Am I the only person who actually liked that movie? It was very funny and charming.
Gwyneth Paltrow - ‘Shallow Hal’ was a ‘disaster’
by Anonymous | reply 45 | March 4, 2020 6:54 PM |
This is your 30th thread today, OP. Why?
by Anonymous | reply 1 | March 2, 2020 12:15 AM |
"Shallow Hal" was one of her biggest hits at the office and she got $10 million. Most actors would kill for a disaster like that.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | March 2, 2020 12:20 AM |
Jack looks-- dare I say it?-- hot in the pic at OP.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | March 2, 2020 12:24 AM |
He almost looks like one of those CW show guys.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | March 2, 2020 12:27 AM |
Is that Gwyneth or a stand-in?
by Anonymous | reply 5 | March 2, 2020 12:27 AM |
How’d they make her arms look so realistic?
by Anonymous | reply 6 | March 2, 2020 12:29 AM |
That movie is very cringey now because it comes across as smug fat-shaming.
But her worst movie was "A View From the Top" -- which Paltrow has called "A View From My Ass"
by Anonymous | reply 7 | March 2, 2020 12:33 AM |
I like it. I also like A View from the Top.
Goop is an annoying snob.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | March 2, 2020 12:36 AM |
Compared to her mausoleum of critical and box office flops, Shallow Hall ranks easily among her top 5 films.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | March 2, 2020 12:40 AM |
She is an annoying snob, but she is also a good actress in dramas.
I don't think she is very funny in comedies.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | March 2, 2020 12:42 AM |
Love/hate her.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | March 2, 2020 12:43 AM |
I liked Shallow Half.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | March 2, 2020 1:05 AM |
I look like shit in OP’s pic.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | March 2, 2020 1:05 AM |
That stand in has a pretty face, much prettier than goops bird like angular mug.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | March 2, 2020 1:09 AM |
She hates it because people were "dismissive" -- Yeah, [italic]that's what it's like[/italic] when you are overweight ya dumb dip. People feel perfectly free to treat you like dirt. And oh, the clothes are shitty for them too. Who would have ever guessed that?
Shallow Hal wasn't bad. View from the Top was horrendous. They had the fakest outtakes I've ever seen in a film. Cringe worthy.
She is a tedious, self-absorbed, annoying twat but she has turned in some good work. She'd still be idolized today if she had ever learned to keep her trap shut.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | March 2, 2020 1:09 AM |
She's crazy. Shallow Hal is one of her finest moments in the history of American cinematography.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | March 2, 2020 1:17 AM |
she's just disgusted she wore the fat suit. probably had to juice cleanse every day just to get the feelings of shame to go away.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | March 2, 2020 1:23 AM |
That's definitely not Goop in the pic: it must be her body double (and it doesn't look like she's wearing any fat make-up so she was probably morbidly obese for real).
I liked the film. It's funny, but the two of her films Goop is most ashamed of are the two I seem to enjoy the most: this one and View From the Top. It must be her hatred for them that makes me love them even more.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | March 2, 2020 1:44 AM |
She has to distance herself from that film. The fat-shaming hasn't aged well.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | March 2, 2020 2:22 AM |
Funny how we don’t think society changes much today, and here is a movie with outdated themes that proves it has changed considerably in a somewhat short time.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | March 2, 2020 2:32 AM |
R20 So true. Imagine Felicity Huffman doing Transamerica today.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | March 2, 2020 2:40 AM |
I actually like this movie a lot. Its a guilty pleasure of mine.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | March 2, 2020 2:42 AM |
R21 Or an all-Chinese cast playing geishas in Memoirs of a Geisha. We should totally have a "Movies from the last 20 years that couldn't get made today thanks to woke Twitter" thread or something.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | March 2, 2020 2:54 AM |
There was a fairly recent thread about movies that couldn't get made today, R23, but I can't be bothered to look for it.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | March 2, 2020 3:08 AM |
Um, that was her only interesting film.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | March 2, 2020 3:43 AM |
Most NONPC people with a sense of humor found it hysterical. Is it Casablanca, no? but a dam funny movie.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | March 2, 2020 3:46 AM |
I love the movie. I kept wondering how they were going to create a happy ending that didn't follow the Beauty and the Beast bullshit (she learns to look beyond looks but her reward is that he turns into a good looking guy?) And the Farrelly Bros had some real balls to end it in a satisfying way that went in a more honest direction. It's no surprise the co-writer/director went on to win best picture last year.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | March 2, 2020 3:59 AM |
R20 only because sjw and whiners now have a platform on social Media to complain about everything
by Anonymous | reply 29 | March 2, 2020 6:57 AM |
It has nothing to do with the film's quality or lack thereof, but how un pc it was.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | March 2, 2020 6:59 AM |
Are people this stupid? She regrets it for the message it sent. That the hot version was hot just coz she was skinny and vice versa for the fat version. That she had to wear a fat suit which amounts to shitting a second time on fat bitches.
And most importantly the irony that Jack Black is a round faced fat fuck but is never treated as fugly in the movie, even though he absolutely is ugly for a leading man.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | March 2, 2020 7:10 AM |
And also the movies message on shallowness seems to be suggesting that fat bitches can't be hot and you gotta look under the hood to find their value. Which is obnoxious as shit when the actress had to wear a fat suit.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | March 2, 2020 7:16 AM |
R31 thinks gooper is a genuine person and not a narcasistic vain cunt.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | March 2, 2020 9:26 AM |
She’s only upset because even if it’s all makeup and prosthetics, when she dies, the fat photos will mar her otherwise flawless, picture-perfect life.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | March 2, 2020 10:14 AM |
R34 You're totally onto something with that. With all the crazy stuff she promotes on Goop she probably does believe being overweight is the ultimate failure so her image being in any way associated with those photos is disturbing to her.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | March 2, 2020 10:20 AM |
That’s not Gwyneth. NY Post is dumb.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | March 2, 2020 10:26 AM |
[quote]That stand in has a pretty face
What pissed me off was that Paltrow and others insisted there was no stand-in, it was just her in a fat suit. But it was PAINFULLY obvious that her fat suit was only on when she was covered head-to-toe in some ugly outfit, and all the shots of the woman from behind in Daisy Dukes and such were a stand-in.
They only claimed there was no stand-in because they got criticism at the time for making fun of fat people, and they thought if they said that there was no fat woman being made fun of, that it was only Goopy and her fat suit, it made everything better.
Everyone whining at top volume about "PC woke police" are conveniently forgetting that the Farrellys, Goop and Jack Black all lied on the press tour to make the film seem like it was a sweet little romance and not one extended fat chick joke. So unless you have the balls to call out the Farrellys for trying to act "PC," you should shut your gobs.

To all of you saying how much things have changed: The movie was in questionable taste when it came out.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | March 2, 2020 3:21 PM |
I think the movie could have worked if Hal during his hypnosis saw Rosemary as she was and still found her beautiful. Same with the children in the burn ward and Rosemary's friends/ex. It would have Hal just treating them as human beings, not fazed by their appearance, as opposed to the patronizing "OMG you're all so gorgeous" shtick.
That of course would mean getting rid of Paltrow because there'd be no need for a skinny actress. Which in turn would have made the movie even better. Win-win.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | March 2, 2020 10:40 PM |
R38) That is my recollection as well. There were some who criticized the film for being insensitive and even mean.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | March 2, 2020 11:50 PM |
It’s a shit movie
by Anonymous | reply 41 | March 3, 2020 12:54 AM |
Some of you have amusingly low-brow tastes.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | March 3, 2020 1:47 AM |
I have never seen it. It seemed to me when it came out like it had to be full of cruel jokes, and every time anyone has told me it’s a good movie and I should watch it, I’ve just never been able to do it.
And as much as you’ll all want to kill me for saying this, Gwyneth is one of my favorite actresses, in the mix with Katherine Hepburn, Cate Blanchett, Betty Davis, Kate Winslet, Nicole Kidman, Claire Danes, Kirsten Dunst, et al.
She has made some excellent movies with a very broad range, from Proof and Sylvia to Mr. Ripley and The Royal Tenenbaums to Emma to Shakespeare in Love. I stopped watching her when she got into the comic book thing, but I think she has done some extraordinary performances and I really wish I knew nothing about who she is as herself.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | March 4, 2020 10:54 AM |
I saw it a long time ago, but I don't recall it being mean. It had the usual fat jokes. The one that made me laugh was how much of the pool water splashed up when Gwyneth's character does a canon ball in the pool. But that's the Farelly brothers. They can be crass and low brow, but they are also surprisingly sentimental.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | March 4, 2020 12:20 PM |
Jacks hot in OP. Actually I’ve always been sexually attracted to him. How’s he hung I wonder?
