R1, there was another Seventeen Magazine model in the Jayne Modean era whom I liked the look of even more. For the life of me, though, I can't remember her name, and I've tried looking her up (searches on "Seventeen magazine model 1980s" and so forth). I remember she was also blonde, a little cooler and less "pretty" than Jayne--a more sporty type. I think she may have had a little overbite and a distinctive chin. Do you have any idea who I mean? No idea how to find her.

Rosie Vela. She was genuinely pretty (a lot of models aren't) and had a mane of curly, strawberry blonde hair. She had aspirations as a musician and put out an album (with contributions from Donald Becker and Walter Fagan, of Steely Dan). It got good reviews but went nowhere. There was a bizarre GoFundMe account in recent years entitled "Rosie Vela Needs Our Urgent Help!" It told some crazy story about how she was severely mentally ill and very sick and needed money...just crazy stuff. I think it was a scam; the account isn't accepting money anymore. Anyway, I have no idea what happened to Rosie Vela. It might be interesting to find out.

by Anonymous | reply 133 | February 21, 2020 9:00 PM |
Google isn’t helping. It’s telling me there is a David Fumero born in 1972. He was a marine and apparently has a younger brother Joel who started a TV career in the late 90s. The book I remember was a nicely bound hardcover catalog (half the size of A4/8.5” x 11”) featuring one-to-two page colour and B&W photo collections of about 50 male supermodels, called something like “The Boss Hugo Guide to Male Supermodels.” I bought the book in 1996 (I think). It was possibly published that year or a year or two before.
Marcus Schenkenberg, Ty Beckford, and Simon Rex (another fave of mine) were all featured. I’m probably thinking of Joel Fumero who possibly had the modelling career and then tried to get into acting.
But then there is another Joel Fumero on IG who looks similar to older Joel, but is in his 20s for sure. Maybe it’s his son or nephew?
by Anonymous | reply 134 | February 21, 2020 9:08 PM |

Thanks for that R135. I believe that (Iconic) photo may be included in the book but under another model. I could be easily wrong and it just didn’t register with me at the time (despite being pretty well known). The photos I recall of the model in question were:
A) B&W photo of said model sitting on the shoulders of another model who was standing in the ocean. Both are wearing board shorts.
B) said model in B&W photo wearing black Speedos and a hat (maybe backwards or a beret) while sitting down. He also obviously has eye-liner on.
There was possibly another photo of him. Maybe those were the only two.
I think Bruce Weber took the lion’s share of photos featured in this book.
Anyway, thank you for allowing me to indulge.
*i mistakenly wrote the book was hardcover. It was soft cover, but an upgrade from magazine style (but the book made me hard har har).

Amanda Moore is another model that was everywhere in the 2000s, but nobody seems to talk about when models of that era are discussed. She went to my high school (she graduated the spring before I enrolled there), but got no attention locally despite it being a small town. by Anonymous | reply 195 | February 24, 2020 7:55 PM |
A lot of these older models have Instagram accounts so they can easily be looked up if they still want to be known. One who doesn't have an account is Yasmeen Ghauri. There is a fan account for her though that has over 25,000 followers, which is shit loads for the fan account of someone who was semi-famous over 30 years ago and is now keeping out of the limelight.

R194, you must be new here

I'm surprised no one's mentioned Canadian lesbian model Eve Salvail, especially since she had such a striking look, although that would make her a model no one remembers but me (I don't personally remember her because I was a baby). She's still active, every now and then.

Besides the Brazilian babes of Victoria's Secret, most of the top models of the 2000s are forgotten, even though the high fashion girls were far more interesting to look at, at least to a gay man like me.
Audrey Marnay was one of my faves.

R193 Didn’t know Amanda Moore, thanks, she's spectacular.
I know someone who was at school with Yasmin Le Bon back in the day - always beautiful and nice too apparently.

R198 In Model: The Ugly Business of Beautiful Women (published in 1995), Michael Gross declared her and Bridget Hall (who was also mentioned above) as "the models of the moment."

Speaking of lesbians... Jenny Shimizu. I believe she later became a cop.

Thanks r201, I've actually had my eye on that book, should definitely get round to reading it.
by Anonymous | reply 210 | February 25, 2020 3:08 AM |
^^ far from forgotten!

R210 It's juicy. I highly recommend. If DL ever started a book club, it would be before for it.

Barbara Minty. She was starting to become popular, married Steve McQueen the same year he died, then just disappeared.

Lisa Taylor — considering how big a deal she was in her day (late 70s), shes all but forgotten, especially compared to her contemporaries.
That’s not to say some people here don’t remember her, but very few who didn’t live thru that era have any idea who she is.
by Anonymous | reply 217 | February 25, 2020 5:44 AM |
^^ I was a baby when the 70's ended, but I knew very well who Lisa Taylor was through my interest in fashion and photography. She was in that super iconic Helmut Newton photo. Plus Calvin Klein used her in the 90's.
by Anonymous | reply 218 | February 25, 2020 5:53 AM |
Maybe we should just have a poll with a list of 150 names asking which ones do you remember? That way, we can know once and for all who were the supermodels that only you remembered.
That might shut up the thread context Nazis lol.
by Anonymous | reply 219 | February 25, 2020 6:33 AM |
R219 No. The concept is simpler than that......
by Anonymous | reply 220 | February 25, 2020 6:40 AM |
R219 I can only speak from my experience of course, but we’re about the same age, and almost none of my contemporaries (and I work in public relations and most do something similar or just closely follow celebrities/models more generally) have ever heard of her. I do remember the Calvin thing from the early 90s and I did read the Model book cover to cover, in which she’s featured very heavily. But she really did all but disappear right after her heyday.

R220 I was joking ...

In about 20 years time, which of today's models will still be remembered? Here's Imaan Hammam at the Versace show last Friday (unforunately the Versace collection is transitioning into Michael Kors).

Unfortunately today we are also getting complete horrors dumped on us in the name of "diversity", even though they don't look good, can't pose because their mobility is limited, make the runway incoherent and don't highlight the look or details of the clothes. Paloma Elsesser is being heavily pushed and is apparently now a superstar supermodel, even though she came out of nowhere and at a rather advanced age for a new model, without having gone through the professional career build up other models go through. In other words, she was handpicked because she's fat and Latina, so two woke "diversity" birds were killed with one stone (even though modelling is full of real Latinas).
She's not even a good walker and she knows it too, hence why she only posted the slo-mo version of her on the runway.

Tanga Moreau. I loved her late-90s Ralph Lauren ads.
by Anonymous | reply 233 | February 25, 2020 12:50 PM |
Bridget Hall is an interesting case. She was the it model and scored major contracts with Ralph Lauren and Maybelline while still in high school, in the 90s. Lauren supposedly regretted the long-term contract when her career failed to take off.
Then in 2000, she was the high fashion it model for a moment, but, again never really took off.
by Anonymous | reply 235 | February 25, 2020 12:54 PM |
I remember that she also seemed to have gotten a nose-job somewhere along the line. And looked slightly off as a result.
by Anonymous | reply 236 | February 25, 2020 1:18 PM |
Bridget Hall was such a strange case. Such fanfare and quick exposure then POOF she was gone.

R209 Jenny Shimizu found modeling tough and admitted she couldn't even learn to walk in high heels. I think she was a motorcycle mechanic before she was a model. Then a pass around girlfriend for those who wanted a lesbian best friend. I felt bad for her, this was the beginning of the push for diversities sake. Yet, they tried to change her.

Bridget Hall was really gorgeous..wow!
by Anonymous | reply 243 | February 25, 2020 8:33 PM |

Ultra-religous, redneckian model Lucas Babin who's today married with kids and a practicing lawyer. His dad is a Trumpian US Representative.

Yes, r242. You can still find some if you dig around, but otherwise you would never know if you only discovered them now just how "close" they used to be.

Susan Eldridge. I think she was known for fucking Terry Richardson at the time.

Her nose looks the same to me
by Anonymous | reply 252 | February 26, 2020 10:58 AM |
She had the nose job very young. It will sometimes change and shrink/cave-in over the years. She lost her career as she had serious substance abuse issues supposedly and people didn’t want to deal with her anymore. Also I heard that her mother was extremely controlling and a stage parent. Who knows how much of this is true but these are the rumors that I’ve heard over the years. She lives in the Hamptons now so can’t be doing too badly.

Leonardo DiCaprio dated Bridget Hall when she was underage.

R77 She's a real estate agent now. Also, she's aged incredibly well.

Amber Smith. She apparently destroyed her career by being a stalker.

I've followed Nadja Auermann on Instagram for a few months and I think this is either the first or second time she's posted something in that time. She reposted some stories by her agency of her and her rather attractive daughter at some Armani event in Paris. Although I thought it was a Harpers Bazaar event. Nadja is looking good!
