Watching the movie today, you see how awful it is - terrible acting (with the exception of Dolly Sharpe), silly plot, and horrible production values. It was, however, one of the first pornographic films to attempt a storyline and do it with humor and comedy. And it did usher in the "golden age" of porn, where explicit films also had decent screenplays, production values, and performances.

There were many other X-rated films in the 1790s that were much better than "Deep Throat" - check out "The Opening of Misty Beethoven," "The Devil in Miss Jones," and "Take Off," for example - but it was the film that launched a thousands ships.

Also, not only was Thora Birch's father in "Deep Throat," but so was her mother, Carol Connors, who played Young Dr. Young's nurse.

And as far as Linda Lovelace being forced at gunpoint to perform in the film, well, that's in dispute. A number of her former co-stars insist that Lovelace was a willing participant in everything she did. Later in her life, Linda may have come to regret what she did in her youth and revised her history to justify her past, but her true story remains a big question mark.

The Dolly Sharp story (she played Linda Lovelace's roommate) is fascinating and heartbreaking. The Rialto Report did a great in-depth story on her a few years go. Well worth reading.
