Midsommar - anyone seen this

Feeling depressed after obsessively reading the life isn’t worth living thread.

Watched this after reading all the warnings that it can’t be unseen.

Who has seen this, and what say you?

by Anonymousreply 23April 26, 2020 6:41 PM

I watched it on AMAZON. It was sort of a break-up revenge fantasy.

It reminded me of an old scary film I watched on cable once or twice called THE WICKER MAN.

Very disturbing, but I was surprised at myself by getting slightly aroused towards the end of the film, when the guy's body is exploited and he's used as a sexual reproductive object.

I adore it. Actually helped me with my depression because of that last scene where she experiences her release. Very cathartic. And gorgeous to look at.

I was digging the opening half and then I quickly realized it was just a mashup of The Wicker Man and Harvest Home. Then it became a breakup revenge movie and I started loving it. When that gorgeous Jack Reynor took it all off, I loved it even more.

Too long for its own good. Aster needs to learn how to craft a more compact narrative since nothing he does here is all that deep.

Loved it. Best movie of the year for me. And the music is great.

The Wicker Man > Midsommar

by Anonymousreply 6February 2, 2020 7:17 PM

The obnoxious characters and their sequential disappearances... it’s basically Willy Wonka and the Wicker Man.

Maybe R7 is on to something.

by Anonymousreply 8February 3, 2020 11:47 AM

Watched it. Don't really need to see it again.

Way over hyped, boring, and believe it or not, there is actually a 3 hour cut of it as well. There are some people on r/horror who will lose their collective shit and come after you if you say anything remotely critical about either of Ari's films. I couldn't stand "Dani" throughout the whole movie, she's just a whinny bratty bitch that can't handle a breakup.

by Anonymousreply 10February 3, 2020 12:08 PM

It was okay. The opening with her sister's murder/suicide was the best part but nothing else in the film really stands up to that with all the dread and suspense. And it is way too long. I hear there is a director's cut (which was never released in the USA) and I always wonder why considering it is already at least 30-45 minutes longer than it needs to be. Everyone compares it to The Wicker Man, but another horror film I found it similar to is Two Thousand Maniacs.

But overall, it is alright. But Hereditary is much better.

Watched this on Amazon Prime last night. What a piece of trash. Boring as hell for must of its overly long run time, graphically and grotesquely violent in parts, unintentionally laughable in others, and not a bit scary.

The only thing that made it worth watching were the few gratuitous shots of peen, but to get to those, you had to endure full frontal shots of ancient women and their sagging tits and bloated bellies.

I should have expected this movie would be a pile of shit, being as Ari Aster directed it. He was responsible for that other hot mess, "Hereditary."

I did not know that I hadn’t seen the complete Wicker Man until recently. I saw it as a teen on TV in the mid 70s. I didn’t know the tv version of the movie had been brutally censored. The song about the landlord’s daughter had all the sexuality taken out of it, so it seemed like a bunch of old guys singing to Britt Ekland. I was like “WTF? Why are they wasting my time with this?”

The scenes of the naked girls jumping over the fire were cut out. The Maypole scene did not show boys thrusting their hips...just a brief glimpse of a man singing and boys wrapped in ribbon. The scene with the schoolteacher talking to the girls made no mention of phallic symbol or the penis. The cake scene - gone. I thought the movie was a terrible mishmash about a stupid, repressed old policeman who hated young, pretty girls because they wore hippie type clothes & flowers in their hair.

That said, I cannot believe what a ripoff Midsommar is of the original Wicker Man. And too long, much less creepy. The Swedish villagers in their white smocks were nothing compared to the Wicker Man villagers in their animal heads and playing fucked up tricks on Woodward’s cop. Plus the kids being tutored about sex as part of village life is scarily pedo today. I think it was brilliant if the Wicker Man to switch the sexes in the maypole scene. I remember in catholic school in the 1960s, nuns would have the girls make a circle around the statue of the Virgin Mary and sing about her purity and holiness. Seemed totally normal to us & I had no idea it was an adaptation of ancient phallic maypole rituals.

I watched this and Hereditary on my phone and they still both really unsettled me. I cannot imagine being in the theatre watching this.

Ugh, the ending with the tent.

R7, Lol

by Anonymousreply 17April 25, 2020 2:42 AM

I think R7 pretty much summarized MIDSOMMAR in one sentence.

by Anonymousreply 18April 26, 2020 4:48 PM

I’m confused if this is a movie or TV show, I keep seeing it referred to as both?

by Anonymousreply 19April 26, 2020 4:51 PM

Watching this will not make you feel less depressed

by Anonymousreply 20April 26, 2020 4:58 PM

It was meh. The lack of hot muscular nude gay men really did hamper my enjoyment of this film.

by Anonymousreply 21April 26, 2020 5:37 PM

Loved it!

by Anonymousreply 22April 26, 2020 6:35 PM

Folk Horror is the best.
