Blue State DLers: Were You Aware Of How Much Deplorables Hates Obama While He Was In Office?
I will admit to living in a bubble on that.
I assumed there were Deps who hated him because he was black and that the Tea Party losers made getting anything done impossible, but I did not realize how many Deps considered him some sort of radical Socialist who was hell-bent on destroying the American economy.
In my bubble people felt he was a (Bill) Clintonian centrist who didn't push Wall Street or big business all that hard, but who'd steered us out of the Great Recession and was generally well regarded by most.
Was sort of a shock to see how deep the anger and hatred towards him went, as I'd assumed that while there were plenty of bigots, most people were happy with the economy and Obamacare didn't affect anyone with employer-based health insurance, e.g., most people.

Yes. I knew some pre-Deplorables and "Obummer" couldn't do anything right.

The Fox news watchers hated him but lots of Republicans I know and work with didn't have much against him.

OP, I don't think I agree with your premise. The anger against Obama was deep but not broad. (A minority of people really hated him because he was a black man. The rest thought he was okay or really good.) What I really think happened in 2016 is that there were too many complacent and lazy voters who thought that things would just continue in the direction that Obama had underway and that they didn't have to vote. Hillary Clinton was a flawed candidate who was not likable, so she didn't inspire people to vote for her. Many voters also didn't realize what a dipshit Trump truly was until after he got into office. You don't hear about it very often, but I have spoken to some Trump voters who are embarrassed and ashamed to admit they voted for Trump.

The voter participation rate was higher in 2016 than it was in 2012. So clearly, people WERE voting (by American standards, at least). And yes, it was very visible how much deplorables hated Obama. They burned effigies of him when he won the presidency. They accused him of not being American, being a closeted Muslim, etc. They were revolting, one woman even asked McCain on tv "is Obama a terrorist". He had the class and dignity to say "no, he is not". Imagine Trump doing that?

No. I was aware of the batshit Tea Party people, but they seemed like just a louder version of the same Republican white noise which played on platforms I pay no attention to -- talk radio, FOX news. I live in a blue area of blue California though, so it was easy to never come across these folks in day-to-day life.

I live in Texas, so it was hard to miss. Still it was a pleasure to see how many people here appreciated him while he was in office.

R8, I too am a Chicago resident...and I liked the Obama presidency. It would have been more enjoyable without all that birther BS though.

People at McCain rallies would scream out about Obama: “kill him!” You could see the look on McCain that seemed at times to verge on panic, as if he was afraid the mob was getting out of control and becoming dangerous. Sarah encourage it by saying things like “Obama palled around with terrorists and Saul Alinsky”. Nobody knew Alinsky except that he was a Jew and probably a commie.
Trump further stokes anger and fear and has given Deplorables the feeling that they could feel proud of their abominable behavior.

The deplorables hated Obama mainly due to racism, not because of his policies.

Yes, there are card carrying racists who were never going to like him and there are those who will never give a black person (half black person) any kind of credit for any accomplishments without assuming they got some kind of special help. But for most, I'm not sure if it was so much hate about Obama as it was hate about what he represented.
I think Obama represented to some this idea that white men were being pushed aside and that inclusion meant exclusion for white people. Which is what the Tea Party was really all about, white people feeling that they were going to be left behind in favor of minorities. This is why poor white people didn't embrace the ACA, they thought it was a freebie for black and brown people. And white gays turned on him because they thought he was dragging his feet on gay issues, but he essentially became the first gay president and ushered in historic movement in the long fought battle for gay rights and acceptance. And I think conservative media and politicians used fear to stoke this anger about Obama. The beige suit (for some odd reason), the beer summit, and the Rainbow White House drove them insane and they saw that as a threat to a certain of way of life that they are still fighting to hold on to.
Some people say that Obama gave us Trump which is wrong. Obama would have won a third term if he could have run. Hillary gave us Trump and it was not because she is a woman, but it was because she was Hillary Clinton.

I remember seeing some random Republican on TV looking ashy-gray and shell-shocked at the results of tbe 2008 election. Clearly, the Republicans were convinced they had the election in the bag- just like 2004.
In later races they contracted with Russian hackers to ensure wins.

I was aware, some, because i would occasionally listen to Limbaugh and similiar, had a know-thy-enemy mindset. It was more than a little eye-opening. Those shitheads, their calkers and guests acted like he wrecked the country and tortured puppies.

If you tuned in to Rush or Fox during Obama's presidency you knew how much they hated him. Fox really twisted everything he did as some sort of socialist blunder. It was relentless. Fox never had a good word to say. This steady drum beat worked and brought us the idiot narcissist we have now. Remember, there are many deplorables who only listen to Fox...anything else is automatically assumed to be a lie.

On the South edge of Chicago you will find all the white flighters who couldn’t afford to move to a better location (richer bigots moved to Kane County).
They hate brown people. They are not worth our time. Leave them to die.

I admit I wasn’t aware of it and would’ve dismissed it as racism if I was. However, it’s obvious that Obama’s election is partly responsible for what we have now. I suppose deplorables will come around to the same realization about Trump when we have a more progressive administration than ever before and take back the Senate and pretty much end the GOP.

I’m a NYC native, and trust me there are plenty of deplorables in the 5 boros. Unfortunately I was aware of it because my dad is a bashit-crazy right wing Fox News geezer who can’t not bitch about Democrats for more than 10 minutes. (Mom pretty much is too, but she keeps her opinions to herself). Dad was like thid long before Fox - we would argue about politics when I was a kid - how I’ve always been a liberal I have no idea. Now I strictly enforce the rule: if they start talking about politics during a visit, I go home.

I was. I live in NYC and come from a very affluent area on the north shore of Long Island. My mom still lives there as do many friends, most of whom are educated, by most measures wealthy and liberal when it comes to some social issues - I’m a case in point. My hetero guy friends love me and my partner. But my god is there a strain of racism that runs through all of them. It’s only gotten ugly once - when they were drunk and laughing about these racist cookies some vile bakery was making in the west village (of all places). They weren’t prepared for the abrupt push back from me - I snapped and unloaded (rhetorically speaking). We just avoid politics now.
But it’s in them. In their core. Just beneath the surface. It always has been.
I now just go to visit my mom mostly.

The worst were the closeted self identified "blue collar democrats". I had some friends who claimed to have voted for Obama. They said they'd give him a chance. He had no sooner removed his hand from the bible after taking oath then they started snarky comments, Obviously closeted racists. Of course they wound up as out Trumtards. Deplorable indeed,

R27, I truly wonder about the mental stability of those Trump voters who voted for Obama in 2008/2012. How can someone vote for Trump after voting for Obama twice? It just doesn't computer.

Be glad you missed out, OP.
"Thanks, Obama" wasn't just a meme, people said that shit constantly in everyday conversations in Texas. "Gas went up 2 cents- thanks, Obama!"
I'm surprised no one you know had issues with the Healthcare act. To my knowledge everyone in my family and close friends had their premiums go up the next year, God knows I heard about it from all of them. Mine went up too, and kept rising. It's hard to find a traditional full-time job in my industry (Food service) now. They want you to work just under the 36 hour a week line. I no longer have insurance.

[quote]Hillary gave us Trump and it was not because she is a woman, but it was because she was Hillary Clinton.
And I'm sure when the first person to come along and point out that racism and misogyny go hand-in-hand will immediately be called a "Hill-stan" and told to give up defending her.
How about the Hillary haters quit posting their never-ending hatred of all things Clinton? I mean, it's old and tired. Hillary is not on the ticket. She's never going to run for anything ever again. The most you'll have to deal with is when she dies and her supporters eulogize her with respect, love and sorrow that the most qualified candidate to ever run for the office was cheated by an orange turdsky.

People like you make excuses for Republicans, for their racism and their bigotry. Forget about Hillary: Ask yourself when was the moment Trump became the front-runner on the GOP side? Why was he allowed to even get as far as he did to the point of becoming the nominee? The majority of this country DID NOT vote for him, they voted for Hillary, but the overwhelming majority of trash aka Republicans, did support him.
Ben Carson was popular with the GOP for about five minutes. Know when? When he took up Trump's act by scapegoating human beings.
Face it, Trump won, not because of the majority of voters, but because the GOP is the party where racists, bigots and ignoramuses go to join the wealthiest who use the former to get their taxes reduced to less than zero.
The GOP is where assholes go to spread their cancerous hate for people not based on anything other than their race, ethnicity, religion and sexuality.

I was in a Target (in California) the first week of so of the Obama presidency. Ahead of me in line were 2 young, white teen girls. I watched as they pulled a stack of magazines out of the rack, turned them around and put them back in the display so you couldn't see the cover. On the cover of course, were Barack and Michelle. They were both wearing church t-shirts. I got pissed so I asked them both if that was what Jesus would have done. No reply.
