I have little doubt that it happened. Not just Deneuve but a lot of French women who never married insist on being called Mademoiselle because mademoiselle doesn't just suggest singlehood but also youth. As far as the story being truth, most stars (I live in Hollywood and have met many of them) are very entitled. It's not unusual for them to walk away with things you give them. I once handed Cyd Charisse a DVD of Silk Stocking for her to sign and she said thank you and started to walk away with it.
