This is you, Grammar Nazi’s of DL
People who constantly point out Grammatical Mistakes are Jerks, Study Suggests
Nazi’s
by Anonymous | reply 1 | February 24, 2020 6:51 PM |
It's violence against those who know their grammar.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | February 24, 2020 6:53 PM |
OP needs the refresher course, "Initial Caps in Headlines."
by Anonymous | reply 3 | February 24, 2020 6:55 PM |
Literal violence, R2.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | February 24, 2020 6:57 PM |
Thanks. We did need a study on this. Those grammar Nazis are a bit much. Now I can refer them to the study and point out they are much more likely to be real Nazis, and follow the lab coat confederate's advice to deliver the deadly electric wattage that will kill a person, with no questions asked.
All because they like rules. They like rules more than people! That's why they ignore the heart of a matter to focus on a tangential violation of the rule! The forest is missed through the trees! The box cannot be thought out of! Regional dialects cannot be taken into account!
No, it's follow the orders. Follow, follow, follow. Push the violater into the oven.
Famous Quote by someone dead: I don't give a damn for a man who can only spell a word one way!
by Anonymous | reply 5 | February 24, 2020 7:01 PM |
Usually they're fatties, too.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | February 24, 2020 7:06 PM |
It's aggressive education... no one wants knowledge shoved down their throat no matter how accurate it is.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | February 24, 2020 7:10 PM |
I've actually called out people who do this...the issue I have is that I don't want people to be afraid to post as their grammar/spelling may not be great.
We want an inclusive environment and everyone should feel free to post and not be intimidated that someone is going to critique what they wrote.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | February 24, 2020 7:13 PM |
Agreed. Also, the internet's global. There are plenty of people using it, and not everyone speaks your language as fluently as you do. When you correct some Columbian whose second language's English, you're the one who looks dumb, not them.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | February 24, 2020 7:16 PM |
no one wants knowledge shoved down their throat no matter how accurate it is.
Why don’t they? It would benefit them if they had additional knowledge. Isn’t this akin to voting Republican even if it’s contrary to their own interests?
by Anonymous | reply 10 | February 24, 2020 7:20 PM |
What really gets on my nerves, is when they completely dismiss an argument because of a grammatical mistake but don't engage the actual argument.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | February 24, 2020 7:21 PM |
OP, do you include punctuationists and their assistants in the category of grammar Nazis?
by Anonymous | reply 12 | February 24, 2020 7:21 PM |
So my English teacher was a jerk?
by Anonymous | reply 13 | February 24, 2020 7:22 PM |
R11 they derail threads constantly. It truly upsets me.

If he were R15, he’d know it’s spelled "Colombian".
by Anonymous | reply 17 | February 24, 2020 7:30 PM |
R13, it's completely different and you should know that.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | February 24, 2020 7:40 PM |
I'm dyslexic. Maybe I'm over sensitive to it, but I really can't stand the "Oh Dear" bitch.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | February 24, 2020 7:42 PM |
People who constantly point out grammatical mistakes are doing a great public service.
Fixed.
And who does it "constantly"? I only bother with one out of ten that could use a little polish.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | February 24, 2020 7:49 PM |
People who can’t spell, punctuate, or compose sentences correctly usually have attitude problems that they project on those who are simply trying to stop them from looking like uneducated fools.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | February 24, 2020 8:04 PM |
R19, I agree. I think she has now changed to Oh my...but they are both the same. An all better attitude and joy in pointing out someone's error.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | February 24, 2020 8:09 PM |
I am an unabashed grammar Nazi, but I would never waste my grammar skills in a place like this.
It is much better to save them for my review of writing samples submitted by employment applicants.
So long as Muriel does not provide an Edit function, one must give others the benefit of the doubt. Were that possible, I know in my heart that most of you losers would identify and correct those little errors. Right?
by Anonymous | reply 23 | February 24, 2020 8:15 PM |
Heil Strunk and White! Send 6 million dangling participles to the gas chamber!

That sentence gives me a headache, but I've seen worse on here
by Anonymous | reply 25 | February 24, 2020 8:27 PM |
I've always thought it was quiet rude to point out someones grammar errors. I mean, give me a brake, just don't due it.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | February 24, 2020 8:33 PM |
Now R9 thinks you look dumb, R17.

Some people are so insecure they use any excuse to feel better about themselves.

by Anonymous | reply 33 | February 24, 2020 9:00 PM |
We may be jerks but you're still stupid.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | February 24, 2020 9:13 PM |
Poor grammar and spelling do compromise the validity of talking points sometimes. However, I've had some of my posts destroyed by autocorrect several times. I also sometimes post after a few cocktails where a coherent thought gets lost. I cut queens a break here and there but when they can't master basic shit like there/their/they're I get annoyed.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | February 24, 2020 9:41 PM |
Imagine that. Being a know-it-all is annoying!
by Anonymous | reply 36 | February 24, 2020 9:48 PM |
@ r35, Cocktails and keyboards don't mix :(
by Anonymous | reply 37 | February 24, 2020 9:54 PM |
I rarely point out grammar mistakes to people, unless they are really intelligent and can actually benefit from the suggestion. Most people are dummies/dolts. Who gives a fuck how they speak. One common joint possessives mistake is: Her and I's - when it should be: Hers and my.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | February 24, 2020 9:55 PM |
Boozing and posting...that's a whole other thread I guess.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | February 24, 2020 9:58 PM |
R38 okay, but it's all in how you say it. The "oh dear" is meant to be bitchy and above the person. I think if there is a sincere attempt to help someone, that's great. However, all in the approach.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | February 24, 2020 10:02 PM |
I wish I had a grammar Nazi boy friend, or even good friend.
I enjoy leaning from people who know more than me.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | February 24, 2020 10:07 PM |
I disagree, r40, at least with regards to the “oh dear” intent: I think it’s supposed to be humorous, as some school teacher from the 1940s just tsk-tsking.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | February 24, 2020 10:07 PM |
R7 = Donald Trump.
And is everything that's wrong with the world.

It isn't to "who" I give my heart; its to "WHOM" I give my heart, which I can prove to you with this very simple chart.
That's a fine way to lo-o-oose a man!
by Anonymous | reply 44 | February 24, 2020 10:08 PM |
It's just a DL tradition. I'd never do it in real life.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | February 24, 2020 10:10 PM |
The "Oh dear" thing is charming.
And I've thanked people here for pointing out grammar mistakes I've made.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | February 24, 2020 10:10 PM |
I think most of the grammar mistakes are simply due to the lack of an 'edit' function on this site. Also that fucking autocorrect takes over sometimes. I hate if one of the grammar Nazis derails a good discussion with some petty correction. Screw them.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | February 24, 2020 10:15 PM |
R38 and R41, I didn't take it that way. I thought it was bitchy, all knowing and could be perceived as intimidating for others who post. Everyone has their own perception...
by Anonymous | reply 48 | February 24, 2020 10:16 PM |
Obtuse people can be obstinate, obese and odious, alas.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | February 24, 2020 10:19 PM |

Then they shouldn't be posting here.

As I've mentioned before on other threads, many grammatical errors are the result of imperfect dictation programs. Dictation programs are ten times better than they were a few years ago, so much so they actually work. I'm not going to sit and type letter by letter on a phone when i can just click the mic and speak. But on iPhone, there is a weird bug where the dictation software will write the correct thing and then alter it seconds later. So you watch as it gets it correct and then before you send, it re-thinks what you said and makes changes as you're going to press the post button. Results in lots of errors.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | February 24, 2020 10:30 PM |
R51 Then that means the ancient gay white queens on this site should be able to take what's thrown at them as well.

Having a foreign speaking house cleaner is a good thing for those with compulsive speech pedantry (I should know). Finally, someone who actually appreciates your excellent English, and maybe not just because they have to put up with you. Here's someone who says he when they mean she (or vice versa) or always uses the present tense. They actually need you. Whereas, people who are native speakers and use English poorly (like Bloomberg, who is given to saying "anyways." one of my pet peeves), they're hopeless. (It does annoy the hell out of me that Bloomberg says "anyways." And to think I considered voting for him until that terrible debate performance...)

R51, something mean spirited is different.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | February 24, 2020 10:54 PM |
As a teacher, editor, and writer, I am paid to be a stickler for grammar.
I have never corrected anyone’s grammar, usage, syntax, punctuation, etc., on DL or any Internet forum. It derails a conversation. Also, most of the time, the error is a typo. We all have our grammar pet peeves but I keep mine to myself unless someone asks, and then I could talk about grammar all day long. (Yes, I am boring. I’ll save you the trouble and say I’m also a fat whore. But I’m not a grammar nazi unless I’m being paid.)

I try not to do it in my real life, but I work at a library and it has fallen on me to proofread everything that goes out. Young people can't or won't put the work in. I can't imagine their professors just gliding over a lot of the mistakes I see. I'm OK with doing it, but it irks me that I'm the "obsessive one" or the "grammar nerd." It's the sloppiness mingled with disrespect that is maddening.

You're a loser, R86, and you only have bad sex, too.
Grammar Nazis pay attention to the details and have the discipline to get things right. That pays off massively for them and their lucky partners when they are having sex.
But there you are, surrounded by your inattentive "fun people." And sadly, all of you have to get by with bad generalized unskilled sloppy sex.

This. The whole “I’m not writing a thesis here! What’s the difference?” attitude pervasive today is what gets me. If you expect to be taken seriously and for your opinions to matter you should write seriously.
Some people see grammatical errors and completely disregard the rest of that person’s post or argument, dismissing the person as ‘unable to write a coherent argument so why should I take it seriously and counter?’
by Anonymous | reply 94 | February 25, 2020 1:46 PM |
To be fair, some autocorrect errors are quite obvious. If someone posts about a song and says the artist had “lots of hots back in the day,” that’s a fairly obvious autocorrect.
However, when someone writes “we went to there house last night,” and then blames autocorrect, I mean, c’mon.
by Anonymous | reply 95 | February 25, 2020 1:52 PM |
Almost 100 posts and the stupid people who do not know how to compose a sentence properly have given no valid argument other than name calling and a "stop picking on the stupid!" whine of pity.

There is a definite sense that the folks who argue that grammar doesn't matter are the same folks who snidely speak of "the elites" and other coded language for people who are smart and well-educated.
Even before cheeto and the last election cycle there seemed to be a concerted effort to downplay the importance of learning, a lot of it to dismiss science and the evidence for things like climate change, vaccines, and other policy positions based on rigorous analysis and complex ideas.
Clear and effective communication matters.

by Anonymous | reply 103 | February 25, 2020 8:38 PM |
I always took oh dear in jest. I don’t get the people who get all up in arms and start cursing at the person who pointed it out.
If the person was trying to call you dumb or insult you it wouldn’t read oh dear, but “Hey dickhead! Learn how to spell because you’re stupid,” or something similar.
by Anonymous | reply 104 | February 25, 2020 8:41 PM |
R101 It does matter but not to the extreme of shoving someone into a gas shower if they make mistakes and don't type or speak the way you want them to.
That's what puts the Nazi in grammar Nazis. You don't show that you care about the person you're correcting so what is the point in listening to you? Just for your appeasement? After the rudeness you gave with an unasked for correction? I think it makes people double down because it's just not a nice way if changing someone.

I remember reading an article about spelling errors or typos. The more intelligent you were the more you didn't see the mistake and saw the actual correct spelling For example, thme, you saw them. Or you could decipher the word regardless of the spelling error.

by Anonymous | reply 109 | February 26, 2020 5:13 AM |
You may be right, r108, I genuinely don’t know. But I never took it that way.
As I said upthread, I always took it as an old schoolmarm type woman who was clutching her pearls and saying it under her breath. I pictured like a teacher sighing to herself.
by Anonymous | reply 110 | February 26, 2020 11:36 AM |
The DL is not now, nor ever will be, a safe, supportive space for you to share things that trigger you. Why? Because unlike your helicopter parents who gave you full autonomy to reject their decisions at all times, and unlike your school which gave you awards just for showing up at a sporting event because of your oh so special snowflakiness, we at DL are in no way required to put up with your lifelong habit of whiny entitlement.
Consider it a service that we at Datalounge clue you into a simple truth that your parents chose not to tell you and which your teachers were legally bound not to tell you: [bold]you are not special.[/bold] That’s it. Neither am I. Neither is anyone else. There are rules that apply to all of us in life. Nobody in life—judges, coworkers, police officers—give a shit about your widdle feelings, or your excuses, or your bitching. Stomping your feet in court and throwing the citation on the floor will not make this reality go away. Period. Likewise, insisting that people who speak a particular language are in no way bound to indulge your petty grievances. You are either expressing yourself correctly in a language or you are not. That’s it.
Long ago in a galaxy far, far away, people knew this. In those times, when it was pointed out that you were wrong, you were first supposed to feel embarrassed, and then next drop it completely (hopefully with a personal resolve to never repeat that mistake again). There was no outcome-based education, nor participation trophies, nor supportive spaces where you can air your feelings and then feel comfortable with your world once more without any need to: (a) acknowledge you’re fault, and (b) accept culpability. In those halcyon days, facts and opinions were not synonymous concepts. Facts were binary things, either a fact was proven to be true or it was false. That’s it. Another way of thinking about this is that facts are digital (either true or false), while opinions are analog, being black or white or endless shades in between. By definition, you are under no obligation to defend your opinion, while facts are scrupulously defended as true and/or are proven as false. Perhaps your teachers never introduced you to this thing called the Scientific Method. Look it up. While doing that, also look up “critical thinking.”
I will preemptively “oh, dear” myself for the numerous grammatical errors I created in this reply. For example, my second sentence was a huge run-on sentence, and I think I’ve used parentheses and em-dashes incorrectly (or inconsistently). My excuse is that my emotions got the best of me as I wanted to reach through the Internet and shake you like an au pair’s baby. Regardless, when the mistakes are pointed out, I will own them and not try to convince you that I’m special and my widdle feelings got hurt.
Tl;dr: Shut the fuck up, grow the fuck up, or just go the fuck away.
