Just... felt compelled to start yet another thread? It’s not difficult enough to get tennis-related talk on here, so you wanted to create moving targets?
by Anonymous | reply 2 | January 13, 2020 10:48 PM |
R2 I made this in anticipation of the current one being payrolled. I wasn't suggesting posters start posting here yet but it's available for when the other is inevitably payrolled. You're welcome

Does anyone know any free sites showing AO? There used to be a fairly reliable Ukranian or Russian site.

Thank you OP for providing the link to the AO as opposed to the customary 'jinx' photos - while I love the DL perspective on the tennis players, I like to preview on draws/results in advance of reading the thread comments.

by Anonymous | reply 14 | January 15, 2020 12:57 AM |
The payrolling of threads seems to be based on frequency of posts over a number of days. If you max out a thread in 3-4 days you won't have to worry. If you have steady posting for a while, it seems to get payrolled
so maybe we should just post and finish these threads in less than a week to avoid it?

by Anonymous | reply 22 | January 15, 2020 11:43 AM |
R18 the handshake was bad! Collins is known to put on this ridiculous fake grunt at times. It's not just that it's loud, it's that it shows up so randomly. At least others will exaggerate it when they're hitting on the run, or hitting a bigger shot... hers is just randomly loud to rattle her opponent.
That's a shame about all the doping scandals. I wonder some times if (like in Meldonia's case) they keep taking it almost as a sign of hubris to the ITF and WADA. Like daring them 'go on, you won't ban me.' These players know that the tennis federations will do anything possible to pretend it's a clean sport. I'm sure they already cover up a LOT for the big names, just because it would be a bad look and bad for business in general.
Farah is such a hottie. Dumb question but does this mean CABAL (his partner) has to forfeit all the prize money and rankings points too? That would be beyond unfair.
Other results:
Vondrousova beats Rodionova 6-0 6-0. How the fuck did Sloane get smashed by her, and Marketa (who hasn't played in 7 months) doesn't lose a game? Vondrousova has won her last 18 games in a row though, so maybe she's in good form. Her QF is a rematch of last year's RG final against Barty.
Vekic def. Sakkari in 3. She will face Yastremska in the QF.
Bencic def. Goerges in 2 tiebreak sets. She will face Collins in the QF (battle of the bitches).
Sabalenka def. Pera in straights. She will face Halep in the QF.
Angie Kerber retires while down against Princess Dayana Yastremska. Unsure if she just couldn't be bothered going through with it (she's retired a few times at 5-0 and MP down) or if she's actually injured.
In Hobart, Muguruza def. Jabeur (who choked on MP) in three sets. Not exactly finding form but at least finding wins.

Tennis Australia pulling ALL the strings so Federer and Barty can win. She has the softest section you could ever imagine.
Also a bit odd that ALL the black players are in the same section. Serena, Osaka, Sloane, Gauff, Venus, with Maddy Keys in that same section as well. And they've stitched up Venus and given her Call Me Coco in the first round once again, probably to play up the age difference and call it an upset. Poor Granny Vee can't catch a break... is she even healthy right now?
America's Sweetheart Danielle Collins is in terrifyingly good form at the moment. I fear she may be in for another SF run. In only 5 matches she has already handed out SIX breadstick or bagel sets. Swatting away scrappy players like Kenin, Svitolina, Putin and Bencic like flies.

Putting Sloane Stephens on a show court? In a night session? The organisers make it very clear sometimes that they don't watch womens tennis, or at least haven't watched her play in the last two years. That is going to be a slog for the crowd.
Did anybody else see DL fave Collins today? She was.... something else. I am not joking when I say this wasn't even her worst behaviour in the match. It's not just that she's abrasive, there's something also bizarre about her movement and demeanour?

by Anonymous | reply 86 | January 17, 2020 7:28 PM |
I'd like to see Humbert and Harris win their first titles but they're not the favorites
I will say Humbert was impressive in getting revenge over Isner for his Newport choke last year. Quite the shotmaker
Adelaide will be Yastremska vs. Barty. Yastremska is now 3-0 vs. Sabalenka
Hobart will be Rybakina vs. S. Zhang
by Anonymous | reply 87 | January 17, 2020 7:43 PM |

typical French choke from Humbert while serving for the match at 5-3
meanwhile Paire has had another temper tantrum. Such a diva
by Anonymous | reply 92 | January 18, 2020 3:00 AM |
That's two finals in two weeks for Rybakina, and she ends with her 2nd title. Couldn't have asked for a better start to the year, but hopefully she has some gas left for the AO. She seems like a nice girl and has big shots for her age.
R77 I love these exposés. The part about Federer and the Moet had me laughing, I must have missed that when it first came out. There really is so, so, so much money in tennis. Yet none of it is trickling down to the players outside the top 100.
by Anonymous | reply 93 | January 18, 2020 3:12 AM |
Humbert is the first 1st time ATP winner of 2020. I hope we see a lot more 1st timers on the ATP this year. The last few years we've seen so many new WTA winners

Paire did hug him. They're apparently friends

by Anonymous | reply 100 | January 18, 2020 7:11 AM |
Barty is a vulture . She is worse number 1 than Jelena Jankovic I know she will not go beyond Quaterfinal in AO open despite being handed an easy draw
by Anonymous | reply 101 | January 18, 2020 7:15 AM |
Barty won Roland Garros, the use of vulture in Barty's case is beyond ridiculous.
Some people seem to get too used to big hitters and can handle a player who use her brain on court.
Bajin has a lot of work to do with Yastremska. She has the potential to be use, but she is the kind of player who hit first and think after, which is not exactly the bets combination. If he is able to make her have a game plan beyond hitting to ball harder she'll be huge in no time
by Anonymous | reply 102 | January 18, 2020 9:51 AM |
Adelaide:
Rublev blasts Harris 6-3 6-0
2 titles in 2 weeks. look out if he's not tired at the AO
by Anonymous | reply 103 | January 18, 2020 9:56 AM |
He was barely challenged this two weeks. He had two tough matches against Evans and Felix, but two very easy ones and had a bye on first round. And last week he won all his matches in two sets and only Moutet on the second set give him a fight.
If he wins easily the first round, he'll be perfectly ok
by Anonymous | reply 104 | January 18, 2020 10:47 AM |
To be fair, Barty won RG kind of by accident. Clay remains her worst surface, before that run she had only ever won two matches there, each five years apart, and on her way to the title she only had to face a single top 20 player (messy Madison Keys). Even she looked embarrassed and confused after the win and specifically brought up Sam Stosur, an actual Aussie clay specialist who was consistently a threat there.
I think she's a great player, with an awesome personality and deserves her #1 ranking (I mean she won the YEC, was the only one to make the 2nd week at all four slams, and had the most top 10 wins last year). But she doesn't have a 'second gear' when she needs it. And despite that rather lucky RG run, I still don't think of her as a big match slam player exactly. She still gets a bit passive and defensive, her game is a little bit toothless at times and the serve bails her out a lot.
Yastremska is much better against players who feed her a lot of pace.

R114: No, she is not a lesbian
R116: And Sam Stosur has a girlfriend for quite some time. I don't know if she had a boyfriend but that was ages ago
And yes, there's no so many openly lesbian players, but way more than the big fat zero of openly gay players on atp
by Anonymous | reply 118 | January 18, 2020 6:51 PM |
Here is the bottom line and cold hard truth. Lesbian tennis players do not lose much in terms of sponsorship or admiration from the tennis fans that a gay male tennis player would, unless they are really abrasive like Martina Navratilova.
I am not saying that there is zero lesbian-phobia in the tennis world. Yes there are still tennis fans even in the first world who hate lesbians but I think a big majority of fans would welcome and lap up to a lesbian tennis player if she just dolls herself up a little bit
For a gay male tennis player, it would be a disaster That is a reason why even retired American player like JMG are afraid to openly come out

“Abrasive”, r119??!!
GFY.
by Anonymous | reply 120 | January 18, 2020 8:14 PM |
Sorry but no.
I understand not wanting to come out for a less than friendly enviroment, or having to deal with the fans or simply that it puts you on the spotlilght for not the right reasons (with a lot of added pressure), but i have serious doubts that coming out will affect sponsors. Even more, i think if a young and promising player comes out he will receive a lot of sponsorship
by Anonymous | reply 121 | January 18, 2020 8:24 PM |
I can understand why someone wouldn't come out because of the huge focus and pressure it would out them under. I don't believe it would affect them financially in any way, the opposite in fact - companies would be tripping over themselves to sign them up. But that wouldn't be the case everywhere in the world.
If say a Top 10 player were to come out tomorrow they could make a fortune as they're already successful. Someone lower-ranked still with something to prove wouldn't have it as easy.
It's a complex issue. Part of me thinks "why the fuck hasn't JMG come out publicly - he's already practically out on instagram etc" but also accept he's still active in tennis and doesn't "need" the extra attention it would bring. It's easy for us to judge JMG etc but we're really just armchair fans.

Sam Stosur is out of the closet since recently. And yes Ash Barty has a boyfriend but I don’t think it would matter if she didn’t, she has huge endorsement deals now, with Jaguar, Vegemite and a watch company, to name just a few. It’s amusing to see posters on here still underestimating Ash. She doesn’t grunt like a banshee or break racquets so some people think she’s a pushover. Not so.

1573 is a Chinese alcohol brand. They sponsor the tournament so they get a court named after their product. And some people say the US Open is overly commercialized.

Raonic leads Giustino, 6-2 6-1 5-2*;
Sinner leads Purcell, 7-6 6-2 4-4;
Opelka leads Fognini, 6-3 7-6 1-0*;
Garin leads Travaglia, 6-4 6-3 1-1;
Riske leads Wang Yafan, 7-6.

Rain was expected for pretty much all day, so the fact that they have finished 17 of the 50 outside courts matches already isn't too bad.
Normally iI really gets very pissed due to rain during a tennis tournament especially if it is during early rounds because it completely wrecks the schedule and put the lower-ranked players at disadvantage. However, I hope that today there is huge rain for next 4-5 hours.

poor Venus. I'm assuming this is her last year on tour. She's lost some of her power and speed these last 6-7 years and the newer players are getting better and better
Coco was too solid for her. Some nervy moments from both but also plenty of great points.

by Anonymous | reply 192 | January 20, 2020 9:31 AM |
I feel for Dennis Shopbottom. But he needs to monitor his schedule.
After the ATP Cup, he had enough match practice. There was no need to go to Auckland to play an ATP-250 tournament.
He had a great run in the last three months in Bercy, Davis cup and ATP Cup. But he wasted that momentum by playing too much. A total 1 week of rest after the ATP Cup would have allowed him to be at his peak during AO but he behaved like a journeyman/vulture and simply got too greedy for ATP points/appearance fees
These young gun needs to prioritize their result on Grand slams and Grand slams only. The rest of the ATP tournaments should be only the means or ladder for the Grand slams.
Otherwise, big three will continue to win all the Grand slams at least for the next two years

Sissypants looked in great form. He is obviously a bit embarrassed by these Greek hooligan soccer fans lol.
Kvitova also was quite scary in her match.
I'm convinced Dan Evans is doping.
I hope Fogna can come back tomorrow when play resumes but I doubt it. He's too short to be able to do anything against the Opelka serve.
Sloth Stephens actually looks awake for once.
Venus was terrible in her match. I know she's still nursing an injury and had to pull out of BOTH warm up events, but some of her backhand errors were dreadful.
The organisers are cruel for using her name and legend status to hype younger players though. Here is Federer with Craig Tiley probably making sure he gets the cushiest quarter of the draw.

I was just looking at JMG's record. Even though he only won 3 small titles in singles, he was runner-up at a Masters, made a slam QF and beat almost every top player he faced at least 1 time except for a couple guys like Ferrero. JMG seemed like an underachiever. Now he did hit with both hands on both groundstrokes and he's on the taller side so he didn't have great movement but still....
by Anonymous | reply 196 | January 20, 2020 10:18 AM |
R196 JMG is still well-known in tennis fan circles and still active in tennis. Him coming out would be huge news that I suppose he's decided he doesn't need as he has a pretty good life already.

One of the ATP "gold badge" umpires (Gialuca Moscarella) dismissed. During the Florence challenger tournament in October 2019 he harrassed a ball girl during the match between Pedro Sousa and Enrico Dalla Valle. He was caught telling her:
“You are fantastic. Very sexy. Are you ok? It’s hot. Do you feel hot? Physically or emotionally?”
As he was tired to referee the match, at one point, he told Sousa (while the other one was having a toilet break) "“Stay focused. Come on. 2 minutes and it’s over. The match should be 6-1 6-1 and you had 45 break points. Focus please,”

disappointing choke from Sloane. In the first set and a half she actually was playing a pretty good level of tennis. She was mixing in counter punching with good shot making. When she served for the match she got very tentative though and Zhang was able to gain momentum.

Rafa playing in short white shorts...
by Anonymous | reply 245 | January 21, 2020 2:34 AM |
FAA served for the 1st set at 5-4 but donated the break back then lost the set 5-7 by going too many times to the Gulbis backhand. Gulbis' backhand is 1 of the very best on tour while his forehand is very wonky. Not sure what the strategy is there
by Anonymous | reply 246 | January 21, 2020 2:59 AM |
Who told Thiem that dye job was a good idea?
by Anonymous | reply 247 | January 21, 2020 3:38 AM |
FAA takes the 2nd set 6-4. His last 2 service games of the set he had to come back from 0-40

disappointing inconsistency and poor strategy from FAA. Gulbis played a decent level and got more comfortable as he was able to hit a lot of backhands.

Jesus, Tiafoe is just dumb. He’s made dumb shot after dumb shot every chance he has a chance to lead. By the time he learns his choices are doing him in, he will be too old for the game.
by Anonymous | reply 262 | January 21, 2020 8:17 AM |
Frances looks really cute in the pink. It's a good color for him.
Impressed he could win the 2nd set. Medvedev's forehand is letting him down

Classic Tiafoe. Dumb when it counts.

Tiafoe is a dumb player
by Anonymous | reply 266 | January 21, 2020 11:47 AM |
Tiawful really squandered so many chances and leads today.
Having said that I expected him to do a lot worse considering his form the last 11 months. A good showing for him that he can work on. And it was nice to see that booty again.
Does anybody feel like most of the courts are playing slow? Or at least like the ball is 'sticking' a lot to the surface?
by Anonymous | reply 267 | January 21, 2020 12:59 PM |
R267, the surface is said to be grittier and slower than last year’s.
by Anonymous | reply 269 | January 21, 2020 1:36 PM |
r266/r267—I don't remember where I read or heard it, but this year's AO is actually faster than the USO *and* Wimbledon.
by Anonymous | reply 270 | January 21, 2020 2:13 PM |
I read that too R270 but it was probably on DL
by Anonymous | reply 271 | January 21, 2020 2:17 PM |
Interesting. Wimbledon last year was like a mud court though. It felt like a repeat of Roland Garros, the grass was long and slippery and even big serves weren't moving through it with that much speed.
At the AO this year it might be more that it's sticking and gritty rather than actually slow (due to the minerals put in it - meaning it could change by the end of the fortnight with a bit of wear).
Because the few players i've seen to hit THROUGH it are the hard flat bashers (Kvitova, Kyrgios, Maddy Keys, Basilashvili, Yastremska, Bublik). Players who hit with more topspin look like their ball is going extremely slow after it bounces - this applies to most of the ATP, but even bigger hitters like say Serena or Federer look as though they're hitting at half pace.

Vasek Popsil lost to 41 year old Ivo Karlovic
So Dennis, FAA and now Vasek all out . Only botonic is there and he is not exactly Candida
by Anonymous | reply 273 | January 21, 2020 3:26 PM |
Andreescu has been on the pro tour for about one year, plays half a schedule or less, and has a body made of glass, and even then her worst results are better than the rest of Canada's best results.
They would be wise to focus on marketing her instead of the likes of Genie/Shapo/FAA who will never be reliable to perform up to their potential...

Coco Gauff now playing on Melbourne Arena, the third-tier stadium.
Big barn. But amazingly, it's the worst main draw singles court assignment Gauff has gotten at a Slam in her *career*.

Court 1
US Open:

by Anonymous | reply 299 | January 22, 2020 1:53 AM |
Yes, but it has nothing do with her court Schedule
by Anonymous | reply 300 | January 22, 2020 2:02 AM |
Gauff seems like a really nice kid, but the relentless media fawning makes me want her to lose. Kenin is seeded 14 and you barely hear anything about her.
by Anonymous | reply 301 | January 22, 2020 2:08 AM |
Don't let media hype hate(I know you don't exactly hate her) a nice kid. It not her fault .Media is using her for their own benefit . They don't care about her . if she crashes and burn tomorrow . they will forget her immediately and will move on to next thing. That is how they roll . Always need a "star" to sell their shitty overpriced product .
Best way to deal with these things is to not sway positively or negatively by the media
by Anonymous | reply 302 | January 22, 2020 2:15 AM |
Good point. But I do hate that she's started with the obnoxious "Come on!!" after every point she wins. I don't recall her doing that last year.

Sad to see Berrettini out. At least Sandgren and Querrey face off in the 3rd round so that we'll be rid of one of them.
Does anyone else think Querrey looks like Buttigieg's unfortunate younger brother?

by Anonymous | reply 307 | January 22, 2020 11:40 AM |
CoCo G doesn't even compare to 15 year old Andrea Jaeger's 1980 season. Jaegs beat all the greats except Evert that year, made the Wimbledon quarters and US Open semis. Gauff is not likely to EVER be a top ten player. Her game is basic. Her annoying parents will end up being HATED and it will affect her.
