Dwyane Wade‘s raw new documentary finds the veteran Miami Heat MVP baring it all. Literally.
The 38-year-old retired NBA superstar’s forthcoming ESPN documentary, “D. Wade: Life Unexpected,” captures Wade naked in the Heat’s locker room shower on the day of his retirement in April 2019.
Filmed over the course of 10 years by his longtime friend, cinematographer Bob Metelus, the scene, like so many others in the documentary, offers an unfiltered look into Wade’s life. Speaking alongside Meletus during a screening on Wednesday night at Soho House in New York, Wade admitted to the crowd — which included Imagine Documentaries execs Sara Bernstein and Justin Wilkes, as well as boss Ron Howard — that it was a “struggle” to decide how much to share.
“These are other people’s stories and other people’s lives that’s a part of yours and a lot of these things happened so long ago, you gotta bring them back … you have to relive it all again, so I have so many people to thank.”
Wade’s wife Gabrielle Union was not with Wade at the screening, although she appears in the film and has given her wholehearted support to the project, sources said.
Airing Sunday night, the resulting documentary is the culmination of a decade’s worth of footage, capturing Wade at both his highest and lowest moments, from confessing to Union, 47, that he fathered a child with another woman to the 2018 birth of their daughter Kaavia James via surrogacy. Viewers are also given a glimpse into Wade’s tumultuous early years before he found fame on the basketball court, with on-camera appearances by Wade’s mother, Jolinda Wade, a former convict and recovering addict, and Dwyane Wade Sr., who has battled his own drinking issues.
