and that in turn forced the US government to get serious about monitoring for coronavirus cases.

by Anonymousreply 78March 2, 2020 8:08 AM

Time to remind you panicking preppers what happened in the last pandemic, swine flu. It lasted from April 2009 to August 2010, had a 0.8% death rate, similar to corona.

From Wikipedia:

It is estimated that in the 2009 flu pandemic 11–21% of the then global population (of about 6.8 billion), or around 700 million to 1.4 billion people, contracted the illness — more in absolute terms than the Spanish flu pandemic.

However, with about 150,000–575,000 fatalities, it had a much lower case fatality rate. In August 2010, the World Health Organization declared the swine flu pandemic officially over.[4][5]

I remember exactly what happened with this as I was working in a London school. From April to mid July, they tried containment, closing schools and places of work where the virus cropped up. By mid July they declared it was 'in the community' and stopped closing places. They advised anyone with symptoms to stay at home and only to visit a hospital if symptoms became severe.

This is how it will go with Corona too. So forget about the economy crashing and everyone hiding out at home living off tins of beans and biscuits. You'll all have to carry on and live with the prospect of infection and the vanishingly small chance of death.

R80, yep. I was thrilled with swine flu too and was looking forward to my school closing. I like news about extreme weather, forest fires, earthquakes and hurricanes too. None of these affect London, which is boring.

by Anonymousreply 83March 2, 2020 8:31 AM

R80 I was worried that I was a bit of a psycho, because part of me is like that. I'm bored to death with everyday life and sometimes I wish for something, anything to happen. I don't want anyone to get hurt (I don't really care what happens to me), but I enjoy seeing things out of the norm, what are the responses, how people behave. I want to know what is going to happen next.

Right now it looks like the death rate for Corona virus is about 2% or more, not 0.8%. And unfortunately, even now we don’t know the true death rate with any accuracy, almost all the countries are either outright lying or not testing, like the U.S. Only South Korea and a couple others seem to actually have a good handle on accurately reporting numbers. In the case of the U.S., there’s so little testing, we have no idea what’s actually happening

In China, the government is welding people inside their entire apartment buildings. No one has ever done that for any flu, so don’t even try to tell me that’s normal or there’s nothing to be concerned about. Everything they have done is a sign of absolute desperation. Warehousing patients in large rooms with no barriers or medicines, boarding up people’s doors or dragging them out of the house. Not even China normally does that.

The main concern here isn’t the virus itself, it’s the ripple effect of the consequences of the virus. Quarantines meaning no work for many, schools closing meaning parents have to stay home, people avoiding restaurants and public places meaning business suffers. All leading to a recession and high unemployment.

In the U.S., schools are very rarely closed for viruses or flus no matter how bad they are. The fact that the government is even talking about it is highly unusual. Americans get two weeks vacation maximum in most cases and some places don’t pay for sick leave either, or don’t let their employees call in sick even if they have earned time off. Maternity leave is three months including before and after. Many workplaces don’t allow working from home even if it’s possible. Americans just don’t have much paid time off even if you take every kind you can. And many employers pressure their employees not to take it, or fire them for taking it. Closing schools is a no go for that reason, until now at least.

The other thing that’s alarming is Trump is making all the same mistakes China made, only now we know better. Inadequate quarantine procedures, too short quarantines that are voluntary and unsupervised, medical personnel with inadequate protective wear. As a result many caretakers have fallen ill. And many caretakers are now in quarantine, making them unavailable to care for patients. If they are only quarantined for fourteen days, it’s very likely they will go back to work infected and contagious, showing no signs, caring for already very ill hospitalized patients suffering from other illnesses. Same as what happened in China. Nurses will have the opportunity to spread the virus throughout hospitals. Hospitals will become death factories if the quarantine times aren’t lengthened. All this because of Trump’s denial and lack of leadership.

Due to inadequate protective clothing and equipment, by the time this is over a large percentage of medical personnel in China will be unavailable, maybe dead. Thousands of medical personnel are sick. Meanwhile in the U.S., no masks and people have been sent to care for patients with no protective clothing or instructions. And communities near patients are seeing spread because there’s not enough tracking or testing and sick people are wandering the community.

It’s China all over again. Is it preventable? Yes. Is it being prevented? No.

by Anonymousreply 86March 2, 2020 9:28 AM

R79, You need to reread your Wikipedia page. The swine flu had a mortality rate of 0.01-0.08, not 0.8. So far the Coronavirus has an estimated mortality rate between 1 and 2 percent.

So much deadlier, but, like the swine flu, extremely contagious. I'm seeing estimates ranging from 30 to 70 percent of the total population eventually being infected with it. But even if it stays at 11-21 percent like the swine flu you're looking at more than a billion people being infected and, if the mortality rate holds tens of millions of people dying from it--not 500,000.

So worry or don't worry about the coronavirus, but don't fool yourself--all indications are that it's much deadlier than the swine flu, while being as contagious as the common cold.

Millions of tweets peddled conspiracy theories about coronavirus in other countries, an unpublished U.S. report says.

Roughly 2 million tweets peddled conspiracy theories about the coronavirus over the three-week period when the outbreak began to spread outside China, according to an unreleased report from an arm of the State Department, raising fresh fears about Silicon Valley’s preparedness to combat a surge of dangerous disinformation online.

The wrongful, harmful posts floated a number of hoaxes — suggesting, for example, that the coronavirus had been created by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation or was the result of a bioweapon. These and other identified falsehoods represented 7 percent of the total tweets the government studied and were “potentially impactful on the broader social media conversation,” according to the report, which was obtained Saturday by The Washington Post.

Still another hoax said an arm of the Defense Department created the virus and targeted China. Those tweets gained traction with the aid of accounts that appeared to be automated, known as bots, that have tweeted at an unnatural rate in recent weeks, according to the State Department's conclusions.

Simple but sobering observation.

The fact that the CDC says Stop Buying Masks says a lot. They say masks are needed for health care workers and family caregivers of the critically ill. Regular folks won’t need them. Why?

Possibly means

1. they will soon be recommending that we all self isolate so as to lessen the risk we will be in contact with infected individuals (no sporting events, no theatre, and limited air, cruise travel or other close voluntary congregating: e.g. The Louvre was closed), thus no need for masks; and,

2. they’re afraid the Heslth care workers and infected households won’t have enough masks available to meet needs.

IOW, despite isolation, they expect A LOT of people to get critically sick.

A 29-year-old Russian man diagnosed with coronavirus has became the country’s first citizen to be found ill with the disease while inside of the country, The Guardian's Andrew Roth reports from Moscow.

David Berov, who had returned from a ski trip to northern Italy on 23 February and checked into a hospital several days later, had tested positive for the disease, Russian authorities said on Monday. Two tests had returned negative results before a third test showed Berov was indeed infected with the coronavirus.

In a series of videos reposted by Russian media, Berov filmed scenes from his quarantine, where he was being held in a single room with other suspected coronavirus patients.

“When we got there we asked the medical staff why we are all lying together in the same room – any one of us could infect the others,” Berov , an English-language newspaper, by phone from the hospital. Doctors at Moscow’s Infectious Diseases hospital No 1 had later told him not to tell Russian health officials that he had been held in a single room with other suspected coronavirus patients, the paper said.

2. Italian healthcare is one of the best in the world. And, unbelievable, it is 100% for free. No insurance plan, no credit card. Health in Italy is a a primary right for everyone, even for you when visiting this amazing country.

3. Milan is not controlled by the military police, people live, love, walk and work as usual. Our Health Authorities have made the decision of suspending many activities involving large communities, as schools, gyms, movie theatres, concerts JUST to reduce the risk of contamination. We had more or less 300 positive cases only because we carried out the test over almost 9000 people out of 60 million. In the US you had around 20 cases out of 400 tests...it means the incidence in Italy is 3%, in the USA is 5%....but omg, only 400 tests out of 300 million people!!!!

4. The real virus we must take care of is ignorance. Ignorance of other nationalities complaining against Chinese people; ignorance of the press, ignorance of many opinion leaders, ignorance of many politicians.

Spring is close. Summer is not far. Buy a ticket, book a room and come to Italy.

You'll find sun, food, culture and art, as always! "

"The United States military looks at a wide variety of scenarios," Gen. Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said at the Pentagon, adding that "pandemic is the worst case."

"Of course we do all kinds of planning in the department of defense," Milley told reporters, adding that the military labs are working on a vaccine. "With respect to the vaccine, yes, the military labs are working very consistently ... working in direct support with health and human services."

We re-watched Contagion last night. It made me remember that when we saw it in the theater back in the day, after the doctor informed Matt Damon that Gwyneth Paltrow had died, Matt screamed “my wife did not have herpes!” and the whole theater cracked up. It was still funny last night.

So many countries are now affected, I doubt self quarantine after returning from Europe, Asia or the Middle East matters anymore. There're cases now all over Europe, not just Italy. We would have to close all borders and suspend all international travel to contain this and it's probably too late anyway.

CNN-How South Korea is using drive-throughs to test for coronavirus

Here's how it works:

In the northern city of Goyang, drivers pull in to a parking lot.

In the northern city of Goyang, drivers pull in to a parking lot.

Motorists then drive to several stations where nurses in protective plastic suits, masks and face shields register drivers.

They also check their temperatures and use swabs to take samples from their throats and nasal passages.

Officials say it is safer and faster to test for the virus at the drive-through than in a hospital or health clinic.

"There's less face-to-face contact," said Lee Jae-joon, the mayor of Goyang. "If you operate a testing site indoors, there is concern that suspected patients can infect each other in the waiting room."

I talked to a friend who reads 4chan regularly and the rumors going around include

-the virus was created in a lab (I'm guessing this comes from a Young Earther who thinks any organism that wasn't created when God made the world 6000 years ago must be a monster from a lab)

-the virus only affects non-whites (definitely a white supremacist meme)

-it's a cross between a virus and a fungus (which means it travels via spores like the pods in "Invasion of the Body Snatchers")

Keep calm and wash your hands.

Someone in the prior thread posted great tips on how to slow down spread of the virus. It was from Reddit, I may bring it over to re-post. Simple common sense such as no hand-shaking, wearing gloves, washing hands appropriately, sanitizing doorknobs, keyboards, etc. Nothing to actually stop the virus, but great tips what would slow the spread considerably if implemented by EVERYONE.

Which brings me to this: why isn't the US govt putting PSAs out on television, basic and cable, 24/7, encouraging safe practices and behaviors? Running them every hour on the hour, during commercial breaks and in between programming. If everyone would get on board with practicing the same mildly time-consuming behaviors, we'd all perhaps stay healthy long enough for medications or a vaccine to be developed.

by Anonymousreply 180March 2, 2020 4:47 PM

Question: washing your hands is a sound practice, but what about drying them? I use hand towels at home - won't I just re-infect if I keep using those on my hands? Shouldn't we use paper towels to dry off after washing (since most of us don't have fancy hand air dryers at home) and dispose of these properly?

Tldr: will washing my home bath towels and hand cloths in hot water and detergent kill this virus? Or do I need to add bleach to the wash.

and most importantly, COVER YOUR COUGH, COUGH INTO YOUR ELBOW! TURN YOUR HEAD AWAY FROM PEOPLE TO COUGH!

I also make sure I stay far away from people, like 6 feet if possible.

I no longer buy food from salad bars, you don't know who's been coughing nearby...I used to eat from the whole foods salad bar all the time. NO MORE.

R53 No, pneumonia-caused deaths even if listed as such would also be reported to CDC as unspecified/ unusual pathogens. Please don't think that we just treat your acute pneumonia with random meds and therapy without testing for which types of pathogens caused it in the first place. Again, if there was anything novel or unusual it would've been reported to the CDC. So in short, no there have been no PNA-related deaths others than possibly the two known recent deaths due to COVID-19.

It also wouldn't do any good to test people who are sick with flu symptoms for no reason. We pan-any patients who present with flu symptoms anyways, and quite many of them especially those who are medically frail do test (+) for more than one pathogen. The worst thing we can do is to encourage people who have mild cold/ flu symptoms to bombard the hospitals, ER, and urgent care to demand to be tested. Talk about making it easier for pathogenic illnesses to spread, that's one avenue for advanced nations to promote community transmission of infectious illnesses.

Case fatality rate (CFR) measures severity of a disease and is defined as the proportion of reported cases of a specified disease which are fatal within a specified time. CFR of infected individuals ages 30-80 who subsequently developed COVID-19 and had critical illness is 1.2%. CFR of infected individuals ages 70-79 is 8.0%. Ages 80 and older is 14.8%. No deaths ages 9 or younger. No deaths in mild and severe cases, however if patients had critical cases then it’s approximately 49% fatality rate. Severe illness is defined as dyspnea, respiratory rate greater than 30/ minute, O2 saturation less than 93%, lung infiltrate greater than 50% within 24-48 hours, partial pressure of arterial O2 to fraction of inspired O2 ratio of less than 300. Critical illness is defined here as respiratory failure, septic shock, and MODS (multiple organ dysfunction syndrome). If you have critical illness as defined by ay of those sequelae then you're fucked, it doesn't matter virus or no virus.

We've had a few patients tested because they'd not tested positive for any of the pan cultures that were ran. I have a patient who was going to be tested until she tested (+) for a few strains of the flu virus, her immune system compromised due to immunosuppression meds she takes as part of her post- heart transplant regimen. Now she is one of those who are at risk for cytokine storm due to her history of heart transplant and chronic lung disease.

We are constantly being updated and we're concerned but not freaking out. The worst thing to do is to have leadership or experts encouraging people to act upon undue panic. Vigilance born out of rational concern, yes, but mass freak outs, no. I've had family and friends hit me up for N95 masks asking me to steal them from work, and that is insane. Wearing masks give people false sense of security, when the best course of action is to encourage those who are sick to self-quarantine by staying at home.

Of course this epidemic is an ongoing, evolving event and things can change very quickly and for the worse, and as health professionals we have to be prepared for that (without freaking out). I was going to post some daily updates from internal UC updates and protocols a couple of days ago. But I was banned from doing so due to posters on these threads FF'ing my previous posts because I wasn't sufficiently freaked out enough and because I contradicted speculations that are false. So if I don't get to post updates again, I'll just say this: please for the love of humanity, don't go to the hospital if you have mild symptoms or illness because there's nothing that can help anyways besides staying home, hydration and antipyretics. If you don't improve then coordinate being seen at urgent care or ER, call if you can to get directed to either one depending on severity of symptoms.

by Anonymousreply 183March 2, 2020 4:50 PM

R181 If you want to kill pathogens then a mild bleach bath/ wash would be slightly better. As for hand washing and drying, paper towels are better than cloth towels that are reused. For those who use disinfecting hand gels, you can gel up to about 5-6 times before you need to wash your hands again. If you go more than 5-6 times gelling your hands then it loses effectiveness. At least that's what we've been taught in healthcare.

by Anonymousreply 184March 2, 2020 4:54 PM

It seems like executive branch is dragging their feet purposely on info, testing and muzzling federal cdc spokes people as if they want lots of elderly and immune compromised people to die. by Anonymousreply 185March 2, 2020 4:55 PM

R180 Was it this post? I thought it contained a lot of good information too. I copy and pasted it to some family members, so I have it easily on hand:

Subject: What I am doing for the upcoming COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic

Dear Colleagues, as some of you may recall, when I was a professor of pathology at the University of California San Diego, I was one of the first molecular virologists in the world to work on coronaviruses (the 1970s). I was the first to demonstrate the number of genes the virus contained. Since then, I have kept up with the coronavirus field and its multiple clinical transfers into the human population (e.g., SARS, MERS), from different animal sources.

The current projections for its expansion in the US are only probable, due to continued insufficient worldwide data, but it is most likely to be widespread in the US by mid to late March and April.

Here is what I have done and the precautions that I take and will take. These are the same precautions I currently use during our influenza seasons, except for the mask and gloves.:

NO HANDSHAKING! Use a fist bump, slight bow, elbow bump, etc.

Use ONLY your knuckle to touch light switches. elevator buttons, etc.. Lift the gasoline dispenser with a paper towel or use a disposable glove.

Open doors with your closed fist or hip - do not grasp the handle with your hand, unless there is no other way to open the door. Especially important on bathroom and post office/commercial doors.

Use disinfectant wipes at the stores when they are available, including wiping the handle and child seat in grocery carts.

Wash your hands with soap for 10-20 seconds and/or use a greater than 60% alcohol-based hand sanitizer whenever you return home from ANY activity that involves locations where other people have been.

Keep a bottle of sanitizer available at each of your home's entrances. AND in your car for use after getting gas or touching other contaminated objects when you can't immediately wash your hands.

If possible, cough or sneeze into a disposable tissue and discard. Use your elbow only if you have to. The clothing on your elbow will contain infectious virus that can be passed on for up to a week or more!

What I have stocked in preparation for the pandemic spread to the US:

Latex or nitrile latex disposable gloves for use when going shopping, using the gasoline pump, and all other outside activity when you come in contact with contaminated areas.

Note: This virus is spread in large droplets by coughing and sneezing. This means that the air will not infect you! BUT all the surfaces where these droplets land are infectious for about a week on average - everything that is associated with infected people will be contaminated and potentially infectious. The virus is on surfaces and you will not be infected unless your unprotected face is directly coughed or sneezed upon. This virus only has cell receptors for lung cells (it only infects your lungs) The only way for the virus to infect you is through your nose or mouth via your hands or an infected cough or sneeze onto or into your nose or mouth.

2) Stock up now with disposable surgical masks and use them to prevent you from touching your nose and/or mouth (We touch our nose/mouth 90X/day without knowing it!). This is the only way this virus can infect you - it is lung-specific. The mask will not prevent the virus in a direct sneeze from getting into your nose or mouth - it is only to keep you from touching your nose or mouth.

3) Stock up now with hand sanitizers and latex/nitrile gloves (get the appropriate sizes for your family). The hand sanitizers must be alcohol-based and greater than 60% alcohol to be effective.

by Anonymousreply 186March 2, 2020 4:57 PM

4) Stock up now with zinc lozenges. These lozenges have been proven to be effective in blocking coronavirus (and most other viruses) from multiplying in your throat and nasopharynx. Use as directed several times each day when you begin to feel ANY "cold-like" symptoms beginning. It is best to lie down and let the lozenge dissolve in the back of your throat and nasopharynx. Cold-Eeze lozenges is one brand available, but there are other brands available.

I, as many others do, hope that this pandemic will be reasonably contained, BUT I personally do not think it will be. Humans have never seen this snake-associated virus before and have no internal defense against it. Tremendous worldwide efforts are being made to understand the molecular and clinical virology of this virus. Unbelievable molecular knowledge about the genomics, structure, and virulence of this virus has already been achieved. BUT, there will be NO drugs or vaccines available this year to protect us or limit the infection within us. Only symptomatic support is available.

I hope these personal thoughts will be helpful during this potentially catastrophic pandemic. You are welcome to share this email. Good luck to all of us! Jim”

I’m on a Transatlantic cruise for a week. There are hand sanitizer dispensers everywhere and crew are squirting it on passengers at the dining rooms. The ship is not crowded so some people must have canceled or been eliminated by screening. There are no ports of call so if no one got on the ship with the virus, we should be fine until we reach our destination.

by Anonymousreply 190March 2, 2020 5:03 PM

R189, I went on a cruise a couple of years ago, not in flu season, and they had people standing outside of the buffet restaurants with hand sanitizer. They would put it on your hands as you entered. It is a good practice at all times. It obviously doesn’t stop coughing though.

by Anonymousreply 191March 2, 2020 5:07 PM

CNBC: The CDC says there are currently 91 confirmed or presumed positive cases of COVID-19 in the U.S. At least 48 of those are people who were evacuated from Wuhan, China, the epicenter of the outbreak, and the Diamond Princess cruise ship. At least 17 cases — 12 confirmed and 5 presumptive positive — are travel-related infections. Twenty-six cases — 16 confirmed and 27 presumptive positive — are from human-to-human interaction, according to the agency’s website. The CDC reported just over 60 confirmed cases on Sunday.

by Anonymousreply 192March 2, 2020 5:09 PM

More CDC incompetence:

The CDC abruptly postponed a media briefing that was originally scheduled for noon today— at the last minute and without explanation. The agency was expected to discuss new cases in California and Washington state that were confirmed over the weekend, as well as the nation’s first two deaths outside of Seattle. “This call has been canceled and will be rescheduled, please disconnect from the call,” an operator announced to reporters on hold for the call.

If you ignore it, you don't have to be responsible for it. That's why they wouldn't even test for this virus until forced to. This country doesn't give a shit about your health unlike other places.

Constantine said a motel was being purchased by the county to house isolated patients. Using modular homes already owned by the county to house patients was another option the executive brought up.

So it's kind of pointless. Unless your plan includes stationing someone at every entrance of your home 24/7 with a rocket launcher or something.

“Checking out Janet’s bad cough," Wozniak wrote in a check-in on Swarm that was cross-posted to Twitter.

“Started Jan. 4. We had just returned from China and may have both been patient zero in U.S.”

The message concluded with the information that Wozniak was with his wife Janet Hill at the West Coast Sports Institute in Santa Clara, Calif.

There are currently nine confirmed cases of coronavirus in Santa Clara. As of Monday afternoon, there have been six confirmed deaths from coronavirus in the U.S.

They want such language to be included in the emergency spending bill.

“The biggest thing I hear at home now … is the lack of tests. … They are scrambling as fast as they can to urge the CDC to get more tests out. … They think they can do 100 a day right now – that’s not nearly enough," Murray said.

[quote] Marc Lipsitch told CBS News in an interview airing Monday that "40 to 70 percent" of the global population could become infected with coronavirus, and it’s “almost inevitable” that the virus will impact the “entire globe.” He added that 1 percent of those who develop symptoms could die.

[quote] “That is a projection, so we will find out if it's accurate as things go on,” Lipsitch said. “It is the best estimate that I've been able to make based on a combination of the mathematical models that we use to track and predict epidemics.”

The idea upthread re PSAs, ads and billboards is a good idea at this point. The general population NEEDS to be educated on how to stem the spread of this thing. The vast majority do NOT know how to do this: using proper hand washing practice, sneezing protocol, gloves, not touching the face or mouth, sanitizing the cell phone daily, using elbows or stylus to push door handles or elevator buttons, etc.

Most healthcare workers know most of these practices, but the rest out there don't.

Some emergency ad space on radio and tv would go a long way to soothing the public, while educating them on what to do to protect themselves. It would slow the spread of it enough to get us through the warm summer months, keep our healthcare system from getting overwhelmed, and hopefully buy time for a vaccine to be produced or preventive medication protocol put in place.

The local grocery store has been out of hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes since the news broke about community transmission of the virus on the mainland. I went today for a few final items for my stash and other things are running low now too (certain cleaning products, OTC medications, bottled water). It was busier than it usually would be on a weekday afternoon, and there was a palpable sense of urgency in the air, though not panic.

This was the scene at a Costco on Saturday here in the DFW suburbs. The parking lot was packed with cars circling like vultures waiting for a space to open up. I couldn't tell if it was panic induced or if people were just doing their ordinary shopping. This may be typical for a Saturday at Costco for all I know. I try to avoid the big box stores on the weekends because I hate crowds.

I'm an Angeleno who takes earthquake-preparedness very seriously -- or, at least more seriously than most. (been waiting for the Big One my whole life). I'm not one of those Armageddon-level preppers, but I have 2-3 weeks-worth of canned/shelf-stable food and bottled water stored at my house (for my dogs, too). I also have a box of N95 masks & nitrile gloves (100ct) in the house....and a pair of goggles (for wildfires) . I keep a 24-pack of toilet paper stored on the top shelf of my linen closet which I never touch. Or rather, that I won't open it until I've bought a new one to rotate out. It is there for the earthquake (or whatever). A couple years ago, I scooped up a bunch of antibacterial wipes from Dollar Tree & 99 cent hand-sanitizers from Trader Joe's

My point being....because I am so prepared for an earthquake, I don't feel the need to run out and buy anything. Except maybe Zinc lozenges.

Costco where I am (Santa Clara County) was insane Saturday, according to a friend. Guy got there when it opened and left without buying because the line to the registers went all the way back to the meat department at the back of the store. Lots of toilet-paper buying in bulk.

But we have nine cases in the county now.

Also crazy was the scene at Ranch 99 (Asian supermarket chain)--someone on NextDoor said people were going off with 100-lb bags of rice and the store was completely emptied of hot sauce. The local Chinese community was antsy early on--I'm sure it's because they were communicating with family in China and knew what was going down there.

by Anonymousreply 384March 3, 2020 5:15 AM

It's bizarre really when you think about it -- people are buying up all the hand sanitizer but you can still find plenty of hand soap, which, according to the experts, is the much more effective defense in the fight against coronavirus.

Also, interestingly enough, though hand sanitizer is nowhere to be found in all the city, I was in a CVS in Hell's Kitchen here in Manhattan this evening and they had plenty of boxes of Clorox wipes, all sitting in a box in the pharmacy.

by Anonymousreply 385March 3, 2020 5:21 AM

CNN-Authorities unable to find source of coronavirus case in Florida

There is still no clue as to how an individual in Manatee County, Florida, acquired the novel coronavirus that has now infected more than 90,000 people globally.

According to a source with knowledge of the situation, contact tracing for the infected person has failed to reveal any potential source of infection.

They have had no travel to any affected regions, nor have they had any contact with an individual who tested positive. Although the individual lives in Manatee County, the source says they are believed to have gone to an ER at a hospital in nearby Sarasota County, Florida earlier in the week.

But the individual was only tested for the virus on Saturday, after Florida expanded its testing criteria on Friday evening.

That means any healthcare worker who had been treating the patient, without the proper protection, was at danger of being exposed to the virus.

Are smokers more, or less, susceptible to covid-19?

I could accept that their generally poor health would put them at the head of the line for elimination.

But, alternatively, I could accept that the tar and nicotine coating their lung tissue would kill any virus that dared enter there.

Are we going to soon be rid of them? Or, are they here to stay?

by Anonymousreply 416March 3, 2020 12:34 PM

R416 One would assume so but there was a study done in China on 160 cases (there is a link to it in an earlier Coronavirus Freakout thread that concluded that smokers, as well as people with COPD & asthma were not effected by the virus.

The study was peer reviewed and claimed to have no conflict of interest (they all say that but its bullshit).

The study also said something like only 2 or 3 of the 160 were smokers and 6 or 7 were former smokers.

My opinion on the study: Its bullshit, the sample is way to small and another much bigger study of the first 40,000 or so cases in China did find that people with asthma & COPD were vulnerable to the disease. That particular study didn't mention smokers but given half the male population smoke you can guarantee that of the males of the 40,000 cases are smokers. That is a much broader cross section than the study of 161 people.

Good move by Andrew Cuomo in NY:

In a move that other states might want to emulate, New York State Governor Andrew M. Cuomo said that the state’s Department of Financial Services is requiring health insurers in the state to waive cost sharing associated with testing for the new coronavirus, COVID-19. The initiative paves the way for low-cost emergency room, urgent care, and hospital visits for patients worried that they may have contracted the virus.

The Governor also said that New Yorkers receiving Medicaid coverage will not be expected to pay a co-pay for any testing related to the novel coronavirus, COVID-19. The steps are designed to ensure that residents of the state won’t have to worry about cost as an obstacle for getting tested. Any tests that are being conducted at the State’s Wadsworth Lab are fully covered.

The death rate is only 1% if you're over 50. 0.4% for people in their 40s. 0.2% for those in their 30s.

From the UK Telegraph:

The death toll skews old even more strongly. Overall, China CDC found, 2.3% of confirmed cases died. But the fatality rate was 14.8% in people 80 or older, likely reflecting the presence of other diseases, a weaker immune system, or simply worse overall health. By contrast, the fatality rate was 1.3% in 50-somethings, 0.4% in 40-somethings, and 0.2% in people 10 to 39.

Well, that was awkward. Tim Kaine asked Dr. Fauci if he was indeed disinvited from today's Senate Dem lunch. Vice President Pence is attending to talk Covid19. Fauci said he was planning to go. He turned to his staff who appeared to say NO - he wouldnt go after all.

Tim Kaine complained - then.. Fauci interrupted to say - he WOULD be going. Tim Kaine tried to ask what changed - "Was I that persuasive?" No reason for the apparent change. "This doesn't instill confidence," Kaine said.

It is not something I check so tomorrow I'm going back for groceries and I will see if there is panic buying. Target was relatively quiet and the one I went to didn't have the alcohol. Strangely I went down the aisle they had the hand sanitizer I bought the other day and there was not one left.

The experts are saying to wash your hands and use hand sanitizer R472.

by Anonymousreply 473March 3, 2020 5:14 PM

The CDC said the number of cases in the U.S. rose to at least 108 and that the agency would be scaling back its case counts to just twice a week, on Mondays and Fridays. The CDC also said it’s stopped reporting “persons under investigation” or PUIs. “Now that states are testing and reporting their own results, CDC’s numbers are not representative of all testing being done nationwide,” the CDC said.

I've had very sore muscles and a tight chest for 4 days. No fever. I'm a college prof and there are 5 cases as of today in Geneva. I know some of the students were in Venice for Carnival, not to mention carnival in Swiss cities - mob scenes. School direction sent lame email about washing hands and "don't invite people who have been to infection zones to study with you." ???!!! Very bizarre. 9 cases in Zurich. I'm guess this will rip through universities but not that many of those strong youths will be very sick at all. I bet few will even be tested.

by Anonymousreply 479March 3, 2020 5:37 PM

I just got back from the Costco in Sunnyvale, California. I drove up at 8am for the 9am opening, got gas and hung out. By 9am there were at least 200 shoppers waiting at the entrance. I don't know how many people wait in the morning, usually. Everyone raced to the back where the cleaners and paper products were located. I grabbed a couple of packs of frozen chicken and a box of nutritional shakes for my 90+ father. Then I looked at the trees, found a peach and an orange and a great deal on planting mix. As I was leaving a woman with 5-count them-5- bales of toilet paper noted my lack of the same. I was in and out in 30 minutes and a kid from the store helped me get the trees in my Prius!

I'm going back tomorrow for another tree, then staying home until I have to take someone to the airport.

Yes. my life is that exciting!

Apparently true. Also, Purell contains 70% alcohol.

Main focus for preventing coronavirus spread should be hand hygiene, not face masks

"A vast volume of research has shown time and again that frequent hand-washing has the greatest effect on preventing the transmission of respiratory illnesses, more so than disinfecting surfaces or using protective equipment such as surgical masks, N-95 respirators, gowns or gloves. Keeping hands clean is the No. 1 thing the public can do."

[quote]why are people buying Isopropyl Alcohol?

You can make your own hand sanitizer with it -- but "experts" are now advising against it:

If made correctly, DIY solution could be helpful and even effective. But if made incorrectly, it can be downright harmful.

"I worry about people making their own sanitizer as it will be difficult to make sure that the concentrations are correct," Daniel Parker, assistant professor of public health at the University of California, Irvine, told CNN of the trend.

For hand sanitizer to be effective, it must have at least 60% alcohol content, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Store-bought hand sanitizers will also often have emollients to counter the harshness of the alcohol on the skin. If you don't have that in your homemade recipe, you could risk hurting your hands, Sally Bloomfield, a professor at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine told the Guardian.

I going the hydrogen peroxide route myself. Buying up a lot of it (the regular stuff you get at the drug store), and mixing it 50/50 with distilled water to put in multiple spray bottles to wipe down my home surfaces, work cube and environment, etc.

Am trying to find some clean 'handiwipes' to purchase - just dry untreated wipes, with nothing on them - so I can soak them in this HP mixture to create my own sanitizing wipes to carry in a ziploc with me when I'm out doing things. Will use them to wipe down the inside of my car, tables at the cafe where I sit, etc...anyone know where I can find these?

How come the rest of the world isn't talking about the protease inhibitors China is using. The "Kaletra". The two personal accounts I read by Chinese young men about having covid-19 said they got HIV drugs as did their families and everyone improved rapidly. When the western world talks about coronavirus they always say "there is not treatment."

I think it's because no rich Western countries have much Kaletra anymore.

by Anonymousreply 499March 3, 2020 6:19 PM

re 497's update: in all of the updates for the past couple of weeks, the death rate has stayed fairly consistent: at around 3%.

That of course isn't a formal calculation, since the overall case rate probably isn't accurate and is likely missing many of the 'true sick', hence the true mortality rate is likely much lower. But the consistency is what's striking to me here.

by Anonymousreply 500March 3, 2020 6:19 PM

Even skinny little American piglets need their toilet paper.

by Anonymousreply 501March 3, 2020 6:22 PM

It may be r499 because Kaletra and other protease inhibitors can inhibit replication of the virus and hence lessen symptoms. These may be helping those with COVID-19. They aren't a cure by any means, but probably help recovery and to keep viral levels down in the infected so as to lessen transmission (much like current HIV drugs) . I hope there is research being done on these.

From the Guardian. 7 dead now in US

17m ago 19:04

A seventh person with coronavirus has died in the Seattle area of the US, but the infection wasn’t identified until after their death.

The New York Times has reported that the individual was brought to Seattle’s Harborview Medical Center on 24 February and died two days later, before a crisis in the state began unfolding over the weekend.

by Anonymousreply 503March 3, 2020 6:24 PM

Ugh I can barely even think about all the dry cracked hands come spring!

by Anonymousreply 504March 3, 2020 6:26 PM

Yes, the Kaletra (2 protease inhibitors - approved for medical use) limit the viral load. Sounds like a win to me for infected people who are quite sick. I'm sure China and Korea are studying this.

by Anonymousreply 505March 3, 2020 6:27 PM

The stockpiling of toilet paper reveals the abysmal dietary habits of the average American. A person whose diet is high in fiber likely needs very little toilet paper. R506 So, it's a thin-the-herd virus but still no one wants to be the one sacrificed. Also a lot of people getting sick at the same time can disrupt the medical system and social order. Then come people's fear and panic that are harder to deal with than the virus. So there are risks in letting the virus spread unimpeded other than its mortality rate.

The toilet paper hoarding is a weird 'prepping' thing that I can only hope happens only in the USA. It seems to be a sort of hobby for some people, except for devout Mormons who have to do it. A young man who attends a university in New York City has been isolated in his family’s suburban home with symptoms of coronavirus after his father tested positive for the deadly disease, Mayor Bill de Blasio said Tuesday.

The man’s wife and another child, who attends a private Jewish school in Riverdale, are also isolated in the house in New Rochelle but haven’t shown any symptoms, de Blasio said.

“Obviously, this is a crisis that will be with us, I think it’s fair to say, not for weeks but for months,” de Blasio said during a City Hall news conference.

The student lived on campus at his unidentified school, Westchester County Executive George Latimer said earlier in the day.

The lawyer and his wife have two other children who live in Israel, Latimer said.

The university student is suspected of getting the illness from his dad, who on Tuesday became the state’s second confirmed case of coronavirus but the first believed to have been infected through “community contact.”

The father, a 50-year-old lawyer at a small firm in Manhattan, is in serious condition at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center, officials said.

He was transferred there on Monday from Lawrence Hospital in Bronxville, where he was admitted on Friday after falling ill on Feb. 22, said Dr. Demetre Daskalakis, the city’s deputy health commissioner for disease control.

De Blasio said that the father, who traveled to Miami last month, has had “respiratory issues” for the past month and that “this appears to be an example of community spread.”

Asked if he would declare a public-health emergency, de Blasio said, “I don’t think at this hour of this day were anywhere near an emergency declaration, but obviously things could change.”

CNN

At least nine people have died from coronavirus in Washington state.

Eight people have died in King County, Department of Health officials said. There's a total of 21 cases in the county.

Earlier, one person in Snohomish County died. The county has had six cases.

by Anonymousreply 542March 3, 2020 7:48 PM

At this point, they need to just shut off all ingress and egress from Seattle and Kings, Snohomish and Pierce counties. Bar the roads; let shipments of goods in and out, but no one leaves or goes unless they have approved permission to do so. The entire area is compromised.

That sounds extreme but its what we're heading toward. Mandatory hand washing, glove use in public. Mandatory testing, like they're doing in the drive-ins in South Korea. Mandatory quarantine via threat of arrest - my mother remembers a time post-war when a "quarantine" sign on a family home meant business, and police would take action if it was broken.

r549 It's spread by droplet via air (like by sneezing) or by surface contamination.

I'd like some more information - doubt its forthcoming but one can dream - about how else it might be spread. As in, a firm detail as to how long it lasts on surfaces and on what types.

Also, what is the human route of transmission of infection. Some of the posts a few threads back said it seemed to perhaps come in thru the eyes and ears (!) as well as nose or mouth. Can it be taken in via closed skin, or open cuts.

[quote]And wearing gloves in public is far better than wearing a mask, so long as you don’t touch your face with them on.

So true.

The past few nights when I was sitting out in public, using my Ipad, I deliberately put a paper napkin in my hand at all times so when I put my hand up to my face - to rest my chin, for example - I wasn't 'touching' it. I changed it out every half hr. It looked weird but felt cleaner.

by Anonymousreply 559March 3, 2020 8:18 PM

R557 The problem is many people don't realize they are touching their face until they are already touching their face!

by Anonymousreply 560March 3, 2020 8:18 PM

Sterilizer freaks - how about using 40 or 99% isopropyl alcohol as hand/surface sanitizer?

I saw one-gallon jugs of it at my local Ace Hardware. It's pretty cheap as well.

by Anonymousreply 561March 3, 2020 8:22 PM

A reminder never to mix bleach with ammonia. It creates a toxic gas that will kill you.

by Anonymousreply 562March 3, 2020 8:23 PM

You'll be dead, but your toilet will be fabulously clean!

by Anonymousreply 563March 3, 2020 8:25 PM

I know someone that used ammonia and bleach to clean her toilet and she didn't die but she burned the hell out of her lungs and was hospitalized for months.

by Anonymousreply 564March 3, 2020 8:26 PM

I read there's far lower risk of contracting it through shared air... don't get close to someone who's ill or coughing obviously, but the real danger is virus enduring on surfaces, which is why hand washing is far more important than any bloody mask. If anyone should wear the masks, it's the ill... so maybe you want to stay as far away as you can from anyone in a mask. They might be sending a message they're ill or infectious.

Thanks to the lack of leadership, general complacency, open borders and frequency of travel within the states, any significant cluster in Washington state (or any other state) will spread like wildfire. It's also unlikely that America will be able to lock down cities like China did for weeks to help slow or stop the spread. Not looking good at all

by Anonymousreply 566March 3, 2020 8:30 PM

Why do so many Americans need toilet paper? Other civilized countries have realized that toilet paper isn't very good.

by Anonymousreply 567March 3, 2020 8:31 PM

yeah this obession for toilet paper is hilarious! omg there's a killer virus, i need to stock up on toilet paper.

by Anonymousreply 568March 3, 2020 8:38 PM

Lack of leadership? Here's the great Mike Pence leading his Coronavirus team win a prayer circle.

And on the right, there's Anthony Fauci, striking a blow for science by complying with his non-believing master's orders. Excellent use of his time and his skills.

We're in great hands.

I disagree, R566. China could lockdown because it isn't a democracy. The U.S. will have to handle things more selectively and locally... suspension of public events, school closings on a need to basis, restrictions on visitors at certain places like hospitals and nursing homes. But between the Constitution and the economy, and Trump trying to cover his useless ass, nothing too dramatic or abrupt will get done unless the dead are lying in the streets, and that doesn't look likely. It's been going on in China for what - two months - and even though the majority of the dead are in China, the total dead globally so far is just about 4,000. That doesn't seem lethal enough for the U.S. public to accept draconian measures. Nor do they seem necessary at this point. There is nothing to stop people self quarantining anyway... if you spend most of your time at home or away from people, wash your hands, you can probably protect yourself better than the national guard blocking the roads to the city.

Grindr will be a problem, though.

by Anonymousreply 570March 3, 2020 8:39 PM

Grindr. Yup. Watch out for Grindr hookups.

R568 Who knew toilet paper is like a security blanket for so many people?

by Anonymousreply 574March 3, 2020 8:47 PM

Experts agree they have a great deal to learn, but four factors likely play some role: how close you get; how long you are near the person; whether that person projects viral droplets on you; and how much you touch your face. (Of course, your age and health are also major factors.)

What’s a viral droplet?

It is a droplet containing viral particles. A virus is a tiny codependent microbe that attaches to a cell, takes over, makes more of itself and moves on to its next host. This is its “lifestyle,” said Gary Whittaker, a professor of virology at Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine.

A “naked” virus can’t go anywhere unless it’s hitching a ride with a droplet of mucus or saliva, said Kin-on Kwok, a professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong’s Jockey Club School of Public Health and Primary Care.

These mucus and saliva droplets are ejected from the mouth or nose as we cough, sneeze, laugh, sing, breathe and talk. If they don’t hit something along the way, they typically land on the floor or ground.

To get access to your cells, the viral droplets must enter through the eyes, nose or mouth. Some experts believe that sneezing and coughing are likely the primary forms of transmission. Professor Kwok said talking face-to-face or sharing a meal with someone could pose a risk.

Julian Tang, a virologist and professor at the University of Leicester in England who is researching coronavirus with Professor Kwok, agreed.

“If you can smell what someone had for lunch — garlic, curry, etc. — you are inhaling what they are breathing out, including any virus in their breath,” he said.

My poor UPS delivery man has lost his bouncy step. He's being worn out humping boxes of toilet paper, bleach, bottled water and mayonnaise. He's wearing a Clint Eastwood-stle hat, too, now and I'm sure it's not regulation. I think he's gonna snap. I'm peeking at him through the curtains. He just threw my 24-pack, canned soups down with such a thud that my heart is racing. I think I'm in love.

How close is too close?

Christian Lindmeier, a spokesman for the World Health Organization, said it’s best to stay three feet from a sick person.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that standing within six feet could carry risk.

How long is too long to be near an infected person?

It’s not yet clear, but most experts agree that more time equals more risk.

Will you know a person is sick?

Not necessarily.Keep in mind that if you do get sick, most symptoms are as mild as a cold or the flu. Still, others who are infected with coronavirus never fall ill at all. (Technically, COVID-19 is the name for the sickness caused by the respiratory virus.) But the flip side of this is that it can be hard to tell who is capable of spreading coronavirus.

In a growing number of cases, people without symptoms have infected others. The W.H.O. still believes that most of those who have spread coronavirus were clearly ill at the time of transmission, Mr. Lindmeier said.

Can the virus last on a bus pole, touch screen or other surface?

Yes. After numerous people who attended a Buddhist temple in Hong Kong fell ill, the city’s Center for Health Protection collected samples from the site. Restroom faucets and the cloth covers over Buddhist texts tested positive for coronavirus, the agency said.

Technically, the virus widely known as the coronavirus is just the latest of many similarly shaped viruses. (Coronaviruses are named for the spikes that protrude from their surfaces, which resemble a crown or the sun’s corona.) A study of other coronaviruses found they remained on metal, glass and plastic for two hours to nine days.

Whether a surface looks dirty or clean is irrelevant. If an infected person sneezed and a droplet landed on a surface, a person who then touches that surface could pick it up. How much is required to infect a person is unclear.

Coronaviruses are relatively easy to destroy, Professor Whittaker said. Using a simple disinfectant on a surface is nearly guaranteed to break the delicate envelope that surrounds the tiny microbe, rendering it harmless.

As long as you wash your hands before touching your face, you should be OK, because viral droplets don’t pass through skin.

If you are concerned about getting sick from someone who might have sneezed onto a product you’ve ordered that’s made in China, don’t worry. In the time it takes to get to the United States, you should be safe, and if you are really concerned, you can clean the surface with a disinfectant or wash your hands after touching it.

Does the brand or type of soap you use matter?

-No, several experts said.

My neighbor is coughing. Should I be worried?

-There is no evidence that viral particles can go through walls or glass, said Dr. Ashish K. Jha, director of the Harvard Global Health Institute.

He said he was more concerned about common spaces than dangers posed by vents, provided there is good air circulation in a room.

An infected neighbor might sneeze on a railing and if you touched it, “that would be a more natural way to get it from your neighbor,” he said.

Can I get it from making out with someone?

-Kissing could definitely spread it, several experts said. Though coronaviruses are not typically sexually transmitted, it’s too soon to know, the W.H.O. said.

Is it safe to eat where people are sick with coronavirus?

-If a sick person handles the food or it’s a high-traffic buffet, then risks cannot be ruled out — but heating or reheating food should kill the virus, Professor Whittaker said.

Dr. Jha concurred. “As a general rule, we haven’t seen that food is a mechanism for spreading,” he said.

Just got back from a Sam's Club in Michigan. Not at all busy and plenty of hand sanitizer, toilet paper and cold/flu medication. Couldn't find any hydrogen peroxide but I don't know if they carry that.

Yesterday, we were hearing the virus can go through the air. Such as through breathing. People above are saying droplets, like the flu. So, wtf? I trust yesterday’s news on this.

by Anonymousreply 586March 3, 2020 9:18 PM

if the infected person coughs/sneezes near you, the virus can travel through the air and you can inhale it, if you are close enough...

Some smart looking nitrile gloves are just what the doctor ordered when you make a trip to the grocery store. Those carts are brimming with germs, so don't touch the handle. Those things are nasty.

Buy a big box of nitrile gloves. When coronavirus is behind us, you can have a big fisting party.

R589,

Coronavirus is believed to spread mainly through “respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes within about six feet of another person,” according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

by Anonymousreply 594March 3, 2020 10:11 PM

Don't waste your time, R594. They'll accept nothing less than droplet nuclei, sneeze-to-ear, and unbroken-skin transmission.

[QUOTE] going the hydrogen peroxide route myself. Buying up a lot of it (the regular stuff you get at the drug store), and mixing it 50/50 with distilled water to put in multiple spray bottles to wipe down my home surfaces, work cube and environment, etc.Am trying to find some clean 'handiwipes' to purchase - just dry untreated wipes, with nothing on them - so I can soak them in this HP mixture to create my own sanitizing wipes to carry in a ziploc with me when I'm out doing things. Will use them to wipe down the inside of my car, tables at the cafe where I sit, etc...anyone know where
