The Queen must be so mad that she used to be played by Claire Foy and now the homely Ms. Colman.
Olivia Colman is kind of gross

I was used to her by the end of the season, but her RBF annoyed me for half the season.

I agree OP.

Olivia had a good year playing queens. It won't happen again.

by Anonymous | reply 4 | February 15, 2020 2:23 AM |
The cast change gimmick was a big mistake. Helena Bonham Carter was delicious dirty fun, but they could have just used her scenes as a Liz Taylor bio flick.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | February 15, 2020 2:25 AM |
what is RBF r2?
by Anonymous | reply 6 | February 15, 2020 2:30 AM |
I like her a lot.
I struggled a bit with her taking over QEII. But The Crown made the same mistake that Me And My Shadows did. They should have made a switch a wee bit later.
Aberfan would have been a better place to start.
But in any case, Olivia plays the weariness of the role better than Foy's crisp newness....which I loved, but which I agree wouldn't have necessarily gone well as the Queen gets older.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | February 15, 2020 2:33 AM |
Her Majesty is no beauty queen.
She should be glad someone with actual humor and life is playing that cold trout.

Is she any relation to Olivia Colman?
by Anonymous | reply 11 | February 15, 2020 2:41 AM |
Olivia Colman is amazing. I LOVE her.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | February 15, 2020 2:43 AM |
I know a lot of people who love The Crown. Not a single person likes Colman's portrayal of her nibs. She's reminiscent of Carol Burnett as Queen Elizabeth. All those tics and exaggerated facial movements and the hilariously overdone speech patterns. It's a terrible performance. Like Streep as Eleanor Roosevelt, it takes you right out of the story.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | February 15, 2020 2:50 AM |
I love her too. Unless she's filmed kicking puppies, I will always adore her.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | February 15, 2020 2:55 AM |
Olivia Colman is fucking funny.
And she can also play drama well.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | February 15, 2020 2:56 AM |
Olivia Colman was in Beautiful People as the mother of a gay son.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | February 15, 2020 2:59 AM |
R10 Because she stole Glenn's long overdue Oscar with a one-dimensional performance (not her fault--it was the writing and she should have been Supporting with Stone in Leading).
by Anonymous | reply 17 | February 15, 2020 3:01 AM |
Say what you will, but half way through "The Favourite" I said, she's going to win Supporting Actress. I was damn close.

by Anonymous | reply 20 | February 15, 2020 3:11 AM |

Maybe if you spent your time working on your performances instead of trolling the DL, you might have an Oscar.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | February 15, 2020 3:12 AM |
Claire Foy was too attractive to play The Queen, that's the real issue. Elizabeth is a lovely person and she's smart and capable and interesting, but she isn't a movie star. She looks like a human, not like a model. Coleman fits her because she looks like an actual person, as does Liz. Claire is great but she looks like a porcelain doll.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | February 15, 2020 3:13 AM |
I don't buy Colman's sweetness. Her oh-shucks-I'm-just-a-clumsy-and-silly-British-working-actress! schtick is so tiring. And she seems to be playing the same character in every role she plays, although do I admit I haven't seen her in many productions.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | February 15, 2020 3:20 AM |

She is not pageant material.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | February 15, 2020 3:28 AM |
Claire Foy is pretty, lovely in fact. That doesn't change the fact that Colman looks 25 years too old to be playing QE at 37 years old. She's pitched her performance all wrong as well. I wonder is she is anti monarchist because it seems a bit of mockery? Also, she's like Streep in that she doesn't relate well to the other performers. Her odd precisions place a bit of a glass box around her performance. I made it to Aberfan and no further. Colman's facial isolations turn me the fuck off. She really isn't good in this. Very fine actors can fail you know. Like Lange did in Feud....

I didn't like her in The Crown, I confess: all they gave her to do was grimly absorb yet more bad news in large rooms. But I love Olivia Colman. I love lo look at her face--those huge, expressive brown eyes. They say she'll be nominated for another Oscar for the movie she's done with Anthony Hopkins, "The Father."

By halfway through season 3 I'd got used to Colman, although I still think she plays HMTQ as too sweet and warm.
However Helena Bonham-Carter and whoever plays Phillip are completely off to the point of being distracting.

She looks like a human, not like a model. Coleman fits her because she looks like an actual person, as does Liz. Claire is great but she looks like a porcelain doll.
I heard a Fresh Air interview with the creator of the series. I was somewhat surprised that he said this, but he said the problem with casting for the Queen was that she was not a pretty woman. "She could be pretty at the right angle and in the right light, but she could be very plain the next minute." The implication was that the other actresses who read for the part were prettier than Foy.
He also said he didn't even bother to listen when Foy auditioned the first two times.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | February 15, 2020 3:29 PM |
Love her. But the best of the new cast are Tobias Menzies as Phillip, HBC as Margaret, and the best of the best, Erin Doherty as Princess Anne and Josh O'Connell as Prince Charles.
Rather than not having Claire Foy go on long enough, they let her go on too long. As someone pointed out, her "crisp newness" worked beautifully for the first season. But they should have stopped with her by the end of the 1950s.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | February 15, 2020 7:00 PM |
Josh O'Connor, not O'Connell. Sorry.

Then it's lucky she didn't do it for long, isn't it? By the time of Aberfan, she's playing Queen Lizzie in her 40s, and by the end of series 3, the Queen is in her 50s.

But in real life , rachel weisz is older than olivia colman. Mind blown.

"Colman looks 25 years too old to be playing QE at 37 years old." Colman doesn't look 62 years old, R26, you silly twat.
"Also, she's like Streep in that she doesn't relate well to the other performers. Her odd precisions place a bit of a glass box around her performance." Oh fuck off again.
"Very fine actors can fail you know. Like Lange did in Feud...." The stupidest thing R26 said in that entire self-satisfied post. What a prat.

Olivia Colman, age 46.

She got better in the Crown once she decided to embrace the bitch Elizabeth had become. Her scenes with Josh O'Connor are a real turning point where she really owned it after that.

The Queen (in real life) was obese and had chronic health problems; that kinds of shit ages you quick! I love Olivia Colman - as someone else noted, I loved her weariness and struggle to connect to the emotions of others, whether it was her son or the people in Wales - and of course her interactions with Phillip & Margaret. Claire Foy is lovely, but as the Queen, she was far less interesting than the people that surrounded her.

I first saw her on That Mitchell and Webb Look, a british sketch show I loved — she was amazing on that.
Since then it seems shes required to be in literally everything coming out of the UK. She’s in danger of being overexposed.
Haven’t seen her in The Crown yet — I’m not caught up with that. I love Claire Foy in thar and cant imagine anyone else in the part.
by Anonymous | reply 75 | February 15, 2020 10:51 PM |

Viewership of The Crown is up 40% since Olivia Colman took over.

Because Colman is a huge star in the UK.
by Anonymous | reply 78 | February 15, 2020 11:58 PM |
But r78, only about 12 million UK households have Netflix. 65 million US households do. So regardless of whether the show uses UK talent and is set (of course) in the UK, you’d think “she’s a huge star in the UK wouldn’t settle the argument.

R65, Elizabeth II has never been "obese"!
by Anonymous | reply 82 | February 17, 2020 10:35 PM |
That wasn't a reference to Lizzie II, r82, but to Queen Anne, the character that Colman played in "The Favourite".
by Anonymous | reply 83 | February 17, 2020 11:01 PM |
Colman is so bad and unattractive and peculiar in the role of Queen Elizabeth - that I never bothered finishing Season 3. I keep wanting to, but she really is a show killer. Far too old looking to be offering such a misguided performance. She fucked the whole show up. The cast changing is an interesting idea and works best for the more inventive and fluid players. But Colman plays Liz as a completely different human being? With way too many strange attractive acting details. Olivia Colman got it wrong. She's like Streep in Mamma Mia. She's 20 years too old and can't sing.

Olivia Colman and Rachel Weisz are only four years apart in age... and Rachel Weisz is actually the elder of the two.
In real life, Queen Anne looked much rougher than Sarah Churchill, the Duchess of Marlborough, because she had to dress in a much more stately fashion, because she was overweight, and because she had terrible and regularly debilitating health problems.
