Websites that you haven't been to in years

DListed. I used to go to that site everyday. I was surprised that it's still around. What about you?

by Anonymousreply 88February 19, 2020 3:20 AM

BoingBoing. It's all clickbait now. Or else they're trying to sell you cheap shit in their "store".

by Anonymousreply 16February 16, 2020 3:51 PM

Just Jared, became too kiss ass. E online is just a reality star page now. Entertainment Weekly is horrible now too and the mag. Used to be a lot more objective years ago. Another one that's become like people magazine.

by Anonymousreply 17February 16, 2020 3:51 PM

Dlisted and Perez . I don’t go to TMZ anymore either as it only seems to be about rappers and athletes.

by Anonymousreply 18February 16, 2020 3:53 PM

All those celebrity news blogs used to be clever. Then everything changed around the time the Real Housewives franchise took off. Celebrity news now revolves around all those "unscripted" reality shows.

by Anonymousreply 19February 16, 2020 3:53 PM

I used to go to Tom and Lorenzo a lot, but now I rarely visit their site. I do listen to their podcast, but they've cleaned up a lot of their original snark since going mainstream.

r21, me too. I check in to gawk at the Metafilter trainwreck every now and then. It's really sad what it's become. I get the feeling that the owner (Cortex) is holding out for a high-paying tech gig that never comes. He was always the weakest link of the original three leaders/whatever you want to call them. I think Metafilter will one day shutter with no warning and that will be the end of it.

by Anonymousreply 29February 16, 2020 4:12 PM

"Dlisted Soap Opera Central"

Soap Opera central! Ha! I forgot about the soap blogs. I used to get drunk and post things I knew would piss off the mid-western housewives. Like please fire Greenlee and Ryan (AMC) they're are stinking up the show and Vicki (OLTL) is a hambone. How does she keep winning Emmys? . It was all true though.

by Anonymousreply 30February 16, 2020 4:18 PM

Queerty. Stopped going there in 2015, don't miss it.

by Anonymousreply 31February 16, 2020 4:18 PM

Sites like MetaFilter are really vulnerable because moderators have so much power. A heavy-handed mod or a mod with an ideological axe to grind can effectively wreck a forum, turning it into an echo chamber. This is why so many of the forums on Reddit are unreadable circle jerks— dissension is banned.

by Anonymousreply 32February 16, 2020 4:27 PM

Perez Hilton, Myspace, HotorNot, Gay.com, Consumerist, Tumblr since they banned porn.

by Anonymousreply 33February 16, 2020 4:31 PM

R26 That casual racism you displayed. "To black now" so I guess everything is supposed to be blindingly white to your liking then?

Towleroad, insufferable.

by Anonymousreply 35February 16, 2020 4:42 PM

Dlisted. God that would crack me up. It also was how I started watching Drag Race. It influenced that show so much.

Buzzfeed. Back before it was full SJW and there were fun quizzes to kill time.

Survivorsucks. So irreverent and fun like DL, but reddit traffic has killed so many message boards (and tapa talk SUCKS).

Dailykos. L-O-fucking-L

Most sites turning into a vote-karma based system have really killed what made the net fun. Old style message boards meant you actually had to read through what others said. It’s why I like DL. We mock the Chicoms and their social credit score, but look what things like Reddit do to us and discourse. Blah.

by Anonymousreply 44February 16, 2020 7:29 PM

Another vote for dlisted. I will add slate and av club as well as most entertainment and culture blogs. Some time around the late 2000s I noticed that sites like av club, slate, etc started to write with an identical voice complete with identical opinions. It was like they had become monolithic , with the exact same thoughts on everything from current controversies to reviews of movies and TV shows. I also stopped reading Gawker long before it was shut down. I got tired of their sanctimonious finger wagging. They were a sleazy gossip site but towards the end all the columnists seemed to be on a soap box 24/7.

by Anonymousreply 45February 16, 2020 7:43 PM

Celebitchy ❤️ my beginning in online opinion-giving. It makes me laugh when I go there now (extremely rare) it’s so frau-ish, and I’m a masculine butch-Kween.

by Anonymousreply 46February 16, 2020 7:46 PM

R32 A big problem with reddit is you don't really get to see an accurate assortment of opinions. The comments you see first are the most popular, while anyone with a different view is completely buried underneath 700 other circle jerky comments. Here, you see comments in the order that they are written. Whether they have 50 ww or zero doesn't make a difference.

by Anonymousreply 47February 16, 2020 7:47 PM

by Anonymousreply 59February 16, 2020 9:40 PM

Dlisted for sure.

I still love Michael K and don't think the quality fell or anything, but there's only so much that can be done before it repeats itself. Also, he has too many other writers there now.

Go Fug Yourself was the same. Love them, love their wittiness but after a while it's all been done.

by Anonymousreply 60February 16, 2020 10:03 PM

JoeMyGod is fine, but it's pretty much all news now and not a lot of LGBT specific cultural stuff. It's just overwhelming to read sad/bad news after a while.

To those listing regretsy, afterelton, etc......those sites don't exist anymore so that may be why you haven't visited!!

Yeah ... AfterElton started to go downhill after turning into TheBacklot, which then became totally insufferable after Logo bought it and turned it into NewNowNext. .. Does anyone go there? I just looked in on NNN, and it seems to have changed somewhat. .. To my amazement a few of the features actually looked somewhat interesting.

by Anonymousreply 65February 16, 2020 10:19 PM

Queerty and Towleroad, since they're aggressively pro-T. I wish there were a site by, about, and for gay men only.

by Anonymousreply 67February 16, 2020 11:05 PM

We used to have salons which, in a way, could have been the predecessors to the “chat rooms” and “message boards” you have today. Such dear memories.

by Anonymousreply 68February 16, 2020 11:12 PM

IMDb forums were overrun by trolls and troublemakers but if you looked deeper there were fantastic discussions about vintage, foreign, or relatively obscure films-- sometimes cast and crew members would chime in. For the most part posters on these forums behaved themselves because they all shared a genuine love for movies. I haven't found a viable alternative for in-depth conversations about older films. Yes, there's Reddit, but Reddit's format doesn't lend itself to this sort of discussion, unfortunately. Also the majority of Redditors appear to have a mental age of 12.

by Anonymousreply 69February 17, 2020 2:47 AM

by Anonymousreply 71February 17, 2020 12:48 PM

by Anonymousreply 72February 17, 2020 12:49 PM

yep, only DL stays fun and wild as fuk !!!!! LIVE LONG AND PROSPER

by Anonymousreply 73February 17, 2020 1:04 PM

Anyone heard of SodaHead? Many years ago, it was my introduction to blogs where you could post and discuss almost any topic. Realized there were too many ignorant teens and judgmental conservative types, so I left. It's gone now, but who cares?

Ten years ago, Celebitchy used to have funny snarky comments and articulate posters. Gradually it became infested with pedantic fraus and became an echo chamber. Kaiser, the main blogger/moderator who tried to copy Michael K's writing style, removes any comments that don't agree with her narrative. The snarky commenters left. It's heavily moderated because Kaiser is a controlling bitch.

I don't visit dlisted as often as I used to. Too cliquish. The "veteran" posters gang up on the newer ones. The celeb stanning for Jennifer Aniston and the venom for Angelina Jolie is ridiculous. Celebitchy is the reverse: they hate Aniston and revere Jolie. Very little middle ground.

Tom and Lorenzo got full of themselves. If you strongly disagree with their opinions, they respond in such a snooty tone. And the regulars are sycophantic toward them. Plus, how long can one talk about fashion? It gets boring very quickly.

HuffPo and Towleroad are shadows of their former selves.

That's enough complaining for now. Don't ever change, DL.

by Anonymousreply 74February 18, 2020 6:32 AM

Dlisted was fucking hilarious. I stopped in 2009. Queerty, Craigslist, and LPSG. lpsg bans everybody for the smallest shit, even people who contribute a lot of content on their site. They'll especially ban you if you mention anything hinting at Trans. I said a guy's chest looked trans once and they called me transphobic and banned me. Fucking crazy.

by Anonymousreply 75February 18, 2020 6:44 AM

JoeMyGod I felt like I needed a shower after visiting that site. All Angry Queens All the Time. TMZ - turned ghetto PinkNews - Trannyfest HuffPost - lol

by Anonymousreply 76February 18, 2020 6:52 AM

Atkol.com message boards. When I was 12, 13 yoa or so and started to sneak and obsess over gay porn - this was the place to talk porn. A lot of the porn stars actually posted there as well. At some point, I guess the store changed hands and everything just went dead.

I used to enjoy tmz. The they started doing things like: Do you know who this is? And the answer would be some obscure no-name that must’ve sucked them off to get on their page.

by Anonymousreply 79February 18, 2020 7:41 AM

I liked all of the above-mentioned celebrity gossip sites when they snarked on actual celebrities like Paltrow, Cruise, Jake G. etc. Then they started with the reality show personalities and D-listers and other people I couldn't give two fucks about so I stopped reading them.

by Anonymousreply 80February 18, 2020 7:49 AM

There was a moment there when I thought the owner of Towelroad could have sold up for a goodling amount. However the site then became obsessed with gay marriage to the point where - if you didn't really care about it - there was no point in visiting. A few years down the track it now resembles a generic junk news site. What a lost opportunity.

by Anonymousreply 81February 18, 2020 7:56 AM

Dlisted went south when michael K decided to have unfunny guest bloggers. They were awful!!

by Anonymousreply 82February 18, 2020 8:52 AM

Was an avid reader of MetalSludge in the ‘00s.

They haven’t actually changed that much and have valiantly held on to their style and format. It’s not them, it’s me. I’m just not into it anymore.

R51 City data had become cunt central. Like the bitchiest of data lounge without any humor and wit. I've seen people ask completely innocuous questions about a city and have a dozen commenters bitching at them.

by Anonymousreply 84February 18, 2020 5:32 PM

R74, I recall SodaHead. It had a strange format.

by Anonymousreply 85February 18, 2020 7:55 PM

Harry's Place, Hurryupharry.org - I visited every day to discuss politics. It was a spot where people who support labor/labour but aren't doctrinaire on all left-wing issues could discuss Middle East politics, irrational left-wing support for anti-western Islamists, could write something complimentary about Israel without being slammed as Zionists, a place for lefties where groupthink wasn't mandated. Right-wing trolls wrecked the place and drove away some of the best writers. There are still some people there who keep track of Islamists in England without themselves turning into right-wing reactionaries, but it's just no fun any longer.
