Sean Hayes to play cisgender woman in film "Lazy Susan"

Oh, dear. His face work has done him no favors.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | February 9, 2020 3:35 PM |
He should have hired Deb.

“woman on the edge with nowhere to go but over, Lazy Susan”
That describes Susan Sarandon’s Thelma and Louise role.

Matthew Broderick and Allison Janey are in it? Weird
by Anonymous | reply 5 | February 9, 2020 4:03 PM |
Why? Nice discrimination against women.. as usual.
It’s like it’s all some kind of weird joke.

R8, his character isn't supposed to be trans
More outrage from the anti-trans Republicans
by Anonymous | reply 14 | February 9, 2020 6:19 PM |
R14, indeed, as a trans advocate you probably find a "cis" man playing a real woman perfectly fine, but a "cis" man (i.e. a male) playing a transwoman (i.e. a male) is probably an outrage to you.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | February 9, 2020 6:22 PM |
R2 that wig really looks like Deb’s real hair. What is he trying to say with that?
by Anonymous | reply 16 | February 9, 2020 6:38 PM |
The trailer actually makes this look pretty funny. I love Jim Rash.

He looks like Alison Janney there.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | February 9, 2020 7:02 PM |
Allison Janney is in it as well! Plus Character Actress Margo Martindale. It's a who's who of who's that!
by Anonymous | reply 21 | February 9, 2020 7:07 PM |
Please stop using “cis”. The standard is “woman”. The deviation is “trans”. Women don’t need an adjective to make them real. Nor do men.
Thank you.

I don’t get it where did tv get such a strong voice in society recently? It’s our stupid teachers in the public schools and in the colleges tranny represent a very very small fraction of society so why is everybody talking about trannys so much lately?

by Anonymous | reply 43 | March 24, 2020 12:12 AM |
Watched this last night. Script and idea had some potential and it could have been fun with the right actress. It is glacially slow and the fact that Susan is being played by a man is just weird and distracts from the character which as I said could he interesting with the right actress.
Hope this isn’t a trend as actresses have it hard enough as is. Anyone who thinks this is no big deal needs to wake up and ask themselves if men would accept a woman playing James Bond. Women are too nice imo trying to play fair and not hurt anyone’s feelings when nobody ever looks out for their interests.
Mathew Broderick is now an elder lesbian. He cannot carry off the weight gain. Yikes.

Times have changed. Damn near every 25 and under white male wears nail polish, at least sometimes. A man in a dress doesn't have the amusement factor it once did. I'm sure it's still done on slapstick type shows but this movie looks like it needed a "Muriel." Molly Shannon, maybe?
by Anonymous | reply 48 | April 8, 2020 2:00 AM |
R44 you do make some good points. I still plan on checking it out.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | April 8, 2020 7:49 AM |

That Datalounge’s resident Susans are whining about it means it must be good.

by Anonymous | reply 51 | April 8, 2020 8:54 AM |
That trailer should be all the warning anyone needs. They migjt as well have included a crawl at the bottom that read "Caution: Terrible."
by Anonymous | reply 52 | April 8, 2020 9:19 AM |
I don’t think it’s that big of a deal that Hayes is playing a cis woman. I’ve never heard of an actress getting an flack for playing a cis male character.
It’s only the trans community insisting that all trans roles are played by trans actors (which is stupid).
by Anonymous | reply 53 | April 8, 2020 9:54 AM |
[quote]Why would there be outrage? Was there outrage for Madea, Shanaynay on Martin, Big Momma’s House, The Nutty Professor, Anderson Louise’s show, Lena Dunham, Peter Pan, Mrs. Doubtfire, White Chicks, Bosom Buddies?
Muriel has tagged R37 as a troll but he's totally right about this. It's obvious Hayes' character is to be viewed the same way as Medea and such, a man playing a woman for laughs. This is not Laverne Cox or Jamie Clayton playing a woman's part, it's an out gay man doing it.
R44, I haven't seen the film but obviously Hayes playing a woman is the main gag of the film, even if he's not overdoing it like Tyler Perry and such. The role is not meant to be played by a woman and it's idiotic to claim he took the role from an actress. You make it sound like women will start losing female roles to men which is just braindead, and you know it perfectly well yourself. There have been plenty of films and tv shows about middle-aged women and there will continue to be. One film with a gay man playing the lead female role will not destroy the future prospects of female actresses but you're certainly trying to make it sound like it is.

Reviews were horrific. Ain’t coming to theaters ever
by Anonymous | reply 55 | April 8, 2020 10:28 AM |
I thought it was cute. There were no huge laughs but everyone was committed to the material. I wish it had a sharper script but it was not a miserable 90 minutes since I like the cast so much. That said, I don't see myself rewatching it anytime soon.

He's an actor and a creative artist and in this film he and the rest of his collaborators are being creative and dramatizing a writer's work. All of that is great. 100% great.
All the whinging armchair psychologists and self-proclaimed advocates for social justice should simply thank the company of "Lazy Susan" for their work. After that, they should turn their attention to something they actually understand, if anything.

For those complaining about a man playing a woman: FUCK YOU.
Will is played by a straight man. That role was taken away from a gay man. There are many more roles for women than for gay men.
Actors can play roles that are not their gender or sexuality. Get over it. The complaining of “minority” groups, including women, is so over the top these days, it becoming unbearable.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | April 12, 2020 6:04 PM |

This made me laugh. You bring up a straight man and then you proceed to not hold the straight man accountable while happily pitting women and gay men against each other.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | April 12, 2020 6:14 PM |
Yeah R63. I brought that up because we all watch will and grace AND DONT COMPLAIN ABOUT IT!!!

I don't how that even applies in this instance. There's no shortage of funny women with enough name value to play the role Hayes has taken in this movie.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | April 12, 2020 6:30 PM |
Ugh that’s a terrible comparison. As it is there are very few female parts. At one point only 22% of all roles went to women. I think it’s closer to 30 now. Sean produced this so and frankly no nobody in Hollywod cares about a gay guy playing a woman in a passion project but I can assure you of a woman tried to play a man it would not fly. As a screenwriter the suits are such assholes that if you make a desk clerk or a judge female they will challenge you and often just cast a male anyway. But as someone else said it’s ridiculous to put gay male actors and females actors against one another. It only serves to keep the current structure going. Any asshole who doesn’t want to make the minor characters female will also have a problem with an out gay man. The reason some actors still try to remain in the closest is because if they are talented they have 70% of all roles available to them. Male writers are also deeply closeted. Those stats are pretty shameful too as writing is surprisingly a conservative enough profession. Lots of white douches in Range Rovers stand between you and a job. In TV they don’t want a gay man or a woman on the room. In movies if you have an online presence as an out gay man they pigeonhole you and read your script with preconceived ideas unless it’s a “gay interest” or a “chick flick” in which case you’ll get good notes but it probably won’t be made. But if a gay man and a woman go together to pitch a show guess who they show more respect to, the gay guy. It’s embarrassing to be in that position but even in 2019 when your female partner misses a meeting they make shitty jokes about female problems and her being likely to flake out when she meets a rich man. (Her flight was cancelled FYI). And the job went to the son of a producer who had only previously written the same schlock that very second straight guy of that age writes- American Pie Part 555 with no gay characters and females appearing as sex objects with 2 lines.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | April 13, 2020 1:04 AM |
Wait... R61 So you think gay men can only play gay characters or that gay characters must be played by gay men but gay men can also play straight men? To say there’s more roles for women than gay actors suggests you do think gay actors should only play gay characters which is offensive. If you think gay characters should only be played by gay actors but that gay actors should also get a fair chance at the sitcom dad and action hero roles then you’re a giant hypocrite and not as smart as you think so FUCK YOU.
I’m in Austria and part of am amateur group. It’s mostly gays and gals. Our problem is finding material with enough female roles. It’s shocking how many plays have mostly male parts. Finding a part for a gay man is no issue unless he is a poor actor who is very flamboyant.

I rented this last night on Amazon for $6.99! How can I get a refund? The plot was cartoonish and Sean looked like a gay man in drag. What was the point in him playing this part as a FUGLY woman who looks more like a transvestite in heat. Plus, all the men in the hood were flirtss, why, to get in Sean's cooch?
This included a neighbor who would do her laundry and leave it folded at the door. WHAT?? Very very poor plot, with no twist, and the redemption was hard to believe at the end. Just plain wrong from start to finish.
Margot M and the rest of the cast were good, but Sean as a woman, what was the point??? Ego, perhaps, really?
by Anonymous | reply 75 | April 17, 2020 7:27 PM |
I expect they'd have needed a bigger budget to make Sean look like a pretty woman.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | April 17, 2020 8:03 PM |
Why not give a deserving actress a big break by casting her??? Sean must be an egotistical monster. The result was a laughable movie that nobody will ever care about.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | April 17, 2020 8:58 PM |
Sean has done very well for himself and with his production company he probably doesn't even need to act anymore, but it's cool to see him still getting acting work and taking risks. I give him credit for being willing to put himself out there and try anything. He does have talent so I think he needs to keep workin it till he can't work it no more.
by Anonymous | reply 78 | April 17, 2020 10:57 PM |
Sean's portrayal of Lazy Susan was a wasted role in a movie, a newbie actress who deserved a break would have been much better. She could have promoted it with gusto! The egos in Hollywood didn't allow it. Sad.
