Impeachment was a triumph for Trump

I said, when the impeachment inquiry was started, mark my words, this will end up helping Trump. So much scorn from the true believers resulted!

Guess what? I was right.

Look at Trump's polling now. Two extremely troubling indicators:

a) His approval rating, though still well below 50% is the highest it's been since his inauguration. And since he was "cleared" by the Senate, it's STEADILY rising.

b) Even worse, his disapproval rating has completely sunk. It's nearing 50%, the lowest it's been for just about his entire presidency.

So, do the true believers finally get it? Yes, Trump is human refuse, but can we please recognize that most mildly political Americans are not ultralibs, and need to be approached very carefully if they are to be won over? Are we going to make the same mistake in whom we nominate for president?

by Anonymousreply 50May 23, 2020 3:35 AM

Agree with you about everything, OP

by Anonymousreply 1February 20, 2020 3:09 PM

Hey, the dude with the corn chip urine is a Trumpster! How's it going, Corn Chip Urine Troll? You get your blood sugars tested yet? I know it's hard to believe a Trumpster would end up with Type II diabetes but since your urine smells like Fritos, you should probably get that checked out. Good luck, Corn Chip Trumpster Urine Guy!

by Anonymousreply 2February 20, 2020 3:12 PM

Just to elaborate a bit, True Believers insist that, because they are so ultra-correct on a subject, EVERYONE will magically see the rightness of their position and agree and it will happen and unicorns will also be there to help us celebrate!

Meanwhile, back on planet earth, for YEARS Nancy Pelosi was patiently explaining that impeachment is seen extremely negatively by independents, who see the entire process as a) taking the choice of president from the ballot box and people's hands, and b) purely political infighting. She knew full well it would backfire. She was right, it did.

So, what situation are we confronted with now?

We have six or seven states we MUST convince to vote Democratic to get rid of Trump. What are those states like? Who can be swayed to vote D? Will they vote for a radical? These are people who are very willing to vote R, so the answer is almost definitely: "no fucking way."

Ok, so do we bring in the unicorns again, or do we win this time?

by Anonymousreply 3February 20, 2020 3:12 PM

Yes, Deplo-lites will be won over by a Jewish megabillionnaire or a gay man. I’d love to go through life as delusional as you are since it would make it seem so much easier.

by Anonymousreply 4February 20, 2020 3:13 PM

So, r4, who is the tactically correct candidate. We are all ears. Let's have the clear-eyed analysis, devoid of true believer think.

by Anonymousreply 5February 20, 2020 3:15 PM

It was definitely a bomb. The whole Russia conspiracy was.

by Anonymousreply 6February 20, 2020 3:16 PM

The Russia conspiracy was absolutely correct. That's basically been proven. There is a mountain of evidence.

The problem is, there's no smoking gun. The only reason Nixon was forced to resign was the discovery that the conversations in the Oval Office were on tape. Had it not been for that, Nixon would probably have weathered the storm.

by Anonymousreply 7February 20, 2020 3:19 PM

Op, I agreed with you back when the hearings started and I believe you now. The only thing that I would add is that the process made the democrats look weak and toothless.

by Anonymousreply 8February 20, 2020 3:19 PM

Still patiently waiting for the clear-sighted, True-Believer-free analysis of the best candidate to carry the Swing States, r4.

by Anonymousreply 9February 20, 2020 3:20 PM

Democrats have to stop trying to divine the minds of the people who have none. Also stop trying to focus group some mythical candidate who should check off some neat boxes conceived by DNC czars. The world has changed significantly since two years ago, let alone 2020. If you don’t believe the ability of your constituency to pick the right candidate, what’s the point, really? Go with the guns blazing, spread the message and stop relying on some think tank or Wall Street to do it. But, let them pick their pet candidate, and we’ll be here in 4 years with the same old tired chestnuts.

by Anonymousreply 10February 20, 2020 3:27 PM

I was born in 1964, which put me, as a child, on the playground only 25 years after WWII ended, and I've commented to my best friend (who I met in kindergarten) that it seems odd that we were closer to the end of the Holocaust but here we are today, 50 years later and are inching toward the same Nazi policy and beliefs that, as children, we asked our teacher why no one did anything about what was going on in Germany leading up to WWII, and then, as the world became aware of what the Germans were doing to the Jews. This question has plagued me all my life, and only now am I beginning to see why no one said or did anything to stop Hitler.

At least, 50 years from now, when a child asks why no one tried to stop Trump, our heirs and descendants can say "Democrats tried."

by Anonymousreply 11February 20, 2020 3:28 PM

^^2016, I wanted to say

by Anonymousreply 12February 20, 2020 3:28 PM

We just need an economic crash... soon.

Most people don’t follow the news as closely as DLers and they aren’t aware of the deep corruption in Trump’s presidency. They just look at the extra few dollars in their paycheck (without understanding Trump’s trillion dollar deficits) and think everything is going just fine.

by Anonymousreply 13February 20, 2020 3:32 PM

R11 if by trying you mean going through the motions knowing the outcome is inevitable that they would lose then, yes, they tried. There were/are better ways to go about calling him out other than impeachment. Just spacing out and continuing hearings and running ads in swing states with the sound bytes would have yield better outcome than impeachment.

History would have been unkind to Donald Trump even without the impeachment.

by Anonymousreply 14February 20, 2020 3:37 PM

And history has been unkind to Hitler, but I don't think that weighed heavily on his mind any more than the fact that history will not be kind weighs on Trump's.

by Anonymousreply 15February 20, 2020 3:40 PM

R2 Hey asshole, could you please tell us what was untrue about what the OP wrote?

[quote]Most people don’t follow the news as closely as DLers and they aren’t aware of the deep corruption in Trump’s presidency. They just look at the extra few dollars in their paycheck (without understanding Trump’s trillion dollar deficits) and think everything is going just fine.

True.

I just checked Nate Silver's Trump approval average among registered/likely voters. It's at 45.5%, the highest since March 2017.

The impeachment, Mueller, Stormy Daniels, pee tapes....etc... all for naught.

And Bloomberg is supposed to be the savior? How's that looking after last night?

by Anonymousreply 16February 20, 2020 3:40 PM

Nancy Pelosi was right to drag her feet.

Impeachment was a huge gamble and we lost.

by Anonymousreply 17February 20, 2020 3:41 PM

Trump can win with less than 50% of the vote. In 2020 it will probably be a lower percentage to win as the blue states got bluer for naught and their totals won’t affect anything.

by Anonymousreply 18February 20, 2020 3:48 PM

R17 It was necessary but since we knew from the get-go that he would not be removed from office, they should have gotten the whole thing over quickly.

Instead, the hours and hours of hearings only gave the Republicans their chance to drive home their message about Hunter Biden.

And creepy looking bug-eyed Adam Schiff should not have been allowed to go on for hours basically repeating himself over and over again. The whole process should have been short and sweet. Done. Now lets move on. Instead it went on for months.

by Anonymousreply 19February 20, 2020 3:52 PM

So the House is just supposed to look the other way when a President colludes with a foreign government to dig up dirt on political rivals. Impeachment was never about Trump winning or losing, it was about protecting our democracy.

by Anonymousreply 20February 20, 2020 3:52 PM

R15 the comment about history being unkind was in response to r11 saying that in 50 years democrats can say at least they tried. What they "tried" was merely for show and history. The comment had nothing to do with what Trump thinks about his legacy.

by Anonymousreply 21February 20, 2020 3:56 PM

OP you are looking at only one aspect of impeachment, if the Democrats had refused to impeach Trump after he committed obvious crimes, many Democrats would have been pissed and figured why bother to vote, both political parties are protecting Trump. You can not look at only part of the situation. I actually think it is still the economy that is pushing up Trumps numbers not impeachment, polls showed most people wanted Trump impeached and removed from office. You won't agree because you clearly think only you is correct but there are other valid theories out there than yours.

by Anonymousreply 22February 20, 2020 4:10 PM

Taking the high road, doing the right thing and protecting our all ready scuttled democracy will be of little importance when tRump is reelected and is able to change the face of SCOTUS and every single federal judge he can.

Even when he is finally gone, he stench will still be with us.

by Anonymousreply 23February 20, 2020 4:30 PM

Rule of law is rule of law irrespective of optics or if impeachment “worked.” (Which is a retarded notion anyway...it was always known that the senate would save Trump’s ass).

This was the Democrats following their constitutional responsibilities. Nothing more. And I would counter that they looked weak. Schiff was masterful. As were the prosecution and many of the witnesses called to testify.

Impeachment here was never deployed as a tool for influencing the electorate. Full stop. That’s a straw man argument.

So gloat all you want, bootsy ...but history will show that the Democrats did exactly as they were supposed to.

by Anonymousreply 24February 20, 2020 4:33 PM

omg the "he shouldn't haven been impeached" posters are absurd. This the most lawless, dangerous piece of shit to ever occupy the office. It would have been a great act of cowardice to not impeach him.

Remember most people who answer polls are whites over 50 years old. Those people are the dumb ones! Trump's base is mostly white people over 40 years old. The rest of the country largely hates him. Younger people don't answer polls. I've never been polled and I don't answer phone calls from people I don't know anyway.

A lot of his positive approval is based solely on the economy. It's also only February. He has plenty of time to do and say shit that brings his numbers crashing down again.

by Anonymousreply 25February 20, 2020 4:36 PM

[quote]This was the Democrats following their constitutional responsibilities.

Not really. Pelosi was quite reluctant to impeach because she knew what might happen...and is happening.

And Schiff's effectiveness waned the longer it went on and the more repetitive it got.

The 1000 paper cuts was the way to go.

by Anonymousreply 26February 20, 2020 4:40 PM

Pelosi knew that impeachment was the nuclear option and she wasn’t going to use it lightly or use it to appease progressives. Trump crossed a line, a big line. There was no other option but impeachment.

by Anonymousreply 27February 20, 2020 4:48 PM

Polls are useless anymore. Wait til the election.

by Anonymousreply 28February 20, 2020 4:57 PM

In 50 years no one will care, because in 50 years there is a very strong chance that the Earth will no longer have life on it.

by Anonymousreply 29February 20, 2020 5:01 PM

Bernie is NOT the answer.

by Anonymousreply 30February 20, 2020 5:29 PM

At least the Impeachment trial gave Sanders a chance to nap, several days in a row, on the clock. Can you image what would have happened if he hadn't had that opportunity? Another fall in the shower, resulting in a concussion or brain bleed? Another heart attack?

Whew! We lucked out, y'all!

by Anonymousreply 31February 20, 2020 5:58 PM

[quote]Democrats have to stop trying to divine the minds of the people who have none.

That's the sort of elitism ("unless you support Sanders or Warren, you literally have no mind") that lost Hillary the election in 2016. Her campaign wrote off the poor working class whites of the swing states. And those people voted for Trump, and he won by a hair's breath.

Meanwhile, both Bill Clinton and Obama worked those people HEAVILY in their campaigns, and they were able to sway just enough of them to carry most of the swing states.

So I think you're literally as wrong as you can be. Your "let's choose the person we adore and everyone else will fall in line" strategy is just the sort of true-believer magical thinking that Trump needs us to engage in. Guess what he did in 2016? He poured it on for those "mindless" voters, and now he's in the white house.

by Anonymousreply 32February 20, 2020 6:05 PM

The economy could take a hit in months if the supply chains from China break down. That might cause people to vote against Trump

by Anonymousreply 33February 20, 2020 6:18 PM

There’s a shit-stain on his page of history.

by Anonymousreply 34February 20, 2020 6:23 PM

Well, I guess there's no doubt about it now — Bootsy Gumdrop is a right-wing shill. Every post is conservative propaganda of some kind designed to trash or demoralize true progressives.

Pay it no mind.

But NICE TRY, BORIS. At least Bootsy-Gumdrop has the balls to sign her posts consistently with an authenticated account. We haven't had a conservative that brave on Datalounge since peg.

But now you know where he's coming from: deep inside Trump's anus. She's someone who wants absolutely no policy changes from the failed, Republican status quo.

I

[quote]Pelosi knew that impeachment was the nuclear option and she wasn’t going to use it lightly or use it to appease progressives. Trump crossed a line, a big line. There was no other option but impeachment.

There were other options that they chose not to take. They rushed it with witnesses. They didn't wait for FOIA requests, some of which that came in after the fact would have provided additional witnesses. They should have gone for Bolton.

It was an ill-time rushed affair all so democrats could say, "see we took the high road, we had no other choice." The high road sucks. I'd rather win.

by Anonymousreply 36February 20, 2020 7:52 PM

It's better for Trump to have a sellout Democrat from the failed Washington Establishment.

Somebody like Pete will make sure the powers that be don't have to change much and won't have to expand social programs for the 99%, whose fortunes will just continue to diminish.

Someone like Biden will 1) at least preserve conservative policies if he wins and 2) be easy for Trump to blame for decades of failure and making terrible calls like Iraq, the way Trump clobbered Hilary.

by Anonymousreply 37February 20, 2020 7:56 PM

I get your pessimism, but remember, there are more scandals on the horizon. It all depends on who the Dem nominee is and right now, that ain't looking so hot. Bloomberg was an absolute disaster last night. The purple states (WI, PA, MI, FL, AZ) are *not* going to vote for a socialist. The best we can hope for is to maintain the majority in the House and possibly pick up the Senate.

Polls show most Americans overwhelmingly fault the Republicans for aborting justice in the Senate.

This is exactly what progressives want. The obstruction of justice combined with appointing rapists to the Supreme Court will be fresh in the voters' minds as they vote against Republican senators in DROVES this November.

REPUBLICANS WILL LOSE CONTROL OF THE SENATE THIS YEAR BECAUSE OF THEIR ABHORRENT REACTION TO THE IMPEACHMENT AND EVIDENCE.

by Anonymousreply 41February 20, 2020 8:03 PM

WRONG, r19.

Clearly, 2016 proves that the purple states are not going to vote for a Republican-Lite sellout like Hillary Clinton.

Hillary was a dreadful, demoralizing candidate who failed the people miserably with her Iraq and Wall Street support, just like Joe Biden.

Vote tallies show that Hillary lost Obama voters in droves. If all the Green Party voters had stayed with the Democrats in 2016, Hillary would have won WISCONSIN, MICHIGAN and PENNSYLVANIA and with them, the whole election.

BUT HILLARY LOST BECAUSE SHE'S NOT A GENUINE PROGRESSIVE. Just a Republican sellout whose 30-year appeasement of the right has harmed America immensely.

OP, please tweet Pod Save America. Those dummies were desperate for impeachment.

by Anonymousreply 46February 24, 2020 3:57 AM

I really can’t see it as a “triumph“. It was like a car crash that totals a car but the person walks away unscathed. More like a pyretic victory. He’s been tarnished. That’s not good for anyone.

by Anonymousreply 47February 25, 2020 12:35 AM

Troll.

by Anonymousreply 48May 23, 2020 3:27 AM

And then coronavirus hit the U.S.

How's Trump doing now, OP?

by Anonymousreply 49May 23, 2020 3:32 AM

I thought someone had bumped this because they just heard Bill Maher say the same thing on his show tonight (that the impeachment was a mistake). I don't agree. I still think it was the right thing to do.
