I suppose this is already a wide-spread theory...but is it possible her phobia might have been tied to an experience with abortion?
I am not myself aware of any such episode in her past.

Umm, it's because wire hangers will cause clothes to lose their shape, dummy!

No. Joan and her mother once lived behind the dry cleaners where her mother worked.

I always wondered why she held a child accountable for something like a hanger. Carol Ann probably handled those details — not Christina.

Poor R3.
You do realize that Carol Ann was a FICTIONAL character, don't you? Numbnuts.

Because I perform abortions AND make beautiful clothes look like crap, OP.

I think that wire hangers were representative of Joan growing up poor, and she didn't want to be reminded of them.
That's why there was that long speech where she screamed about buying her expensive clothes, meant to be hung on fancy hangers. However, Christina was "ungrateful," and put them on cheap wire hangers.
Which begs the question: who in the hell bought the damned wire hangers in the first place? If she hated them so much, you would think that her staff would have strict instructions to never buy wire hangers. Evvvverrrrrrrr!!!!
So dumb.

Christina said she thinks it came from Joan growing up poor and living behind a laundry. It didn’t hit her until years later. Joan would beat her in a drunk rage.

I presume the dry cleaners' delivered the cleaned dresses on cheap wire hangers. I've heard that Christina was supposed to throw the wire hangers away and put her dresses on the fancy-ass pink padded hangers, the expensive ones that helped the dresses keep their shape.
So the wire hangers not only reminded Joan of her past in the horrible cheap laundry, they were proof that she had been DISOBEYED!! That a small child had FAILED to DO WHAT SHE WAS TOLD 100% OF THE TIME, EVEN WHEN JOAN WASN'T THERE TO GIVE ORDERS!!! Which is how narcissistic parents interact with their children behind closed doors, believe me I've been there.

I have a big box of hangers left over from a dead relative's stuff. I was thinking of trying to give them away on freecycle, but then I thought maybe I should save them to mail to anti-choice politicians.
What Would Joan Crawford Do?

Many dry cleaners accept used wire hangers for reuse or recycling.

Thanks for the tip, r10

I've actually gotten rid of any wire hangers, the things are cheap and nasty and they rust, and they do bend clothes out of shape.
However, I've done so without raising my voice even once!

I'm sure your 57 cats appreciate that, R12!

Is getting hit by a wire hanger all that bad? It’s not like a belt or a fist.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | February 14, 2020 10:11 AM |
R14 Because of the shape and the fact that it's metal it's essentially like being beaten with a metallic switch. Imagine being hit with a cane encased in aluminum with grooves in it.

Joan also choked her kids.

The siblings' job at the laundry was to re-hang the wire hangers all day long.

Christina was such an ungrateful, snotty little bitch.
She should have shown more respect and not used wire hangers.
