What Song Should Have Never Been Written?

My husband and I were watching “The Carol Burnett Show” and she sang, “Send In The Clowns.” The words sounded so bizarre and we were confused by the lyrics. Why and how did this song ever become popular? Forgive me, if you like the song, it’s just not our taste.

Lyrics:

Isn't it rich? Are we a pair? Me here at last on the ground, You in mid-air, Where are the clowns? Isn't it bliss? Don't you approve? One who keeps tearing around, One who can't move, Where are the clowns? There ought to be clowns? Just when I'd stopped opening doors, Finally knowing the one that I wanted was yours Making my entrance again with my usual flair Sure of my lines No one is there Don't you love farce? My fault, I fear I thought that you'd want what I want Sorry, my dear! But where are the clowns Send in the clowns Don't bother, they're here Isn't it rich? Isn't it queer? Losing my timing this late in my career But where are the clowns? There ought to be clowns Well, maybe next year

R1 I knew I was, but the song makes no sense???

by Anonymousreply 3February 2, 2020 1:51 AM

The song makes perfect sense to anyone with a non-concrete brain, experience with musical theater, understanding of common metaphor, and attention to the plot upon which it is based. The character waited too long and now feels like a fool. Cue circus analogies. Duh.

Despite your pleadings, no apology will be enough. If someone declares emphatically and at length, while repeating lyrics, that something "makes no sense," what are the people who know Sondheim's work to do? Defend him? Add an explanation more detailed than what I provided.

PLEASE do not be a woman. Please.

I had no idea Carol Burnett was back on TV, how exciting! When and what channel? I hope she left the hanger on Vicki Lawrence off this time.

R9 I will not be tainted by you freaks. We do not like the song. We are both college educated. It does not fit our tastes. Dumb!

Send in the Clowns is a metaphor, dear.

by Anonymousreply 18February 2, 2020 3:00 AM

Desiree, who sings the song in "A Little Night Music," is an actress, so the metaphors are drawn from the theater and performing.

"The Safety Dance" Men Without Hats

That's one of the dumbest!

by Anonymousreply 25February 2, 2020 3:27 AM

Through the years many people of found Send In The Clowns to be a bit... enigmatic. Without the context of the show (A Little Night Music) you have no idea that the singer is an actress who tries to rekindle a relationship with a man from her past, only to discover he has a new, much-younger wife that he won't leave. Add to that the fact that the circus metaphor -sending in clowns to distract the crowd from something that has gone wrong -is not widely known by those not in show biz. No less a personage than Barbra Streisand found the song a bit unclear, which is why she got Sondheim to add a bridge section that helped the song stand alone dramatically. The reason the song is built from short, choppy phrases is that the original Desiree was Glynis Johns, who had difficulty sustaining notes, and Sondheim wrote the song specifically for her voice.

by Anonymousreply 26February 2, 2020 4:05 AM

It makes perfect sense to the mature, OP. Just not to the teenage narcissist who never grew up.

It's surprising how dimwitted people have such a visceral negative reaction to "Send in the Clowns." I'm sure they have similar problems with algebra.

Perhaps they should just concentrate on listening to such great works as "Walking in Memphis" or "Sometimes When We Touch."

Send in the Clowns make sense in the context of the Bway show for which it was written.

It became a hit outside the show because the tune is nice and the phrase "Send in the Clowns" sounds cool. Otherwise it doesn't make much sense,

Streisand asked Sondheim to change some of the lyrics when she sang it on her Bway album to make sense

by Anonymousreply 45February 3, 2020 4:27 PM

None of the Duran Duran songs make sense whatsoever. They just rhyme nicely.

by Anonymousreply 48February 3, 2020 4:30 PM

Of course it makes sense OP- perhaps not if you are are 12 or 16. But honestly, I understood the song perfectly well when I was a kid. Now it carries even more weight. I'll leave it to you to figure it out. Streisand changed the ending lyric from "maybe next year" to "maybe their here", not really necessary to understand the song. In either case the song make perfect sense to anyone who can understand to mistakes we make in life.

by Anonymousreply 49February 3, 2020 4:47 PM

I'm not saying this song shouldn't have been written, but why, oh dear Carly, did you write "nobody does it half as [italic]good[/italic] as you" instead of "nobody does it half as [italic]well[/italic] as you"? You didn't even need the rhyme.

by Anonymousreply 54February 3, 2020 5:01 PM

Judy Dench's "Send in the Clowns" is also good but Glynis Johns' is the best.

by Anonymousreply 55February 3, 2020 5:02 PM

I've been singing "Send in the Clowns" to myself all morning. Thanks, OP. I love it.

by Anonymousreply 56February 3, 2020 5:03 PM

The lyrics make complete sense by themselves, but the song was written in the context of a musical drama as well.

by Anonymousreply 57February 3, 2020 5:06 PM

R27, granted 'what song should never have been written?' isn't the best title for a thread; OP came here for answers and got some; some were flip, some where informative.

There's no need to talk to him in such a rude fashion.

You don't have to be such a condescending cunt.

by Anonymousreply 58February 3, 2020 5:11 PM

Th bigger issue with OP is that he and his partner feel that anything that isn’t to their taste never should have been written. Interesting approach to art, music and literature.

by Anonymousreply 59February 3, 2020 5:21 PM

Isn't that how totalitarian movements are born, R59?

[quote] Th bigger issue with OP is that he and his partner feel that anything that isn’t to their taste never should have been written.

Also, that they don't understand the difference between "it's not to my taste" (fine) and "it doesn't make sense" (because I'm too stupid to understand it).

by Anonymousreply 62February 3, 2020 6:25 PM

all good points R62 and R59 (AND R61)

I just think it's not a bad idea to first try to explain it and see if the person is open to change and learning rather than just insulting them as R27 did.

by Anonymousreply 63February 3, 2020 6:39 PM

[quote] Through the years many people of found Send In The Clowns to be a bit... enigmatic.

I don't see what's so confusing about it. I'm not a musical theater buff and I've never seen A Little Night Music, but even as a kid hearing the Judy Collins version of the song, I understood the basics—that it's a song about someone wanting to get back together with an ex who, to her surprise, has moved on.

r54, don't blame Carly, she didn't write the lyrics, it was Carole Bayer Sager who wrote the lyrics.

by Anonymousreply 67February 3, 2020 7:16 PM

Many make a similar critique of much poetry. Some have what it takes naturally to enjoy words in a different way than words with a strait-forward and clear lieral meaning. The ability or capacity can be developed in many. I find younger people generally have trouble with lyrics such as these, and poetry.

An emotion or a memory distilled, and evoked by a word, or a simple turn of a short phrase is sort of a telepathy straight to one's soul. It's a gift to see the beauty and feel the richness of words, though they may not seem to make ordinary sense.

"Missing" by Everything But The Girl, for this lyrical abomination: "I miss you like the deserts miss the rain" -- which means you don't miss the person, because a desert, and all the flora and fauna associated with it, would cease to exist if it rained regularly.
