It's that time of year--I'm surprised to see this movie get little to no love on DL. It's quite well made, and I appreciate the fact that it has working-class adult characters rather than your typical snot-nosed high schoolers. There is a glorious scene in the beginning that shows all of the coal miners showering in the communal showers.
It's due for a rewatch, for me. I'd argue that the re-make was THE WORST 2000s remake of a 1980s horror movie. Yes, even worse than the Rob Zombie adaptation of Halloween.

Paul Kelman, who played TJ in this, was hot as hell

I actually watch this all the time and it’s shown often on cable tv, and not only this time of year either. I get a kick out of hearing the thick Canadian accents, and the atmosphere is creepy and claustrophobic.

Agreed R3, the atmosphere is great. It has a cold, gloomy, industrial feel, and the mine scenes feel really oppressive.

Prom night, black Christmas, Canadian horror had a thing going. Was The stepfather a Canadian production,?

I actually liked the remake, R1. The Fog has to be the worst of the 2000s horror remakes.

That's not in the film from my recollection, R7? Is there an uncensored version I don't know about (not the uncensored gore, which I've already seen)?

I just searched Paul Kelman (TJ) on Google and was surprised to see he has an Instagram account. Based on his posts, it looks like he is just an old, artsy, progressive hippie these days. He is rocking a Walt Whitman look and is unrecognizable with the beard.

Only seen the remake with Jensen Ackles but don't remember anything aside from it being 3D. I'm pretty sure it can't be worse than NOES (2010).

Love this movie. One of the best slashers ever. Can't wait for the new Collectors Edition Bluray this month. Met the cast a few times at conventions. What a great group of people. It just enhances the experience. I wonder why they were nude in that shower scene. It's all shot above the waist, not even an ass shot.

I can't remember a single thing about this film (which is never a good sign). A few years ago I actually sat down and watched all the famous 80s slasher films and the only three that have actually stayed with me are The Burning, Happy Birthday to Me and Just Before Dawn. The rest were just forgettable and unimaginative trash.

I remember seeing this many many times as a kid. Back in the day the premium cable channels would only have a handful of movies in rotation at any given time and this was one of them. I do remember it being a great slasher movie. I also liked the remake.

This is Quentin Tarantino’s all time favorite slasher.

R13 all the films you listed are fantastic; Just Before Dawn is criminally underrated. The Final Terror and Final Exam are two other great early '80s gems. I'd add the original Friday the 13th to your list as well—it truly is the quintessential '80s slasher. All of the Paramount slasher films—Friday the 13th, My Bloody Valentine, and April Fool's Day—seemed to have a similar tone about them. I always associate them together, even though they are quite different in terms of plot.

The remake is further proof that the guys from Supernatural ruin everything they star in.

I just received my copy of MBV a couple days ago, and they cleaned up the inserted gory scenes to where they're now seamless with the rest of the movie.
I'm still curious as to where that picture of the shower scene came from, since it wasn't in the movie and the guys were only filmed from the shoulders and chest up.

I had a summer fling in the mid-80s with a hot piece of ass. His favorite thing was to watch a slasher film and eat pizza. Then afterwards we would have sex. It was like a routine for him, we did it regularly. So, slasher films hold a special place in my sacred space!

I found the shower picture posted on a horror forum I go to. Obviously it was taken during the filming of the scene but I don’t know if it was just a candid snapshot or if they filmed an alternate version of the scene with nudity.
