Attachment disorder is real and harrowing but millions of children are adopted as babies and have no such issues. Of course there can be mental illnesses. Russian orphanages are the stuff of nightmares. Add to that the fact that most Russian babies abandoned to those places were born to alcoholic, druggie, or mentally ill parents, and you have a good chance of getting majorly defective genes Many of the behavioral features of FAS don’t show themselves until early teen years, so it’s like a waiting game for many adoptive parents.

Better to adopt from Vietnam, orphanages there are staffed by grandmother types and the homes are just that, homes not institutions. The babies and kids there ended up in the orphanages due to parents being too poor to take care of them, so they give up rights to let their kids have a chance of being adopted. I know 4 sets of couples 3 of them gay who have adopted kids from China and Vietnam. All of them are well adjusted kids and great students to boot. One of my friends adopted a baby girl from Vietnam 12 years ago and he was single when he did it. Vietnam back then had no problem with him being gay and single. R120, the good news is that some borderlines DO get much better if they get completely sober, take their meds consistently, and as prescribed, and go to therapy for at least a couple of years. But they have to grasp the concept that while their personality disorder is not something that they chose to have, that indeed they do have it, and self medicating makes it worse, and that the personality disorder, compounded with self medicating, is ruining their lives, their relationships with others, and their possibilities of living a better life.

BPD is only treatment resistant because most borderlines haven’t the self awareness necessary to get sober, remain sober, and adhere to whatever therapeutic modality they are being treated with. But some do, and a lot of it resolves by the time they hit their 30s.

They must get sober and stay sober. That’s the first thing. Then they have to really desire good mental health, which means recognizing that currently, they don’t have it. Another thing that helps them immensely are regularly, day to day routines. Getting up, going to work, and remaining employed consistently is a HUGE deal, because it allows them to interact regularly with people who aren’t their families, so triggers are less likely, and they can observe and learn how others deal with challenges in their professional lives, and apply it to themselves.

BPD, like anything else regarding behavioral issues, can be anywhere from mild, to severe. The ones who are mild to moderate are obviously more susceptible to recovering, adjusting behavioral responses to triggers and stress, and eventually adapting to processes which allow them to have pretty normal lives. It takes lots of patience and discipline, but it’s totally achievable if the commit to it.

From what I have observed, the hardest cases to treat successfully are the ones who have eating disorder comorbidities. If bulimia and/or anorexia are involved, the resistance to treatment is pretty high. Not sure why that is, but I’m assuming it because it’s a self contained and easily accessible form of dealing with triggers and stress. One doesn’t have to find drugs, buy them, ingest them, or drink alcohol, in order to deprive one’s self from food or self harming by forced, self induced vomiting. I had a roommate who had this, and she relapsed constantly, even though she earnestly was attempting to recover. She was really bright and well educated, as well as self aware. Fortunately, her family did everything possible to help her get better, and eventually, she did. Another friend of mine who graduated with honors and is now a human rights attorney, also was highly challenged, yet she too, eventually got better in her early 30s, and has remained sober, doesn’t stop eating, and is doing amazingly well.

This kid seems to be pretty self aware. She understands what is happening in at least several stages of cycles in recovery. If she can manage to remain physically sober, she’s got a shot. And it helps that she can probably get the best care possible, which is probably 90% of not being able to recover.

There is little regulation of therapeutic bording schools. Sounds like this one did her no favors. They had a lot of kids in the family, a mix of birth and adopted. Borderlines are very disruptive to family life. They may well have thought the school would be helpful. She was likely sexually abused before, it was her acting out in response that led to her being sent to a therapeutic bording school in the first place.

If Spielberg and Kate have that much money, all that education, influence, religion and strong a family unit, it’s utterly a failure on their part that she’s resorting to porn.

There’s nothing they can do about her borderline personality disorder but they haven’t supported her they way they should have.
