Check your local library, OP, to see if they subscribe streaming services such as Kanopy and Hoopla for free with your library card. Their selection is quite good.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | February 9, 2020 4:02 PM |
Oh honey, have things gotten that bad? Have you tried the libraries?

This one is a not-so-well-known story of the terrors of showbiz. I think you'll like it, OP.

"Mao's Last Dancer" has beautiful cinematography and an interesting story.

A Royal Scandal (1945): comedy produced by Ernst Lubitsch, directed by Otto Preminger, starring Talullah Bankhead, Charles Coburn, Anne Baxter and gay actor William Eythe.

"Un Rubio" [The Blonde One]: an Argentine film from last year about lust and desire between two co-workers. Beautifully filmed and acted, though the pace is glacial. In Spanish with English subtitles, though the dialogue is so sparse it hardly matters.

There are so many wonderful silent films on YT. Just try one, namely TOL'ABLE DAVID, with Richard Barthelmess. It is wonderfully entertaining and RB is simply wonderful (and hot!).

OP I was 12 when I saw TPOMJB and just didn't get it but vividly remember that as my introduction to Maggie Smith.

E.g. old Sherlock Holmes movies with Basil R.

Dailymotion also has movies, like Curse of the Demon (which is worth watching), that Youtube doesn't have because Dailymotion isn't scrubbed of content as much as Youtube is.

You tasteless bitches need to start watching foreign films more so here's Hour of the Star, the bitersweet 1985 Brazilian masterpiece. DL fave Pauline Kael praised the leading lady's performance to high heaven back then (and she also won the Silver Bear for best actress in Berlin that year).

Just watched "Dark Corner" last night. Stars Lucille Ball, Clifton Webb and Mark Stevens, who I don't think I've ever seen in anything before. He was surprisingly appealing.

You know Prokofiev's Lt. Kije Suite? The movie that he originally wrote that music for is up on YouTube, with English subtitles.

There are a lot of b/w British films from the 40s and 50s on YouTube.

Also try Tubi. A good selection of films that come and go kind of like Netflix.

Personal Services starring Julie Walters. Based on the real life story of Cynthia Paine, infamous English suburban madam. It’s hilarious.

The forgotten drive-in movie "Aloha, Bobby and Rose" is up on Tubi. I was reminded of it when it recently had a run at Quentin Tarantino's revival house. Pretty cool little movie with a great soundtrack by ELO and Elton John. Great if you're nostalgic for 70s-era Sunset Strip.

Do a google video search on OK.ru. Russian version of Facebook (I think) so probably spying on you, but has thousands and thousands of older movies. It's where the classic film brigade has set up shop.

They’re not films, but documentary newsreels, but British Pathe on YouTube has fascinating footage of the twentieth century and earlier. You could get lost in it all day.

Cinderella -- the 1965 TV special with Lesley Ann Warren. Watch it while you can because it's popped up before and they always take it down.
