I think it's time we revisit "GHOST" (1990) and the wonderfully fun performance Whoopi gave us
I know a lot of people that feel her Oscar win is laughable, but I loved her in this movie so much. She is phenomenal in every scene, both in the more serious moments and the comedic ones. I 100% believe she deserved that award.
I loved this movie since I was a kid! It is so romantic, and sad. I always hated that Sam gets killed, but I don't know why they walked through that alley late at night!!! I still do not walk through them in 2020!
I loved Demi in this, with her cute sassy little boy haircut. She was believable as a heartbroken woman trying to move on from her dead love.
Willy Lopez terrified me as a kid lmao.
Patrick Swayze was so hot in this,

This movie made $505 million worldwide in 1990. That is huge. Idk what that converts to in 2020, but a lot.

She definitely inhabited that role, as did Demi and Patrick Swayze. It also reflected a more innocent time. There is so much cynicism now (and for good reason) that this film takes us back to something more pleasant and positive.

The scene where Swayze turns up at the seance and first talks to Whoopi is so, so, funny.

And Tony Goldwyn was incredibly creepy. What a body, though.

I recently watched this. I was blown away by completely moved by how beautiful Patrick Swayze's acting was. He was so tender and yet, a strong man. What a caring soul.
In Wong Foo he was also a delight. R. I. P

This was such a huge hit in 1990. This film, Pretty Woman and Home Alone at the end of the year dominated 1990.
Whoopi was wonderful. "You're in danger gurl" has helped this movie become popular with younger generations.
Hollywood just can't seem to make movies like this, Pretty Woman or Home Alone anymore.

Every Willie Lopez still terrifies me. The movie did do a good job of showing what happens to people when they die, except for the ghost part. There are no ghosts walking the Earth. You get taken away almost immediately.

R18. Agree. Pretty Woman happened to be on yesterday and the scene of Julia at the table with Richard Gere was cringe. She's a little more than a prop. Disgusting how it's all white men corruptly doing business.
The normal hotel manager having to save her and teach her how to use a fork.
The best scene was when the bitchy sales clerks wouldn't let her shop and she comes back and shows them!

Whoopie had tough competition that year, it was a very strong year for supporting actresses:
Lorraine Bracco, Goodfellas; Annette Bening for The Grifters, Winona for Mermaids, Shirley MacLaine for Postcards, Diane Keaton and Talia Shire for Godfather III, Mary McConnell for Dancing with Wolves.

I thought this movie was novel in that it combined a beautiful and tragic love story with a genuine thriller. While I enjoyed Whoopi in it, her performance seemed cartoonish to me and far from Oscar worthy.
I thought Tony Goldwyn, on the other hand, was a brilliant villain. In the scene when he realizes his plot is unraveling, he conveys a true sense of terror and desperation.
By today's special effects standards, the little black demon ghosts that come and drag away the bad guys to hell look pretty cheesy, but at the time they were chilling.

This movie is just a piece of trivial fluff. Whoopi Goldberg's win is one of the major Oscar travesties. The other nominees were Annette Bening (The Grifters), Lorraine Bracco (Goodfellas), Diane Ladd (Wild at Heart) and Mary McDonnell (Dances with Wolves). They ALL were more deserving of the award that Whoopi Goldberg.

It presented subtle messages (what happens to bad people when they die), well above average acting, comedy, deep drama. The scene where the guy tries to log into the bank account and the password's been changed is brilliant. To be able to get across onscreen the tension was not easy.

Oh fuck you. "Ghost" is a terrific entertaining movie, just what movies are supposed to be. The Academy routinely shits on comedic performances and this time they go it right, Whoopi's performance is most definitely remembered over the other nominees. You think but a few remember Diane Ladd in "Wild At Heart? Most people couldn't tell you who co-starred in "Dances With Wolves" and people think of Anjelica Huston when remembering "The Grifters". Great performances but clearly not memorable.
I worked behind the scenes of movies and talked to someone at Paramount about a month before the release and told her I had seen an early trailer and it will be a blockbuster and she was thrilled because they really didn't know what they had.
Then I got to meet Whoopi and my friend got the DVD signed and did the famous quote and she told us, people yell that to her all the time, and that she never saw the movie. She, along with many actors never see their finished film.

"No Whoopi deserved it more. Lorraine Bracco is not that likeable and neither are any of the others."
And Whoopi Goldberg is "likeable?" HAHAHA! She's a CUNT. All the other actresses nominated gave better performances, were more talented, and were "likeable." By the way, they all were a million times more attractive than Goldberg, who has a face like a horse's ass.

Oh, go suck Whoopi Goldberg's withered clam."Ghost" was a mindlessly entertaining piece of piffle, as a lot of blockbuster movies tend to be. It was worthless. Movies of this sort appeal to a lowbrow audience and there are a lot of lowbrows out there. Like you, Whoopi lover.

Annette was also great in Postcards. One scene, but it's very memorable and she steals the picture right out from under Streep (who was okay, but her laid back performance seemed to contrast with everyone else in that movie, who was doing first rate work).

Shirley should have been nominated for Postcards from the Edge. Clearly one of the most surprising omissions in Oscar history in my opinion. Definitely one of my favourite Shirley performances.
But Whoopi was great in this, and a reminder there was a time when Whoopi was a great film star. She could deliver excellent performances (The Color Purple) and was a genius at comedy (Ghost, Sister Act) and could do both comedy and drama (Corrina, Corrina).
1990 was a good year for Whoopi. She also starred in the excellent and underrated The Long Walk Home with Sissy Spacek. They both should have been nominated for that film, and indeed, Whoopi could have been - and should have been - a double nominee for leading (The Long Walk Home) and supporting (Ghost).

There's a reason why "The Color Purple" didn't win any Oscars. It STANK. No kidding, it really was a very white, sanitized version of the novel, which was much darker. I mean, depicting lesbian love by having wind chimes tinkling was funny as shit. And that pathetic scene where the two sisters (teenagers who still play patty-cake?) are being physically torn from each other was more laughable than moving. And it didn't take place in the novel. It was the very white Steven Spielberg's attempt to jerk tears.
