The beginning of the end for Bernie Sanders!

Mammas and babies for Biden!

by Anonymousreply 1February 29, 2020 11:06 PM

This is the first primary Biden has won after three campaigns.

by Anonymousreply 2February 29, 2020 11:08 PM

When will democrats and the media learn...Bernie does well in caucuses and not so much in primaries.

by Anonymousreply 3February 29, 2020 11:08 PM

Don't get too excited, OP, Bernie will surge ahead on Super Tuesday.

by Anonymousreply 4February 29, 2020 11:10 PM

How do they know already when the polls closed 10 minutes ago?

by Anonymousreply 5February 29, 2020 11:10 PM

Wow, this election is all over the place. Pete won Iowa. Hunchback Bernie won Nevada and little NH, and now Biden is winning SC.

I think it’s clear all the rest of the candidates can drop out if they haven’t won a state yet.

by Anonymousreply 6February 29, 2020 11:10 PM

[QUOTE] This is the first primary Biden has won after three campaigns.

And it won’t be the last.

by Anonymousreply 7February 29, 2020 11:10 PM

I wish it was Buttigieg or Klobuchar, one of the younger moderates who was leading...rather than Biden. We’re going to have to choose between the two ancient white men, to pick who will go against ancient white man Trump.

by Anonymousreply 8February 29, 2020 11:10 PM

[quote]How do they know already when the polls closed 10 minutes ago?

It was an enormous blowout for Biden. The turnout was largely black, and Bernie has almost NO black support.

by Anonymousreply 9February 29, 2020 11:11 PM

[QUOTE] We’re going to have to choose between the two ancient white men, to pick who will go against ancient white man Trump.

I’ll choose the one who believes in capitalism.

by Anonymousreply 10February 29, 2020 11:12 PM

I don't think so, no.

But Bloomberg becomes a factor next week.

by Anonymousreply 11February 29, 2020 11:12 PM

Gentleman Joe for the WIN! YES!

by Anonymousreply 12February 29, 2020 11:13 PM

Bloomberg is going to take a huge lead next week.

by Anonymousreply 13February 29, 2020 11:13 PM

Trump may be equally ancient, but he did not recently have a heart attack nor has he been operated on twice for brain aneurysms.

by Anonymousreply 14February 29, 2020 11:13 PM

[quote]Don't get too excited, OP, Bernie will surge ahead on Super Tuesday.

I worry for America.

by Anonymousreply 15February 29, 2020 11:14 PM

Does this mean Hunter can come out of hiding now?

by Anonymousreply 16February 29, 2020 11:14 PM

[quote]But Bloomberg becomes a factor next week.

Bloomberg is not a factor.

by Anonymousreply 17February 29, 2020 11:14 PM

Bloomberg is a joke. $500,000,000 for show in win/place/show

by Anonymousreply 18February 29, 2020 11:16 PM

He actually is a factor, R17. That’s why Bloomberg should DROP OUT and stop helping Bernie Sanders by siphoning votes from Joe!

by Anonymousreply 19February 29, 2020 11:16 PM

r13 How do you know?

by Anonymousreply 20February 29, 2020 11:16 PM

[quote] Bloomberg is going to take a huge lead next week.

I thought this sentence was going to read, "Bloomberg is going to take a huge dump next week."

I thought, "Maybe he should eat less."

by Anonymousreply 21February 29, 2020 11:17 PM

Bloomberg should drop out and endorse Biden. Biden should announce his VP pick, Kamala Harris before super Tuesday.

by Anonymousreply 22February 29, 2020 11:19 PM

"We’re going to have to choose between the two ancient white men, to pick who will go against ancient white man Trump."

But only one white candidate has the support of non-white voters.

by Anonymousreply 23February 29, 2020 11:19 PM

[quote] It was an enormous blowout for Biden. The turnout was largely black, and Bernie has almost NO black support

That’s not true. Bernie now has the majority of black support via polls conducted.

by Anonymousreply 24February 29, 2020 11:19 PM

"Bloomberg is going to take a huge lead next week."

Bloomberg is going to take a huge leak next week.

Fixed it for ya, R13.

by Anonymousreply 25February 29, 2020 11:19 PM

Grandpa #2 wins. Woohoo.

by Anonymousreply 26February 29, 2020 11:24 PM

The Bros are whining because it was declared as soon as the polls closed.

by Anonymousreply 27February 29, 2020 11:24 PM

When aren't they whining? Fuck 'em

by Anonymousreply 28February 29, 2020 11:26 PM

[QUOTE] The Bros are whining because it was declared as soon as the polls closed.

Fuck ‘em. Joe can get to 270 electoral votes without them. There’s three reasons why Donald Trump would prefer to run against Bernie Sanders rather than Joe Biden: Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin. The Trump campaign knows that Joe Biden has the best chance of winning those three states, which would secure an election victory.

by Anonymousreply 29February 29, 2020 11:27 PM

[quote]Bernie now has the majority of black support via polls conducted.

Yup. Bernie overtook Biden a couple of weeks ago and is holding steady.

According to The Hill

NATIONWIDE BLACK SUPPORT:

- Bernie Sanders 32%

- Joe Biden 23%

- Mike Bloomberg 22%

- Liz Warren 6%

- Pete Buttigieg 3%

- Amy Klobuchar 1%

by Anonymousreply 30February 29, 2020 11:28 PM

Again if Bloomberg or Biden were out Bernie would be solidly in second. And that day will come.

by Anonymousreply 31February 29, 2020 11:30 PM

[QUOTE] Yup. Bernie overtook Biden a couple of weeks ago and is holding steady.

The Democratic candidate who actually has the most votes from black people is Joe Biden.

by Anonymousreply 32February 29, 2020 11:30 PM

It needs to come before Tuesday.

by Anonymousreply 33February 29, 2020 11:31 PM

[quote]Biden should announce his VP pick, Kamala Harris before super Tuesday.

He might do that. It could prevent Sanders from winning all of California’s delegates.

by Anonymousreply 34February 29, 2020 11:31 PM

[quote]The Democratic candidate who actually has the most votes from black people is Joe Biden.

Nothing you just said made any sense in reference to a nationwide poll when the rest of the nation hasn't voted. But ... sure.

by Anonymousreply 35February 29, 2020 11:32 PM

Finally. Maybe this will give him some confidence on the campaign trail. He has so far seemed sort of 'drifting'.

by Anonymousreply 36February 29, 2020 11:32 PM

Terry McAuliffe endorsed Biden on CNN.

That'll help Joe in VA.

by Anonymousreply 37February 29, 2020 11:32 PM

Well given the tension on this thread I’d say we all need to come before Tuesday

by Anonymousreply 38February 29, 2020 11:32 PM

[quote]But only one white candidate has the support of non-white voters.

Well most voters are white, so...

by Anonymousreply 41February 29, 2020 11:37 PM

by Anonymousreply 43February 29, 2020 11:39 PM

It could be Biden-Klobuchar -- Biden for African-Americans, Latin, etc. and Klobuchar for the Midwest, farmers failed by Trump, etc. plus she's also a moderate and has an excellent record in Senate and could be first female VP.

by Anonymousreply 44February 29, 2020 11:40 PM

R43, That's hot.

He will do well in Alabama on Tuesday, that’s all.

by Anonymousreply 53February 29, 2020 11:44 PM

I guess Joy Reid was wrong. Blacks don’t hate Pete that much, he came in second, they hate Bernie more.

by Anonymousreply 61February 29, 2020 11:47 PM

A very small change in the electoral landscape... but joe will need to get more than 15% in CA on Tuesday ( and likely get a plurality in Tejas). Unlikely.

We need to commit to supporting the nominee... Bernie, Liz, Pete, Joe... whoever it is, needs unified support.

by Anonymousreply 62February 29, 2020 11:47 PM

I live in California and I just got a text from the Bloomberg campaign asking if I'll vote for him next week . Creepy.

MSNBC is saying Pete is 4th Place

by Anonymousreply 65February 29, 2020 11:49 PM

If Bloomberg is serious about beating Trump, he needs to drop out and endorse Biden yesterday.

by Anonymousreply 66February 29, 2020 11:51 PM

The moderate and progressive wings both need to stop and unify.

You're not going to win without the help of the other.

by Anonymousreply 67February 29, 2020 11:51 PM

Harris brings nothing, today's results show us black people will turn out for Joe. They like him. A Hispanic man or woman would bring more. The Castros have no charisma.

Pete, Amy, and Steyer need to drop out now.

by Anonymousreply 68February 29, 2020 11:52 PM

If Steyer hadn't thought it would be "a hoot" to run for President so he could tell his friends about "that time I was on the debate stage with that Bernard Sanders..." the 12% of the vote he got would have gone to Biden

by Anonymousreply 69February 29, 2020 11:52 PM

Klobuchar or Warren would be good picks for VP. Klobuchar has proven she's been able to get stuff done with Republicans and she can appeal to the Midwest states. Harris already knocked Biden in the first debate when she got certain facts wrong about him and couldn't take the punches in the 2nd debate, so I think the other two ladies would be good. Biden already has the African-American vote apparently as the South Carolina votes come in, so he doesn't need to pick Harris or Abrams (who didn't win her last campaign, btw).

by Anonymousreply 70February 29, 2020 11:52 PM

by Anonymousreply 72February 29, 2020 11:55 PM

Didn't the black vote in 2016 give SC to Hillary. We know how well that went .

by Anonymousreply 73February 29, 2020 11:55 PM

Warren would make a poor VP. She won't be content with a backseat role.

by Anonymousreply 74February 29, 2020 11:55 PM

Understandably, African American voters feel Joe will bring back a little of that Olde Tyme Obama. And they're probably right. Joe might even give him a job (wouldn't that make the Russiapublican's heads explode?).

I want 'Obamacare' to stay and be improved. It's the law of the land, many people have benefitted from it and it was fought for long and hard. Fix it.

You can hear the relief in the TV pundit's voices.

by Anonymousreply 75February 29, 2020 11:56 PM

If Joe Biden was smart, he call Amy Klobuchar tonight and offer her VP, and call Buttigieg and offer him a high-level cabinet position... in exchange for them. You dropping out tomorrow morning.

by Anonymousreply 76February 29, 2020 11:56 PM

^^ then both dropping out

by Anonymousreply 77February 29, 2020 11:56 PM

Joe Biden -- call Amy for VP and Buttigieg or Warren for Secretary of State or something else high-profile.

by Anonymousreply 78February 29, 2020 11:58 PM

Warren brings nothing to the ticket either. Amy would be great. Joe really likes Sally Yates and Gretchen Whitmer. Give me a black woman who isn't Stacey Abrams or Kamala.

by Anonymousreply 79February 29, 2020 11:58 PM

But just yesterday MSNBC said all the young Blacks in SC were voting Bernie and convincing their parents to do likewise.

by Anonymousreply 81February 29, 2020 11:59 PM

Warren is toast. Bernie drew 12,000 people on Boston Common today in the cold. And, he's ahead of Warren in Massachusetts Super Tuesday polls.

by Anonymousreply 82February 29, 2020 11:59 PM

Call Bloomberg and make him head of the Federal Reserve or something in the Treasury, while you're at it, Mr. Biden.

by Anonymousreply 83February 29, 2020 11:59 PM

I like that R78. Call Amy and offer her the VP slot. Call Pete and offer him State.

by Anonymousreply 84February 29, 2020 11:59 PM

😂 MSNBC been telling Mike Bloomberg to drop out multiple times for the past hour.

by Anonymousreply 85March 1, 2020 12:00 AM

Pete's really smart -- give him Secretary of State and in 4 or 8 years he'd be in even better position to be President and he'd still just be in his 40s

by Anonymousreply 86March 1, 2020 12:01 AM

Department of Labor would be better for Amy so that she can keep an eye on stapler production!

by Anonymousreply 87March 1, 2020 12:02 AM

The problem with Amy or Warren or Harris is that they won't add to the Electoral College count. Someone from a purple state would be wise, like Sherrod Brown from Ohio. He may not be exciting, but if Ohio flips it would be HUGE. A reset. No chance of Trump winning again.

by Anonymousreply 88March 1, 2020 12:03 AM

Amy for VP, definitely.

by Anonymousreply 93March 1, 2020 12:07 AM

Don't watch MSNBC R91, but she's on with Maddow now and Maddow keeps making it seem like it's her idea--is that SOP for her?

by Anonymousreply 94March 1, 2020 12:09 AM

The Kloubachar as VP posts have to be satire.

Number one, she can't handle a modicum of questioning about her past, as evidenced by her complete meltdown with Buttigieg in the previous debate over a mistake she herself made. The woman has no personality and can't laugh at herself. With all the crap Hillary got, she makes Hillary look like Marie Osmond in comparison.

Second, there's also her past record as a prosecutor which has already received some negative buzz and could really ignite should she get the VP spot . It could inflict some serious damage on Biden's staunch AA base, especially the younger ones whom he's still trying to court. Not a brilliant idea to select someone who favored police departments time and time again and help send a teenage AA male to prison on a flimsy trial with skeptical evidence. A political minefield if there ever was one.

It's probably going to be Abrams or Harris.

by Anonymousreply 95March 1, 2020 12:10 AM

Bloomberg is going to go down in spectacular flames. And the money that he's blown already on commercials, there's at least one every five minutes.

by Anonymousreply 96March 1, 2020 12:11 AM

At least Bernie gets delegates. Pete gets nada. Not even 10%. this is the end of Mayo Pete Buttigieg and thank fucking goodness

[quote] White women overwhelmingly voted for Trump because they couldn't stand to vote for another woman.

Wrong. According to Pew the vote of white women was 45% (Clinton) and 47% (Trump).

It was white men who overwhemling voted for Trump because they couldn't stand voting for a woman-- Clinton (32%) to Trump (62%).

The real question you should ask is why white men won't vote for a woman.

I vote in Michigan on March and have been supporting Klobuchar or Pete. Now I’m all in for Joe because he’s got the best shot at taking down Bernie! I don’t dislike Bernie, but I think he’s full of crap. He’s promising to give everything away for free with no details on how it will be paid for...because there are no details. It’s a fairy tale.

Biden isn’t exciting, but he’s a decent man who will make a fine— if not revolutionary—president. I looked forward to the calm. Hope all the other moderates bow out quickly and support Biden so we can move past the Bernie drama and focus on beating Trump.

by Anonymousreply 109March 1, 2020 12:19 AM

R107 that should be a Biden tag line: Look forward to the Calm with Joe!

by Anonymousreply 110March 1, 2020 12:20 AM

MSNBC saying Biden needs to get Harris’ endorsement or at least support to beat Bernie in CA on Super Tuesday.

by Anonymousreply 111March 1, 2020 12:21 AM

R22 Good choice. I'd go with Holder as VP, but Harris is my 2nd pick. I'd also choose Preet Bharara as AG, and instruct him to dig as deep as he can into the Frumps - every last single one of them. Deep until you see their guts and then keep going.

by Anonymousreply 112March 1, 2020 12:21 AM

Tonight is the beginning of the end for Pete too. He’s in single digits (just like he’s been in every single SC poll this whole time.)

by Anonymousreply 113March 1, 2020 12:21 AM

Black people do not trust Harris. She tried, but couldn't get them to move. Sherrod Brown is a good idea, but it would mean losing his Senate seat.

by Anonymousreply 114March 1, 2020 12:21 AM

[quote]Blacks don’t hate Pete that much, he came in second, they hate Bernie more

I feel like the same problems we had with polling in 2016 are happening again in 2020, and the polls might say Sanders has more support, but in actual practice Biden and Buttigieg are getting more votes from the black demographic.

For the overall voting totals, Biden is now ahead of Sanders by 5 delegates, if I'm counting this right, proving again that the early states -- just as we said -- were not nearly the proof of Bernie's "inevitable win" as Bernie stans wanted you to think.

by Anonymousreply 115March 1, 2020 12:23 AM

[quote]I vote in Michigan on March and have been supporting Klobuchar or Pete. Now I’m all in for Joe because he’s got the best shot at taking down Bernie!

by Anonymousreply 116March 1, 2020 12:23 AM

the nominee (hopefully Biden) will have to pick a woman for VP. Women have saved this country during Trumps reign of terror. Women and blacks are the core of the party, and the hope for ending the insanity.

by Anonymousreply 121March 1, 2020 12:28 AM

[quote]For people who keep insisting vehemently on Harris or Abrams, do you really feel it makes that much difference?

The same could be asked of those pushing Kloubachar.

You already have the stapler and comb jokes as it is. Add to that her crusty personality. Where's this huge edge that she supposedly has over everyone else?

And if black people don't trust Harris, you really think they're going to trust Kloubachar after reading about Myron Burrell?

by Anonymousreply 122March 1, 2020 12:28 AM

Fine with Biden or Bloomberg. Preferably both.

r126 There was a real strong possibility a couple weeks ago that Bidens win here would be small here so a strong win is a real boost to his campaign. I think some black voters came back to him after the last couple debates.

by Anonymousreply 132March 1, 2020 12:32 AM

R119 Pete has more black support than Cory Booker or Kamala.

by Anonymousreply 133March 1, 2020 12:32 AM

[QUOTE] Why are these pundits acting like this changes everything? Biden was always going to win South Carolina. This is not a surprise at all.

Bullshit. He wasn’t “always going to win” anything. The polls had Bernie closing in rapidly, and the media made it seem like it might be the end of Joe’s campaign with a loss or close victory.

by Anonymousreply 134March 1, 2020 12:33 AM

Well, I'm no professional pundit, but I never doubted that Biden would blow out SC.

Bernie supporters Boo as he congratulates Joe Biden - classy, Bros

by Anonymousreply 135March 1, 2020 12:33 AM

Yeah, it’s the magnitude of Biden’s win that’s getting all the attention.

Bernie’s speaking now and he seems very low energy.

by Anonymousreply 136March 1, 2020 12:33 AM

[quote]And if black people don't trust Harris, you really think they're going to trust Kloubachar after reading about Myron Burrell?

For some weird reason people on Datalounge believe that having a black VP will help the nominee get black votes.

Black people don't automatically support someone else because they're black. They are as complex a voting group as all of the other groups.

If that were true Kamala and Corey would still be in the race.

by Anonymousreply 137March 1, 2020 12:34 AM

That's why I take polls with a grain of salt R134. 2016 taught me that, this season has not changed that

by Anonymousreply 138March 1, 2020 12:34 AM

R133. They are not in the race. For all we know most of his votes might have come from whites since he is supported by 3 percent of blacks in SC.

by Anonymousreply 139March 1, 2020 12:35 AM

The media is just thrilled that a non-Bernie candidate won a state that is not named Pete Buttigieg (who they fucking despise).

by Anonymousreply 140March 1, 2020 12:35 AM

[quote]Pete has more black support than Cory Booker or Kamala.

Single digits is still single digits, whether it’s 3% or 6%. It’s not gonna get Pete the nomination. He’s toast.

by Anonymousreply 141March 1, 2020 12:35 AM

Biden-Brown. I can see it. (love Sherrod Brown; wished he'd run).

by Anonymousreply 142March 1, 2020 12:36 AM

[quote]For the overall voting totals, Biden is now ahead of Sanders by 5 delegates, if I'm counting this right, proving again that the early states -- just as we said -- were not nearly the proof of Bernie's "inevitable win" as Bernie stans wanted you to think

Math must not be your strong suit. Bernie is leading in delegates.

by Anonymousreply 143March 1, 2020 12:37 AM

For fuck’s sake, how long is Bernie going to speak?

by Anonymousreply 144March 1, 2020 12:37 AM

Biden would get destroyed by Trump. I would laugh so hard.

by Anonymousreply 145March 1, 2020 12:37 AM

“Sick and TIYUD”

by Anonymousreply 146March 1, 2020 12:38 AM

Is Pete going to contest these results as well?

by Anonymousreply 147March 1, 2020 12:38 AM

Basically are we saying if you don't vote for Joe it's because you don't want him, or are we saying he isn't the first choice? If Pete, Mike, Amy Steyer drop out, will those votes go to Joe? Because IMO the people supporting Bernie don't have a second choice. They suppport BErnie. But Joe can definitely pick up a lot of support if other moderates drop out.

The other thing is that Trump has been openly telling people at his rallies to vote for "Crazy BErnie." But overall turn out is down,anJoe won in spite of cross over voting. So that's good.

by Anonymousreply 148March 1, 2020 12:40 AM

I can't think of a weaker general election candidate than Biden.

by Anonymousreply 149March 1, 2020 12:40 AM

Bernie just name-checked the "military-industrial complex" in his speech re: South Carolina now.

Sort of proves Pete's line about the 60s

by Anonymousreply 150March 1, 2020 12:40 AM

Clyburn’s speaking now. He’s the reason Biden won this by 30 points tonight, make no mistake.

by Anonymousreply 151March 1, 2020 12:42 AM

Who else thinks this is a possibility... Setup: Biden wins the election, the Senate stays in the GOP hands, the House stays with the Dems. Scenario: 1 or 2 Supreme vacancies occur during the first two years of a Biden Presidency and Mitch McConnell refuses to even allow a discussion to take place, let alone bring hearings to bear. He'll pull another scam and come up another reason that he rips from his ass as to why Biden shouldn't be allowed to fill the vacancy/vacancies.

Possible? I think so.

Which is why it's super important to win back the Senate, along with the Oval Office and keep the House blue.

by Anonymousreply 152March 1, 2020 12:44 AM

[quote]Is Pete going to contest these results as well?

No one is faster at that than the Sanders campaign, which even 12-year-olds remember from 2016.

by Anonymousreply 153March 1, 2020 12:44 AM

[quote]I think some black voters came back to him after the last couple debates.

It was the Clyburn endorsement.

by Anonymousreply 154March 1, 2020 12:45 AM

Listening to Bernie's capitulation speech I'm getting the sense that he is disappointed about the turnout by his BernieBros. This is very telling to me. He can't bring out the numbers and new voters that he, and Russia, wants us to believe that he can. He's trying to hit all of the hot buttons now as attempt to generate enthusiasm. Unfortunately, he's not coming across as too enthused himself. Just another one that bought into his own hype.

If ever there was a time, it would be this... Biden needs to come with a FIERY speech!

by Anonymousreply 155March 1, 2020 12:45 AM

[quote]Math must not be your strong suit. Bernie is leading in delegates.

The counter I looked at on Business Insider apparently included South Carolina already but didn't say that it did, so I added the "new" delegates when I didn't need to and got the wrong total. BI is behind an adwall anyway, so here's Vox's updated counter:

Sanders is having a rough day with this loss and the NYT article about how the Chapo guys are all millionaire assholes just bilking his followers. I'm not surprised he seems down.

Bernie was just on telling his supporters he’s going to take down the banks when he’s president

Suuuuuuure you are, Bernie. You’re going to take down the world economy which is based on money laundering by gangsters. They’re going to let you do that. Uh huh.

by Anonymousreply 168March 1, 2020 12:51 AM

VA Congressman Bobby Scott, who I believe is the dean of VA's Congressional delegation as well as one of its most prominent AA politicians, endorsed Biden.

by Anonymousreply 169March 1, 2020 12:51 AM

He should show more deference to Rep. Clyburn. “My buddy Jim” does NOT cut it, Joe.

by Anonymousreply 170March 1, 2020 12:52 AM

Joe sounds like he's speaking from 1974.

by Anonymousreply 171March 1, 2020 12:53 AM

In SC here, a local polling group with a local station, found Buttigieg to be the predominant preferred second choice. Biden received most of what votes could have otherwise gone to Buttigieg.

Steyer spent 20 million on ads and basically lived in the state. He put multiple black politicians on his payroll and donated extensive money to black organizations. Promising reparations to the poorer black voters was a constant message from Steyer. Despite all this, he likely will not win any delegates.

Mostly upstate, Republicans mounted a 'vote for Bernie effort.'. That's the GOP stronghold and Bernie's percentages were higher there.

The Jim Clyburn endorsement was huge for Biden. Clyburn's son, by the way, is an operative for Buttigieg.

by Anonymousreply 176March 1, 2020 12:55 AM

Give us 20 pushups, Joe.

by Anonymousreply 178March 1, 2020 12:57 AM

Why can't he sound like this in the debates??

by Anonymousreply 179March 1, 2020 12:57 AM

Warren is in 5th. It’s disgraceful that she won’t drop out. She’s literally just playing a spoiler at this point. She won’t even win her home state.

by Anonymousreply 180March 1, 2020 12:58 AM

Here is my theory;

Biden is the primary protector of the Obama legacy. I'm sure some of you will disagree, but like it or not, President Obama was a very good president. If you look at all of the quantitative data, President Obama ranks, not in the top 10, but probably in the top 7 best presidents that this nation has ever had thus far, and Black people know this. Did he get everything done that Black people hoped for and wanted? No! But, he got a helluva A LOT done!

Black people have also watched how the Republicans--particularly certain white people ie Donald Trump, have tried to destroy that legacy and erase President Obama from the history books--at the very least, rewrite that history to negate President Obama's accomplishments. Black people also saw and REMEMBER how these same people obstructed him at every turn while he was president BUT still he got A LOT done!

Black people are not going out like that and therefore won't let that happen.

Joe Biden has his issues (most of us have a family member that is like him) and yet we all still know (at this moment, anyway) that he can do the job. However, more importantly, he WILL protect the Obama legacy. Therefore, he will have the support of the Black electorate unless he does something sooo egregious that Blacks will have no other choice but to look at other choices.

Black people have SEEN and EXPERIENCED those like Trump before in the history of this nation. Blacks have seen the escalation of racism, white supremacy (HECK! Trump has a white supremacist on staff and he probably isn't the only one!), the appointments of all of the white male right-wing judges, etc. This country IS NOT going back to the 1950's or 40's. We've been there and done that. There's no need to do it again. So, unless Biden does something sooo awful he can pretty much call a lock on the African-American vote. Also, rest assured... Biden's feet are going to be held to the fire too. He won't get a free ride from the Black community. My naive thought is that if he chooses someone like Kamala Harris (although, I think that she would make a FANTASTIC Attorney General), as a running mate... this show will be over.

by Anonymousreply 181March 1, 2020 12:58 AM

I’ll vote for anyone but Bernie.

by Anonymousreply 182March 1, 2020 12:59 AM

[quote]My naive thought is that if he chooses someone like Kamala Harris (although, I think that she would make a FANTASTIC Attorney General), as a running mate... this show will be over.

It’s not naive - it’s a fact. This country does NOT want a female president or Vice President. It’s sad and shouldn’t be that way, but it’s obvious. Look at the current female candidates - they haven’t won even one state.

by Anonymousreply 184March 1, 2020 1:01 AM

Hunter's been on the phone for Joe.

by Anonymousreply 185March 1, 2020 1:01 AM

lmfao @ Biden's winning music tonight being "Move on Up" by Curtis Mayfield definitely an appeal to over 45 black voters

I'm SO GLAD Sanders lost badly tonight but unfortunately he's doing well in polls for California and Texas

Biden doesn't have any tv ads in most of the Super Tuesday states.

Is this the start of his progression or just a blip on the radar? I'm afraid Sanders will sweep Tuesday

by Anonymousreply 190March 1, 2020 1:04 AM

Kamala Harris, Elizabeth Warren and Amy Klobuchar are all really strong candidates in terms of their career accomplishments and experience. It's sad that misogyny and sexism have derailed their chances. I'd prefer any of them over Biden and certainly Sanders.

It's pathetic that the US will be 1 of the last western countries to have a female leader.

It would have been sweet revenge if the most misogynistic "president" in modern US history was followed by the first woman. I'm just hoping whoever she'll be in the future she'll be a Democrat. I won't be able to stomach a repub like Haley being the first to get the glory

by Anonymousreply 191March 1, 2020 1:05 AM

Unlike Trump, Bloomberg would not pick incompetent and crooked sychophant.

Biden would choose good people also, but with a heavier political dimension. There will be those IOUs.

by Anonymousreply 225March 1, 2020 1:23 AM

by Anonymousreply 226March 1, 2020 1:24 AM

Well, I'm going to praise Tom Steyer and Bloomberg. Their television ads have been quite instrumental and effective in hammering Trump. Their money was well spent!

by Anonymousreply 227March 1, 2020 1:25 AM

Yes, Biden needs to make deals with Pete & Amy.

Pete would be good as a VP candidate. He campaigns very well, is smart, and displays high energy. He knows the dirt on Mike Pence.

by Anonymousreply 228March 1, 2020 1:25 AM

So is it safe to assume Steyer will endorse Biden?

by Anonymousreply 229March 1, 2020 1:25 AM

But yes, she should have dropped out even before Harris and Booker.

by Anonymousreply 230March 1, 2020 1:26 AM

For the people who keep posting Abrams should be a VP pick...why? That's an honest question. We're political junkies so we know her, but do other people outside Georgia?

IMO Joe doesn't need to bargain with anyone. Pete and Amy are running out of money; their fates are sealed. Joe has the moderate lane momentum now. Plus we need Amy in the Senate. Biden should pick Booker as his running mate, not Kamala.

by Anonymousreply 252March 1, 2020 1:38 AM

[quote]Can someone explain why CNN hired Yang, who really doesn't know all that much about politics, to be a analyst on their panel?

He's very personable.

I agree with you, R250

by Anonymousreply 253March 1, 2020 1:40 AM

So, in South Carolina, looks like turnout has surpassed 2016 levels, and approaches 2008 levels.

Turns out, the energy is with Biden and Black voters, not Bernie and his Revolution.

#SouthCarolinaPrimary #BidenHarris2020

by Anonymousreply 254March 1, 2020 1:40 AM

For realz R249?

He's funny, he's Asian, he's got great name recognition and he knows as much if not more about politics as any of the other knuckleheads they have on there.

Not to mention they can ask him all those "so as someone who was up on the debate stage, what do you think was going through their head at that moment" type questions.

by Anonymousreply 255March 1, 2020 1:41 AM

Have we noted that much of Bernie's vote in SC came from white Republican crossover voters who are trying to boost him because they think he'd be easiest for Tweetie to beat?

by Anonymousreply 256March 1, 2020 1:42 AM

[quote]Biden should pick Booker as his running mate, not Kamala.

That would be the death knell for the Biden campaign.

by Anonymousreply 257March 1, 2020 1:42 AM

Now what for Biden? His campaign is broke and he hasn’t campaigned in any ST states. 3 million people in CA have already voted. Tonight was a blowout, no doubt, but it may be too late for him.

by Anonymousreply 258March 1, 2020 1:43 AM

r255 The correct answer is he's Asian

by Anonymousreply 259March 1, 2020 1:43 AM

I can't believe Trump pulled in over 31k votes in Iowa where he ran virtually unopposed while Bernie and Pete each received over 500 caucus votes. Why does Iowa go first again?

by Anonymousreply 260March 1, 2020 1:43 AM

He gets Steyers money and all those Wall Streeters who fear the Bern open their wallets.

by Anonymousreply 261March 1, 2020 1:44 AM

1 of the major problems of the Democratic party in the last 20 years is that it's such a diverse party it's hard to pick national candidates who can excite a majority of the base.

older Democratic voters are more conservative, both black and white. Sanders does his best with the under 40 crowd across all races but gets killed over 40 with all races.

Biden does his best with the over 40 crowd though not with Latinos.

Buttigieg does well with white voters of any age

a lot of people want to vote for Warren but don't because they assume (correctly) she won't have enough support to defeat Trump

by Anonymousreply 262March 1, 2020 1:45 AM

I don't understand early voting in a clown car primary like this. So much can happen before the big day that you run the risk of throwing your vote away.

by Anonymousreply 263March 1, 2020 1:46 AM

with repubs it's much easier

Most of them are white over 45 hetero xtians

Younger repubs and non-white repubs are so small in comparison their opinions don't matter and they usually go along with whomever the nominees are anyway

by Anonymousreply 264March 1, 2020 1:47 AM

I guess Tulsi is still running for the moral victories?

by Anonymousreply 265March 1, 2020 1:47 AM

Tulsi’s presence is important. America needs her voice. She’s one of the most anti-war politicians in the country.

by Anonymousreply 266March 1, 2020 1:49 AM

The donations will pour in for Joe after today, you can put money on that!

People wanted to see which moderate would/could get a big win before fully investing in them. Joe won big, and that separates him from the others.

by Anonymousreply 267March 1, 2020 1:49 AM

Donald J. Trump @realDonaldTrump

Sleepy Joe Biden’s victory in the South Carolina Democrat Primary should be the end of Mini Mike Bloomberg’s Joke of a campaign. After the worst debate performance in the history of presidential debates, Mini Mike now has Biden split up his very few voters, taking many away!

by Anonymousreply 268March 1, 2020 1:50 AM

If Bernie is your candidate, Trump wins the Presidency. The whole world knows this.

by Anonymousreply 269March 1, 2020 1:51 AM

Trump didn't realize Bloomberg wasn't on the ballot in SC

Not that it matters to Deps

by Anonymousreply 270March 1, 2020 1:51 AM

R268 Am I the only one who is just down to thinking "I hate him so fucking much" every time Don tweets or speaks?

by Anonymousreply 271March 1, 2020 1:52 AM

The cumulative delegate count so far - Sanders 52, Biden 44. That revolution is on hold.

by Anonymousreply 272March 1, 2020 1:52 AM

If Biden wins I'm voting for Trump.

by Anonymousreply 273March 1, 2020 1:53 AM

The Root, Michael Harriot & Jason Johnson, along with Joy Reid, MSNBC, pursued a hatchet job on Buttigieg. They are not the only ones. They used the South Bend Blacks Lives Matter woman and a South Bend Council member, with prior DUI charge, who was sued, but case dismissed, over slander claims by four police officers. The fired police chief was engaged in unauthorized surveillance of police personnel.

Racial projection. They need to be confronted. They should not get a pass with these tactics.

by Anonymousreply 274March 1, 2020 1:55 AM

R273 So want the Supreme Court to be dominated by extremist Christianist fascists for the rest of your life. So you want to lost a woman's right to choose and marriage equality and allow private enterprises to discriminate against homosexual for "religious" reasons. You want to deregulate all environmental regulations to the point of accelerating the exist. You want to dismantle the constitution and the rule of law. Sure, go ahead and do that.

by Anonymousreply 276March 1, 2020 1:59 AM

Status Quo Joe will never win against Trump.

by Anonymousreply 277March 1, 2020 2:00 AM

Is it racist to say maybe we put too much importance on South Carolina?

by Anonymousreply 278March 1, 2020 2:03 AM

Did anyone else read Trump's tweet and thought it was somewhat subdued? It's just my gut's feeling but I think that this huge Biden win has disturbed Trump.

by Anonymousreply 279March 1, 2020 2:04 AM

It's being reported by Ari Melber that the Biden campaign is seeing money pouring in like they have never seen before.

by Anonymousreply 280March 1, 2020 2:06 AM

I am sure that these days it probably would be considered racist, R278. The truth is that the last Democrat to win SC in the general election was Carter in 76. We won't win that state, so we do put too much importance on it. North Caroline went for Obama in 2008 (but for Romney in 2012) - the same with Alabama, so even those would be better as first in the South states.

by Anonymousreply 281March 1, 2020 2:07 AM

OH!!!!

Lindsey Graham @LindseyGrahamSC

Congratulations to Joe and Jill Biden, and the entire Biden team, on the well deserved big win in the #SCDemocraticPrimary. Best of luck in the future.

#Socialism goes down

Shouldn't we allow the Democrats in the red states have some say in who the nominee is?

Remember all those young AA voters who were voting for Bernie and had convinced their parents to do the same? Yeah, it turns out they split evenly between Bernie and Biden.

The nerve of that prick Lindsey Graham.

by Anonymousreply 287March 1, 2020 2:18 AM

by Anonymousreply 288March 1, 2020 2:18 AM

R286 Interesting... I read the tweet and I had this "Jesus, it'd be nice if folks just stopped yelling at each other and told lies about each other... even when they disagree." It might be totally BS, but I think that's some of Joe's appeal....

by Anonymousreply 289March 1, 2020 2:20 AM

Obama needs to come out hard for Biden like tomorrow, not waiting until the general election.

by Anonymousreply 290March 1, 2020 2:20 AM

Is Bernie toast yet? Super Tuesday is looming over us all!

by Anonymousreply 291March 1, 2020 2:20 AM

[quote]And, that is why Sanders sounded so defeated. He can't deliver the voters. THAT should be weighing heavily on him.

Biden is now ahead in the total votes cast across all four contests.

I think Bernie may actually get fewer votes in SC than he did in 2016, and that's with a lower turnout.

If Bernie wasn't such an egomaniac, he could realize that backing a winner and being able to get a lot of input into the direction of a new administration is a better deal than losing the general.

by Anonymousreply 292March 1, 2020 2:21 AM

As soon as voters see Joe as a winner they will start lining-up. He'll start hoovering-up those all-important Independents and Undecideds.

And he's Teflon. Burisma and Barr are not going to hurt him. After the whistleblower, the voters know what's up.

by Anonymousreply 295March 1, 2020 2:22 AM

I saw a new poll today where 25% of South Carolina Bernie supporters wouldn't commit to backing the nominee.

by Anonymousreply 299March 1, 2020 2:25 AM

Bernie got about 96,500 votes in 2016. He's right now at about 88,000, and that's with about 14% yet to come in.

I doubt that unless every single vote that left to be counted is for him, he's going to go past the first number.

by Anonymousreply 300March 1, 2020 2:25 AM

It's funny how the media, having spent the last week preaching how no one could touch Bernie, is all in for Biden and his chances tonight

There is just something that scares me about Biden v Trump.... I don't know if I trust he can pull it off.

by Anonymousreply 304March 1, 2020 2:28 AM

If Biden chooses Kamala or another woman for Vice President running mate, we'll lose it to Trump. Not because such choices on Biden's part would be wrong--but because it won't get the Dems elected, not this time while we're trying to get Trump and Pence out of the White House in November. Please, no.

by Anonymousreply 305March 1, 2020 2:29 AM

by Anonymousreply 311March 1, 2020 2:38 AM

Bernie is on track to win Texas and California, which are far bigger states than South Carolina.

Biden won in South Carolina because black moderates absolutely love him. But there are very few states where black moderates are a big voting bloc.

You people picking out VP possibilities for Biden like they were china patterns should really stop for a moment and think this through.

by Anonymousreply 312March 1, 2020 2:39 AM

While Bernie seems to have the lead in most Texas polls, he and Biden aren't that far apart. Biden's performance tonight could give him some momentum to close the gap on Tuesday. However, early voting is exceeding 2016 levels, but not reaching 2008 levels. That means a lot of people have already voted prior to today. It's possible that Biden may not have received big numbers since all during the early voting period the media has been counting him out. And Texas Democrats have a habit of picking unelectable candidates, so Bernie should be a shoo-in.

by Anonymousreply 331March 1, 2020 2:53 AM

R327 Iowa was a squeaker. How can you freaking compare?

Also, drink every time John King says “go at the margins.” You’ll be on the floor in 5.

by Anonymousreply 332March 1, 2020 2:53 AM

R337 Ah, give it a rest. Bernie got more votes than Pete in Iowa. Peter barely won in delegates. (And the big story was the delated results of messed up process). Biden was supposed to win by 5% in South Carolina, it looks like he won by 30%. It's a huge story.

by Anonymousreply 333March 1, 2020 2:54 AM

r333, Pete was supposed to come in 4th place in Iowa after Bernie, Biden, and Warren. He beat them all.

by Anonymousreply 334March 1, 2020 2:56 AM

The VP has to meet all of the same qualifications as the President. Obama is no longer eligible because of the 22nd Amendment. Did any of you take Civics?

by Anonymousreply 335March 1, 2020 2:57 AM

Holy shit is anyone watching CNN.. did they just say Pete is considering dropping out???

by Anonymousreply 336March 1, 2020 2:58 AM

R334 He had fewer popular votes than Bernie. He did surprisingly well. But what happened to day in South Carolina is simply a bigger story.

by Anonymousreply 337March 1, 2020 2:59 AM

There is a theory that because the 22nd amendment states that a President can only be elected twice, that Obama could serve as VP, and he could take Biden's place if necessary, because he wouldn't be ELECTED to do so. He would not be able to run for re-election in that case, however.

This theory is completely untested, and would likely read as shenanigans to most Americans.

Aside from that, why would Obama want to be VP?

by Anonymousreply 338March 1, 2020 3:01 AM

I hope Pete does drop out. I know other supporters of his that have Bernie as their second choice.

by Anonymousreply 339March 1, 2020 3:01 AM

Did they, R336? If he is, then I hope its because Biden has offered him a potential job in his administration to do so.

by Anonymousreply 340March 1, 2020 3:02 AM

Of course many of us have, R335

[quote]No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once. But this Article shall not apply to any person holding the office of President, when this Article was proposed by the Congress, and shall not prevent any person who may be holding the office of President, or acting as President, during the term within which this Article becomes operative from holding the office of President or acting as President during the remainder of such term.

Now, tell me where the office holder of the VP is mentioned in here. The question is; What specifically prevents Biden from choosing Obama as his VP?

by Anonymousreply 341March 1, 2020 3:03 AM

[quote]Holy shit is anyone watching CNN.. did they just say Pete is considering dropping out???

Pete and Amy are both going to go soon. They’re just taking votes away from Biden at this point, and Biden needs to those votes to beat Sanders. They both know that Sanders is a path to disaster and needs to be defeated.

I suspect Biden will make deals with both of them. Amy will likely be Joe’s VP.

by Anonymousreply 342March 1, 2020 3:03 AM

R366 I saw a lot of their talking heads saying that he should consider dropping out, but in his speech tonight (which CNN didn't bother to show) he didn't give any indication of dropping out, and talked about Super Tuesday and beyond.

by Anonymousreply 343March 1, 2020 3:03 AM

We need someone BLACK as the VP, whether its Bernie or Biden. Stop with these delusional Pete as VP ideas.

by Anonymousreply 344March 1, 2020 3:03 AM

Bernie: Decriminalize border & cover undocumented for health care, let felons vote, ban death penalty, ban fracking, $55-60 trillion in new spending. We lose 48 states and Congress.

by Anonymousreply 345March 1, 2020 3:05 AM

FWIW, Biden needs Amy to stay in so she can win MN, which would likely go to Bernie otherwise

by Anonymousreply 346March 1, 2020 3:05 AM

Don't do it Pete, not until Monday afternoon!

Pete will be in my city Monday morning, and I was going to use that as an opportunity to seduce him!

by Anonymousreply 347March 1, 2020 3:06 AM

Do we need a black VP because the idea is that black people won't vote for an all white ticket? Or is it that white lefty, SJWs won't?

I am not opposed to a black VP, I am just curious. If Pete could bring his supporters over to Biden as VP, that would seem like a good plan, as he has consistently beat Warren and Amy, has more black support than Amy, and is from the midwest.

by Anonymousreply 348March 1, 2020 3:07 AM

[quote]We need someone BLACK as the VP, whether its Bernie or Biden. Stop with these delusional Pete as VP ideas.

No. Biden doesn’t need someone BLACK as his VP. He has very strong black support on his own.

He needs someone who can deliver the Midwest, bring out suburban women and moderates, and who is qualified to step in as President on day one If needed due to Biden’s age.

That candidate is Amy Klobuchar.

by Anonymousreply 349March 1, 2020 3:08 AM

R345 BS. Polls show Bernie, like Biden, beating Trump nationally and in the critical swing states. If Bernie nominated, he can win, and we need to support him 100%,

by Anonymousreply 350March 1, 2020 3:08 AM

by Anonymousreply 352March 1, 2020 3:11 AM

If he does drop out before Tuesday, there's no reason to do so unless he formally endorses Joe Biden.

by Anonymousreply 354March 1, 2020 3:13 AM

R352 Democrats need to stop this BS. If Bernie's nominated, he can win, and would accomplish a lot, to the degree the Congress allows. If you don't want Bernie, work for the candidate you like. If Joe's nominate, we support him. If Bernie's nominated, we support him.

by Anonymousreply 357March 1, 2020 3:18 AM

R357 I am voting for Warren in CA primary. I think she'd make the best President. It's called democracy.

Bullshit. Bernie will accomplish absolutely nothing. He has a 30 year track record in the Senate of doing absolutely nothing.

by Anonymousreply 365March 1, 2020 3:47 AM

Bernie is adamant about keeping the US out of foreign wars. Joe is, uh, not.

That is a pretty potent argument for a lot of people and some of you should acknowledge that. Trump will paint Biden as a warmonger, but he can't do that with Sanders.

South Carolina hasn't gone Democratic since 1960. It shouldn't even bother with a democratic primary.

by Anonymousreply 369March 1, 2020 3:54 AM

All the money and time wasted on these unimportant early-Primary states is completely absurd.

by Anonymousreply 370March 1, 2020 3:56 AM

R369 Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. No primary in FLA or Ohio or PA either. stupid

FYI, watching UCLA basketball in CA.... Steyer ad on TV. Guess they can't cancel them, eh?

[quote]It was an enormous blowout for Biden. The turnout was largely black, and Bernie has almost NO black support.

That rancid old mountebank Bernie Sanders will soon revive his stunningly anti-democratic line he tried in 2016 that "Voters in red states that won't go to a Democrat in the general election should NOT BE ALLOWED to choose our nominee!" Really like something Trump would say, but I imagine the craed Berners on Twitter are typing it RIGHT NOW!

by Anonymousreply 372March 1, 2020 4:00 AM

South Carolinians are brain-dead because of 200 years of conservative control of education. They literally can't read and don't understand anything that happens. Worrying about their opnion is like currying favor with an insect.

by Anonymousreply 374March 1, 2020 4:02 AM

So the Bros new tactic is to attack the Democratic voters of South Carolina because they didn't fall for Bernie's bullshit?

by Anonymousreply 375March 1, 2020 4:13 AM

First, kudos to R372 for using "mountebank".

Second, Pete has a rally scheduled in Dallas for Sunday evening, which I'm planning to attend. But I heard that it's possible it may be canceled. So it's possible something is up.

This thread will be fun to bump when Bernie wins the nomination!

by Anonymousreply 377March 1, 2020 4:19 AM

And it will be sad to bump when he loses in November!

by Anonymousreply 378March 1, 2020 4:20 AM

In a general, if Biden can’t win the black vote on his own no black VP can help him.

Biden/Buttigieg

by Anonymousreply 379March 1, 2020 4:22 AM

Biden peaked tonight in SC. He'll never have another result as victorious.

As for those promoting his choosing Clyburn as VP, Clyburn is 79 to Biden's 77.

by Anonymousreply 380March 1, 2020 4:22 AM

Bernie will not win the nomination. But the fucker will try to mount some type of Third-Party run, probably along with Tutsi Gabbard. They’re both assholes that want to disrupt everything as much as possible... to ensure another Trump term.

by Anonymousreply 381March 1, 2020 4:22 AM

R380 Bernie is 78 with a bum ticker. None of this makes sense.

by Anonymousreply 382March 1, 2020 4:29 AM

R380 He won by 30%. I don't think he'll need to repeat this "peak"....

by Anonymousreply 383March 1, 2020 4:29 AM

What tonight tells me is that there has to be some type of action(s) implemented to make the media accountable for what they do! The media is so consumed with the horse race rather than the substance of the candidates. From my memory this all really started when Gore was running for president. It's nothing but polls, polls, and more polls! Who is winning. Who is losing, etc.

In my opinion, this all runs the risks of affecting turnout, etc.

by Anonymousreply 384March 1, 2020 4:30 AM

It’s sad that Biden is really a default candidate. He needs as much help from others as he can get because he can’t carry himself. That doesn’t bode well for the General.

I voted for Pete. But if Biden has any chance of clinching the nomination, Obama needs to get his ass out to California and Texas to save him.

by Anonymousreply 385March 1, 2020 4:33 AM

There’s going to be a lot of uncertainty all the way through. Even if narrows down to Biden and Sanders... either one could die at any time before the Convention. Ideally they should each name their running mate as soon as possible to avoid a lot of chaos upon one of their deaths.

by Anonymousreply 386March 1, 2020 4:41 AM

Pete will win California!

by Anonymousreply 387March 1, 2020 4:41 AM

[quote][R352] Democrats need to stop this BS. If Bernie's nominated, he can win, and would accomplish a lot, to the degree the Congress allows.

Huh? Why do you think Bernie can win? He isn't bringing new non-voters to the polls in a primary race where those voting are FAR MORE liberal (allegedly) and likely to support him?

WHO exactly will be doing all of Bernie's heavy lifting legislatively? All those "corporatist and centrist" real Democrats he's been shitting all over since 2016? The same ones who endorsed Hillary and NOT HIM?

You're dreaming!

by Anonymousreply 390March 1, 2020 5:06 AM

No mater who the Dem nominee is, forget picking Pete, a black woman, a Latino man or anything in between.

The Dem presidential nominee needs to pick the most vicious pit bull attack dog killer available for vice-president. The only goal is to defeat Trump. Forget being black, white or nice. Pick the dirtiest most brutal motherfucker around who can relentlessly attack Trump. The Dems need to be mean, nasty and fucking explosive to defeat Trump. That’s how you win against mob boss criminal.

R338 "why would Obama want to be VP?:

To give Trump conniption fits and to get people out to vote. Plus, there's no reason he couldn't be elected VP, and once installed, bow out if he wanted to. Maybe Biden could install Michelle Obama, who he actually would like to be VP, if she wanted. Trump would blow a gasket, and on top of it, he'd be facing lawsuits from the states where he had businesses, which wouldn't be covered in case he tried to pardon himself before leaving office.

by Anonymousreply 398March 1, 2020 6:34 AM

Pundits seem to think Pete's supporters will automatically coalesce around Joe but I'm certainly not and I don't know any others that are either. Pete's not a moderate in the way that Joe Biden is, Pete actually cares about economic inequality and has plans to tackle it.

Pete is my first choice but Bernie's my second.

by Anonymousreply 399March 1, 2020 6:34 AM

R399 Stop lying, 90% of his supporters go to Biden.

by Anonymousreply 400March 1, 2020 6:36 AM

R400, I'm involved with Several Pete volunteer groups here in Austin. Talking to other Pete supporters I don't know how true that is.

by Anonymousreply 401March 1, 2020 6:38 AM

Biden's only reasonable path to victory:

-Wins Texas in Super Tuesday (since Sanders will be winning California)

-Wins approx half, or at least 1/3 the states in Super Tuesday (since Sanders is looking to most likely win at least over half)

-Have the other candidates coalesce onto him. Maybe not Warren, but at least Buttigieg, Klobuchar, Steyer, Bloomberg if possible.

-Gather political momentum onto further March and April primary states

-Overcome Sanders in delegates (South Carolina is a blip) within March or April

-End with a plurality since majority seems unlikely

-Sweetheart deal to Sanders/supporters

If he misses on 1-2 of these points that's alright,

Currently the race still favors Sanders. Even the delegate count still slightly favors Sanders. Super Tuesday will be anything from a lean to Sanders to a near bloodbath to everyone not him (there's a chance he won't be #1 but its practically not happening). All South Carolina has done is seemingly keep Biden in the game and not suspending his campaign before Super Tuesday (a 2nd might have done this as well, but 3rd would be it for him), but the big event may still have him underperform and leave Sanders the standout with the only way left to possibly stop him being a brokered convention.

South Carolina was about Biden more than anyone or anything else. Super Tuesday will decide most of the rest of the race.

by Anonymousreply 402March 1, 2020 6:53 AM

Thanks Chris Hayes @ r402!!!

by Anonymousreply 403March 1, 2020 6:57 AM

Michelle Obama doesn’t want anything to do with politics anymore. But what a campaign it would be if she ran against Trump. She’d kill it.

by Anonymousreply 404March 1, 2020 7:02 AM

*If he misses on 1-2 of these points that's alright, but keep in mind that he's still on thin ice no matter how big this primary win seems to some of you. Sanders' big Nevada win was a statement of 'yes, I can be electable' after 1-2 previous wins (however you see it). Biden's win is a statement of 'yes, I still deserve to be here'.

I did the checkup of polls and projections earlier with a friend for next week:

Note, much of this is approximate, especially considering how weak polling is in some states.

Winners (of 15 primaries): Sanders - 5-14 (rare chance of blowout) Biden - 1-8 (rare chance of having more states than Sanders) Bloomberg - 0-3 (rare chance to standout) Warren - 0-1 (may lose own state) Klobuchar - 0-1 (may win own state) Buttigieg - 0 (shows up all over, but never on winning level) Steyer - 0 (dead now?) Gabbard - 0 (dead now)

At least in viable range for state allocated delegates (15): Sanders - 15 (he's doing very well no matter what) Biden - 8 (he's doing okay not matter what, but maybe not enough) Bloomberg - 7 (he's doing somewhat okay no matter what, but likely inadequite for at least the time being) Warren - 1 (poor, even at risk of not being viable in California and missing that haul) Klobuchar - 1 (own state..) Buttigieg - 0 (!) Steyer - 0 Gabbard - 0

At least MAYBE viable (of 15): Sanders - 15 (is getting lots of success no matter what) Biden - 11 (looking to be a winner, but at least will get a haul) Bloomberg - 10 (can get a haul, even if not a winner) Warren - 9 (campaign may be helped by being viable in most of these, but she needs her own state and arguably needs viable in Cali) Klobuchar - 1 (own state.. that's it, she's out) Buttigieg - 6 (campaign might continue if he's viable in most of these?) Steyer - 0 Gabbard - 0

Placement in order of most likely to win the most valuable states: 1. Sanders (Cali, some others including VT, maybe a few others) 2. Biden (maybe Texas, maybe some other non-Cali top states) 3. Bloomberg (a couple shots at winning something) 4. Warren/Klobuchar (their own.. that's it; at most Warren will barely survive) 5. Buttigieg, Steyer, Gabbard (none, goodbye, sorry DL Pete fans)

-Biden might get a bump from South Carolina results, Sanders might get a dip, others likely get a dip -Sanders has strength almost everywhere except a few places that don't prefer him, Biden has strength in only half the states and the others reject him, Bloomberg has strength almost nowhere but has potential where he does -Warren has collapsed, with only a shot from maybe being viable in California and keeping her own state -Buttigieg has no route except to get some delegates and use them for something, Klobuchar has even less though she is on road to winning her own state -Steyer has almost nothing, Gabbard has nothing

by Anonymousreply 405March 1, 2020 7:05 AM

Sorry, just fixing my lists

Steyer - 0

Gabbard - 0

At least MAYBE viable (of 15):

Bloomberg - 10 (can get a haul, even if not a winner)

Warren - 9 (campaign may be helped by being viable in most of these, but she needs her own state and arguably needs viable in Cali)

by Anonymousreply 406March 1, 2020 7:07 AM

I never liked Biden, but Obama resurrected this old geezer in 2008. It’s up to him to huddle his ass to California and save us from Bernie.

by Anonymousreply 407March 1, 2020 7:09 AM

My mistake, Steyer has dropped out. Not that is matters. Gabbard's a non-entity so its practically down to 6 candidates for Super Tuesday.

Klobuchar is on a pointless journey by now. Buttigieg still lacks the minority support that would potentially put/keep him in a front running sort of place. Warren is lacking but her middling place has potential to either collapse soon or keep up some sort of speed (even if fueled just on bashing Bloomberg). Bloomberg is either the dark horse or paper tiger. The classic fight is back to Sanders and Biden, but with Sanders in the winning place for weeks now and Biden having to prove he has the chops.

R407 Biden's not going to win California. Its not going to even be close. The very best he will do, from this primary win bump and if he concentrates there, is to take enough of a placement that he'll be viable in the state. That might be worth it for him, but its probably more worth it by now to make appeals in all the states he has a better shot in, and leave Cali to hopefully (for him/anti-Sanders) to split the state delegate number between Sanders and Warren if she can muster it.

by Anonymousreply 408March 1, 2020 7:14 AM

Warren lacks minority support. She needs to go.

by Anonymousreply 409March 1, 2020 7:18 AM

California should be a win for Biden, but Californians love to hear about freebies.

I’m a Californian, but moved to Nevada and voted for Pete.

by Anonymousreply 410March 1, 2020 7:19 AM

I live in a pretty liberal bubble in South Carolina and know lefties both older and younger. None of them expressed any support for Bernie. They think he is too extreme, and has no chance in the general. I'm betting most of them went for Biden today, although the most visible candidate by far has been Tom steyer.

by Anonymousreply 411March 1, 2020 7:20 AM

R160: "I'm not surprised he seems down."

Uh, when has Sanders ever seemed 'up'?

by Anonymousreply 412March 1, 2020 7:23 AM

R405-406, thanks for that worthless analysis.

by Anonymousreply 413March 1, 2020 7:26 AM

Biden is the least wanted candidate of everyone I know. Hillary 2.0 if you will.

by Anonymousreply 414March 1, 2020 7:26 AM

R411 South Carolina is one of the few parts of the country where you can be a liberal young person today and not necessarily be out of place in supporting Biden. Add in that Sanders is the 2nd choice of more major candidates (Biden, Warren) and you have Sanders as the clear candidate of youth still, just especially more left youth.

Steyer's been the most visible because he dumped a lot of millions into the state all for naught.

by Anonymousreply 415March 1, 2020 7:27 AM

R413 almost nothing will move for Super Tuesday at this point, so not really 'useless'. Between high levels of advance polling and only a few days to digest the results, the most Biden can get out of this win is enough survival to potentially consolidate support in states already leaning him. He's kept himself in the game to hope for future funding, and perhaps a boost similar to Warren's recent debate success (but more solid). He's not winning over California from this. Results flip fast but not this fast.

by Anonymousreply 416March 1, 2020 7:30 AM

I -- and most analysts -- agree R416. Biden's probably not winning California -- but that doesn't mean Sanders is home free. Joe's got a huge surge of donations which should help...

by Anonymousreply 417March 1, 2020 7:36 AM

Yeah that analysis was worthless. It's not winner take all with delegates and if it's close, which most are expected to be, then it's more of a split than a win. Think Iowa.

by Anonymousreply 418March 1, 2020 7:41 AM

R414 And Bernie is anti-Hillary 2.0, still a treacherous bore the second time around.

by Anonymousreply 419March 1, 2020 7:42 AM

"The Democratic party is at an impasse that can best be observed by Joe Biden’s overwhelming win in South Carolina. I had the chance to spend the weekend in Columbia, South Carolina. What I found more than anything else was fear of a progressive agenda. Just the mention of the name, “Bernie Sanders” turned several voters I spoke with from gentle, almost passive, observers of the election into fierce and staunch opponents to the progressive from Vermont."

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 420March 1, 2020 7:46 AM

R117, not 'probably not', definitely not. They are no where near close in polling, Biden hasn't been campaigning in Super Tuesday states AT ALL, and has been focusing all his time and resources on getting this placement in South Carolina since it was so crucial to his survival at this point. He'll take what he can from Super Tuesday and if its too poor, possibly suspend, or if its as good as an overperforming result, use that as springboard into proper rivalry with Sanders. But that won't include winning California - it might not even include being viable in California.

The surge in donations is more truthful and meaningful than any California hopes. Too much early voting has been done already and some here are greatly overestimating a single win in South Carolina so soon to states that don't give a single crap what that state does. I am certain he will win states now as opposed to having a (slim) chance of winning none or just 1-2 if Sanders somehow won SC (the shock of getting at least the pop vote in the first 4 states in a row would have guaranteed a Sanders majority by the end, and he would dominate Super Tuesday).

by Anonymousreply 421March 1, 2020 8:01 AM

The Democratic Party has lived by identity politics and is likely to lose the election because it is too divided.

by Anonymousreply 422March 1, 2020 8:23 AM

[quote] Once again, black people are going to have to save the democratic party from itself.

by Anonymousreply 423March 1, 2020 9:45 AM

Pete does have Black support. It’s just that he doesn’t have 40 years of political insider experience to have cultivated 40 years of black support.

by Anonymousreply 424March 1, 2020 11:56 AM

Biden really needs to eat into Bernie's leads in Texas and California. That is a must. I'm worried that Bloomberg, Pete and Elizabeth will eat into his support. It sure would be nice if Steyer would endorse him and support him financially. Terry Mc Cauliffe will announce his endorsement of Biden before Virginia votes, so that's good. I worry because there's no guarantee Warren or Pete supporters would support Biden over Bernie.

by Anonymousreply 425March 1, 2020 12:14 PM

I'm in a Super Tuesday state. I already voted for Pete, but I would support Biden over Bernie.

I would support any of them over Bernie, except Tulsi.

by Anonymousreply 426March 1, 2020 12:16 PM

Last week, the idiotic Bernie Bro Bolsheviks were proclaiming victory and that Bernie was the candidate. This, after 3 states that contain 2.5% of the US population, had their caucuses or primaries.

Are the Bernie Bolsheviks and AOC really that insane to think that these small states are going to dictate the nomination, when heavyweights like TX, CA, NY, PA haven't even weighed in yet? They really do lack critical thinking skills.

by Anonymousreply 427March 1, 2020 12:24 PM

"The Democratic Party has lived by identity politics and is likely to lose the election because it is too divided."

Yes, indeed. That and the purity tests that each candidate except Bernie have to adhere. Not only must they pass the purity test, but when they fail, they must be completely and totally humiliated, like Warren, Biden, Mayor Pete, Klobuchar, everybody except Bernie. Why is Bernie so special? I smell a rat, and its definitely coming from the Bernie camp,

by Anonymousreply 428March 1, 2020 12:29 PM

Right and should be able to beat Bernie and California on two issues:

Bernie accepted NRA blood money and voted against the Brady bill. That’s a nonstarter in California.

Joe Biden was vice president when marriage equality passed. Bernie is unelectable and Trump will have a shot at naming another justice to the Supreme Court. The solvency of marriage equality is on the ballot.

by Anonymousreply 429March 1, 2020 12:40 PM

Biden not Right. Damn spellcheck

by Anonymousreply 430March 1, 2020 12:41 PM

Why do I feel, that with Biden or Sanders, we’ll have another John Kerry election?

[Quote] The Democratic Party has lived by identity politics and is likely to lose the election because it is too divided.

by Anonymousreply 432March 1, 2020 12:46 PM

Joe needs Julian Castro. He's really smart, and he'd do a great job campaigning and we really need to Latino vote. They're the new majority. Julian will get Black support and I'm sick and tired of the way Latinos keep supporting Republicans because so many are Evangelicals. Julian foolishly became a one issue candidate with too much focus on Immigration. But when you listened to him talk you realized he's very knowledgeable in other areas.

by Anonymousreply 433March 1, 2020 12:49 PM

R432, yeah but the GOP is not divided over its identity. So it's going to win. Suck it up lefty!

by Anonymousreply 434March 1, 2020 12:52 PM

It's ridiculous to say the Republicans aren't ruled by identity politics when being anti-gay is written explicitly into their platform. They're anti women, anti immigrant, racist, etc. Hate against all sorts of identities is what brings Republicans together. They're all about identity politics.

A party "divided over its identity" is NOT what identity politics are and if you're too stupid to understand that then you'd do well to just not even try to discuss politics at all. It's obviously too advanced for you.

by Anonymousreply 435March 1, 2020 12:54 PM

If Bernie wins Massachusetts on Tuesday, how does Warren deal with it?

by Anonymousreply 436March 1, 2020 12:54 PM

One thing I'm convinced of. If Joe gets the nomination, he will break new ground with his VP choice. It will be a woman, and it may very well be a person of color. The truth is that Klobuchar is closest to him in her policy positions. But she is about as exciting as Tim Kaine without his guitar. So no.

Truthfully, the smartest choice would be Elizabeth. She will get a lot of Bernie people to come along. But the chemistry wouldn't work. I don't think Biden has the stamina to spend every waking moment arguing with Elizabeth once he becomes President. Biden needs someone who will run and win in 2024 because he or Bernie would be a one term POTUS.

by Anonymousreply 437March 1, 2020 12:55 PM

I read you needed to change your party affiliation by Jan 30th in order to do that, R444. Seems like many people may have missed that window.

by Anonymousreply 445March 1, 2020 1:30 PM

r445 If that's true than that's way too much work for vast majority to want to go to to ratfuck.

by Anonymousreply 446March 1, 2020 1:32 PM

Black voters in SC “showing up” means shit. SC isn’t competitive in November. Let’s see if black voters in WI and MI show up and who they show up for. They stayed home in 2016 and we lost.

by Anonymousreply 447March 1, 2020 1:39 PM

R444/R445 -- Someone on MSNBC last night was claiming this was the case in heavily GOP districts but it was unclear whether they were speculating or saying something based on fact.

by Anonymousreply 448March 1, 2020 1:40 PM

No one is choosing Amy as their VP. She's barely hanging on. She's only waiting for for Minnesota to give her a slight "surge" so that she can crow about her miniscule victory and screech that she's going all the way to the top!

by Anonymousreply 449March 1, 2020 1:40 PM

r447 They showed up for Biden but not Sanders

by Anonymousreply 450March 1, 2020 1:43 PM

Amy for VP will depend on how confident Dems feel about being able to hold on to her Senate seat.

That math works in Kamala's favor.

by Anonymousreply 451March 1, 2020 1:44 PM

Sanders’ people are not turning out in an impressive matter, not improving upon 2016. His voters are very zealous, but not too wide. They are a loud minority

by Anonymousreply 452March 1, 2020 1:48 PM

And they are loud in the places that lazy journalists hang out (Twitter) and frequently have overlapping social circles, so their loudness gets amplified to make it seem much bigger than it is.

by Anonymousreply 453March 1, 2020 1:57 PM

It's time for Pete and Amy to drop out. They have no path to the nomination at this point.

Warren needs to stay in awhile longer to siphon off votes from Sanders.

That's why the vote last night IS important. It sent out the message of what MUST be done. Look... (referring back to R181) Black people KNOW what this Trump Administration is about. Do you know how many Black Ministers have lost their church or who are on the verge of losing them because they support(ed) Trump. Just look at two examples of Pastors who were VERY vocal about their Trump support; John Gray--He has lost his reality show; his church has been evicted; and his congregation is hemorrhaging members. The other example is Mark Burns--he's TOTALLY changed his rhetoric because he and his whole family have been so ostracized by the Black community. No one has heard much from him lately.

And then, there is this MESS below! Black folk are LIVID over this!!! These people are done. It's just a matter of time and it won't be very long either.

Any appointment would go through the governor, Tim Walz, who's an old-school DFL guy. And Tina Smith showed they're willing to hang on to an appointed candidate.

Money would be on either Angie Craig, a freshman congresswoman who's also a lez, or the lieutenant governor, Peggy Flanagan, who would be the first Native American woman in the Senate...after Warren, of course.

To be honest this is my sense: Biden was always expected to win South Carolina obviously. He seemed to be flatlining for awhile with the rather subpar results in IA, NH, NV - the Clyburn endorsement was one out of personal loyalty and it helped deliver him the big-margin win. How many people took that and thought "yeah, we also owe Joe this one"

Klobuchar is the best choice. It really needs to be one of the current Presidential candidates who has already been vetted. Voters know that Biden is not likely to finish his term...so the VP needs to be someone ready to step into the Presidency at any moment.

Picking an unknown Governor like Whitmer, or a failed State Congresswoman like Stacey Abrams... is not what he needs on the ticket.

by Anonymousreply 486March 1, 2020 3:18 PM

Biden wins his first primary in 3 presidential campaigns and suddenly the media wants everyone to rally around him and support him? Where was that energy when Buttigieg won Iowa?

by Anonymousreply 487March 1, 2020 3:43 PM

I don't get these all one-way tickets. Biden/Klobuchar would be a big fuck you to progressives. Bernie/Warren would be a big fuck you to moderates. I don't know why anyone wants to make that big fuck you to one wing of the party going into a general election.

by Anonymousreply 488March 1, 2020 3:45 PM

To those of you who can't seem to let Biden's "gaffes" go, I give you this, what's worse:

Biden getting tongue tied or making a verbal misstep like everyone does or our current President who says things like there are good people on both sides when referring to white supremacists.

And you might answer that by saying that you're just tired of old white guys running for president. Well guess what... that's what we got and this time that's what we're gonna get.

You don't like Pete for some strange reason and he's not an old white guy. But he doesn't hiss and sass like Foxy Brown so he's not gay enough or "queer" enough. Fuck y'all.

Warren kinda did herself in by checking Twitter everyday to see what the keyboard activists are pushing, and she's no spring chicken either. But let's blame sexism and misogyny for a badly run campaign. Fuck y'all again.

You can't let Amy's staplers and choice of food utensils go.

So that leaves us with Trump who is an idiot, Bernie who is a grifter, or Biden or Bloomie who ain't perfect but they will at least bring some normalcy back to the White House. You got four white guys over 70.

Play with the hand that you're dealt.

by Anonymousreply 489March 1, 2020 3:46 PM

No, the media just wants the horse race to continue rather than seeing Bernie run away with it, R487. They have no special goodwill towards Joe Biden. They need a challenger to Bernie and he’s the one who presents the best opportunity. They were in love with Bernie in 2016 for the same reason.

by Anonymousreply 490March 1, 2020 3:47 PM

R490 I don't think that the majority of the media cares who wins. They want drama. If Super Tuesday could result in a 6 way tie for delegates, and this could all drag on into a brokered convention the media would come all over themselves from excitement.

by Anonymousreply 491March 1, 2020 3:56 PM

The worst thing Biden could do would be to name a VP. HE has momentum, not a lock. Would look so arrogant and fuel the remaining candidates.

by Anonymousreply 492March 1, 2020 4:01 PM

Man, the reaches some of you are making.

Biden was expected to win SC. He was even expected to win big. But this expected to happen after winning at least 1-2 of the other contests (likely Iowa and Nevada) and with a strong polling winning polling position going to Super Tuesday. SC was then meant to be the signal that this is in the bag for him, with ST being the delegate seal on the whole thing.

This win has happened after a 3-state losing streak (Nevada being the most hopeful of this, but still a big loss). This is going into a Super Tuesday which will at least, almost certainly, be in Sanders' favor, and quite possibly enough in his favor to confirm he will have at least the plurality of delegates (that is, the MOST SUPPORT) in the convention.

What Biden has here isn't a sign of victory, its a sign he may still survive. The degree of his victory is meaningful, but not that meaningful because SC doesn't matter in the general - it won't flip blue, period. You can take from this win that Biden might have a shot at front-running again, Sanders cannot assume to simply run away with this (but he may still run away, just not 'simply'), and that the other candidates are on terrible grounds (even Buttigieg after his initial performances) until some bright light signs on them from ST results.

Sanders may have to learn that he can't do this without enough support of the conservative south, but this could end up just being a campaign lesson that he works at over the next months as he still wins. Biden is learning that while he has kept support of the conservative south, he's still very unpopular elsewhere beyond his worst expectations, so he needs to take that campaign lesson and improve a lot, quickly, or else still be overtaken by Sanders.

ALL CAPS! titles cheering for Biden should reserve for if he wins Texas and half or more of ST states and is close enough to Sanders in delegates. That's something to actually work with. SC alone is potentially enough to qualify only as a last gasp of his campaign as he nods downwards and ends in March. If he wants to win, he needs to appeal to enough Democrats to win, and he needs other candidates to drop out, endorse, and push for him. He's arguably the only one left with the math left to do so.

Despite what seems to be way too bizarrely a consensus here, a brokered convention where non-Sanders delegates and supers overtake Sanders on a second round of voting is very unlikely to happen and is more of a bluff unless Sanders really slips downward (while still leading) over the months. Biden would have to argue that he could, with say Warren or Bloomberg's delegates alone, he'd have more than Sanders'. He'd have to argue not to the DNC (oh they'd love to drop Sanders) but the public, successfully, that Sanders is the demonstrably worst nomination-heading candidate the party has ever seen. Otherwise, sure, you'd get Biden to represent you on the debate stage with Trump, just for Trump to relentlessly mocking Biden as a 'cheater' of democracy, discount any indictments any Democrats have done towards him, and by that point the public will FINALLY BELIEVE IT. Do not underestimate the self-destructive power of party heads overruling a democratic result. So Biden has to do better, always better, with every step/week of this.

by Anonymousreply 493March 1, 2020 4:03 PM

Apologies for grammatical mistakes above - it was hastily typed.

by Anonymousreply 494March 1, 2020 4:08 PM

After that screed R493, who are you supporting?

by Anonymousreply 495March 1, 2020 4:10 PM

R492 Absolutely true. He needs to perform well enough in ST and even past that before he even considers announcing a VP. He needs to be at least nearing the place of acquiring presumptive nominee status, and the VP pick needs to help in unifying the party. I'm not saying he can never do it, just that early March at this point would be very foolish.

by Anonymousreply 496March 1, 2020 4:11 PM

totally disagree that Bernie is a grifter or selfish in any way like Trump is selfish. You may not like him, his candidacy has a lot of risks, I know. But it's bullshit to pretend that he is anything like Trump when it comes to corruption or being driven by purely selfish motives. He clearly has an ideology and a belief in a particular vision for this country, and for everyone. For Trump there is absolutely nothing there but greed and stupid grievances and a constant whiny neediness. Nothing else.

For Bernie, it's a much larger picture. You may not like that picture, but it's stupid to pretend that you dislike him for being a grifter. You don't.

by Anonymousreply 497March 1, 2020 4:13 PM

R495 - Sorry you found that annoying. The candidate? Sanders. But its a bit more than that.

-I'm Canadian, so a) you can choose to disregard me even though your politics stomps right on ours, b) I choose to not be that emotionally invested in your politics, and me typing a lot of my thoughts shouldn't be mistaken for me being too passionate or irrational.

-I think Sanders has significant flaws, and potentially losing flaws that risk the election. I just also think that say, too many older citizens keep highly overestimating the risks here, as I saw them do for Obama, and I think they're underestimating the flaws and risks of others like Biden and Buttigieg.

-I actually think Biden is the flatly most conventionally electable candidate still actively running, though his position on this has been nearly toppled until SC (and SC only keeps him on by the fingertips for now, with hopes for ST), and running 'conventionally' against Trump is arguably a bigger risk than otherwise. Republicans will have their knack for knowing exactly where and how to target - legitimately or illegitimately - to get their damn win and you need someone who can potentially swamp right over those tactics instead of arrogantly bypass or minimize these problems like I saw Clinton do in several ways, and Biden mostly do so far in these primaries. Biden has shown he knows how to shore up support... and that's about it for now.

-Above ALL else, ALL other concerns including my bias for or against candidates, I want one of most of the candidates (I've plunged in desire for Buttigieg and dipped a lot for Warren, but still) to have a powerful unity AND energy going to the general. This can't be done just by me personally saying 'hey sides, get along'. This has to be done by enough over there in America not tripping everyone else over. It means centrists actually understanding that there is a sea change happening in political culture that they can't just pretend isn't happening or that its taboo to even consider is more than a rude old man pointing fingers. It means leftists and progressives getting that they can consider the system broken but still take their Ws... and their Ls gracefully when it comes to it. I actually believe in ideological and political testing in primaries, I wish Canada took this approach much more, but the desperation levels your candidates get to as the contests proceed and campaigns run out of steam is ridiculous. The only candidate I can think of being an exception to my tolerance is Bloomberg. I hated the man before and I despise him enough now that if I was American I think I would at least strongly consider sitting it out or even protesting if he overturned a pluralty for *anyone*, not just Sanders. The rest? Eh, ultimately, plugged nose and vote.

by Anonymousreply 498March 1, 2020 4:26 PM

R497 What you expressed is that I've guessed is actually the consensus in most political circles in Washington. That isn't to say that he doesn't have a few long-term allies, nor more than a few huge enemies, but the ones there just to do their fundraising and keeping their cushy jobs that help them perpetuate a world state of stability - for its better or worse - don't hate Sanders, they just know they very much disagree with him and his theory of change. They know he isn't actually going to start a communist revolution. They also know that for all his increasing bluster, he prefers to make real deals far more than Trump has ever boasted.

So to see the spitting hate towards him in a few corners online is not just weird, its really ridiculous. I easily flash back to the PUMA faction of Hillary superfans towards Obama, looking for anything and everything to take him down, including fully Republican talking points or even lies and myths.

by Anonymousreply 499March 1, 2020 4:30 PM

R499 Yep, that PUMA faction caused Obama to lose the general election... oh, wait...

Does the Bernie Bro screaming Biden didn't win NH and Iowa understand just how many people participated in the Iowa caucus? If he did then he'd be embarrassed to even bring it up as an example.

And the only reason why NH, Vermont's neighbor, is considered a swing state is because once in over 30 years it voted for a republican president (bush in 2000). It's not a swing state.

R531, "And the only reason why NH, Vermont's neighbor, is considered a swing state" "It's not a swing state".

Ok gramps.

by Anonymousreply 532March 1, 2020 7:04 PM

The hillbots that handed the election to Trump have a new loser to place their hopes in.

by Anonymousreply 533March 1, 2020 7:05 PM

It's not a swing state, r532. The only republican presidential candidate to win over past 30 years was Bush in 2000 and even he lost the state as an incumbent.

Notice it's always the bots that don't know how to quote properly.

[quote]Biden won so huge because of the Clyburn endorsement

So true. Clyburn saved his ass and it was disrespectful for Biden to get up on that stage last night and refer to him as “My buddy Jim.”

by Anonymousreply 535March 1, 2020 7:18 PM

R483, Near the end of the Chris Wallace interview, Biden referred to Trump twice as "the staple genius".

Was he confusing Trump with Mitt Romney, who bailed out STAPLES when he was with Bain Capital?

by Anonymousreply 536March 1, 2020 7:19 PM

NH was super close in 2016. The fact that they rejected Biden so completely is worrying.

by Anonymousreply 537March 1, 2020 7:20 PM

R489 How pathetic is it that our choices for President at the moment seem to be Biden, Bernie and Trump. This country can’t do better than this? Really??

Democrats will not vote for a child molester in 2020. Sorry Joe

R521 Umm.... the past three plus years we've been seeing relentless pearl-clutching about the Hillbilly Elegy voters... the forgotten white voters of PA, MI, WI (and the forever unattainable Ohio). The "real Americans" of the rural flyover states that the "elite" ignore at their peril... as though black people in cities are not "real Americans."

Bernie can win PA and MI. He can win the general election... but I am way weary of the Bernie Bros discounting the "old black voters" of SC who were suckered into voting for Biden. It's really not a good look for self-righteous white men to claim to know who black folk should or should not vote for.

by Anonymousreply 542March 1, 2020 7:42 PM

R536 - he had recently spoken with Amy on the phone.

R347 here... Pete's event in my city is canceled, and it's being reported he's on his way now to South Bend to formally end his campaign.

Now I'll never get a chance to meet him, and make him fall in love with me.

by Anonymousreply 544March 1, 2020 10:32 PM

I just received an email from Pete's campaign saying his event schedule for tonight here in Dallas has been canceled as well.

Where is that freak Bernie troll who insisted Bernie was going to win the black vote?

by Anonymousreply 547March 1, 2020 10:57 PM

R546 Bernie will win MI by 10 points. PA, not so much.

Chick on CNN just said that Pete was worried about Bloomberg "syphooning" votes from moderates. She obviously mis-spoke, but I am going to start using that.

Pete Buttigieg is dropping out

The former mayor made the decision after he struggled to compete in South Carolina's primary and had little path toward success on Super Tuesday, aides say

Buttigieg: I'm not running to be 'the gay president'

by Anonymousreply 550March 1, 2020 11:18 PM

On Twitter a lot of previously declared Warren supporters are coming out for Biden today. I’m surprised. I thought they’d go for Bernie

I'm watching Bernie supporter Sam Seder on Youtube.

He clearly knows that it will be an uphill race to get the nomination since Mayor Pete has dropped out.

I'm assuming that Biden will start to beat Sanders late in March or early April.

by Anonymousreply 557March 1, 2020 11:34 PM

Yeah let this be a lesson that early voting, especially in a volatile campaign with so many candidates is a big mistake. The voter above inadvertently helped Bernie Sanders increase his lead in CA, which I am sure is the opposite of his intention.

[quote]Can candidates who withdraw pledge their votes to someone else?

Yes. After the delegation from New York got to vote for her at the 2008 convention, Hillary released her delegates to Obama. It was symbolic, but it was a rather potent symbol of unity.

Elizabeth Warren @ewarren : Thank you, @PeteButtigieg . I know you'll continue giving back and serving our country for many years to come.

Cory Booker @CoryBooker : I continue to be grateful for the groundbreaking, historical campaign of @PeteButtigieg. Thank you for the grit, grace and commitment to country you so brilliantly displayed in your run. You have made this nation better.

Ana Navarro-Cárdenas @ananavarro :Thank you, @PeteButtigieg. You made history. You set an example of courage and honesty. You inspired many of us, particularly the LGBTQ community & their allies. You taught us to pronounce “Buttigieg”. And you did it all with such grace.

I want them all on constant, coordinated, scripted attack against Republican policies. And for healthcare, climate policy, jobs, education, and normal judges.

I want them on all the shows, on all the podcasts, on SNL making fun of Orange, writing op-eds, protesting child incarceration and at Republican rallies. I want them in TV and radio ads along with the candidate.

All of them. Buttigieg, O'Rourke, Harris, Klobuchar, Warren, Castro, Booker, Yang, the Colorado one, the Montana one, Gillibrand, Inslee, Patrick, Swalwell. Because we really are all in it together at this point. I want it to look actually united.

I’m for any Democratic candidate who can unseat Trump. I’ll be happy with Biden or Bloomberg. As for VP, I don’t like Amy Klobuchar, but if she brings more votes in, that will help. I think she’s wrong about healthcare, we can afford Medicare for all. Also, I didn’t like her crack about Pete’s speeches being “flowery”. (It was a dog whistle to her homophobic upper Midwest constituents.)

I admire Elizabeth Warren, but she’s most effective in the senate. She needs to be there. She’s smart, tough and formidable. I’d love to see her as the majority whip of the senate. She’ll wield more power in the senate for the long run.

Chicago Tribune: Citing the strength of his experience on foreign policy, Illinois U.S. Sen. Tammy Duckworth endorsed former Vice President Joe Biden on Monday morning.

“Joe has a proven record of not just promising to help the little guy and communities of color like Donald Trump, but Joe actually delivers for them — he’s earned our trust,” Duckworth said. “I’m supporting Joe Biden because he will unite our party and country, restore dignity to the White House and rebuild trust in our government with decency, optimism and experience.”

Michael Moore Brushes Off Biden’s First Primary Win: ‘South Carolina Is Not Representative of the US’

Speaking with MSNBC’s Ari Melber, Moore said the Democratic establishment was growing increasingly frightened of Sanders’ candidacy, and was the driving reason behind the abrupt endorsement of Biden by three of his 2020 rivals — Pete Buttigieg, Amy Klobuchar, and Beto O’Rourke — on the eve of the Super Tuesday primaries.

“This is a Hail Mary move to let’s get them all on the stage tonight,” Moore said. “Whatever discussions went on before yesterday, they were convinced that this is the move. They should have been allowed to go through the election tomorrow and have their voters vote for them. This is what bothers me about really either party. But I hate to see it in either party where we want to take the right of the people to have their say and that’s tomorrow. Whether they want Biden or Bernie or Pete or Amy. But we’re going to take that away.”

Melber then played a past clip of Moore on his show, where he doubted Biden’s electability and touted Sanders’ ability to appeal to young and minority voters.

“Joe Biden is the center. He’s this year’s Hillary,” Moore said back in October 2019. “He’s not going to excite the base to get out there and vote on November 3rd, 2020. Seventy percent of the people voting are women, people of color, that’s 70%.”

Melber then pressed Moore about Biden’s first-ever, big primary win on Saturday” “How do you square that with South Carolina?”

“South Carolina is not representative of the United States, that’s just a fact,” Moore said. “It will have absolutely no impact on the November 3rd election. It is still the same, it’s 70% of those eligible this November are young people, are people of color and are women. They’re going to decide the election. And so what we have now are three primaries or caucuses that Bernie either won or tied and then Saturday. For people tonight to just get so excited about ‘𝑶𝒉, 𝑩𝒊𝒅𝒆𝒏 𝒇𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒚 𝒉𝒂𝒅 𝒂 𝒘𝒊𝒏, 𝒂𝒇𝒕𝒆𝒓 32 𝒚𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒔 𝒓𝒖𝒏𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒑𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒊𝒅𝒆𝒏𝒕.'”
