R25, I saw Dimitrov from front-row courtside at the ATP cup a couple of weeks back, and I was surprised at how weird-looking he is IRL. He’s very thin, with broad shoulders, hands so big they look out of proportion to the rest of his frame, and a really tiny head. It all seems to come together on television, but looks really strange IRL.

by Anonymous | reply 40 | January 22, 2020 11:54 AM |
Another shameless WC from the AO, Lleyton Hewitt in the doubles (partnering Jordan Thompson). They of course gave him a super cushy draw too, opening against two Korean unknowns.
Hasn't he retired like 5 times? Why can't he just bow out gracefully... He doesn't even play on the tour any more, nor does he even have a ranking. Just gets a free wildcard into a grand slam every year. Why not give one to Pat Rafter or Jelena Dokic?
I normally wouldn't care but it just takes away a spot from a deserving player who works full time, all year long grinding it out in Challengers and smaller events in the hopes of playing the grand slams (without which they might not break even for the year in terms of $$).

Nick Kyrgios and Amanda Anisimova (didn't they break up? He was cheating on her with Kalinskaya).
Venus Williams and world #1 Juan Sebastian Cabal (would be nice for him to win something since Farah got a doping ban).
Jelena Ostapenko and Leander Paes.
Bethanie Mattek Sands and Jamie Murray reuniting.
Kirsten Flipkens and Jergen Melzer.
Hsieh Su-wei and Neal Skupski.
Barbora Strycova and Marcelo Melo.
Zhang Shuai and Nicolas Mahut.
Polish duo of young Iga Swiatek with former #1 Lukasz Kubot
Plus the usual suspects (Melichar/Soares, Krejcikova/Mektic, Chan/Dodig, Chan/Venus, Dabrowski/Kontinen).

Halep and Bencic's quarter is actually VERY soft. Both of them should really make it to the QF and duke it out for a spot in the semis.

Michael Ymer served for the match at 6-5 against Khachanov and really was the better player for most of it. Hopefully he will have his breakthrough soon, Khachanov probably toast now for the next match against Kyrgios... these tall guys don't recover so well.

we just heard the stat that this AO was the 1st slam since Wimbledon 2009 in which all women's top 10 seeds reached the 3rd round then boom Serena and Keys both lose
Wang played very well. She was rock solid, absorbed Serena's power a lot of the time and went for her shots when she could. There were some great hard-hitting rallies. Yes Serena overpowered Wang at times but Serena also made plenty of mistakes. Whoever said these courts are playing fast was incorrect. They're definitely slower than at the USO.
Jabeur has a real unique shotmaking game. She's short, fat but powerful. She was hitting great angles off the puffy Wozniacki forehand and it was a fitting way to send her into retirement
Fucsovics continues to be the #NextGen killa. Shapovalov, Sinner and now Paul.

R99, Reger Fedex analysis on court
1)It is fast during day time under sunlight
2)Is is slow during indoor
3)It get slower in the night
4)It is very fast with new balls (compare to new balls in other tournament )
5)But after six seven games it is is very slow(compare to older balls in other tournament s)
6)With passing of each day court is becoming faster
These are things said by Roger and not me. I don't know scientific reason for that . I know how heat and sunlight affect speed of clay and grass court . I also know how density and length of clay and grass court affect the speed of the court . But I have no clear idea how it affects hard court.
I was under impression that under extreme heat and sun, hard court gets slower but this is not always true. My impression was based on commentary during 1999 AO semifinal between Lindsay Davenport and Mursemo
commentators were saying that there was so much that court almost became slow like a sand court

How many more years does Madison Keys have to be on the tour before she learns how to string together more than 3 shots in a rally? Given her natural ball-striking talent, she has to be the biggest flop on the WTA.
by Anonymous | reply 105 | January 24, 2020 5:08 AM |
Keys is just a dumb player and some days she just has no accuracy. Sakkari is a hard-working scrapper in tip top shape but she doesn't have nearly the amount of power of Keys.

Q. What do you make of Serena winning her first title in three years in Ausckland ?
KAROLINA PLISKOVA: I think she had a couple chances already last two years. I think this time, especially there was no really opponent which would have the game to beat her
by Anonymous | reply 115 | January 24, 2020 8:17 AM |
R115 well if not for Serena's ankle injury last year, Pliskova would have lost 6-1 in the third set. She has no room to shade anyone

Osaka played as stupidly and carelessly as Keys did earlier. Flailing about, missing shots by several feet, well the ones that didn't hit the net and fall back onto her own side.
Gauff has amazing composure far beyond her years. She was solid tonight. Nothing too special but she kept her cool and let Osaka self-destruct. A lot of other players her age and older would have simply choked. She's so steady. Champion's mindset

Big choke from Millman. Embarrassing. I guess we will see Djokovic destroy Federer in the semi.
by Anonymous | reply 137 | January 24, 2020 12:50 PM |
Oh geesh, Millman was up 8-5 in the 5th-set tie breaker and then he didn't win another point.

I doubt Federer will get to the semis. He will be exhausted after tonight.
by Anonymous | reply 139 | January 24, 2020 12:53 PM |
Roger really escaped tonight. What a shame for Millman, this win would have vindicated him for all the people who said him beating Federer at the USO was a fluke. Roger was stressed and GRUMPY tonight, and Mirka must have gone through 3 packets of Maltesers. At least this match will take the legs out of him a bit.
It is frustrating watching these top players being thoroughly outplayed and yet still coming through in the end, based mostly on their reputation. Thiem is another one the other day.
Ugh. These draws are TRULY falling apart. Can Fabio Fognini just have another random great run and beat them all? He and Ons Jabeur should win the whole thing... i'm here for great shotmaking!
by Anonymous | reply 140 | January 24, 2020 1:02 PM |
I don't think tonight great play will do any favor for Milliman. Now he will Knowns as great choker like PCB. People are saying he can learn so much from this loss. thta is bullshit. He will have a permanent monkey on his back from now on

[quote] It is frustrating watching these top players being thoroughly outplayed and yet still coming through in the end, based mostly on their reputation.
It’s part of the game. Players’ reputations (either positive or negative) precede them onto the court. If you’re up against a player with Federer’s reputation, you’re bound to get really tight at the most important moments, even if he’s having a totally off day. I remember Hingis once came back from a couple of match points down on a day she was playing like a mere club player and said that “Being number one counts for something”. The same is true in reverse for current Serena Williams: she’s now got a reputation for “freezing” in tight matches, and players know that they *can* beat her if she’s off and they’re on.

by Anonymous | reply 154 | January 24, 2020 8:55 PM |
Tsitsipas is a big dissapointment, big mouth but when he has to deliver he fails.
I know Milos served really well, but the truth is Tsitsipas was winning easily his serve games till the first set was on the deciding games, and then he lost his first serve on the second and of course he played like crap the tie break of the third. It's not that he lose, it's that he failed at every important moment of the match.
Osaka is a nobody without Bajin. She can say whatever she wants but she was playing amazing and now she is just another brainless ballbasher.

Pavlyuchenkova is a solid ballstriker but yeah her fitness and movement have hindered her. She has good footwork but sometimes she's too slow to set up in time. When you're not in position then you can end up just bashing the ball making a litany of errors but she seems be timing everything well so far against Pliskova.
Pliskova hates to play defense and she seems bothered by how consistent Pavlyuchenkova has been so far

R173: That record is all Margaret had. Once someone matched it she'll be forgotten, she was irrelevant to make women's tennis the sport it is today, and most of her Australian open titles were more a national championship than a real GS. She was a great player but nobody cares about her right now.
Garbiñe is back, bitches. Conchita must feel vindicated with her win and Pliskova tanking once again.
Medvedev seems solid as a rock. I want him to reach at least semis to show youngsters that you can be regular at GS.
Zverev is doing well, and in my opinion it's because he doesn't feel the pressure. His last crisis was weird, he was destroying De MIñaur (and Alex played really well that tournament) and suddenly he couldn't sever to save his life. I'm curious to watch his match against Rublev, in my opinion Zverev is more talented and he won in the past, but right now Rublev is solid and with a lot of confidence and could make Zverev's game wobble

It'll be interesting his match against Nadal, it'll be Nadal's first real test
by Anonymous | reply 195 | January 25, 2020 11:36 AM |
Test?? Nadal will eat Nick for breakfast. Nick could not properly put away Karen Hemsworth who was completely out of form, not to mention out of gas. Do you think he can do some damage to Nadal

Dominic Thiem tells Barbara Schett on Eurosports he already split with Thomas Muster after... two weeks.
"No personal problems, but profissionally the things didn't connect".
Domi will stay with Massu and dad Wolfgang (at times)
by Anonymous | reply 197 | January 25, 2020 12:45 PM |
Kyrgios has a shot against Nadal. Nadal doesn't like to play him. Nadal leads their H2H 4 matches to 3, so it's not like Nick hasn't beaten him before or Nadal dominates him. Nick didn't play all that great at Wimbledon last year and although he lost to Nadal in the 4th Round, it was in four tight sets.
I fucking hate Nadal. I'll cheer like the home crowd in favor of Nick. Anything but another Nadal Slam win please.
by Anonymous | reply 198 | January 25, 2020 2:03 PM |
There is no way Nadal will win this year. His draw is too brutal. Djokovic has it in the bag.
by Anonymous | reply 199 | January 25, 2020 2:07 PM |
And who would defeat him before the finals, R199,? I am sorry, I am not purposely trying to be argumentive or pessimistic but there is no one who can stop him before the final.
Nick is toast after today's match.
Domi has been very inconsistent in this tournament and has trouble closing out sets. And even if somehow manage to defeat Monfils and give a tough 5 set fight to Nadal I don't think he will be to finish the job. (Remember 2019 US open Quater final?)
Medvedev has still not recovered from his injury and has to face Stan and Sasha/Rublev before the semis. I don't think he would have enough left in his tank to defeat Nadal
At this this time only Nole can defeat him and that is why I am rooting for Nole
by Anonymous | reply 201 | January 25, 2020 2:18 PM |

[quote]Gee, how surprising. Roger faces yet another unseeded player in a night match, giving him the maximum rest possible after his 5-setter.
You might not like it, but when Federer is playing at the AO, and the match is being shown on telly in Australia, that is ratings gold for the broadcaster. Literally, millions of people tune in, and ads for the match cost millions upon millions. Do you think any of these business people, whose existence is predicated exclusively on generating moolah, really care that a sarcastic little troll like you thinks that the decision to put Federer on the main court for the night match might be—gasp!—rigged? I get that you don't like Federer (like I don't like Serena or her brand of tennis), but we're in a very small minority—when these players are playing, they sell tickets and they max the ratings on television.

I just wonder about Kyrgios' physical state. Yeah he'll have a day to rest but he blew a chance to finish off Khachanov in straight sets. Then the next 2 sets both were long. He took an injury timeout up 5-2 in the 1st set. I'm hoping for a tough match but it seems like Nadal will get lucky again
by Anonymous | reply 211 | January 25, 2020 4:46 PM |
R11, Kyrgios did take the time to gaslight Rafa by calling him the GOAT, so he (Nick) may really believe that he has a chance to win.
by Anonymous | reply 212 | January 25, 2020 5:37 PM |
R201: It's not a question of who could win against him, it's a question that he has a good bunch of tough matches ahead and all the GS he won recently he defeated his rivals quite easily till reach the finals.
I think it's very difficult to defeat Kyrgios, Thiem and Medvedev without being on court hours and hours and he has enough trouble against Nole on hard courts to have a chance if he reach the final after long and tight matches in the previous rounds.
Curiously Nole had the toughest draw but the ones who can give him trouble lost in third round.
Lil Diego will give him some trouble, he is a fighter but Nole seems to be in top form right now. A ver inspired Raonic could have a chance (but he never won against Nole in 9 matches so the chances are very low) and Federer doesn't have a chance after his match against Millman (even with that i think he'll be in semis because his draw is not the most demanding).
ON the woman's i'm very interested in the Gauff-Kenin. Kenin is a totally different kind of player who won't give Coco free points, on the other hand Coco seems mentally stronger and that could give her the edge
by Anonymous | reply 213 | January 25, 2020 6:15 PM |
R207 Maybe they don't care about his complain, but they don't want Nole to complain again. No matter if Roger is ratings gold you can't rig the tournament and when you put one player to play at night again and again that's exactly what you are doing.
Anyway, after his match against MIllman, Roger chances to win are close to zero
by Anonymous | reply 214 | January 25, 2020 6:20 PM |

Barty and Kvitova are the only slam champs left in what was a heavily loaded half of the draw. Serena, Venus, Osaka, Stosur, Stephens and Wozniacki were all there as well. If Barty and Kvitova both win they'll face off in the QF. So the other SF from this half will be completely new to the big stage of a slam

Yes, that's a great thing about Diego. He's got a huge heart.
Stan/Daniil is a very interesting match. And the Rafa/Nick grudge match could be fantastic if Nick isn't too gassed.

Looks like Djokovic is gonna extend his h2h against Federer.

I love John for expressing a strong opinion. TC played the Martina story the other night. In 1990, the day after Martina won her 9th Wimbledon, and more importantly felt 100 pct. love and acceptance from the crowd, Court came out with this:

Kenin is not a good matchup for Gauff. Kenin doesn't wilt and she has enough smarts to go after a weakness like she did the Gauff forehand.

I am expecting a lot of public statements in the coming days about Margaret Court and homophobia. All players will be asked in their press conferences about the issue, and whether it was right to honour her. Hopefully Rennae Stubbs, Casey Dellacqua, Nicole Pratt, Louise Pleming, Monique Adamczak, etc. and the other brigade of outspoken Aussie lesbians come up with some sort of protest or open letter.
I don't even know why she demanded this ceremony, she's not even involved in tennis any more really. She never shows up to watch the matches, doesn't do commentary, doesn't have an academy, doesn't mentor young players, doesn't participate in documentaries about tennis. She left it all behind for her homophobic cult and now she wants back in just so she and her hatred can be the centre of attention? Bye.

Sandgren at least learned his lesson. He no longer tweets or likes conspiracy theories or alt-right stuff on twitter anymore.

by Anonymous | reply 258 | January 26, 2020 6:09 PM |
Doesn't make Sandgren any less of a deplorable piece of shit.
by Anonymous | reply 259 | January 26, 2020 7:28 PM |
Is he really a deplorable or just a dumb jock, because some of his tweets were very very dumb.
Most tennis players are conservative, is a sport for rich people after all. Of course conservative and homophobic are two different things, and we have some conservative players, i'm thinking in Juan Carlos Ferrero, for example, who are clearly not homophobic.
But if my memory doesn't fail, apart of the homophobia were some racist tweets too.
At least he is smart enough to not make the same mistake agains

Sandgren played amazing tennis against Fognini, who wanted to win. The match was fantastic. Can't you just enjoy the tennis and leave the political cunting out of it R259? On ONE thread, FFS?
by Anonymous | reply 267 | January 26, 2020 8:32 PM |
Sandgren himself made political statements. I will comment on his politics if I like. And if YOU don't like it you can go fuck yourself after you jack off to your Trump poster.

The AO was looking disappointing for American tennis fans due to early loss of Serena Williams, Madison Keys, Sloane Stephens, Francis Tiafoe. Good for them that at least Sofia Kenin and Tennys Sandgren are keeping American hopes alive

"It's her list of offensive and homophobic statements.

Muguruza is back! 6-3 6-3 over Bertens
Chris Evert still being a shady ass bitch lmao Pam mentioned how Garbine's new coach Conchita Martinez upset Navratilova in 1994 Wimbledon final. Chris adds "yeah upset Martina in more ways than one"
by Anonymous | reply 294 | January 27, 2020 4:33 AM |
Team Daniil. He's up two sets to one over Wawrinka.
by Anonymous | reply 295 | January 27, 2020 5:00 AM |
Kontaveit won. . She will play Simona Halep
by Anonymous | reply 296 | January 27, 2020 5:03 AM |
Hopefully Kontaveit hits Halep off the court. If we can't have a fun winner like Jabeur having a dream run, or Pavlyuchenkova finally harnessing the talent she's had for years, then i'd rather see Petra K add to her slam haul than the other three.
Unlike Muguruza or Kerber she doesn't tank throughout the entire year, tries to keep tennis interesting even in the smaller events, and actually gives the illusion that she WANTS it. It would also be a nice story after her stabbing, and how she came so close last year. It really is odd to me that Kerber has more slams than her, and i'd rather die than watch Screamona push and grind for 3 hours in the final while shrieking her head off and crying to Darren.
I'm glad McEnroe is dragging Marge Court and I hope others follow his lead! What are you afraid of, Evert and Davenport and co?
by Anonymous | reply 297 | January 27, 2020 5:43 AM |
I just knew Wawrinka and Medvedev would go 5 lol
Medvedev will have to learn to improve his volleys and stop being so passive if he wants to make his life easier. Nadal, Djokovic and Murray all did it.
Medvedev is like Murray in that he's not the hardest hitter on tour but is capable of hitting harder than he usually does. Like Murray he picks when he wants to try to end points. Sometimes he's just content to get the ball back which can cause numerous long rallies and in slams, very long matches.
by Anonymous | reply 298 | January 27, 2020 6:25 AM |
R298 I agree. The commentators often talk about how Medvedev 'bores' his opponents into making an error. I get what they mean, it's those long, slow, deep rallies that you will be stuck in forever with him if you don't 'go for it'.
But with Stan in Stanimal form like he is right now in this set, playing like Wozniacki with a big serve is not going to cut it. Medvedrug has the length and strength to hit WAY bigger (in fact he used to, like in his AO match against Djokovic 2 years ago). But being passive is what brought him these career best results, so...
by Anonymous | reply 299 | January 27, 2020 6:38 AM |
Pavlyuchenkova served at 5-2 in the 1st set only to lose it 6(5)-7
Kerber has great defense as always but her usual rally balls seem to be in Pavlyuchenkova's strike zone
by Anonymous | reply 300 | January 27, 2020 8:08 AM |
Nadal and Kyrgios at the least are going 4 sets
by Anonymous | reply 301 | January 27, 2020 8:43 AM |
Pavs hit 28 winners and 12 unforced errors in the first set only to lose it.
