What Song Should Have Never Been Written?
My husband and I were watching “The Carol Burnett Show” and she sang, “Send In The Clowns.” The words sounded so bizarre and we were confused by the lyrics. Why and how did this song ever become popular? Forgive me, if you like the song, it’s just not our taste.
Lyrics:
Isn't it rich? Are we a pair? Me here at last on the ground, You in mid-air, Where are the clowns? Isn't it bliss? Don't you approve? One who keeps tearing around, One who can't move, Where are the clowns? There ought to be clowns? Just when I'd stopped opening doors, Finally knowing the one that I wanted was yours Making my entrance again with my usual flair Sure of my lines No one is there Don't you love farce? My fault, I fear I thought that you'd want what I want Sorry, my dear! But where are the clowns Send in the clowns Don't bother, they're here Isn't it rich? Isn't it queer? Losing my timing this late in my career But where are the clowns? There ought to be clowns Well, maybe next year

The song makes perfect sense to anyone with a non-concrete brain, experience with musical theater, understanding of common metaphor, and attention to the plot upon which it is based. The character waited too long and now feels like a fool. Cue circus analogies. Duh.
Despite your pleadings, no apology will be enough. If someone declares emphatically and at length, while repeating lyrics, that something "makes no sense," what are the people who know Sondheim's work to do? Defend him? Add an explanation more detailed than what I provided.
PLEASE do not be a woman. Please.

Desiree, who sings the song in "A Little Night Music," is an actress, so the metaphors are drawn from the theater and performing.

Through the years many people of found Send In The Clowns to be a bit... enigmatic. Without the context of the show (A Little Night Music) you have no idea that the singer is an actress who tries to rekindle a relationship with a man from her past, only to discover he has a new, much-younger wife that he won't leave. Add to that the fact that the circus metaphor -sending in clowns to distract the crowd from something that has gone wrong -is not widely known by those not in show biz. No less a personage than Barbra Streisand found the song a bit unclear, which is why she got Sondheim to add a bridge section that helped the song stand alone dramatically. The reason the song is built from short, choppy phrases is that the original Desiree was Glynis Johns, who had difficulty sustaining notes, and Sondheim wrote the song specifically for her voice.

Send in the Clowns make sense in the context of the Bway show for which it was written.
It became a hit outside the show because the tune is nice and the phrase "Send in the Clowns" sounds cool. Otherwise it doesn't make much sense,
Streisand asked Sondheim to change some of the lyrics when she sang it on her Bway album to make sense

Of course it makes sense OP- perhaps not if you are are 12 or 16. But honestly, I understood the song perfectly well when I was a kid. Now it carries even more weight. I'll leave it to you to figure it out. Streisand changed the ending lyric from "maybe next year" to "maybe their here", not really necessary to understand the song. In either case the song make perfect sense to anyone who can understand to mistakes we make in life.

I don't see what's so confusing about it. I'm not a musical theater buff and I've never seen A Little Night Music, but even as a kid hearing the Judy Collins version of the song, I understood the basics—that it's a song about someone wanting to get back together with an ex who, to her surprise, has moved on.

Many make a similar critique of much poetry. Some have what it takes naturally to enjoy words in a different way than words with a strait-forward and clear lieral meaning. The ability or capacity can be developed in many. I find younger people generally have trouble with lyrics such as these, and poetry.
An emotion or a memory distilled, and evoked by a word, or a simple turn of a short phrase is sort of a telepathy straight to one's soul. It's a gift to see the beauty and feel the richness of words, though they may not seem to make ordinary sense.

"Missing" by Everything But The Girl, for this lyrical abomination: "I miss you like the deserts miss the rain" -- which means you don't miss the person, because a desert, and all the flora and fauna associated with it, would cease to exist if it rained regularly.
