Could the US handle German FKK culture
Free Body Culture.
I go to a gym a short walk from my house. The showers are open 8 heads, no partitions, the wet area has a Finnish sauna and a dry sauna and a steam room, as well as a rest area. Men and women use them together, all naked. Textile free, no clothing allowed. The towel is placed the long way so your butt and feet rest on it, protecting the wood not your modesty.
In the pars in the summer we all strip down together to get the sun. AND we are okay with old bodies because we have seen them our whole lives.
PLEASE do not turn this into a towel dance discussion, it has been discussed to death, but instead give me your honest reactions to FKK culture.

“Textile free, no clothing allowed.”
I’ve been to plenty of nudist resorts where clothing is optional and most people are hanging out completely naked, but even I’m not sure I would feel comfortable in a situation where clothing was actually forbidden.

Public nudity is common in Japan as well. Of course you can get used to it-- I did. Still, there's nothing inherently more virtuous about public nudity, and shame over nudity is literally as old as the Bible.
The claim in the OP is the kind of low-grade chauvinism you get from Europeans who assume "their way" of doing things is superior to anything American. It's ironic that it's exactly the attitude Americans are criticized for.

In Japan, families - kids, mum, dad, grammy, grampa - soak naked together both in public and private. There's a story about a fire in a Tokyo bathhouse where the patrons ran naked into the streets to get away from the fire. The patrons had a small towel, which they used not to cover their genitals or dangly bits, but their FACES.

What I think is interesting is that there is (was) a teen magazine that had a section were the readers sent in nude pictures of themselves- all shapes and sizes. This would be child pornography in the US. I assume it is still going on. It had been around for ages 15 years ago.

In france also, nudity is not a big deal, as long as Arab muslims from north Africa immigration are not around, they are the only ones making it a problem there. Americans are way too puritan to be completely comfortable with nudity

In R14, the magazine is German in case that isn't obvious from may post. It is called ,,Bravo"
[quote]The magazine is controversial abroad for its section That's Me!, which often features sex interviews and full frontal nude photos of teen models from age 14 (although the age has been raised to 16)[13][14] which while legal in Germany, can cause problems with international child pornography laws. The magazine often works around these laws by having the models hold the camera's shutter button themselves, thereby showing explicit consent.

I used to buy Bravo all the time as a young teen in the mid 80s. At that point they sometimes featured nude or barely dressed men and women on their sex and health page, but they were always models. I still remember one particular nude pic of a gorgeous guy that served as my wank material for years. I'm not surprised at all Bravo is printing nude selfies these days.
BTW, a mixed public sauna where men and women go naked together seems to be more of a German thing.

R18, I grew up seeing naked boys and men all the time in the locker rooms and in saunas, public or private. It feels great and perfectly natural to be naked among other naked men. Even though I'm gay the sauna has never really been a sexual place although obviously I'm not blind and do appreciate the male beauty. Still, I'm not offended by those with less than perfect bodies. You can be naked with other naked people without it being sexual.

I have posted this before, but there was a Dear Abby column where someone asked how to deal with a mother-in-law who did not like that the parents were walking around nude in front of the children. Abby came down really hard on the parents. There was a tonne of push back from readers, who pointed out that nudity withing the family was common in other countries. What really surprised me was that Abby's response was basically ,,this is America, shut the fuck up. " Really not the kind of response that one expected from her.

I don’t know about the United States, but this would not take in Britain.
I was lucky enough visit to Budapest last year, and stopped by the magnificent thermal baths for a soak. It pains me to admit it but was easy to tell Brits & Americans, blushing and shivering in shorts & bikinis, from natives/locals & Euro tourists going nude or in Speedos. Even the open lockers & changing rooms seemed to surprise and confuse English speakers. I enjoyed myself all the same, but honestly felt self-conscious and embarrassed of my own kneejerk modesty. I wish I came from a culture more relaxed about sex & nudity.

Most people are raised to be self-conscious about their bodies. A visit at a nudist colony can be a very empowering experience when you suffer from body shame, because no matter how ugly you think your body is there'll always be hundreds of others who look worse, and yet they don't care (so why should you?).
You know what isn't such an empowering experience? Undies nite at a gay club where everybody feels the pressure to look their best and feel judged by everybody else in the room.

Germany has something called Baggersees. Man-made lakes (areas where the earth was dug up to mine the resources underneath) and some areas around them are clothing optional. And nobody would call the police because someone is nude, but - of course - the police is called when a creep is filming others or jerking off. I grew up in Germany and during the summers I went to a baggersee with my friends, after school, and we'd just get naked to swim in the lake and later eat lunch (in a picnic style set up) and just be outside until it was time to go home for dinner. That was in the late 90s where the internet wasn't so mainstream is it is now.

Another thing about Japan-- I strongly suspect rampant child sexual abuse is enabled by "kazoku buro" (family bathing). I haven't looked into it specifically but I would not be surprised if public health experts have. Again, I love public bathing and went everyday to the baths but it's not like it's not without its problems.

The FKK sponsored professional bodybuilding shows. The guys were just as muscular as those in traditional contests, and they posed the same way. They didn’t shave or trim their body hair, so it was a very natural look. I would have entered one if I was thirty years younger. I was proud of my physique at the time.

Well, for all the free nudity, there's also a perception that Germans are really into a high-degree of kink, S&M, bondage, and schiesse films. Some may call that more open, others may say they have some hangups to work through.
There's nothing inherently 'natural' about being naked. Most tribal societies along the equator cover up their lower bits for good reason - hygiene.
I don't think there's any superiority title that's granted because you have some areas for nudism. The US has those areas too - in every single state. I don't think there's anything shameful about seeing a human body, but I also don't want to see it if I don't have to (particularly those guys in SF walking around naked).
To have forced nude saunas for work gatherings (which I've heard of in Northern European countries) is over the top. And no matter how open, there's some perv there for sexual gratification - guaranteed. Particularly so if there are nude children.

Really, what makes being naked in these situations more virtuous or real or whatever? There are all kinds of diseases and other shit, including literal shit, that are contained by clothing. Why is it better to sit with your naked ass where other people sit and put your fungus covered feet on the floor where other people walk than wear a pair of shorts and some flip-flops?
Do they make women with their periods bleed everywhere? Are there really no perverts in all of Northern Europe who are going to harass women sitting naked next to them? I'm sure erections happen. They just sit out there, pointing away until they subside? It's all kind of gross. Humans invented clothing for a reason. If it doesn't matter, why isn't everyone in public in Germany walking around naked everywhere they go when it's hot out?

all of the things that others have mentioned as "problematic" for open bathing/nudity societies is also found right here.
just because you don't go looking for it, doesn't mean it is not a problem right next door. trafficking is all over, child abuse too. without any nudity outside one's home being endorsed.
but these people prove my point. we are a country that believes that dressing a certain way invites sexual contact, and that another person's lack of clothes means that we are not supposed to control our own sexual appetites/actions.
so, mentally children who probably shouldn't be out propositioning anyone, much less the wrong group of someones.
think about it this way: more nude statuary is in Mexico (a catholic country whose society believes more often in traditional roles for the genders), than will ever be allowed here. even public nude statues (their Diana fountain is fabulous!).

I see no issue in this. I’ve been to nude beaches, and when my parents had a house with a pool, I skinny dipped with friends, or by myself (while house-sitting because my parents were out of town).
Obviously, places like NYC, LA, SF, and perhaps Miami (technically the South, so I’m reserved when calling it) would set the standard.
I love being naked on the beach, such as nature intended, so I’d hit up nude baths/saunas with the opposite sex, without the expectation of sex or fear of assault.

I'm German, Eastern German even, but I could never quite get into this FKK thing. I just don't see what's so 'liberating' about it.
My parents both are typical Eastern Germans who love swimming in the nude, while my sister also prefers to keep her intimate areas covered in public places. Every now and again we still go to the beach as a family, and it's always a bit awkward. That's the only time I'm grateful for my extreme short-sightedness. I can just take off my glasses and pretend like I didn't have my parents' bits flopping about right in front of my face. Or we'll stay at opposite ends of the border: my parents on the FKK beach and my sister and I on the normal beach.

Let's just face it - there is a strong element of exhibitionism with nudism. That's fine - but no one wants to cop to it.

OP I think it's DISGUSTING. I would feel humiliated and ashamed to be forced to be naked with fraus, fish and old ladies at the gym. I think women are inferiors and should not be allowed in a gym. Women should practice yoga, dance, etc womanly activities in women only facilities. The gym is for manly men. It's the last area where a man can be a man. No fish in the locker rooms. Feministas haven't won yet.

"we are a country that believes that dressing a certain way invites sexual contact, and that another person's lack of clothes means that we are not supposed to control our own sexual appetites/actions. "
That's the thing, public nudity requires a certain trust in the people around you, and that trust isn't there in the US. It may be there in some families, but it's certainly not there on public beaches or in gyms that aren't one-sex, we just aren't sure that the other people there aren't pervs leering at hotties or children, or aren't taking pictures of hotties or children for financial gain, or aren't wanking in the bushes, or aren't making mean-girl comments about the not-hotties.
The thing is, I'm not sure that absolutely everyone in Europe or Japan actually *has* that level of trust. But if they express that mistrust, they're probably shamed for being prudes.

One of the voyeur websites has a lot of European topless and nude people sunbathing—some on their hands and knees fixing their towels, etc. The pics are posted, rated by how hot or close they can get to the subject and then the photographer wins a cash reward.

Those parts that remain covered in a lot of the world ARE sexual parts. I mean, there's no getting around that. Why would anyone want to see the sexual parts of their parents and children on a regular basis? There are things that just can't be unseen and that's one of them.
[quote]I love being naked on the beach, such as nature intended...
Nature didn't actually intend for your hairless, white body to be naked. Humans lost their coat of hair over millions of years as they slowly moved to colder climates and started wearing protective clothing. Those groups of humans that remained in hot areas retained their higher levels of melanin to protect their bodies from the sun. So, no, pale, hairless white boys running around on a beach are in no way as nature intended.
by Anonymous | reply 86 | February 2, 2020 11:48 PM

Well nature didn't intend MY body to sunbathe on the beach, I'm a pasty white person with Scandinavial-Celtic ancestry, and I live in California. If I spent all day naked on the beaches here, I'd have 2nd degree burns everywhere.
Sunbathing culture is big in northern Europe and Russia, lands that don't get much power from the sun, and which get hardly any in winter. I've seen pictures of Russians out sunbathing with winter coats on their backs and bare skin to the front in early spring, apparently after a near-polar winter some people start to crave sunlight. Maybe that's a natural reaction to the climate in those regions, but I don't share it. I've got more sunlight than my body can handle.

R93 it is a criminal offense that involved jail time and fines if done in Germany.
Most of the photos you see are from Romania or other places where law enforcement is not so strict.
NO camera or phones are allowed in locker rooms or sauna in Germany and sexual advances will get you thrown out and arrested if made when a person is 'vulnerable' ie nude in the sauna. However once they are fully dressed you are allowed to express interest.

R75, Tell me more about being "East German". Were you born after the wall fell? Is that part of the disconnect with your parents? Was FFK popular during the DDR?

[quote]Japan is also obsessed with explicit comics featuring pre-teen and teen sex. So yeah, all real healthy culture there.
Japan refused to outlaw the possession of child pornography until about 5 years ago - and as you point out, still produces tons of content featuring underage, childish-looking characters in explicit situations. We won't even get into their role as the masterminds of some of the most twisted kink imaginable - they've got major sex issues. Don't look to them to back up how 'healthy' it is to be publicly naked, bathe with your family, etc.

R74, I've read the argument in other places---that acceptance in Europe of public and multi-generational nudity encourages "healthy" attitudes towards sex, which would preclude the popularity of porn magazines, I should think. And yet, no. Furthermore, the Netherlands, e.g., is a huge source of child pornography.
I simply find the "nudity has nothing to do with sex" stance ridiculously disingenuous.

I've been naked on majority-gay nude beaches before, but haven't been naked in a mixed public setting so I genuinely don't know how I would feel about it. I'll find out soon though as I'm going to Germany shortly, hopefully won't see too many saggy growlers!

Why is the question whether the US 'can handle' FKK culture?
Fact is - almost every other country in the world does not have this. This is a weird and outlier aspect of German society.
You do you - but don't act like it's just America that has hang ups or that we're prudish. No - this is abnormal behavior for the Germans.
You can claim all you want that it is just normal and that there is no sexual aspect or perversion attached to it. But we all know that's not the case.

I've been to nude beaches several times. I have seen blond guys with a full bush, R86. Other dark-haired men like me have no problem revealing hairy chests and large bushes. Everyone seems oblivious to the sexualized elements. You can have long conversations with the people planted on the sand around you, and people smile when you get close to each other in the waves. I look forward to going again.
I would also compete in a nude bodybuilding show, if it was professionally run. I should have been more proud of my body when I had a chance.

My partner was from Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and his grandparents were Finnish. It varied by town but the saunas were public, no clothing and some segregated by sex and a family could reserve time for themselves.

I'm in my late 50s. Nudity was more common when I was growing up in liberal New York suburbia. Everyone my age or older remember some families that were more comfortable than others, too. From the 19th C to the mid to late 20th c - nudity was a lot more common in same sex gatherings. Even when I was a boy and teen, we boys would sometimes swim nude in the summer at the local natural swimming places. We all saw each other nude from grade 7 on, anyway. Also the hippies were around from the 60s into the 70s and brought their nudist ways. People were nude at P-town, for example, when my family would head up from mid-Cape where we summered. All the beaches from Jersey to Main had public bathhouses where everyone was nude. (same sex). Our country club was aggressively nude behind the locker room door. Those old farts loved that! Gentlemen's clubs in NYC had the same. Also Prep schools and old universities - all had same sex swim hours and the pool was nude. Crew practice could be in the nude for chrissakes.
Things have really changed since I was young.

I live in a town close to NY where most guys go into the sauna and fully dressed in their gym clothes and sneakers. Aside from the fact I find it disgusting I would think they would find it very uncomfortable and of no benefit whatsoever.
In the 90s at NYU the guys would use the sauna completely nude sitting on towels. It would be rare for a guy to wear a bathing suit or even be wrapped in a towel. And as many alumni used the gym there would be all ages as even the young guys had no problem with nudity or seeing old men naked. Now god forbid they see an old man naked in a sauna because there is nothing more fucking disgusting! Anyway there was a nice looking guy who used it occasionally maybe in his late 30s or early 40s completely naked and I mean completely naked. I single this gentleman out because he was missing most of his leg and had a stump at thigh level. He was completely unselfconscious about it and after being initially surprised and a just a bit grossed out myself I soon got used to it and thought it was cool he was so relaxed and comfortable about it.

Italians as a culture have exalted the human body above all others since the Greeks. But they have a problem with personal nudity. Spain and France have well known nude beaches but even though they exist in Italy it is very much frowned upon. A very buttoned up people. I'd say it was Catholicism but France and Spain were also Catholic countries.

r118. Stupid question from a German who goes regularly to the local spa and sauna place at Kristall Therme Kochel. Even there we have now two days in the week with adults under 14 allowed and people in bathing suits. I never will be there at those times.
But, please explain: Sitting in a sauna with your clothes and shoes on? For which purpose? My understanding of a sauna is a temperature between 95 and 105 Celcius. You are sitting there on your towel for 8-12 minutes and try to survive the heat.

R120, at my favorite local sauna in the US, people usually wrap a towel around the naughty bits or wear a lightweight sarong provided by the management. A man with a towel or sarong can expose 95% of his skin to the steam and still cover the naughties and protect the bench from skid marks, and the women generally expose 70-80% of their body surface area. It's small and cramped, I've never seen anyone in there eager to take everything off with strangers so close.
And WTF, "adult under 14"? There's no such thing as an adult under 14!

hello, just as an aside, the air in a dry sauna is rarely if ever 95-105 C although you can set thermostats for those temperatures.

What is the point of a "dry sauna"? There was one on my polar cruise ship, and it didn't refresh the body and spirit the way a moist sauna did. Okay, we were in iceberg country and I suppose it was handy for warming up anyone who stayed outside too long, but it was no fun at all!
Hell, I can go outside any day between May and October and experience dry heat of that temperature for free.

r121. Sorry, I did not explain it well. In my spa children at the age from 6-15 are ownly allowed to enter with an adult and only on two days in the week. On this two days you are also allowed wearing a bath suit. On any other days it is strictly textile free.
And the temperature of the different saunas are from 75 to 95 Celcius.

R116 my point was that nudity in some contexts was less taboo than today. Germans have contexts in which nudity is mundane or enforced. However, for example, my German friends don't walk around their houses nude in front of me. In every culture it is about context.

r134. Yes, they are. Which does not mean, that there is no sex in around saunas and nude beaches.
If you are looking for sex you will probably find it. But there are signs for them interested.
But you can easily join those places just for loving being naked and enjoy the feeling of naked sun bathing and swimming. It is just relaxed. Viewers and stalkers with binoculars on the place or on the other side of the river are quickly spotted. And tbe naked community is really good shooting accurately with shingle.
It is just not so much loaded with puritany. And to r127. Staying at my house, you would have met in the morning or after leaving the shower naked. And nudity is not enforced. Where did you get this idea from?

r54. Baggersee, the artificial lakes from mining gravel. There was one close to Augsburg/Bavaria were I lived. The perfect place for sunbathing and swimming, i had discovered. And for a couple of reasons I had landed on a small place with nude people. I was comfortable with them, never any sexual approach, may be I could have it, but it was always relaxed.
In winter time I cut my thumb really bad with a lot of blood around 10 pm on a Saturday night and took a taxi to the emergency room of the local hospital. I had to wait, because it was only a lot of blood. After half an hour they looked after me and sew the cut. The doctor looked familiar and we were talking about, how we know each other.
Surprise, surprise: We had spent a couple of summer days naked at our Baggersee. We've had never seen us in clothes before.

[quote]No clothes don't prevent anything. But if you normalize public spaces where "families" can rent small tubs for bathing, it's bound to cause problems.
Willing to bet that most molestation happened in U.S. homes without nudity being the norm, especially in previous generations.
