You really think he's not on the same level as Jude "Box Office Poison" Law or Hugh Grant?!
by Anonymous | reply 1 | February 19, 2020 6:17 PM |
He was big - then.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | February 19, 2020 6:19 PM |
This was after the Meg Ryan divorce and he got a lot of sympathy at the time.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | February 19, 2020 6:26 PM |
He wasn't on the cover. He was on the flap.
Big difference.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | February 19, 2020 6:26 PM |
His fiancée was 9-years-old in 2003.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | February 19, 2020 6:27 PM |
R2 Not in 2003, come on.
He was promising actor in the 1980s.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | February 19, 2020 6:34 PM |
R1 Jude Law was a hot big star in the early 2000s. He was everywhere at the particular time.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | February 19, 2020 6:35 PM |
He had received a lot of good press from his role in "Far from Heaven" which had come out the previous Fall.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | February 19, 2020 6:35 PM |
R3 Makes sense. I think this could be the only reason to include him on that cover.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | February 19, 2020 6:36 PM |
He's had a 40 year career. You really think he can't compare to Jude Law or Ewan McGregor or Edward Norton? Btw, he was coming off a critically acclaimed film (Far From Heaven) and a box office hit (The Rookie) at the time
by Anonymous | reply 11 | February 19, 2020 6:38 PM |
It was either him or Randy Quaid.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | February 19, 2020 6:38 PM |
we were bombarded with Jude Law in those aughts. And, America declined.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | February 19, 2020 6:48 PM |
17 years is a long time to be hysterical over this, OP.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | February 19, 2020 7:16 PM |
R14 I'm not hysterical. On DL, We discuss topics from 50 years ago!
by Anonymous | reply 15 | February 19, 2020 7:17 PM |
His 2002 movie The Rookie did surprisingly well commercially and critically, there was even talk of a Best Actor Oscar nomination, but that was not to be, so people thought for a time he would be a leading man.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | February 19, 2020 7:26 PM |
Jude Law looks gorgeous there. It's a shame he aged so poorly.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | February 19, 2020 7:27 PM |
I like Dennis Quaid and used to think of him as leading man material. He was great in Far From Heaven. But whoo boy has he made some shitty choices in the past 15 years or so. I tried to watch this P.O.S. only because he was in it (as a serial killer!). Could not get through it, not even for the camp factor. And yeah, it's fucking gross that he's dating a fetus. Old egos clearly surpass brain cells.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | February 19, 2020 7:46 PM |
In pictures like this, demand to be on the right. Poor Matt Damon was relegated to the far left and ended up on the third flap of the foldout cover! How embarrassing!
by Anonymous | reply 19 | February 19, 2020 7:47 PM |
R19: I think Matt Damon has had the last laugh.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | February 19, 2020 9:17 PM |
the real question is whether these people were in the same photo together, or was this the magic of combining cropped photos.
i can't see these guys all clearing their schedule at the same time. also, that strange background seems designed to hide fakery of this sort.
they might be all headliners, but the only real actors are Nicholson, Hanks and Samuel L. Jackson, with Law getting an honourable mention for character work.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | February 19, 2020 9:26 PM |
What’s that yellow blob centre left?
by Anonymous | reply 22 | February 19, 2020 9:30 PM |
Ugh, You do like Hammy actors, r21.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | February 19, 2020 9:32 PM |
R21 They were. I remember this issue and they had pics of the behind-the-scenes of the shoot, which included a photo of Brad Pitt lifting his arm to show his gross pitt (heh) stain.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | February 19, 2020 9:39 PM |
Tammy looks good there too.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | February 19, 2020 9:40 PM |
R23 go big, or go home. Ford, Quaid, and Pitt can't really act. Grant plays the same douche over and over. Damon has been good in one thing i've seen him in (afflack outdoes him, which is somewhat sad). 3 expression Tammy--the less said, the better. this list is comprised of box office headliners from the look of things. so out of this group, yes, i would say that those are the best ones. most of the better actors are actually character actors, so wouldn't be here anyway.
oh, and i almost missed Cheadle there, hiding under someone's armpit. he's good, and too rarely seen. maybe he's too low key to be in there.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | February 19, 2020 9:51 PM |
Why was Don Cheadle included?
by Anonymous | reply 27 | February 19, 2020 9:52 PM |
Who is the white guy seated in front of Edward Norton?
by Anonymous | reply 28 | February 19, 2020 9:53 PM |
Don Cheadle was never a big star. Dennis was a major heartthrob. Fraus LOVED Dennis
by Anonymous | reply 29 | February 19, 2020 9:53 PM |
Jude Law, R28.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | February 19, 2020 9:57 PM |
I watched a bit of his Christmas sitcom Merry Happy Whatever last December and it was unforgivable.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | February 19, 2020 9:58 PM |
It makes me sad that no magazine today would be worth the time for A Listers and legends of that magnitude (particularly the front panel) to take a break and pose for a cover like that. The star wattage in that photo is insane. And how far VF has fallen in particular which is covered quite a bit in another thread. That I’m too lazy to link.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | February 19, 2020 10:03 PM |
What actors would be included in the 2020 version?
The Rock, Zac Efron, Chris Hemsworth, Tyler Perry, Adam Driver, Brad Pitt, Robert Pattinson, Armie Hammer, Henry Cavill, Timothee Cabernet, John Krasinski, Chris Pine, Chris Evans, Chris Pratt, Simu Liu, Tom Holland, Tom Hiddlesworth, Henry Golding, Connor Jessop, Colton Haynes
by Anonymous | reply 33 | February 19, 2020 10:21 PM |
Only on DL is Colton Haynes an A lister.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | February 19, 2020 10:29 PM |
So you would NOT include him?
by Anonymous | reply 35 | February 19, 2020 10:34 PM |
Add Rami Malek, Harry Styles, and James Marsden to the list.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | February 19, 2020 10:36 PM |
Sure he was, Op. That’s a ludicrous statement in your title.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | February 19, 2020 10:40 PM |
I see Brad’s small dick made the cover.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | February 19, 2020 10:52 PM |
Why was Ben Afleck not invited? Oh wait, nevermind.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | February 19, 2020 11:00 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 40 | February 20, 2020 2:01 AM |
Henry Cavill, R33? He’s no box office draw and no actor.

Colto.

[quote]Jude Law was a hot big star in the early 2000s
Correction: Hollywood was trying to make Jude Law a hot big star in the early 2000s, shoving him down our throats, despite proof positive he was box office poison, until Chris Rock called him and Hollywood out in his Oscar monologue in 2005. Yes, Chris Rock killed Jude Law's career in one swoop.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | February 20, 2020 5:52 AM |
[R8], [R9]: Dennis Quaid channeled some "Old Hollywood", leading man glamour in, "Far From Heaven".
by Anonymous | reply 44 | February 20, 2020 6:35 AM |
Before far from heaven was released, Dennis Quaid dropped his representation for making him “play a faggot”. I know for a fact it happened. And it revitalized his career. He made millions of dollars as a leading man In major movies In the decade that followed (Usually as an actor for hire when all of the big names passed).

R46 was SUPPOSED to say I had no idea he turned down Big, Sleepless in Seattle and League of Their Own, but was replaced by that tiresome Daily Mail disclaimer.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | February 20, 2020 1:04 PM |
He's been in a couple of dog movies in recent years...real tear jerkers! but quite good and whole family can enjoy.
My friend met him in a restaurant downtown years and years ago. He was by himself and a nice guy, was chatting with my friend, they were outside smoking a cig at the same time.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | February 20, 2020 1:15 PM |
Probably because of Far From Heaven.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | February 20, 2020 1:18 PM |
[quote]I like Dennis Quaid and used to think of him as leading man material.
He was definitely leading man material in "The Big Easy" -- sexy as hell. I thought he was serviceably charismatic in his late 80s early 90s roles but I think the drugs did him in.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | February 20, 2020 1:26 PM |
Remember how he referred to Brokeback Mountain as a "chick flick" while introducing the film at the 2006 Golden Globes? That was a super cringe-worthy moment. I wonder if he came up with that lousy joke himself or if it was fed to him by the screenwriters via teleprompter?
by Anonymous | reply 51 | February 20, 2020 1:42 PM |
Jude Law took any role he could get after he got divorced from Sadie Frost to recoup what he lost in the divorce. Then Chris Rock mocked him at his Oscar monologue. The overexposure did him in. I believe it was also that time when that dick slip pap pic was published. His receding hairline didn't help either.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | February 20, 2020 1:49 PM |
I never understood Law's appeal. Never found him beautiful or attractive and he's a shit actor. I hope he reads this.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | February 20, 2020 4:02 PM |
He was selling them insurance and got in the way.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | February 20, 2020 4:10 PM |
I always thought he was sexy. He was good in that Billy Bob show 'Goliath' recently.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | February 20, 2020 4:10 PM |
Jude Law was never attractive. But the media (and women) raved about him so much so everyone started believing it.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | February 20, 2020 7:49 PM |
Women never cared about him, that's why his movies bombed
by Anonymous | reply 57 | February 20, 2020 7:52 PM |
Remember when Jude Law played the ideal male in AI. He was the fantasy robot hooker. I was like “who would hire that?!?”

I utterly disagree. I adored his beauty from the time I was a young teenager. I was in awe of it.

Same here.

Having Jude Law emerge from a bathtub full frontal center stage in Broadway's "Indiscretions" was not a bad thing.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | February 20, 2020 9:04 PM |
Jude Law has found this thread.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | February 20, 2020 9:13 PM |
I have to agree with the majority of posters regarding Jude Law. He is the pear of hot actors. He was good looking for, like, a day, but not good before or after. But make no mistake, during that one day he was hot as fuck (or ripe, if he were a pear).
by Anonymous | reply 64 | February 20, 2020 9:33 PM |
R64 This pear metaphor you speak of is unknown to me, where do you come from?

by Anonymous | reply 67 | February 20, 2020 10:17 PM |
The reason why Ben Affleck isn't part of the cover?
One word: Gigli (released 2003)
Two words: Gobble gobble
That relationship with J-Lo, and how it played out in the gossip rags, ruined Ben's career at the time, but he made a comeback when he settled down with Jennifer Garner.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | February 20, 2020 10:18 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 69 | February 20, 2020 10:19 PM |
I wanted some daddy boy play when he was Jake Gyllenhaal’s father in The Day After Tomorrow.
by Anonymous | reply 70 | February 20, 2020 10:22 PM |
Chris Rock was not "calling out" Jude Law. What Rock was doing was commenting on how during his lifetime the idea of what made a huge movie star had changed so that now someone his own age like Jude Law was considered a big star, when to his mind a big star had to be someone older like Jack Nicholson.
But he delivered the joke badly so that humorless Sean Penn (like you) thought he was "calling out" Jude Law.
by Anonymous | reply 71 | February 20, 2020 10:23 PM |
Jude Law is/was hot to some here because he’s British. And we all know how America’s obsession with Britishness was back then. Lot’s of awards and roles wasted on the mediocre based on their accent. Some were straight on failures in the UK who upon landing in America became classy, highbrow and cultured.
It takes time before people get on to their con and they get discarded. They will have made a lot of dough in the meantime. But the actual British invasions never brought little actual talent.
by Anonymous | reply 72 | February 21, 2020 2:58 AM |
R71. Jack Nicholson wasn’t mentioned anywhere in that monologue. Jude Law was contrasted with Tom Cruise. And boy, was Chris Rock correct! Hollywood dropped him like a hot potato.

Quaid used to get some good roles. I loved him in "Breaking Away" and "Postcards from the Edge". His career has hit the wall and he makes shit. When did his nose get huge?
by Anonymous | reply 77 | February 21, 2020 4:28 AM |
They needed someone for the pivot position after the shoot. The real story was H ugh Grant's insisting that a circle jerk was just a really obnoxious dude with a hula hoop.

Dennis Quaid was very good in The Right Stuff. Pancho Barnes herself called him a pudknocker.
