Olivia Colman is kind of gross

The Queen must be so mad that she used to be played by Claire Foy and now the homely Ms. Colman.

by Anonymousreply 92October 12, 2020 2:20 AM

I was used to her by the end of the season, but her RBF annoyed me for half the season.

by Anonymousreply 1February 15, 2020 2:19 AM

I agree OP.

by Anonymousreply 2February 15, 2020 2:19 AM

Olivia had a good year playing queens. It won't happen again.

by Anonymousreply 3February 15, 2020 2:21 AM

She rules

by Anonymousreply 4February 15, 2020 2:23 AM

The cast change gimmick was a big mistake. Helena Bonham Carter was delicious dirty fun, but they could have just used her scenes as a Liz Taylor bio flick.

by Anonymousreply 5February 15, 2020 2:25 AM

what is RBF r2?

by Anonymousreply 6February 15, 2020 2:30 AM

I like her a lot.

I struggled a bit with her taking over QEII. But The Crown made the same mistake that Me And My Shadows did. They should have made a switch a wee bit later.

Aberfan would have been a better place to start.

But in any case, Olivia plays the weariness of the role better than Foy's crisp newness....which I loved, but which I agree wouldn't have necessarily gone well as the Queen gets older.

by Anonymousreply 7February 15, 2020 2:33 AM

Her Majesty is no beauty queen.

She should be glad someone with actual humor and life is playing that cold trout.

by Anonymousreply 8February 15, 2020 2:34 AM

Bitch stole my dear friend's Oscar.

by Anonymousreply 9February 15, 2020 2:35 AM

Why are we supposed to hate Olivia Coleman? I missed the memo.

by Anonymousreply 10February 15, 2020 2:35 AM

Who's Olivia Coleman?

Is she any relation to Olivia Colman?

by Anonymousreply 11February 15, 2020 2:41 AM

Olivia Colman is amazing. I LOVE her.

by Anonymousreply 12February 15, 2020 2:43 AM

I know a lot of people who love The Crown. Not a single person likes Colman's portrayal of her nibs. She's reminiscent of Carol Burnett as Queen Elizabeth. All those tics and exaggerated facial movements and the hilariously overdone speech patterns. It's a terrible performance. Like Streep as Eleanor Roosevelt, it takes you right out of the story.

by Anonymousreply 13February 15, 2020 2:50 AM

I love her too. Unless she's filmed kicking puppies, I will always adore her.

by Anonymousreply 14February 15, 2020 2:55 AM

Olivia Colman is fucking funny.

And she can also play drama well.

by Anonymousreply 15February 15, 2020 2:56 AM

Olivia Colman was in Beautiful People as the mother of a gay son.

by Anonymousreply 16February 15, 2020 2:59 AM

R10 Because she stole Glenn's long overdue Oscar with a one-dimensional performance (not her fault--it was the writing and she should have been Supporting with Stone in Leading).

by Anonymousreply 17February 15, 2020 3:01 AM

Say what you will, but half way through "The Favourite" I said, she's going to win Supporting Actress. I was damn close.

by Anonymousreply 18February 15, 2020 3:04 AM

gary coleman is worse

by Anonymousreply 19February 15, 2020 3:07 AM

By now, Gary Coleman is considerably grosser

by Anonymousreply 20February 15, 2020 3:11 AM

Oh, Glenn.

Maybe if you spent your time working on your performances instead of trolling the DL, you might have an Oscar.

by Anonymousreply 21February 15, 2020 3:12 AM

Claire Foy was too attractive to play The Queen, that's the real issue. Elizabeth is a lovely person and she's smart and capable and interesting, but she isn't a movie star. She looks like a human, not like a model. Coleman fits her because she looks like an actual person, as does Liz. Claire is great but she looks like a porcelain doll.

by Anonymousreply 22February 15, 2020 3:13 AM

I don't buy Colman's sweetness. Her oh-shucks-I'm-just-a-clumsy-and-silly-British-working-actress! schtick is so tiring. And she seems to be playing the same character in every role she plays, although do I admit I haven't seen her in many productions.

by Anonymousreply 23February 15, 2020 3:20 AM

^Then shut the fuck up and go stream the other things she's done for the BBC. She has great range and is very prolific. Watch Flowers on Netflix.

by Anonymousreply 24February 15, 2020 3:24 AM

She is not pageant material.

by Anonymousreply 25February 15, 2020 3:28 AM

Claire Foy is pretty, lovely in fact. That doesn't change the fact that Colman looks 25 years too old to be playing QE at 37 years old. She's pitched her performance all wrong as well. I wonder is she is anti monarchist because it seems a bit of mockery? Also, she's like Streep in that she doesn't relate well to the other performers. Her odd precisions place a bit of a glass box around her performance. I made it to Aberfan and no further. Colman's facial isolations turn me the fuck off. She really isn't good in this. Very fine actors can fail you know. Like Lange did in Feud....

by Anonymousreply 26February 15, 2020 3:36 AM

*I wonder if she is...

by Anonymousreply 27February 15, 2020 3:43 AM

[quote]^Then shut the fuck up and go stream the other things she's done for the BBC. She has great range and is very prolific. Watch Flowers on Netflix.

No I won't because I don't want to see her.

by Anonymousreply 28February 15, 2020 4:22 AM

I kind of found her repulsive in The Favorite

by Anonymousreply 29February 15, 2020 5:00 AM

[quote]R6 what is RBF

The Royal Butt Fuckers.

by Anonymousreply 30February 15, 2020 5:13 AM

Fuck off, Matt at r26. Jessica Lange was brilliant in Feud, far better than the camp clowning that Faye Dunaway did.

by Anonymousreply 31February 15, 2020 5:22 AM

When Matt writes with as much insight and style as I do, I'll alert the fool @ r31. Have your psychotic break somewhere else Lange Loon.

by Anonymousreply 32February 15, 2020 5:40 AM

I didn't like her in The Crown, I confess: all they gave her to do was grimly absorb yet more bad news in large rooms. But I love Olivia Colman. I love lo look at her face--those huge, expressive brown eyes. They say she'll be nominated for another Oscar for the movie she's done with Anthony Hopkins, "The Father."

by Anonymousreply 33February 15, 2020 5:41 AM

[quote]R31 Jessica Lange was brilliant in Feud, far better than the camp clowning that Faye Dunaway did.

Now JUST ONE MINUTE, young lady...!

by Anonymousreply 34February 15, 2020 5:47 AM

Yes she is gross. Claire Foy was much more engaging to watch. The cast change soured me on the whole series.

by Anonymousreply 35February 15, 2020 6:26 AM

By halfway through season 3 I'd got used to Colman, although I still think she plays HMTQ as too sweet and warm.

However Helena Bonham-Carter and whoever plays Phillip are completely off to the point of being distracting.

by Anonymousreply 36February 15, 2020 7:27 AM

Could she play her less old and ugly and bug eyed?

by Anonymousreply 37February 15, 2020 7:31 AM

Best thread evah!!!!!!

by Anonymousreply 38February 15, 2020 8:03 AM

Just saw The favorites in a flight and surprised she was the only one nominated in the Best Actress. the 3 leads should have been BA nominees and i don’t even think she even the best among the 3. her win should have an *.

by Anonymousreply 39February 15, 2020 8:42 AM

I can't believe Sophie won an Oscar.

by Anonymousreply 40February 15, 2020 9:41 AM

Hasn't there been a huge uptick in viewers since she took over the role? So I guess few people agree with you OP.

by Anonymousreply 41February 15, 2020 9:55 AM

She really knows how to play Numberwang!

by Anonymousreply 42February 15, 2020 10:06 AM

[qoute]Claire Foy was too attractive to play The Queen, that's the real issue. Elizabeth is a lovely person and she's smart and capable and interesting, but she isn't a movie star. She looks like a human, not like a model. Coleman fits her because she looks like an actual person, as does Liz. Claire is great but she looks like a porcelain doll.

I heard a Fresh Air interview with the creator of the series. I was somewhat surprised that he said this, but he said the problem with casting for the Queen was that she was not a pretty woman. "She could be pretty at the right angle and in the right light, but she could be very plain the next minute." The implication was that the other actresses who read for the part were prettier than Foy.

He also said he didn't even bother to listen when Foy auditioned the first two times.

by Anonymousreply 43February 15, 2020 3:29 PM

Love her. But the best of the new cast are Tobias Menzies as Phillip, HBC as Margaret, and the best of the best, Erin Doherty as Princess Anne and Josh O'Connell as Prince Charles.

Rather than not having Claire Foy go on long enough, they let her go on too long. As someone pointed out, her "crisp newness" worked beautifully for the first season. But they should have stopped with her by the end of the 1950s.

by Anonymousreply 44February 15, 2020 7:00 PM

Josh O'Connor, not O'Connell. Sorry.

by Anonymousreply 45February 15, 2020 7:01 PM

[quote]Colman looks 25 years too old to be playing QE at 37 years old

Then it's lucky she didn't do it for long, isn't it? By the time of Aberfan, she's playing Queen Lizzie in her 40s, and by the end of series 3, the Queen is in her 50s.

by Anonymousreply 46February 15, 2020 7:05 PM

Wasn't she Fleabag's creepy stepmother?

by Anonymousreply 47February 15, 2020 7:10 PM

The Crown was boring middlebrow crap. Olivia Colman will always be Sophie from Peep Show to me.

by Anonymousreply 48February 15, 2020 7:12 PM

[quote]Wasn't she Fleabag's creepy stepmother?

Yes.

by Anonymousreply 49February 15, 2020 7:16 PM

After I watched the favourite, I wondered how rachel weisz and queen anne were supposed to be childhood friends and wiki’d queen anne and confirmed that yeah they are supposed to be very close in age, but olivia colman is so damn old and hardlooking, looked like rachel’s mother, somebody miscast somebody. But in real life , rachel weisz is older than olivia colman. Mind blown.

by Anonymousreply 50February 15, 2020 7:22 PM

My first exposure to Colman was in The Night Manager and Broadchurch.

I had no idea she could be funny until more recently.

by Anonymousreply 51February 15, 2020 8:08 PM

"Colman looks 25 years too old to be playing QE at 37 years old." Colman doesn't look 62 years old, R26, you silly twat.

"Also, she's like Streep in that she doesn't relate well to the other performers. Her odd precisions place a bit of a glass box around her performance." Oh fuck off again.

"Very fine actors can fail you know. Like Lange did in Feud...." The stupidest thing R26 said in that entire self-satisfied post. What a prat.

by Anonymousreply 52February 15, 2020 8:13 PM

[quote]My first exposure to Colman was in The Night Manager and Broadchurch

I loved Broadchurch.

by Anonymousreply 53February 15, 2020 8:42 PM

Granny's panties are twisted @ R52. Colman does look 62. Put on your progressives poofter. Jessica Lange STUNK as Joan Crawford. Everybody said so. And she looked 72 playing late forties. Grotesque.

by Anonymousreply 54February 15, 2020 8:48 PM

Who's triggered? The know-it-all Cunt at R54.

"Everybody said so." Do you have proof that EVERYONE did? What a way to support your claim! EVERYONE thinks the way I do! And I'm self-satisfied and proud of it!

Stupid. Twat.

by Anonymousreply 55February 15, 2020 8:51 PM

According to Prat R54, this is what 62 years old looks like.

Olivia Colman, age 46.

by Anonymousreply 62February 15, 2020 9:25 PM

I guess it was just a matter of time that tiresome anti-Olivia Colman trolls crawled out from underneath their rocks.

by Anonymousreply 63February 15, 2020 9:26 PM

She got better in the Crown once she decided to embrace the bitch Elizabeth had become. Her scenes with Josh O'Connor are a real turning point where she really owned it after that.

by Anonymousreply 64February 15, 2020 9:30 PM

but olivia colman is so damn old and hardlooking, looked like rachel’s mother, somebody miscast somebody. But in real life , rachel weisz is older than olivia colman. Mind blown.

The Queen (in real life) was obese and had chronic health problems; that kinds of shit ages you quick! I love Olivia Colman - as someone else noted, I loved her weariness and struggle to connect to the emotions of others, whether it was her son or the people in Wales - and of course her interactions with Phillip & Margaret. Claire Foy is lovely, but as the Queen, she was far less interesting than the people that surrounded her.

by Anonymousreply 65February 15, 2020 9:44 PM

She dresses very badly.

It’s a bizarre affectation.

by Anonymousreply 66February 15, 2020 9:45 PM

Homely women often dress flamboyantly bad R66. Olivia could play Maude or Glenn Close.

by Anonymousreply 67February 15, 2020 9:48 PM

Bitter anti-Olivia troll at R67. Just your garden-variety DL gash.

by Anonymousreply 68February 15, 2020 9:54 PM

[quote]I loved Broadchurch.

I liked the first season.

by Anonymousreply 69February 15, 2020 9:54 PM

Get the ancient fag at R68 defending his favorite ACTRESS by calling a handsome dude a GASH?? Such misogyny from the eldergays here, with a side of racism. That's DL's empty garden. Almost dead.

by Anonymousreply 70February 15, 2020 10:03 PM

KING? Of WHAT, R70? LMFAO!!!!

by Anonymousreply 71February 15, 2020 10:06 PM

R67/R70, you're just a butt-hurt GURRRL whose pussy smells.

by Anonymousreply 72February 15, 2020 10:08 PM

The Favourite was Emma Stone's show. I really don't understand why Colman got all the critical raves.

by Anonymousreply 73February 15, 2020 10:38 PM

That's hardly true, R73. It was all three of them.

by Anonymousreply 74February 15, 2020 10:41 PM

I first saw her on That Mitchell and Webb Look, a british sketch show I loved — she was amazing on that.

Since then it seems shes required to be in literally everything coming out of the UK. She’s in danger of being overexposed.

Haven’t seen her in The Crown yet — I’m not caught up with that. I love Claire Foy in thar and cant imagine anyone else in the part.

by Anonymousreply 75February 15, 2020 10:51 PM

Forgot to mention, she doesn’t have Claire Fly’s sweet little face but I don’t find her unattractive at all.

by Anonymousreply 76February 15, 2020 10:53 PM

Viewership of The Crown is up 40% since Olivia Colman took over.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 77February 15, 2020 11:42 PM

Because Colman is a huge star in the UK.

by Anonymousreply 78February 15, 2020 11:58 PM

But r78, only about 12 million UK households have Netflix. 65 million US households do. So regardless of whether the show uses UK talent and is set (of course) in the UK, you’d think “she’s a huge star in the UK wouldn’t settle the argument.

by Anonymousreply 79February 17, 2020 10:08 PM

Wait until Season 5 and Imelda Staunton takes over as the Queen. You will get an ugly, hysterical Queen.

by Anonymousreply 80February 17, 2020 10:26 PM

I'm tired of her "Who, little ME? I'm so surprised! Now let me be funny." schtick.

by Anonymousreply 81February 17, 2020 10:33 PM

R65, Elizabeth II has never been "obese"!

by Anonymousreply 82February 17, 2020 10:35 PM

That wasn't a reference to Lizzie II, r82, but to Queen Anne, the character that Colman played in "The Favourite".

by Anonymousreply 83February 17, 2020 11:01 PM

Colman is so bad and unattractive and peculiar in the role of Queen Elizabeth - that I never bothered finishing Season 3. I keep wanting to, but she really is a show killer. Far too old looking to be offering such a misguided performance. She fucked the whole show up. The cast changing is an interesting idea and works best for the more inventive and fluid players. But Colman plays Liz as a completely different human being? With way too many strange attractive acting details. Olivia Colman got it wrong. She's like Streep in Mamma Mia. She's 20 years too old and can't sing.

by Anonymousreply 84October 12, 2020 12:31 AM

[quote]The Queen must be so mad that she’s played by the homely Ms. Colman.

Is OP under the impression QEII is some winner in the looks department??

Olivia Colman and Rachel Weisz are only four years apart in age... and Rachel Weisz is actually the elder of the two.

In real life, Queen Anne looked much rougher than Sarah Churchill, the Duchess of Marlborough, because she had to dress in a much more stately fashion, because she was overweight, and because she had terrible and regularly debilitating health problems.

by Anonymousreply 87October 12, 2020 12:47 AM
