Gay bar customer bitching that Percy Sledge singing "When a man loves a woman" is wrong in a gay bar and bigoted

I was in a city centre gay bar in the UK earlier this week and somebody had put on the jukebox Percy Sledge "When a man loves a woman ". Two tables away from me I could hear a young guy aged around 20 saying that it was wrong to play such a song in a gay bar, then went on to argue when talking to the guy sitting with him that the bar owners or jukebox makers should have "Heterosexual hegemony promoting songs removed from jukeboxes sold to LGBT venues " and further went on to expand his argument saying such songs are an insult and have no place in the modern world as they are bigoted and holding back progress in society.

I was gobsmacked at what I was hearing but did not but into the conversation with my opinion that he was talking rubbish. Perhaps I should have done. I really hope this kind of strange thinking is not commonplace amongst the younger generation. I could not believe how outraged and angry he was over this song.

Does he want the world to be dull, monochrome and grey without character and fun??

Thoughts on his opinions and attitude?

by Anonymousreply 72March 3, 2020 5:38 AM

At Michfest I think there was a rule that no music featuring male vocalists could be played.

by Anonymousreply 1February 28, 2020 2:56 AM

A gay bar is the one place were gays get a break from the 95% of the world that is hetero, in movies, music, advertising and social gatherings. The world is not dull just become one bar doesn't play sappy hetero normative love songs.

by Anonymousreply 2February 28, 2020 2:57 AM

God I'd rather hear Percy Sledge than some dumb teen singing about her empowered snatch!

by Anonymousreply 3February 28, 2020 2:58 AM

I would argue the song should be pulled because it's so dreadfully boring and played out.

by Anonymousreply 4February 28, 2020 2:59 AM

r2 It is an overzealous mindset and it was a GAY man who selected it on the jukebox.

by Anonymousreply 5February 28, 2020 3:01 AM

MARY!!

by Anonymousreply 6February 28, 2020 3:01 AM

OP is the kind of person that thinks it's her right to throw a bachelorette party and drag everyone to the gay bar invading their space getting drunk off their ass and demanding they dance with them.

by Anonymousreply 7February 28, 2020 3:02 AM

Really r1??? 😯😟

by Anonymousreply 8February 28, 2020 3:02 AM

r7 Try again pal I am a gay man.

by Anonymousreply 9February 28, 2020 3:02 AM

OP is typing from Wales.

by Anonymousreply 10February 28, 2020 3:05 AM

As long as it's also ok to play a Coon song in a bar full of black people. Assuming I am black of course.

by Anonymousreply 11February 28, 2020 3:05 AM

Different bars play different music. A piano bar is not going to play heavy metal. A punk rock bar is not going to play Kathie Lee Gifford's Greatest Hits. I think it's not out of line for a gay bar to pass on shitty hero love songs.

by Anonymousreply 13February 28, 2020 3:08 AM

Not far off it r10 but a tad more to the north in England.

by Anonymousreply 14February 28, 2020 3:08 AM

This never happened.

by Anonymousreply 15February 28, 2020 3:11 AM

[quote]I was gobsmacked at what I was hearing but did not but into the conversation with my opinion that he was talking rubbish.

Especially as you talk even worse rubbish like this lame made up story.

by Anonymousreply 16February 28, 2020 3:12 AM

OP is 75 years Senior.

by Anonymousreply 17February 28, 2020 3:13 AM

Is it supposed to be funny?

by Anonymousreply 18February 28, 2020 3:19 AM

OP is worried about what kind of music is not played in a gay bar?

[bold]First World Problems

by Anonymousreply 19February 28, 2020 3:23 AM

R11 Stupid and false equivalence. A hetero love song is not homophobic or making fun of gay men. A "cooing" IS designed to denigrate black people.

by Anonymousreply 20February 28, 2020 3:35 AM

Nope r18 It is supposed to be mildly worrying where such a censorous over zealous mindset will take society.

by Anonymousreply 21February 28, 2020 3:42 AM

r16 You are cynical and incorrect.

by Anonymousreply 22February 28, 2020 3:43 AM

It's totally made up, gurl.

You're a silly Billy.

by Anonymousreply 23February 28, 2020 4:03 AM

Then I guess we can't listen to "My Man." Streisand or Lea.

Or "The Man That Got Away."

by Anonymousreply 24February 28, 2020 4:24 AM

Why is Percy Sledge being played in a gay bar in 2020?

I mean, I love his music but...

by Anonymousreply 25February 28, 2020 4:33 AM

I never liked that song, r25.

by Anonymousreply 26February 28, 2020 4:34 AM

Like the guy in question, lots of these SJWs are college-aged. Most will probably grow out of it, I think.

by Anonymousreply 27February 28, 2020 4:40 AM

r24 Good question

by Anonymousreply 28February 28, 2020 5:24 AM

That’s one of those songs that always seem to go on forever and suck the air out of the room. Like Hotel California. So it’s far from a favourite. But I’m impressed there is any city centre gay bar that plays anything other than Eurodisco shit. He sounds an insufferable little idiot but will probably grow out of it.

by Anonymousreply 29February 28, 2020 6:35 AM

I really hate that song, but I hate SJWs even more...hmmm.

by Anonymousreply 30February 28, 2020 6:45 AM

First World Problem.

by Anonymousreply 31February 28, 2020 6:58 AM

“Percy Sledge singing "When a man loves a woman" is wrong in a gay bar”

BITCH, PLEASE! Half the guys in that gay bar think they’re the woman in that song.

by Anonymousreply 32February 28, 2020 9:12 AM

I never did, r32. I hate that song.

by Anonymousreply 33February 28, 2020 9:16 AM

The bright side is that it wasn't the Michael Bolton version.

by Anonymousreply 34February 28, 2020 9:31 AM

[quote]...and it was a GAY man who selected it on the jukebox.

You sure about that?

by Anonymousreply 35February 28, 2020 10:06 AM

What a ridiculous trolling story.

I am exhausted with reading stupid shit like this.

I want to tell you guys a quick story, it’s a better AND far worse story than this one, the reasons why, coming right up.

As the industrial revolution changed the way we lived, migration started happening in mass. Ships carried in immigrants from Europe, people of money traveled, taking long voyages in trains, ships, and had cars, for the first time ever. Eventually, they were on planes.

At this time Jews had been living in Europe for hundreds and hundreds of years, and as the industrial revolution progressed, they to, found themselves in different countries, continents, etc.

After WW I, a man named Adolph Hitler came on the scene. He started getting notoriety, by giving public speeches in taverns, town hall, and city squares. And his message to the people of Germany? It went something like what is very close to messaging here on DL. Just delete a few words, insert “Jew” or “Jews”, participating in the drudgery or joy, of everyday life.

Everything that was wrong with the world, and specifically wrong on Europe, and Germany, according to Adolf Hitler, was the fault of Jews.

Eventually, after almost a decade of drumming this message into the minds and eventually the hearts of Germans, Hitler rose to power, and formed a true, Totalitarian State.

He managed to accomplish something no other anti Semite ever had, and the industrial revolution unwittingly helped him in doing so. Little by little, technology was co opted by Hitler, and his messaging played relentlessly in movie theaters, radio, and eventually, in classrooms, houses of worship, hospitals, factories, etc.

This led to what is the largest genocide to take place in our former century. 6 million Jews, gypsies, gays, and mentally and/or physically disabled Europeans were gathered up, place in cattle trains, and murdered at concentration camps.

This all started with sending out a message. The message specifically had a complaint, a problem which needed a solution, and eventually, those who were brainwashed into this ideology, were as convinced as Hitler, that the ONLY solution, was a FINAL SOLUTION.

Today, there are people all over the internet, following a play by play manual, a guide, fashioned by authoritarians and dictators of past and present days. This ideology seeks to separate us, it seeks to highlight our differences, and it seeks to make those differences absolutely INTOLERABLE to one another. It does this, because authoritarianism, leading to totalitarianism, cannot germinate, take root, and grow as a solid movement, without separation of the people it seeks to control. And now, it is here, on this thread, and all over DL.

If any of you doubt what I am saying, take a few weeks to sit down, and specifically study Hitler’s life. Then, start studying WW 1 and 2. Start understanding how the Holocaust came to be. And you REALLY SHOULD DO SO, BECAUSE IF ANY OF TOU HERE BELIEVE THAT TOTALITARIANISM WILL PROTECT YOU BECAUSE YOU ARE A GAY, WHITE MALE OR WOMAN, OR BECAUSE YOU ARE A TEEN, TROLLING GAY SITES, IN ORDER TO INCITE DIVISIVE DISCOURSE, YOU, MY FRIEND, WOULD BE VERY WRONG.

Try understanding and loving one another. This shit can, might and will literally KILL YOU.

Have a great day, bitches.

by Anonymousreply 36February 28, 2020 10:48 AM

its an awful song. But heckling and mocking it while it’s playing is a better response than some form of gay cancel culture.

by Anonymousreply 37February 28, 2020 10:55 AM

I'm amazed they still have that song in a jukebox, gay or straight.

by Anonymousreply 38February 28, 2020 10:56 AM

[quote]I'm amazed they still have that song in a jukebox, gay or straight.

It's a made up story and as you can see from the comments here it is hardly a gay fave.

What sort of jukeboxes do they still have anywhere?

by Anonymousreply 39February 28, 2020 10:58 AM

I’m way ok with het free zones.

by Anonymousreply 40February 28, 2020 11:03 AM

What R39 said.

by Anonymousreply 41February 28, 2020 11:05 AM

He sounds overzealous, but he has a point. It may be default tracks for any bar - but it's not just any bar or pub.

It's a weird choice to have in a gay bar - outdated, slow and painfully straight.

I understand he was probably over the top, but he does have a point.

by Anonymousreply 42February 28, 2020 3:10 PM

r37 Precisely

by Anonymousreply 43February 28, 2020 3:15 PM

r42 But he wasn't just objecting to it being played in a gay bar but said it was a song that was offensive in a wider context and bigoted.Does he have a point there?

by Anonymousreply 44February 28, 2020 3:17 PM

I get so upset when that song is played at the bar, because it hinders my chances to pick up that hot guy I've been cruising. That's the only reason I'm single.

“There are still many corners of the internet where authoritarian and right-nationalism reign supreme, and where people with those views organize. Still, if deplatforming is beginning to have an effect — and if Facebook and Twitter are suddenly more wary of the potential for their platforms to be used to manipulate — the logic would suggest that as more authoritarians and fascists are deplatformed, the global tide towards authoritarianism might slow down, or even cease.

There is not any evidence that this is happening, nor that there is much of an effect on more significant movements. Hungary continues its slide rightward; Turkey has devolved into an authoritarian state, and Brazil’s newest president Jair Bolsonaro is about as right as they come in democracies.”

How interesting that “cancel culture” took full flight after Trump became POTUS, and let’s not forget, that Hillary Clinton, as well as others, were victims of “cancel culture”, before real criminals and rapists became cancelled.

Also, not everyone is “canceled” equally. Ask Bill Barr, he’ll tell ya!

r45 😁😁😅 Brilliant post!

by Anonymousreply 47February 28, 2020 8:18 PM

r46 Authoritarianism in all its forms and whether from the left or right is very concerning.

by Anonymousreply 48February 29, 2020 12:31 AM

"I really hope this kind of strange thinking is not commonplace amongst the younger generation."

This never happened, and you're just stirring shit to attack "the younger generation"

by Anonymousreply 49March 2, 2020 4:20 PM

[quote]shitty hero love songs.

Say goodbye to Streisand, Madonna, GagGag, Britney, etc etc ect. Hetero love songs is 99% of the crap gays listen to. Hmm. On second thought, please do rid us of this curse!

by Anonymousreply 50March 2, 2020 4:28 PM

I agree that it would be a dull world if everyone had to stay in their lane. That would be the death of art and culture.

by Anonymousreply 51March 2, 2020 4:34 PM

The people who bitch about "cancel culture" and "the death of art and culture" are the ones who hounded Colin Kaepernick and The Dixie Chicks and don't give a shit about art or culture.

by Anonymousreply 52March 2, 2020 4:36 PM

It's a great song which I happen to own on a vintage 45, but it would have no place in the limited100 slots of a vinyl jukebox in my home. Same for any gay public space, where celebration of heteronormative culture isn't why we're there.

Maybe the bar's owners think it'll evoke feelings of self loathing, leading to increased alcohol consumption.

by Anonymousreply 53March 2, 2020 4:40 PM

When Jody Warley released "When a Man Loves a Woman" she did a remix. "When a Man Loves a Man"

When was the last time you saw a jukebox? They are now (mostly) streaming machines with gigantic catalogs.

by Anonymousreply 56March 2, 2020 6:05 PM

Gay bars still exist? I thought they just became "bars" as to not exclude any wymyn.

by Anonymousreply 57March 2, 2020 6:07 PM

Yes they do r57 just about!

by Anonymousreply 58March 2, 2020 6:15 PM

I sell 45s out of my collection to vintage jukebox owners, R56. Contemporary jukebox models, streaming or local storage, have an inventory on offer that's often highly customized to the location. What would YOU select for your gay clients?

by Anonymousreply 59March 2, 2020 11:00 PM

You’ll also have to get rid of show tunes sing-along night since most of the songs are about heterosexual relationships.

by Anonymousreply 60March 2, 2020 11:13 PM

This "SurvivingAngel" character posts a lot of anti-gay stuff.

Very homophobic.

by Anonymousreply 61March 2, 2020 11:16 PM

[R59] I have a big collection of 45’s, too. My friend had a hipster bar and used to change the records in the jukebox every month or so. She had mostly 60’s soul and pop.

by Anonymousreply 62March 2, 2020 11:53 PM

by Anonymousreply 70March 3, 2020 1:48 AM

Lame first world problem, you can hear that song in any one of a thousand other straight bars in that country. To bitch that it's some how cancel culture or whatever because it's a stupid song to be playing in a gay bar is completely backwards in regards to diversity.

YOU ARE IN A GAY BAR, that's IS what is different, why must it be exactly like all the straight bars?

by Anonymousreply 71March 3, 2020 4:48 AM

I would love to go to a gay bar that played classic 1960s soul every night.
