by Anonymousreply 10February 16, 2020 4:18 AM

Sis and iconic.

by Anonymousreply 11February 16, 2020 4:18 AM

Well, it sucks, R9. Or the people who use it do.

by Anonymousreply 12February 16, 2020 4:19 AM

They've recently started to R11.

by Anonymousreply 13February 16, 2020 4:19 AM

Cisgender - this means I have an actual gender, not a figment of my imagination.

by Anonymousreply 26February 16, 2020 4:31 AM

by Anonymousreply 28February 16, 2020 4:32 AM

They were saying "bougie" on Good Times and The Jeffersons. It has long been a black slang word.

by Anonymousreply 29February 16, 2020 4:40 AM

Some words need to stay in the hood.

by Anonymousreply 30February 16, 2020 4:42 AM

R29 not really

by Anonymousreply 31February 16, 2020 4:44 AM

Bourgeoisie means a social class of people who own the means of production, making them in the upper or merchant class.

You really think ghetto hoodrats can even read this definition?

by Anonymousreply 32February 16, 2020 4:47 AM

R29 I've never heard bougie used on The Jeffersons, which was my favorite show, or Good Times.

by Anonymousreply 33February 16, 2020 5:01 AM

R33 is right.

by Anonymousreply 34February 16, 2020 5:02 AM

"Bougie" has been around for nearly 30 years, if not longer. Roseanne and Tom Arnold used it on one of their insufferable appearances on Arsenio. It wouldn't surprise me one bit to hear it used on The Jeffersons, because it would explain why Roseanne used it; she thought it would give her cred with "the blacks" who watched Arsenio.

Alright since you won't believe me, maybe you will believe Webster's. They take it back to 1732, but in it's current meaning 1966/68.

by Anonymousreply 38February 16, 2020 5:08 AM

R35 Roseanne didn't start using it because of "the blacks" and you're wrong

by Anonymousreply 39February 16, 2020 5:08 AM

Shareeka and Tyrone were overheard using it in 1732 in line to purchase Poisson at the charcuterie.

by Anonymousreply 40February 16, 2020 5:11 AM

"Bougie" was used in a 1991 episode of Fresh Prince, so it was definitely well known enough by then to be dialogue in a sitcom. Sitcoms aren't known for using words that will be difficult for the audience to recognize or understand.

by Anonymousreply 41February 16, 2020 5:11 AM

by Anonymousreply 42February 16, 2020 5:14 AM
Roseanne didn't start using it because of "the blacks" and you're wrong

Learn to read, fuckwit. I didn't say there was empirical proof that she had, I said it wouldn't surprise me if she had done so. "Bougie" started out as black American slang, and when an insufferable white lady like Roseanne -- who at the time was trying really hard to be seen as a liberal trailblazer -- went on what she perceived was a "black show" and started using black American slang, there was a reason for it, and the reason in these cases is NEVER a good one.

by Anonymousreply 43February 16, 2020 5:15 AM

They NEVER said "bougie" on the Jeffersons or Good Times.

by Anonymousreply 44February 16, 2020 5:16 AM

No, they did not.

by Anonymousreply 45February 16, 2020 5:16 AM

R43 Sure, Jan

by Anonymousreply 46February 16, 2020 5:17 AM

Iconic” isn’t slang. It is an actual word.

One may use they/their/them, when speaking of one person, yet wanting to keep their gender unidentifiable, for whatever reasons.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 47February 16, 2020 5:18 AM

Blacks using a term doesn't mean they started it. Sorry to upset you black slang scholar.

by Anonymousreply 48February 16, 2020 5:19 AM

What does bougie mean? I’ve heard it used as both very expensive and very cheap.

by Anonymousreply 49February 16, 2020 5:19 AM

Off topic, but it is amazing how ingratiated and legendary Eminem has become being a nerdy white kid from suburban middle America.

by Anonymousreply 50February 16, 2020 5:20 AM

Willona said bougie in at least one episode and Florence said it on the Jeffersons multiple times. I have the boxsets of both shows. But you guys know everything, so believe what you fucking want.

by Anonymousreply 51February 16, 2020 5:21 AM

OK Boomer

by Anonymousreply 52February 16, 2020 5:24 AM

by Anonymousreply 53February 16, 2020 5:24 AM

At least Madonna pronounced it correctly in "Music"

by Anonymousreply 54February 16, 2020 5:26 AM

by Anonymousreply 55February 16, 2020 5:28 AM

R55 back up what you say bitch

by Anonymousreply 56February 16, 2020 5:31 AM

by Anonymousreply 57February 16, 2020 5:32 AM

Hear that, R55? R56 is calling. You. Out.

by Anonymousreply 58February 16, 2020 5:33 AM

R58 you tell him, homegurl!

by Anonymousreply 59February 16, 2020 5:34 AM

Bougie means pretentious, full of himself; a person who is not nearly as sophisticated as she thinks she is.

I like using woke to show contempt, with a sneer.

by Anonymousreply 60February 16, 2020 5:40 AM

The irony is that "bourgois" originally meant "middle class" and was a put down by upper classes meaning someone was tacky, etc. and therefore middle class, not upper class.

Then blacks starting using it to mean "uppity" or like someone from the 'hood who either got money or tries to act like they got money buy wearing fancy cothes, nice cars etc. acting "all bougie". The opposite i.e. acting like a higher class than he/she is.

by Anonymousreply 61February 16, 2020 5:44 AM

Woke is cringeworthy to hear and read, but will sadly be around forever

by Anonymousreply 62February 16, 2020 5:45 AM

No, it won't, R62. In fact, I think it will have a very short shelf life.

by Anonymousreply 63February 16, 2020 5:47 AM

Bae

by Anonymousreply 64February 16, 2020 5:53 AM

by Anonymousreply 65February 16, 2020 5:56 AM

The Jeffersons were an example of bourgeois - "New Money" - which is why they wouldn't be referring to others that way.

by Anonymousreply 66February 16, 2020 6:16 AM

agency--as in, "They have agency..."

by Anonymousreply 67February 16, 2020 6:19 AM

by Anonymousreply 68February 16, 2020 6:31 AM

That's been around since the first Queen Elizabeth, R68.

The problem seems to be not the words themselves but the appropriators of the words.

by Anonymousreply 69February 16, 2020 6:34 AM

People here see also don't seem to know the difference between slang and actual words.

by Anonymousreply 70February 16, 2020 6:36 AM

I agree on "bae" – the worst. Bæ in Danish is an actual word that means poop.

From baby to babe to bae. Are people that lazy? What's next, "ba"?

by Anonymousreply 71February 16, 2020 6:38 AM

Canceled

Lily Aldridge posted a video on youtube recently about the times she was fired from modeling jobs, but she says she "was canceled" the whole time and never says the word fired.

We have a variation of this thread every few months.

Do people still say "bae"? Because the answer is bae.

by Anonymousreply 74February 16, 2020 7:14 AM

Sick, when misused to mean something is extremely good or interesting. "That outfit is SICK"

Rock, when misused to describe the fact that someone did something insignificant in a way the speaker thinks is somehow a high accomplishment. "She ROCKED those jeans!"

Shut down, when misused to mean to silence someone. "She SHUT DOWN that internet troll with one tweet!"

by Anonymousreply 75February 16, 2020 7:17 AM

Ugly words that are complimentary:

That wig is "snatched".

Gurl, your face is so "beat".

by Anonymousreply 76February 16, 2020 7:50 AM

R73 - how about "I am SHOOK!" which is used by folks who describe themselves as "slayed"?

by Anonymousreply 77February 16, 2020 7:53 AM
Bougie means pretentious, full of himself; a person who is not nearly as sophisticated as she thinks she is.

I thought bougie means expensive. So a person who says she bought bougie clothes is putting herself down?

by Anonymousreply 78February 16, 2020 10:57 AM

"Is so 'extra' about" -- Retarded

"Blah blah 'is goals'" -- Take a fucking english class.

"Bro, did you see that, bro? Bro, that girl that I haven't seen before... 'that's my wife', bro." -- Don't breed.
They take it back to 1732, but in it's current meaning 1966/68.

While you’ve got that dictionary open, look up the difference between its and it’s.

by Anonymousreply 82February 16, 2020 12:21 PM

Fuck you, R82. Every time I type "were" it gets auto-corrected to "we're." Every time I type "its" it auto-corrects to "it's." Stop with the stupid, pointless, empty, vacuous "Oh, dear!" The problem is one that Silicon Valley has created. It is compounded by Muriel's cheap lazy ass that daily takes in money and then does too little to maintain the site. And you. You are part of the problem.

But people who come here to catch a breath of the dank, bitter, air at Data Lounge and are sabotaged by all of the above are inappropriate targets of your witless faux-admonishments. Go back to 6th grade where you belong.

by Anonymousreply 83February 16, 2020 12:51 PM

Turn off your autocorrect, r83. I don't use it on any of my devices.

by Anonymousreply 84February 16, 2020 12:55 PM

Cis. I loathe that absurd term. If ever we needed a primary example of "wokeness" run amok, it's the appearance of this word.

by Anonymousreply 85February 16, 2020 1:04 PM

'Bourgie Bourgie' was a disco hit for Gladys Knight and the Pips in 1980, and it was written by Ashford & Simpson a few years earlier.

by Anonymousreply 86February 16, 2020 1:05 PM

Cis and woke are two of the worst to come out in the last couple of years. I cringe when I hear either of these unfortunate terms.

by Anonymousreply 87February 16, 2020 1:20 PM

R79 “Bruh” is even worse.

by Anonymousreply 88February 16, 2020 1:21 PM

Every thread is a new opportunity for miserable elderly white gays (who failed at life) to announce their self perceived white superiority. They’ve failed at everything else. White skin is their only achievement. Which of course is not an achievement at all. Sad and pathetic 😞

by Anonymousreply 121February 16, 2020 7:18 PM

All slang terms need to be abandoned. Their only purpose is to divide and weaken society as a whole. We're divided enough, we don't need senseless jibber-jabber to accelerate this negative process. It's just one of many evil practices that keep the working class to continuously into groups hating one another. The results are, imbeciles like Trump continue to get elected.

The Oh Dearing of what are obviously autocorrect typos is very stupid, yes, and usually done by overexcitable types trying to fit in and feel superior.

On the other hand, you need to turn off autocorrect. It doesn't fix everything -- autocomplete can't be turned off on my keyboard and it'll give me some errors every once in a while -- but it will vastly improve your typo ratio.

by Anonymousreply 137February 17, 2020 12:45 PM

There's a DJ on local radio who has what she thinks is a cool 13 year old son. So she uses terms he uses like "ridonkulous" and a couple of others.

13 year old boys are NOT cool, no matter what mommy thinks.

by Anonymousreply 138February 17, 2020 12:45 PM

R138 Does your radio magically broadcast old signals from 1993? Nobody says "ridonkulous" anymore, especially not 13 year olds.

by Anonymousreply 139February 17, 2020 1:00 PM

No. It's someone on broadcast radio nowadays.

"Rock" used in similar context to what R152 said.

Rock is a piece of stone. It's not a verb.

by Anonymousreply 153February 17, 2020 10:44 PM

"Hob" instead of "stovetop". All Britishisms needs to be eradicated.

"Gayling."

It's hideous. Just hideous!

It was a quasi-cute thought once upon a time when it was new, but it's over-stayed its welcome.

by Anonymousreply 164February 18, 2020 12:11 PM

People who use the word "cringey" deserve to die.

Yeesh, has Datalounge always been full of virulent racists? I just started posting again after not being here for about 5 years, and I don't remember seeing this many angry Stormfront-esque posts.

by Anonymousreply 170February 18, 2020 1:45 PM

It's election season R170. It's gonna be like this through November 3.

by Anonymousreply 171February 18, 2020 1:48 PM

"Fatty," as used in the Alex Wolff/Asa Butterfield thread:
Sorry, can't get over Asa's fatty.

I think the typist is typing about Alex's ass. I've never heard of "fatty" being used to mean "ass" before.

by Anonymousreply 172February 18, 2020 1:58 PM
R159 - Joel seems like such a GAY BOY.

Yeah but he's cute and has personality. I like both him and Lia. I've read on other threads that he doesn't talk about his own sexuality but mentions that one of his brothers is gay.

Karen(s)

SJW

and too many more to mention

by Anonymousreply 174February 18, 2020 2:43 PM

That use of the clapping emoji in SJW things.

by Anonymousreply 175February 18, 2020 2:45 PM

"Hey" instead of "Hi"

Young retail staff and restaurant workers saying "Have a good one." instead of "Bye."

by Anonymousreply 176February 18, 2020 3:07 PM

I've always said "hey."

Hate "have a nice one" or "have a good one." Have a good [italic]what[/italic]? But that's been with us so long, I associate it with Gen X and the "no problem" generation.

by Anonymousreply 177February 18, 2020 3:21 PM

I agree with you, R15. "Woke" definitely needs to go.

by Anonymousreply 178February 18, 2020 3:30 PM

I want to stab the woman who started, "On Fleek". I HATE that expresson.

Also YAAAAS or YASSSS QWEEEN.

by Anonymousreply 179February 18, 2020 3:49 PM

R177, I use George Carlin’s line for that:

“I already have a good one. I’m looking for a longer one.”

by Anonymousreply 180February 18, 2020 4:35 PM

"… is goals"

"because the internet"

"ok boomer"

by Anonymousreply 181February 18, 2020 4:37 PM

Queef.

The word makes me gag.

by Anonymousreply 182February 18, 2020 4:49 PM

Can we please get rid of "tea" as in "spilling the...". It's ridiculous to read it in headlines such as "Celebrity X spills the tea on her latest romance", etc.

by Anonymousreply 183February 18, 2020 5:31 PM

"Diss." It's old already but people still use it.

by Anonymousreply 184February 18, 2020 6:04 PM

‘Hey’ as a substitute for ‘hi’ is a long-standing Southernism that like ‘y’all’ has been ruined by online illiterati

by Anonymousreply 185February 20, 2020 2:31 PM

Yeet, whatever that means.

Not slang as much as tired, overused phrases - "That's it. That's the tweet." "I don't know who needs to hear this, but..."

by Anonymousreply 186February 20, 2020 2:37 PM

Hunty

by Anonymousreply 187February 20, 2020 2:45 PM

Receipts. As in "show me proof." If this hasn't already been said.

by Anonymousreply 188February 20, 2020 3:43 PM

Younger people refer to body hair on a guy as "fur". Seriously annoying to me.

by Anonymousreply 189February 20, 2020 8:10 PM

"I’m looking at you..." I hate this stupid fucking phrase. It might have been slightly amusing the first time someone used it 10 years ago, but it’s gotten to the point where lazy writers use it constantly, and it’s sounds so stoooopid.

by Anonymousreply 190February 20, 2020 8:16 PM

Spelling "stupid" "s-t-o-o-o-o-p-i-d." It's stupid.

by Anonymousreply 191February 20, 2020 8:23 PM

No one uses "bougie" other than gay black men and young black activist types (both male and female, straight and queer)--they have used it since i was a child, and I am in my early 50s. I have never heard a non-black person (except for college students trying to be hip) use it.

"Hunty" is very out-of-date, and was drag slang when it was in fashion.

Most Americans of all ages now say "hey" in greeting rather than "hi."

by Anonymousreply 192February 20, 2020 9:01 PM

Not slang, but this seems like the most appropriate thread to complain about it. I hate the way news people keep saying Dems attacked e-chother instead of each other. Is it so hard to enunciate?

by Anonymousreply 193February 20, 2020 9:05 PM
Most Americans of all ages now say "hey" in greeting rather than "hi."

That just means most Americans are wrong. Wouldn't be the first time. "Hey" sounds vaguely rude.

I like to listen to Nick Digilio on WGN radio in Chicago. He always says "Hi" to his callers and they answer back in kind. A man after my own heart.

by Anonymousreply 194February 20, 2020 9:13 PM

Regarding the Hey/Hi debate.

I had a coworker who would respond, “Hey? Hey? Hay is for horses. Save it in case you marry a jackass.”

by Anonymousreply 195February 20, 2020 9:17 PM

Lol, R195. Awesome.

I first noticed people saying "Hey" on the TV show "Friends". I wonder if they started the trend or if they were just reflecting what was already happening among young people.

by Anonymousreply 196February 20, 2020 9:22 PM
I had a coworker who would respond, “Hey? Hey? Hay is for horses.

Is she Carol Burnett pretending to be Bette Davis? (see 5:05-5:15)

Does that make you Vicki Lawrence or Lyle Waggoner?
