“Saturday's launch was reportedly filmed as part of Homemade Astronauts, a new TV series about amateur rocket makers to be aired on the US Science Channel. The project had to be carried out on a tight budget.”
I’m assuming each new episode ends in about the same way.

How do you design a rocket that’s supposed to prove the earth is flat, when the physics needed to build such a rocket assumes a more-or-less spherical earth?
by Anonymous | reply 8 | February 23, 2020 3:57 PM |
Clearly he did not have the physics needed.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | February 23, 2020 3:58 PM |
Clearly, his beliefs had quite an impact.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | February 23, 2020 4:01 PM |
Well??? Is the earth flat? I’m gonna guess the area of impact is now more of a crater.

Let's congratulate our latest Darwin Award winner. Posthumously.

"Mad Mike Hughes just launched himself in a self-made steam-powered rocket and crash landed. Very likely did not survive."
by Anonymous | reply 13 | February 23, 2020 5:44 PM |
If he weren't past likely child-procreation age, I'd say this was pure Darwinism at work. (Although he was "only" 64, which is the same as 44 on DL).
by Anonymous | reply 14 | February 23, 2020 5:49 PM |
Darwin award nominee! Actually, he should get a lifetime achievement award.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | February 23, 2020 5:51 PM |
Fortunately you mean.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | February 23, 2020 6:03 PM |
And all this science I don't understand
It's just my job five days a week
A rocket man, a rocket man
by Anonymous | reply 17 | February 23, 2020 6:03 PM |
Sad. I want dumb science-denying people to learn their lesson, but not quite like this.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | February 23, 2020 6:10 PM |
He certainly didn't stick the landing.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | February 23, 2020 6:15 PM |
One less science denier.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | February 23, 2020 6:18 PM |
I don’t understand. He strapped himself to/into a rocket. Suppose the earth WERE flat. How exactly did he plan to survive?
by Anonymous | reply 22 | February 23, 2020 7:32 PM |
Looks old enough to have bred already - too bad.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | February 23, 2020 7:32 PM |
Speaking of FLAT!
by Anonymous | reply 24 | February 23, 2020 7:34 PM |
What a stupid moron to not even put an ejection device in the rocket, or a parachute to allow the thing to come back down safely.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | February 23, 2020 8:55 PM |
[quote]r11 Well??? Is the earth flat?
I believe there's proof his head/face are now flat.

But what was on his iPod?
by Anonymous | reply 27 | February 23, 2020 9:08 PM |
r4 is the Cliché Bot. Why does this thing post here (or anywhere)? What would data scientists possibly learn from deploying bots that just regurgitate bumper sticker phrases and clichés?
by Anonymous | reply 28 | February 23, 2020 9:08 PM |
r20, the word 'less' is only used to modify plural nouns. Few/fewer/fewest is used to modify singular nouns. If you're going to attempt to communicate in English, try to get a handle on some of the basics.

The people who helped him in this fool endeavor are just as dumb as him. They should all be arrested.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | February 23, 2020 9:38 PM |
He was trying to reach an altitude of 5000 ft.
A hot air balloonist surpassed that altitude back in 1783 and now they've gone much, much higher. Airplanes cruise at 35,000 ft. Was buying a plane ticket too simple?
by Anonymous | reply 34 | February 23, 2020 10:05 PM |
He could have taken a plane from Barstow to Bakersfield and gotten a better view.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | February 23, 2020 10:08 PM |
R34, you're assuming basic functional logic about how things work that clearly was not present.
I do agree that the film crew that egged him on should be charged with something like depraved indifference, even if the end result was a slight improvement to humanity's gene pool.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | February 24, 2020 12:15 AM |
I'm still unclear about how he expected to land after takeoff. Other than in a flaming wreck, I mean.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | February 24, 2020 12:40 AM |
The Flat Earth Society has members around the world. He was one of them.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | February 24, 2020 12:52 AM |
Barstow? Must've been bats that took him down.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | February 24, 2020 1:16 AM |
Too bad he didn't take more science-deniers with him.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | February 24, 2020 1:36 AM |
During the take off the parachute decided to remain behind. Oops!
by Anonymous | reply 42 | February 24, 2020 4:13 AM |
I saw someone speculate on Twitter that he was just using the flat-earthers to raise money for his hobbies, and it kind of makes sense. It seems like he was a serious daredevil long before he started talking about that stuff. He had a gofundme for one of his rocket projects and didn't earn nearly enough, but later when he declared it was intended to prove the flat earth theory, all the crazies started donating and he raised more than his goal.

I stumbled onto this jaw dropping live broadcast. It completely embodies the stupidity and disconnect from reality, of the victim and his followers, just amazing.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | February 24, 2020 4:41 PM |
I bet he's REALLY mad now.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | February 24, 2020 4:57 PM |
Love this comment from the video @ R44: "He died the way he lived, flat."
by Anonymous | reply 46 | February 24, 2020 6:57 PM |
[quote]Well??? Is the earth flat?
Only the part he crashed into.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | February 24, 2020 7:03 PM |
I noticed a few of the comments on the live broadcast called out a creepy lack of compassion/emotion after the crash. If you dug into the psychology of people attracted to something like this, you'd discover that for them, death wasn't just a possible outcome. It's why they came. That also applies to the sponsor of the debacle, Science Channel.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | February 24, 2020 10:24 PM |
A “steam-powered rocket?” What, was the Amish coal-based missile unavailable?
by Anonymous | reply 49 | February 24, 2020 10:41 PM |
[quote]'Mad' Mike Hughes dies after crash-landing homemade rocket
Not too long after, I'm guessing.

Isn't the "crazy" in the thread title redundant?
by Anonymous | reply 51 | February 25, 2020 12:01 AM |
are we sure there was actually someone in there? could be a hoax or he needed to fake his own death ;)
