I hope so.
They're like a floating petri dish. I was on one big cruise ship and never again. They unload thousands of people at port and destroy the environment. They also dump their shit at sea.

I never wanted to go on one after reading David Foster Wallace's account of his trip.

OMG, do they? Surely NOT.

they're tawdry unless you're on a very small one
by Anonymous | reply 3 | March 1, 2020 10:44 PM |
should they save up the shit and bring it back to port?

All of these cruise ship companies have been building ships like mad, and raising the prices of cruises to pay for them. Poor Richard Branson just got his company going.
The people who cruise regularly will continue to do so, once this virus is gone. However, new cruisers are going to be more difficult to entice. I would imagine a lot of people have been put off for life with these quarantine stories.
It kills me that they are so damaging to Florida, and Florida just keeps taking their money without any regard for their own damn coastline.

YES.

Someone on DL who cares about Florida? Now I've seen it all.

Hopefully. These cruise lines treat their employees like shit, pay them next to nothing, and expect them to treat their lard assed customers like they are kings and queens.

Statistically speaking, there are bound to be some Florida Men on here, though you can hardly blame them for keeping a low profile.

R2, I took a mediterranean cruise that went from Spain to Croatia. I was on the lower floors. On the way back to port, I smelled sewage. I later learned they dumped their sewage in the ocean. This was a Carnival Cruise line. In the US, Carnival has been fined and warned several times not to do this or they will lose their license. I hear they keep on doing this.

This virus isn't going anywhere. It's here to stay. Like insects.

Bill Maher had a segment on the Cruise industry and the virus. They are like the Death Star.

Yeah, they roll into a port and unload thousands of gawking old people to infest the streets. Awful.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | March 14, 2020 10:59 PM |
The elderly are the ones who usually take cruises and over 65 that take cruises. This is what they get for making so many damn ships.
We better not bail them out. They usually keep their home base outside the US in order to avoid paying taxes.

I told you so bitches!!!

i love cruises and am looking forward to big discounts when this all settles down.

Do they still have shuffleboard on the Lido Deck?
by Anonymous | reply 17 | March 14, 2020 11:27 PM |
R16, your excrement is poisoning our oceans.

I don't care about Floridians, but I do care about the environment, even in Florida.
R10
As far as I know, it's completely legal for them to do that in international waters, but some of the cruise lines (Carnival seems to be the worst offender) won't even wait that long. They've dumped raw sewage into Puget Sound as well, within U.S. waters.
R4
Are you kidding? Of course they should, and they should dispose of it properly.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | March 14, 2020 11:35 PM |
I don't think this will put an end to low-end cruises, although of course the industry will take a hit. There are people who just LOVE those floating deathtraps, who don't give a rat's ass about the environment or the effect on places they visit. It's the one affordable way for them to leave all their cares behind and have a little luxury, their one chance in life to feel like a big shot.
So when all the crisis is over with and they're working enough hours to afford a little vacation time, they'll go back to their Carnival or Disney cruises, whatever they can afford.

Cruises are for slackjawed rubes that THINK they're being worldly, but have all of the comforts of the Super 8 and the Hometown Buffet out by the airport.
Seriously, who wants to stay in a shoebox, eat at buffets with strangers, and then have to disembark for an hour to visit some tourist trap town with a hundred other gawking Americans? No thank you.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | March 15, 2020 12:07 AM |
Always thought of them as something the elderly did. Now I am elderly but I still have no desire to cruise, for reasons well stated by R21.

The Yammering Yam wants to bail them out with taxpayer dollars even though they don't pay a large portion of U.S. taxes, according to this article. Hopefully, the Democrats will stand firm and just let them drown. Who needs them?

It's either dysentery onboard the ship or Shelley Winters drowns while swimming through the hull.
Cruise ships are to be avoided at all costs!

If you haven't read the piece R1 is referring to, treat yourself. This part still makes me lol: Men after a certain age simply should not wear shorts, I've decided; the skin seems denuded and practically crying out for hair, particularly on the calves. It's just about the only body area where you actually want more hair on older men.
