MSG in Chinese food isn't unhealthy; you're just racist, activists say

(CNN)If you've heard of the term "MSG," you might have also heard of its common -- but inaccurate -- connotations.

For years, monosodium glutamate, a food additive known as MSG, has been branded as an unhealthy processed ingredient mainly found in Chinese food, despite a lack of supporting scientific evidence.

This perception, which activists argue is outdated and racist, is so widespread that the Merriam-Webster dictionary has an entry for the term "Chinese restaurant syndrome" -- a type of condition that allegedly affects people eating "Chinese food heavily seasoned with monosodium glutamate," with symptoms like dizziness and palpitations.

Now, activists have launched a campaign called "Redefine CRS." Headed by Japanese food and seasoning company Ajinomoto, the online campaign urges Merriam-Webster to change its entry to reflect the scientific consensus on MSG -- and the impact of misinformation on the American public's perception of Asian cuisine.

"To this day, the myth around MSG is ingrained in America's consciousness, with Asian food and culture still receiving unfair blame," said the company in its campaign website. "Chinese Restaurant Syndrome isn't just scientifically false — it's xenophobic."

In a video released by Ajinomoto, several Asian American figures, restaurateurs, and medical professionals spoke out against the misconceptions surrounding MSG and Chinese food.

"Calling it Chinese restaurant syndrome is really ignorant," said restaurateur Eddie Huang, whose memoir was adapted into the hit sitcom "Fresh Off the Boat." In the video, he pointed out that MSG is not only delicious -- but found in practically all processed foods, from ranch dressing to Doritos.

The campaign proposed a new definition for "Chinese restaurant syndrome" in the Merriam-Webster -- "an outdated term that falsely blamed Chinese food containing MSG, or monosodium glutamate, for a group of symptoms."

In response, Merriam-Webster tweeted on Wednesday that it would be "reviewing the term and revising accordingly."

"We're constantly in the process of updating as usage and attitudes evolve, so we're grateful when readers can point us toward a definition that needs attention," said the company.

The pushback and marketing attack by the salt industry slandering MSG, a glutamate, was the source of the fake Chinese Food Syndrome. The sugar industry did the same thing to Stevia in the the 70's/80's. Stevia was new competitor for C&H Sugar and MSG was a competitor to Morton's Salt. There is ZERO evidence that MSG is bad for you and because it is a glutamate it enhances the flavor of food, so it's better than salt. (Glutamates are in mushrooms, anchovies, soy sauce, yeast and naturally create a delicious flavor profile in savory foods.)

MSG makes things taste better. I suppose it could give some people a headache. Same with aspartame. Not that these things are BAD for you, but just like allergies, it’s an individual thing.

by Anonymousreply 2January 29, 2020 2:15 AM

MSG DOESNT give you a headache. It was fake news!. It was completely made up!. If some gets a headache after eating Chinese Food, it's psychosomatic. There is ZERO proof that this ever happened to anyone! If that were the case, you would get a headache after eating any food that is a glutamate. I've never heard of anyone getting a headache after eating Soy Sauce, and yet Chinese Food Syndrome is somehow a real thing. How? Soy Sauce is in Chinese food, but no one gets headaches from consuming glutamate rich Soy Sauce? Makes no sense.

r3 needs to take her meds.

by Anonymousreply 4January 29, 2020 2:56 AM

Every time my mother had it she ended up in the emergency room with palpitations. The moment she had it without MSG she was fine. It was actually a doctor that finally put it together. There seems to be some push by the industry to push MSG on the masses. Here's the bottom line: if you need MSG for food, said food is bland as shit and isn't worth eating in the first place.

by Anonymousreply 5January 29, 2020 2:57 AM

Why would anyone trust the Chinese with anything?

by Anonymousreply 6January 29, 2020 2:58 AM

R5 Your mother had high blood pressure. It was the sodium (salt) that caused her palpitations. Not MSG. That's a fake diagnosis by a doctor who also believed the fake news around Chinese Food!

Chinese Food Syndrome doesn't exist in China!!! It only exists in the US> racism.

by Anonymousreply 7January 29, 2020 3:01 AM

R5 Maybe your mother just wanted attention because your shit father was so emotionally abusive that if she faked an affliction, he would back down for a period of a time, which would make her feel like he actually loved her, instead of just tolerating her needy annoying ass!

by Anonymousreply 8January 29, 2020 3:07 AM

I have to be honest here: MSG makes my food taste much better. Guilty!!!

by Anonymousreply 9January 29, 2020 3:10 AM

CNN is reporting this bullshit? I love Chinese food, but some people say they have a sensitivity to MSG. Who cares? It doesn't impact my life

I heard it is supposed to make your food taste better and bought some Accent (MSG) and it didn't do anything for the taste of my food. I've used it on meat and vegetables and I didn't see a difference

by Anonymousreply 10January 29, 2020 3:14 AM

You think you don't taste a difference, but you have to split your food and do half with Accent and Half without.

We gays have dulled taste buds from all the dicks rubbing against our tongues since we were 12 years old!!!!

by Anonymousreply 11January 29, 2020 3:18 AM

Did cataract in your eyes block you from seeing the word SODIUM, OP? And have you ever seen how much they put MSG in your food? Like 10 tablespoons of the shit in each dish!!!!

by Anonymousreply 12January 29, 2020 3:21 AM

Shut up r12. No they don't.

by Anonymousreply 13January 29, 2020 3:25 AM

Again. NO ONE IN CHINA GETS CHINESE FOOD SYNDROME!

Why can't people understand this. If you get a headache it's just TOO MUCH SALT!!! Not MSG!!!

People are so fuckin' stoopid!

by Anonymousreply 14January 29, 2020 3:27 AM

I have heard all sorts of terrible things about MSG, but I had never heard it called Chinese Restaurant Syndrome until this article. MSG certainly has been demonized over the years, but they manage to sneak it in anyway as things like autolyzed yeast extract - I feel like being sensitive to MSG was the gluten-free of the 70s. I wonder how many of those who are oh so sensitive to MSG stuff themselves with foods that include it under another name.

It is easy to trick the public into thinking things in their food are bad - or good.

Like the 'uncured" meat scam that it running wild right now. Instead of using sodium nitrate they use celery powder - which contains sodium nitrate - just in less predictable quantities - in some cases, it is higher in nitrates than what is used in traditional curing.

Or hey, let's shun high fructose corn syrup while dumping agave "nectar" in everything - despite the fact that it is made via a similar process and is even higher in fructose (I don't use either.)

by Anonymousreply 15January 29, 2020 3:30 AM

My mother was already divorced and she doesn’t have high blood pressure. Try again.

by Anonymousreply 16January 29, 2020 3:33 AM

This like the Diamond industry convincing the public that diamonds are so rare and valuable, when they aren't, there are tons of other gems more rare! And in fact, they are now making diamonds in a LAB and there's no way to tell the difference from the real ones!

by Anonymousreply 17January 29, 2020 3:34 AM

I knew a girl in HS. She was allergic to MSG. She went to a birthday party being held in a Chinese Restaurant. Her friends said the waiter and even the manager swore they didn't use MSG. In the middle of eating her throat closed up and she stopped breathing. By the time and ambulance got there she was blue and lifeless. They tubed her and got her breathing again but not before she was brain dead. Her family kept her on life support for about a month and then let her go. This was in the 1971. Way before people knew or cared about MSG other than those like her who were allergic to it. Doctors knew about that way back then. She was 16 and died because she ate Chinese food.

by Anonymousreply 18January 29, 2020 3:34 AM

[quote] NO ONE IN CHINA GETS CHINESE FOOD SYNDROME!

No, they just get viruses, drop down dead thanks to their communist ideology, put lead in children’s toys, throw baby girls in trash bins...

by Anonymousreply 19January 29, 2020 3:35 AM

[quote]Again. NO ONE IN CHINA GETS CHINESE FOOD SYNDROME!

I can't believe you posted that. Are you 5 yrs old? They eat bats, rats, snakes, dogs, cats and probably even shit in China. The ones who can afford it eat Whales penis and rhino horns to make them virile

Most Chinese citizens are poor and can't afford to eat out at restaurants and it's the American Chinese restaurants that use MSG

by Anonymousreply 20January 29, 2020 3:36 AM

They are literally outing that there’s an MSG lobby pushing propaganda. Using racism in this SJW climate is just icing on the cake.

by Anonymousreply 21January 29, 2020 3:36 AM

R18 That is an Utter lie. Total bullshit. She was allergic to Fish or shellfish. MSG won't cause anaphylactic shock! That doesn't exist.

by Anonymousreply 22January 29, 2020 3:37 AM

R7/R8 are the same troll.

by Anonymousreply 23January 29, 2020 3:38 AM

Yep r21! You got me!

by Anonymousreply 24January 29, 2020 3:39 AM

And r23 Yes, I am. This thread is so stupid, because people believe headlines instead of doing their research.

by Anonymousreply 25January 29, 2020 3:42 AM

25 Billion people live in China and no one gets Chinese Food Syndrome!!! WAKE UP, PEOPLE!

by Anonymousreply 26January 29, 2020 3:43 AM

Chinese food is the best food. Leave the Chinese alone assholes. They're harmless.

by Anonymousreply 27January 29, 2020 3:45 AM

Restaurants OVERLOAD food with salt/sodium to make it taste better. Salt = taste. MSG allows you to use LESS salt/sodium and make foods still taste better! It's actually a "healthy alternative"! Back in the day, If restaurants find out about this, the salt industry would crash! This is what was so threatening to the sodium / salt industry and why they had to kill MSG! Creating this fake illness was the way to get this product off the shelves! And it worked! But it wasn't true.

When you see a product that is "low sodium", it probably has MSG in it, just fyi. And it's harmless.

by Anonymousreply 28January 29, 2020 4:03 AM

[quote] 25 Billion people live in China and no one gets Chinese Food Syndrome!!! WAKE UP, PEOPLE!

You just have to love a person who is so proudly ignorant and keeps posting the same nonsense. That would be something my 6 yr old nephew would say.

Here's a little FYI for your "never been out of your state" self. People in China do not eat American Chinese food. American Chinese food is not considered Chinese food by people from China. Your dumb ass will be shocked to find out that there is no General Tso's chicken, Sweet and Sour what ever, Mongolian Beef, Orange chicken or any of the other abominations you think are authentic Chinese food

Wake up and leave your county once in a while. There's an entire world out there

by Anonymousreply 29January 30, 2020 8:03 PM

The Chinese invented MSG, you dumb piece of dogshit!!! Now, fuck off!!!

by Anonymousreply 30January 30, 2020 8:08 PM

Never trust chinks.

by Anonymousreply 31January 30, 2020 8:08 PM

Anybody that takes CNN seriously in 2020 needs to re-examine their journalism preferences.

by Anonymousreply 32January 30, 2020 9:01 PM

[quote] The Chinese invented MSG, you dumb piece of dogshit!!! Now, fuck off!!!

You're a deplorable aren't you? They're proud to be ignorant too. ONCE again, you open your mouth and spout off nonsense. The Chinese did not invent MSG.

MSG was first prepared by a Japanese biochemist, NOT Chinese. You must be under the assumption that all Asians are the same. You would be wrong AGAIN. They aren't the same

A little FYI for your dumb ass, the first article on MSG and headaches was in the New England Journal of Medicine in 1968. It was written by a CHINESE Doctor who wrote that MSG made his neck go numb and gave him headaches. This CHINESE Dr actually referred to his symptoms as ‘Chinese Restaurant Syndrome’.

Do you ever get tired of being so stupid? I guess it's a full time job for you

by Anonymousreply 33January 31, 2020 5:37 AM

Unlikely, R18, it was probably a peanut allergy.
