My appointment with the doctor is in 4 hours. I’m so sick I can’t stand up. The prep solution made me throw up and I’m dizzy. The not eating is too much. Will it be ruined if I eat some toast and sip a coke? I feel terrible I’ll miss the test because I’m too nauseous. Mary!

Yes, it will be ruined and you'll have to go through this all over again!
by Anonymous | reply 5 | February 26, 2020 12:52 PM |
So, you're a top then?
by Anonymous | reply 6 | February 26, 2020 12:53 PM |
You'll get through it OP. Hang in there, but don't fuck yourself up by eating toast. When I had mine, the nurse gave me an actual gold star for how well I had cleaned out.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | February 26, 2020 12:54 PM |
Stay the course, OP. Otherwise you’ll have to do it all over again. If you’re feeling woozy, you probably need some sodium. Pickle juice or chicken broth are good.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | February 26, 2020 12:57 PM |
And make sure someone goes with you. And perhaps an adult diaper. No kidding. I accompanied my poor husband and the whole way home he was afraid he was going to shit his pants in the taxi. He’s bigger than me, so if he had passed out, I’d have been useless, but at least he’d have someone to take care of him.

It would take hours for food to reach your asshole. Have some cereal or something.

For next time: There are protein drinks that are clear enough to offer nutrition and won't adversely affect intestinal visualization. Isopure is one brand. There are others.

I loved my colonoscopy. The anesthesia they use makes you feel like you had a good night sleep.
It's the same stuff Michael Jackson's doctor gave him and what killed it because he overdosed.
I totally understand why MJ wanted it
by Anonymous | reply 12 | February 26, 2020 1:13 PM |
Terrible advice R10: It won't take hours for stomach contents to begin to appear at a section which will be viewed during the colonoscopy.

Good luck.
I hated the prep solution and cleaning myself out, but afterwards I felt refreshed. I think I lost five pounds the week of my procedure.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | February 26, 2020 1:21 PM |
A nurse friend of mine inserted an NG tube to deliver the prep solution to his stomach. If I have a colonoscopy again, I'm going to request the same thing. I have great difficulty with the taste of the prep solution no matter how much flavoring I add or how cold I make it.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | February 26, 2020 1:27 PM |
WTF? Preping for a colonoscopy is so easy these days. Drink a solution, and shit. In the old days it was a ten hour ordeal the day before, plus more the morning of. Grow up. Next time, go to the urologist and have them put a camera up your urethra while you are lucid. THAT is a nightmare.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | February 26, 2020 1:28 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 17 | February 26, 2020 1:44 PM |
Thanks for all of the help. I had two pieces of gluten free toast and a small cup of coffee with milk. The solution was too much this time. The lack of even a cracker was too much. I can’t be in a Lyft throwing up bile. I read on WebMD that there is the thought now that low fiber food is ok and some just cannot get through it otherwise. It’s the dizzy spins I can’t get through. This will be my third colonoscopy in 4 years. I was coming back just to check that all’s clear.

If you’re having anesthesia or sedation, do NOT eat solid food. There is a risk of it coming up and aspirating into your lungs...which will land you in an ICU.

I had my first last year and that was the protocol.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | February 26, 2020 1:57 PM |
I was going to say what R21 said, your stomach needs to be empty to prevent aspiration into your lungs. At least tell them that you’ve had some food, there are different preps they can give you, if they have to cancel today.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | February 26, 2020 2:11 PM |
I called the nurse and left a message to call me. I will go in if they still want me to. I had to eat that toast or I wouldn’t even be able to stand up. I’m dizzy but not as much. I’m dehydrated but zero thirst. If I drink I’ll retch. 1 1/2 hrs until my appointment. I’ll see... so frustrating to get 90% through it.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | February 26, 2020 2:29 PM |
You are an incredible mess. I seriously doubt you read and understood the prep instructions. Millions of people do this everyday with no drama. Are you diabetic? You much more than a colonoscopy if you can’t go two days on a clear liquid diet.

by Anonymous | reply 30 | February 26, 2020 2:41 PM |
You're an idiot,OP. Of course toast and coke ruin the prep. You need your colon clean to the probe can get through, and anything dark can look like blood in the intestines (and contribute to a false positive for polyps or cancer.) Good grief. Did you read any of the literature you provided?
by Anonymous | reply 31 | February 26, 2020 2:49 PM |
Miralax and GatorAde instead of the prep stuff worked for me. A couple of days before my scheduled procedure, the doctor hadn't sent the prescription for the stuff to the drugstore.....so I went by the place and was given these instructions......
Half a small bottle of the Miralax in a 16 oz bottle of Gatorade - do this twice.....
And yes I loved the Propofol.....no wonder MJ was hooked on it.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | February 26, 2020 3:13 PM |
Stay the course, you must do exactly what you have been instructed to do or you will have to go through it all over again. It's worth it because you do not just get screened but any polyps (which can become cancers) are removed. So it both screens and prevents. It is well worth the prep. Everyone does it- buck up!

by Anonymous | reply 46 | February 26, 2020 5:26 PM |
Valid issue OP. I’ve done them 6 times and never had a major issue - though it was rough.
The last time I was getting extremely dizzy and had major GI pain the whole night before. I barely made it to the office in the AM. I got to the front desk and she was asking me to fill out papers - I got blurry and could barely hear her. Woke up a minute or two later - passed out on the floor, shit and peed myself (despite going to bathroom less than half a hour before) with nurses car bling around me and everyone in waiting room staring at me. Mortifying - and scary,
So all the bitchy queens here can shut up. People react differently - even at different times - and there may be specific issues that cause it. My doctor said it could be salt. But I honestly think it was something more. Terrifying and humiliating. But I made damn sure they went ahead and did it - even though they wanted me to reschedule. I am not going through that again soon.

You are a HUGE pussy, OP. Also, if you knew you needed anti-nausea meds, then why, when you picked up the bowel prep solution from the pharmacy, didn't you realize it wasn't there, call the doctor's office and have them call it in for you right then and there. Sounds like you're changing your story because this thread didn't go the way you thought it would.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | February 26, 2020 5:33 PM |
the prep is overkill. I did everything up to the taking of the Dulcolax at the end of the prep as I knew I was emptied out and the dulcolax would have set me up for a severe bout of tenesmus(look it up)
by Anonymous | reply 49 | February 26, 2020 5:42 PM |
My doc charges a fee if you cancel with less than 24 hours notice. They also charge a fee plus the cost of anesthesia if they start the procedure but can't finish because you're not clean as a whistle inside.

My procedure was at 7 in the morning. I could eat a light breakfast (scrambled eggs) in the morning, and toast up until 1 PM. Then , absolutely nothing but Jello. Starting at 6 PM, it was nothing but the prep and endless water. I hate water!. I grabbed some crossword puzzles and sat on the toilet for the rest of the night. It was awful, but not undoable. The day of the procedure was absolutely fine. It's amazing how you feel nothing "down there" when it's all over. But definitely have someone give you a ride home.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | February 27, 2020 1:12 AM |
OP you might want to also ask for a different prep. I had a colonoscopy a few months ago. They gave me that whole gallon prep thing, which was terrible, and I didn’t even feel completely cleaned out. Turns out they had to cancel that procedure as I was in a lot of pain, and only twilighted, don’t remember that at all.
The second time they had me take 1/2 gallon of Miralax, which was easier, and they used propyphol, so no danger of being uncomfortable and somewhat awake.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | February 27, 2020 3:17 AM |
I've had several of these procedures. They're awful. But you have to follow the instructions they give you. If something unusual is happening, it's reasonable to cancel and figure out strategies for the next appointment. But if you're questioning if you can eat something the day of the procedure because you're hungry, then it's obvious you haven't read the rules closely enough, especially if you are coming to DL instead of double checking the procedure list. It seems as if you're asking the wrong people for permission to sabotage your colonoscopy prep. It's not always about food moving through your digestive system during the procedure. Once, on my way to a procedure after following all the instructions, I was dizzy and dehydrated. I took two small, and I mean small, sips of water an hour before my appointment. I was questioned about consuming anything that morning. I mentioned the water and a whole team of doctors appeared. They almost cancelled! I had to swear on my mother's grave that it was only a couple of sips. They still postponed the procedure for three hours. The concern is that anytime they put you under, there's a chance you could aspirate if there's anything in your stomach. You could choke to death or get fluid in your lungs and drown. They aren't playing around. Follow the instructions to the letter.

I had mine yesterday, Op. They gave me Suprep Prep kit. The first bottle went down OK but I was nauseous drinking the second bottle and I didn't like the results of the colonoscopy. They found six polyps and I have diverticulosis.

Holy shit you are right, I had about no exaggeration five minutes notice and BAM. The nurse said, do you want to watch the monitor and I was no thanks, I'm good, as the doctor is ramming the camera into my dick. All because I had a false high PSA test.
I have a friend who passed out twice form teh prep but it was probably because of dehydration. It does suck all the water out of you.

[quote]OP try scheduling your next colonoscopy for first thing in the morning to minimize the fasting.
This is what I did, too. I made sure to schedule the appointment for as early as possible so that I knew, once I got through the night, I would get up first thing in the morning, get ready, go get it done, and then I'd be free to go eat. If you schedule it for the afternoon, that means you'd get up and still know you'd have to go another half day without eating. No thanks.
I've had two of them and the first time was harder than the second time. The worst part both times was no doubt drinking half a jug of that awful solution that kicks your bowels in motion. It smelled and tasted just like Lemon Pledge. It's truly the most godawful stuff I've ever drank in my life. (Strangely, when I mentioned how much I hated the taste to my doctor, he seemed to actually be offended by the comment, which I didn't understand but also didn't give a shit whether he liked it or not. Just because I had to drink it didn't mean I had to like it.) My way of getting through the day without eating is just to try not to think about it -- when you're not sitting on the toilet (which is most of the time), watch TV, do crossword puzzles, write, just do whatever to keep it off your mind and the next thing you know, the day is just about over and it's almost time for bed. (But again, make sure you make your appointment for first thing the next morning. Doing so does a lot for your state of mind.)
As for the test itself, that's pretty much a breeze. Both times I went in, they knocked me the fuck out, and then the next thing I knew I was waking up and the doctor was telling me it was over and all was fine. It was quick, too, like I had only been out a couple of minutes (as opposed to however long it actually took). What I appreciated, too, the first time was that they let me take my own self home -- I'd told them ahead of time that I had no one to bring with me (because I didn't) and that if they'd just let me lay there for a few minutes after the test, just long enough to get myself together, that I'd be able to leave on my own. So they did -- after the test they left me in the room alone for a few minutes to just lay there, then, after a few minutes, I got up, got dressed and went home and was just fine. Fast-forward five years to the second test and they said I was required by law now to be escorted home, so I was forced to pay an expensive fee for a service I didn't want or need and this much older woman (she was easily in her 60s) was assigned to accompany me home after the test. I told her very nicely that I was fine and didn't need her but she said she had to go with me, so I said fine, but she couldn't keep up with me and I had to constantly stop and wait for her to catch up with me (she was overweight and moved at a snail's pace). She was nice and I didn't mean to be rude by moving so quickly but I'm a fast walker and I did not need her, she was forced on me, so I guess I was acting out my frustrations a bit. Anyway, she stayed with me all the way to my apartment and then I thanked her and sent her on her way.
So my third test is coming up this year (in June, right in time for my 55th birthday). Not looking forward to it but also not dreading it either. Just something else that must be done in life. I hope not only for myself but for anyone here who has one coming up that everything comes out okay.

Late for OP but for anyone else anticipating a colonoscopy or other procedure, but some glucose tablets. Taking two as early as you can before the actual procedure should be no problem as they quickly and easily dissolve, don't remain in your stomach or intestines and raise your blood glucose but no enough to cause alarm if you have a blood draw.

My colonoscopy was yesterday at lunchtime, and I was freaking out around 6 a.m. because the prep (Miralax + Dulcolax) still hadn't cleaned me out all the way. I reached a nurse at the clinic who told me to get to a drugstore ASAP and buy a bottle of magnesium citrate, which did the trick. "Next time, go to the urologist and have them put a camera up your urethra while you are lucid. THAT is a nightmare."
I've had two flexible cystoscopy procedures and they weren't bad at all. I went into the urologist's office and the nurse took me into a room with a couch. She told me to strip off everything below the waist and put this paper sheet over me. The doctor came in, removed the sheet, grabbed my dick and injected lidocaine up the urethra . Then, he stuck this tube up and proceeded to look everywhere, until he entered the bladder. He told me the bladder looked very good and started gently removing the tube. At one point, he said," You might feel something as we go by the prostate." I did; it felt great. If I hadn't had a tube up my dick, I might have gotten hard with this handsome doctor holding my goods and prostate stimulation. Anyway, the tube came out and it was over. Took about ten minutes total. I put on my pants and drove home. There was no prep and no recuperation time. The only downside was that when I peed the first time, it hurt, but that disappeared in a matter of hours. So, for me, it really wasn't a big problem.

by Anonymous | reply 84 | March 28, 2020 3:30 PM |
It was to anesthetize the tip so the tube could go it. Procedure:
For a flexible cystoscopy:
you lie down flat on a special couch
your genitals are cleaned with an antiseptic and a sheet is placed over the surrounding area local anaesthetic gel is applied to your urethra to numb it and help the cystoscope move along it more easily
the cystoscope is inserted into your urethra and gently moved down towards your bladder water may be pumped into your bladder so your doctor or nurse can see inside it more clearly – you may be able to see images sent to a monitor by a camera in the cystoscope

I did the prep with 4 liters of Cholyte about a month ago. It wasn't the worst. I got to continue eating the low residue diet up til the midnight before my exam. I started drinking the mixture earlier than prescribed, though, which was a good thing. Took first dose at 5 pm, which kept me going til about midnight. Took second round starting at 2 am. Had to be at the hospital for 8:30, and stopped shitting about an hour before that. My advice to anyone is if you have an early morning appointment, start your prep earlier. The nurse told me it's okay if you're not completely finished eliminating - they'll just vacuum it out of you while you're getting scoped.
