Kevin Costner Stumps For Pete Buttigieg in New Hampshire

I always thought he was a homophobe.

I remember that some years ago a camera at the Oscars caught him with a look of disgust on his face after a winner thanked his male partner.

Times change.

He’s in show business. Half his costars are gay.

by Anonymousreply 1February 11, 2020 1:56 PM

[quote]Times change.

Or maybe your assumption was just plain wrong.

by Anonymousreply 2February 11, 2020 1:58 PM

Here’s an example of Costner’s suspected homophobia from back in 2003:

Another reason NOT to vote for Petey.

by Anonymousreply 4February 11, 2020 2:07 PM

r3 Seventeen years ago... 🥴

by Anonymousreply 5February 11, 2020 2:08 PM

I always thought Costner was a Republican.

by Anonymousreply 6February 11, 2020 2:09 PM

I know I've seen him on those lists of "Hollywood Republicans" so I'm a little surprised. I'm not sure if this is good or bad for Pete...actually, I doubt anyone will be significantly influenced by Kevin Costner of all people in any way.

by Anonymousreply 7February 11, 2020 2:10 PM

OP came with the receipts at R3. Yes, there has been a dramatic shift in attitudes and behavior since marriage equality.

by Anonymousreply 8February 11, 2020 2:11 PM

Dances with Wolves is a stunning film. I’ll always respect him for it. The whole “white savior” critiques of it are racist. The character he plays doesn’t save anyone; he is saved by a people with more respect and connection to the earth.

by Anonymousreply 9February 11, 2020 2:12 PM

NH was googling "Pete Buttigieg Kevin Costner" like crazy earlier today, so we'll see. Yellowstone is a huge hit these days among a certain segment of the population, I hear.

by Anonymousreply 10February 11, 2020 2:14 PM

maybe ole kevin is seeking attention? never ever ever ever forget folks, a celebrity's first thought is attention for themselves and their career and self preservation comes a close second..

by Anonymousreply 11February 11, 2020 2:15 PM

Oh, stop it. Just like Michael J. Fox who campaigned with Pete in NH last week, Kevin is a decent person and his speech was beautiful.

by Anonymousreply 12February 11, 2020 2:17 PM

Costner lived in La Cañada-Flintridge. It’s a small enclave lodged between the outskirts of Glendale and Pasadena, CA. After my parents divorced, my mom stayed in Glendale, and my dad returned to NYC.

Anyhow, I grew up in both. Bi-coastal chick, here.

Long story short, a girl I had known since forever, ended up getting cut off from her parents because she refused to go back to university and finish up, getting her degree. So she moved in with some party girl she barely knew, and got a job as a waitress at an establishment that served alcohol all day & night. The restaurant was frequented by all of the town alcoholics who had either retired, or were doing their day drinking away from the Mrs., or the office.

According to her, Costner was a regular, and would hit on her, specifically asking to sit in her section whenever she popped in. Later on, she got behind the actual bar, as a bartender, and Kevin would plant his butt there for hours.

He was allegedly a great tipper, and she eventually ended up having an affair with him for quite a while.

I never asked her for details about their relationship, because that’s their personal business, and tacky AF to discuss, anyhow. But yeah. She was really into him, and he seemed to treat her very well, and she did end up with a very cute, and well decorated cottage, and a pool. Not sure if that came way of Kevin, but she lived there alone, and La Cañada-Flintridge ain’t cheap, even back then.

You can see his speech here.

In the early 1990s, Costner lent his name along with other stars to the organization "Hollywood Supports." The purpose of the organization was to take a stand against gay discrimination and to support gay partnership rights. This was at a time when gay men were dying in record numbers because there wasn't an effective treatment for AIDS, and gay marriage wouldn't be the law of the land for another 25 years.

The organization was disbanded in 1997, but I was able to find a reference to it in a religious right website that condemned it. Here is some material from the 1997 from the BPNews.com that also condemned the movie, "In and Out."

[quote] On the same day "In & Out' premiered, a report in Daily Variety said Hollywood Supports would close and moves its programs on workplace issues involving homosexuality and AIDS to the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation and AIDS Project Los Angeles, respectively. Hollywood Supports plans to shut down in early 1998, according to the report.

[quote] "We are proud of how quickly and dramatically this industry changed," said the group's co-founders, Home Shopping Network owner Barry Diller and MCA CEO Sid Sheinberg, in a written statement. "We are proud and honored by the role that Hollywood Supports, through our trustees, staff and volunteers and other supporters, has been able to play in these changes."

[quote] Eisner and Joe Roth, chairman of Walt Disney Motion Pictures, serve as Hollywood Supports trustees, along with such directors as Steven Spielberg, Ron Howard and Oliver Stone and such actors as Tom Hanks, Sally Field, Kevin Costner, Goldie Hawn, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Robin Williams.

Pete’s the best candidate we Dems have right now. I am hoping to God he can rally the troops and beat Trump.

Pete’s the one, guys. Happy to see people like Costner getting behind him. We need MORE of HE doing the same, publicly, but we also need people from other sectors. This cannot just be a “Hollywood” thing.

by Anonymousreply 16February 11, 2020 2:32 PM

It won't just be a Hollywood thing; the culinary union in Nevada is waiting to see the results in NH and Rep. Jim Clyburn of South Carolina is waiting to see the results in Nevada before they both endorse. That's how it snowballs...

by Anonymousreply 17February 11, 2020 2:39 PM

No one cares about has-been actors except sissified fan girls. There's serious shit going on and the grown-ups are talking so go sit down with your gossip mag bullshit that nobody cares about.

All you flannel-wearing, bearded, New Hamphire hick queens better get your fat asses to the polls and vote for the future of the free world. And when you step into the booth, remember these three words:

BOOT EDGE EDGE!!! BOOT EDGE EDGE!!! BOOT EDGE EDGE!!!

He has a few young daughters. Given the alternative (trump), gay people are probably looking really, really good to him

by Anonymousreply 19February 11, 2020 2:42 PM

Log Cabin cunt R18 just gag and die. Nobody in the world wants you around. You're toxic.

by Anonymousreply 20February 11, 2020 3:04 PM

R18 clearly missed his meds today.

by Anonymousreply 21February 11, 2020 3:10 PM

Wait, I thought it was common knowledge that Costner has essentially the same world view as Mel Gibson but is just better at keeping his mouth shut. Didn't everybody already know this?

by Anonymousreply 22February 11, 2020 3:13 PM

"a camera at the Oscars caught him with a look of disgust on his face"

Kevin later issued a statement to clarify that this look of disgust was in reaction to a juicy fart ripped by Julia Roberts and NOT a reaction to spoken references to homosexuality.

by Anonymousreply 23February 11, 2020 3:13 PM

trump is in office now. I don't care what costner or basically anyone else, used to do. I really just care about what they are doing now

As long as they are working to get rid of trump. They're fine with me for the next 10 months

by Anonymousreply 24February 11, 2020 3:33 PM

R20 and R21 = Bitter Bernie Bitches.

R20 I'm a left leaning Democrat and I'm intelligent and pragmatic. I didn't even know the irrelevant Log Cabin was still a thing, boomer.

R21 I despise the "take your meds" ad hominem attack. It's so disrespectful to those who are ill that I shall not dignify your rudeness with a further response, cunt.

by Anonymousreply 25February 11, 2020 3:43 PM

I never understood the Costner as a homophobe either. As noted, the link at R3 goes back nearly two decades, is based solely an interpretation of body language during a talk show appearance and seems to be the only "proof" as there are no other incidents ever reported (at least online). Some people point to his movies, especially No Way Out, for having an anti-gay sub-plot but fail to mention that Costner only acted in the film and was not a writer, producer, director, etc. Having family and friends in the movie business, I've never heard any speaking negatively of Costner outside of his cheating.

by Anonymousreply 26February 11, 2020 3:50 PM

Pete is really racking up the Hollywood endorsements. Maybe he can get Beyoncé next. She was such a big help for Hillary.

by Anonymousreply 27February 11, 2020 3:51 PM

He has always been a Dem

by Anonymousreply 28February 11, 2020 3:53 PM

AND AI YAI WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOUUUUUUUUU!

by Anonymousreply 29February 11, 2020 3:56 PM

[R13] I envy your friend. How lucky she was to have an affair with Costner, who still looks very good in his 60s.

by Anonymousreply 30February 11, 2020 4:00 PM

[quote] Wait, I thought it was common knowledge that Costner has essentially the same world view as Mel Gibson

They are the same, exact same world view. That's why Mel is now in South Carolina canvasing for votes for Pete, while his world-view equivalent Kevin Costner is in New Hampshire doing same.

by Anonymousreply 31February 11, 2020 4:22 PM

Pete has been clear about being open to neverTrump Republicans. His entire electability argument hinges on building a broad coalition to take on Trump.

by Anonymousreply 32February 11, 2020 4:26 PM

R18 is fat toxic cunt who wants to divide us. Please drop dead from kidney failure after a massive heart attack soon.

by Anonymousreply 33February 11, 2020 4:58 PM

Here's the thing. People don't really care much that Pete is gay.

by Anonymousreply 34February 11, 2020 5:25 PM

[quote] I didn't even know the irrelevant Log Cabin was still a thing, boomer.

Log Cabin is just another T-enabling sellout organization like all the others. I refuse to even call them Republicans after this:

r34, plenty of people do. But most of them are Republicans who wouldn't vote for him anyway even if he were straight

by Anonymousreply 36February 11, 2020 5:41 PM

[quote] [R20] and [R21] = Bitter Bernie Bitches.

R25, thanks for verifying that you're an idiot. I'm not a Sanders supporter. Your post was just garbage, regardless of your politics.

by Anonymousreply 37February 11, 2020 6:16 PM

On MSNBC this AM, Costner says he's not a complete partisan and sometimes votes for Repugs.

by Anonymousreply 38February 11, 2020 6:31 PM

Had great sexual chemistry with openly gay David Marshall Grant in “American Flyers”.

I have been a big fan of Kevin Costner for over 30 years, and I just never knew about any homophobic views he either held or expressed. It doesn't make me think any less of him now. I believe he is the definitive actor for my generation, and I think Harrison Ford and Michael Douglas, for example, are also-rans in comparison.

by Anonymousreply 40February 11, 2020 7:25 PM

Given that the only homophobic views attributed to Costner here are highly subjective reads of the actor's body language, R40, I think you can continue to appreciate the man in good conscience.

by Anonymousreply 41February 11, 2020 7:31 PM

Idiot homophobes are a quarter of Pete’s base. Makes sense since Mayo Pete is a Republican himself.

by Anonymousreply 42February 11, 2020 7:38 PM

[quote] Idiot homophobes are a quarter of Pete’s base.

Say what?

by Anonymousreply 43February 11, 2020 8:03 PM

Why has the deleted full frontal footage of Costner from that baseball movie never surfaced?

by Anonymousreply 44February 11, 2020 8:07 PM

I’m glad he’s out doing positive things.

He took Bill Paxton’s death in 2017 quite hard. They were close.

[quote] Trump is like the rooster who thinks his crowing made the sun come up

Sex tape of Kevin and Pete to surface? (Chasten filming while directing and encouraging the action.)

by Anonymousreply 47February 14, 2020 10:08 PM

r34, except them bitches in Iowa.

by Anonymousreply 48February 14, 2020 10:16 PM

r42, no he's a Communist. GET IT RIGHT.

by Anonymousreply 49February 14, 2020 10:18 PM

by Anonymousreply 50February 14, 2020 10:55 PM

Costner does swing a full basket every now and then.

by Anonymousreply 51February 15, 2020 12:18 AM

He wears dildos in his pants.
