All those celebrity news blogs used to be clever. Then everything changed around the time the Real Housewives franchise took off. Celebrity news now revolves around all those "unscripted" reality shows.

r21, me too. I check in to gawk at the Metafilter trainwreck every now and then. It's really sad what it's become. I get the feeling that the owner (Cortex) is holding out for a high-paying tech gig that never comes. He was always the weakest link of the original three leaders/whatever you want to call them. I think Metafilter will one day shutter with no warning and that will be the end of it.

"Dlisted Soap Opera Central"
Soap Opera central! Ha! I forgot about the soap blogs. I used to get drunk and post things I knew would piss off the mid-western housewives. Like please fire Greenlee and Ryan (AMC) they're are stinking up the show and Vicki (OLTL) is a hambone. How does she keep winning Emmys? . It was all true though.

by Anonymous | reply 31 | February 16, 2020 4:18 PM |
Sites like MetaFilter are really vulnerable because moderators have so much power. A heavy-handed mod or a mod with an ideological axe to grind can effectively wreck a forum, turning it into an echo chamber. This is why so many of the forums on Reddit are unreadable circle jerks— dissension is banned.

Buzzfeed. Back before it was full SJW and there were fun quizzes to kill time.
Survivorsucks. So irreverent and fun like DL, but reddit traffic has killed so many message boards (and tapa talk SUCKS).
Dailykos. L-O-fucking-L
Most sites turning into a vote-karma based system have really killed what made the net fun. Old style message boards meant you actually had to read through what others said. It’s why I like DL. We mock the Chicoms and their social credit score, but look what things like Reddit do to us and discourse. Blah.

Another vote for dlisted. I will add slate and av club as well as most entertainment and culture blogs. Some time around the late 2000s I noticed that sites like av club, slate, etc started to write with an identical voice complete with identical opinions. It was like they had become monolithic , with the exact same thoughts on everything from current controversies to reviews of movies and TV shows. I also stopped reading Gawker long before it was shut down. I got tired of their sanctimonious finger wagging. They were a sleazy gossip site but towards the end all the columnists seemed to be on a soap box 24/7.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | February 16, 2020 7:43 PM |
Celebitchy ❤️ my beginning in online opinion-giving. It makes me laugh when I go there now (extremely rare) it’s so frau-ish, and I’m a masculine butch-Kween.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | February 16, 2020 7:46 PM |
R32 A big problem with reddit is you don't really get to see an accurate assortment of opinions. The comments you see first are the most popular, while anyone with a different view is completely buried underneath 700 other circle jerky comments. Here, you see comments in the order that they are written. Whether they have 50 ww or zero doesn't make a difference.

Yeah ... AfterElton started to go downhill after turning into TheBacklot, which then became totally insufferable after Logo bought it and turned it into NewNowNext. .. Does anyone go there? by Anonymous | reply 68 | February 16, 2020 11:12 PM |
IMDb forums were overrun by trolls and troublemakers but if you looked deeper there were fantastic discussions about vintage, foreign, or relatively obscure films-- sometimes cast and crew members would chime in. For the most part posters on these forums behaved themselves because they all shared a genuine love for movies. I haven't found a viable alternative for in-depth conversations about older films. Yes, there's Reddit, but Reddit's format doesn't lend itself to this sort of discussion, unfortunately. Also the majority of Redditors appear to have a mental age of 12.

Anyone heard of SodaHead? Many years ago, it was my introduction to blogs where you could post and discuss almost any topic. Realized there were too many ignorant teens and judgmental conservative types, so I left. It's gone now, but who cares?
Ten years ago, Celebitchy used to have funny snarky comments and articulate posters. Gradually it became infested with pedantic fraus and became an echo chamber. Kaiser, the main blogger/moderator who tried to copy Michael K's writing style, removes any comments that don't agree with her narrative. The snarky commenters left. It's heavily moderated because Kaiser is a controlling bitch.
I don't visit dlisted as often as I used to. Too cliquish. The "veteran" posters gang up on the newer ones. The celeb stanning for Jennifer Aniston and the venom for Angelina Jolie is ridiculous. Celebitchy is the reverse: they hate Aniston and revere Jolie. Very little middle ground.
Tom and Lorenzo got full of themselves. If you strongly disagree with their opinions, they respond in such a snooty tone. And the regulars are sycophantic toward them. Plus, how long can one talk about fashion? It gets boring very quickly.
HuffPo and Towleroad are shadows of their former selves.
That's enough complaining for now. Don't ever change, DL.

Dlisted was fucking hilarious. I stopped in 2009. Queerty, Craigslist, and LPSG. lpsg bans everybody for the smallest shit, even people who contribute a lot of content on their site. They'll especially ban you if you mention anything hinting at Trans. I said a guy's chest looked trans once and they called me transphobic and banned me. Fucking crazy.

Atkol.com message boards. When I was 12, 13 yoa or so and started to sneak and obsess over gay porn - this was the place to talk porn. A lot of the porn stars actually posted there as well. At some point, I guess the store changed hands and everything just went dead.

I liked all of the above-mentioned celebrity gossip sites when they snarked on actual celebrities like Paltrow, Cruise, Jake G. etc. Then they started with the reality show personalities and D-listers and other people I couldn't give two fucks about so I stopped reading them.
by Anonymous | reply 80 | February 18, 2020 7:49 AM |
There was a moment there when I thought the owner of Towelroad could have sold up for a goodling amount. However the site then became obsessed with gay marriage to the point where - if you didn't really care about it - there was no point in visiting. A few years down the track it now resembles a generic junk news site. What a lost opportunity.

Harry's Place, Hurryupharry.org - I visited every day to discuss politics. It was a spot where people who support labor/labour but aren't doctrinaire on all left-wing issues could discuss Middle East politics, irrational left-wing support for anti-western Islamists, could write something complimentary about Israel without being slammed as Zionists, a place for lefties where groupthink wasn't mandated. Right-wing trolls wrecked the place and drove away some of the best writers. There are still some people there who keep track of Islamists in England without themselves turning into right-wing reactionaries, but it's just no fun any longer.
