Anyone in the Midstates/Great Lakes area watching Svengoolie? Is he the last of the midnight movie hosts we grew up with?
Let's face it. He's still amusing - the nostalgia is so deep - but he never was funny/funny. I think he might have been the inspiration for Mystery Science Theatre. He always has great bits of Hollywood gossip. I love the guy and he has to be 100 years old by now. Still makes $$ off of Chicago conventions, selling t-shirts and rubber chickens. God bless him!
I really miss monster movie hosts...OMG! Who was that chick - Mistress of the Dark?

I believe he's the 3rd incarnation of Svengoolie. Delightful memories of #2, Son of Svengoolie in the 70's. I remember badgering my mother and my stepfather to go to a midnight screening of Warhol's, "Frankenstein" that he was hosting, not knowing a thing about it (I was 9). They let me go by myself-which would be completely nuts in this day and age, given it's rating, the content, the crowd, and the fact that I was a 9 year old kid by myself.

A few years ago I went to a Party City a couple of weeks before Halloween. It was packed and I had no idea why until I saw Svengoolie sitting at a table signing autographs. People were actually lined up through multiple aisles waiting to meet him. I just don't get it. Nice gig if you can get it, though!

You don't have to be in the Midwest or Great Lakes area, he airs nationally on Me-TV.

You're thinking of Elvira, real name Cassandra Peterson, who hosted horror films on local LA television starting in the 1980s. The character was very much of a copy of Vampira, who hosted horror films in the 1950s and had a role Plan 9 from Outer Space.

R3 YES! Berwyn!! I lived in Wisconsin and learned all the Chicago suburbs from Svengoolie. I met my husband in NYC and he was so impressed that I knew his hometown (Kankakee). Less impressed that I knew it from Svengoolie but that wasn't a deal breaker.

Yeah - he's still on Me-TV. He actually used to be a little hottie back in the 70's.
Elvira used to turn up on a lot of commercials and events every Halloween, but she must have retired.

R1, There's only been 2. Rich Koz was the Son of the Svengoolie in the 70s and the original Svengoolie (Jerry G. Bishop) , " In 1995, Koz was set to bring the show back and Bishop told him he was "all grown up" and could drop the "Son of" from his character name. Koz has been playing "Svengoolie" ever since."
