At what point is enough, enough
How many cats are too many cats?

If your entire house smells like cat piss, then you have too many cats.

Depends. How large is the house? How well do you keep clean? Can you afford regular and emergency vet care? If they're outdoor cats, how big is your yard? Is it safe and fenced in from dogs and coyotes? Are you willing to spay/neuter the cats--ALL the cats? How is YOUR physical and mental health? Are you able and willing to buy them good, healthful food for them (NO bullshit vegan fuckery or bullshit cheap crap food), even if it means YOU go without?
Some people can manage 20+ cats with no trouble; while for others, one cat is too many.

One.

I think over 3 is too many unless you are a Hemingway and have a foundation for them.

Mother said one can never have enough cats

i am at peak cat with 2. i never intended the second one, but the neighbors moved away and deliberately left the second outside starving and in heat.
my first cat was not pleased, but has adjusted. now she has someone to fight with.

Dear Edie at R5:
You and your crazy ass mother had so many damn cats, their piss rotted and structurally weakened the support beams on the first floor.

Three is too many. Two is the most you should have.
Jackson Galaxy says you should have this many cat litter boxes in your house: # of cats + 1.

Agree with R3
by Anonymous | reply 9 | February 17, 2020 7:39 PM |
One..
by Anonymous | reply 10 | February 17, 2020 7:47 PM |
Three has always worked for me. Never planned it that way but it just happened with random stray kittens, etc. Have always lived in cities: NYC, LA, London and have managed quite well but have always had a two bedroom two bath and two to three litter boxes with great ventilation and lots of toys and stuff to climb.

Depends OP, do you enjoy having company or cooking for others? Dinner parties? I had a friend when I was younger who had an entire room of litter boxes, and you couldn't have paid me enough to eat anything that came out of that kitchen.
Two roughly around the same age are enough. More than that and you're no longer the master of your home but rather the emergency feed supply should you drop dead alone, with.. the...cats....

I once knew a guy who had a dozen cats. He went througha depressive phase where he didn't change the litter box. Eventually, he had to replace the floors.

r7 That's why you got the dump for a steal
by Anonymous | reply 14 | February 17, 2020 8:35 PM |
3, but 2 is better. 1 is fine.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | February 17, 2020 9:19 PM |
More than one.

I broke it off with my boyfriend of 4 years, after he added a third cat. He complained that I used too many paper towels. I constantly cleaned the kitchen counters because I knew the cats walked on them. He left to buy groceries one Saturday morning; I packed the few personal items I kept at his house, and left a nice note written on a paper towel.

Ugh, R17, you were good to get out.
Like I said @R2, there are a lot of factors, chief among them is how well you keep clean. Some people is jes' plain nasty, whether they have one cat, no cats, or ten cats. Plenty of people I would never eat from, and they aren't pet people. Others who have 4-5 in the house and 2-3 outside, and you never would know they had even one animal, seriously.
In my entire life I've had only two cats that ever went outside the box for any reason, and both were older when it started. One had epilepsy; the other was diagnosed with lymphoma at 9 years. I obsessively cleaned after both of them.

Well, Jackson's free to come over and take over the maintenance my litter boxes, R8. I have two for two cats and that's enough to handle. I grew up with three or four cats around at all times. As a part of a family, that's fun, and many hands are there to care. If you're on your own like me, I think one or two cats are enough. To give a high level of care for more than that and still have a life outside of it would become difficult. You also can't anticipate illness or accidents of your pets and what those can do to your personal energy and your bank account, not to mention how much it hurts to see your little furry one suffer. I'm there right now, so please believe me on that. I adore my boys with all my being and I'm so thankful for them. I wish everyone on here the best of luck with their pets.

*Apologies for the lack of paragraph breaks. I thought I inserted them, but I guess they didn't take.

If you have more than two cats you are a crazy cat person. This is a fact.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | February 17, 2020 10:32 PM |
One.

If you have more than two you’re known as a “cat lady.”
